I would suggest that the first thing to do is by hearing protectors. Wink

Haha, well we have the replacement fans ready to install. And these will be in a server room kept nice and chilly.

We will be selling off some of our B7 / B8 S3+ units to free up some PSUs.

Perfect condition, housed in Server Room at 64 F (approx) Hepa Air Handler. Clean and Like New.

I apologize if this is off topic but if there is any interest just shoot me a PM.

Strato

That reminds me, when I changed the fans on my S5's, I noticed these were "tested" in some very dirty conditions, the fans and heat sinks were covered in soot.

which replacement fans did you choose to use? I would appreciate a link if you have it. Thanks.

I bought the Delta AFB1212SHE units in bulk. Also have the Noctura Fans but will test and send back if the Deltas cut it.

It is for the S5 and a EVGA 1300 G2 though.. Yes, hearing protection is advised.

Im planning on running 2 per 1300 EVGA using the wiring diagram Philip posted in his review thread. Will there be any issues running 2 per 1300?

I also have a handful of 1000w and 850w PSUs

Do you think the Corsair 1200xi Platinum could power two of these?  Expensive PSU, but I have 6 of them.

Strato

I've got an ax1500i running my two, don't know about the 1200 though, it might but you'd be at its limit if so, the 1300 should be OK, but your nearing max. with 2 S5's, test by keeping watch for a couple days.  You can always down clock them a little like I did if the 1200 can't handle it.  I downed mine to 312.5M due to heat.  The 1000 P2 is a great one for a C1 or 2 S3+'s.

Thats pretty crazy. Ive seen S3+ units for sale on ebay that are literally filled with dust.

Our server room is sealed, double door, positive pressure, Hepa Filtered, and chilly. Our servers and miners literally look new even after months. Its not a "pharma" grade dustless environment, but its pretty damn clean.

I got mine new yesterday and that's how they were new.  Might keep that in mind when your filters start getting dirty fast in there.

@Ilan123, I put 2 delta fans on and it is rather quite now, running at 54-56c with an RPM at 2880 for both fans when I last looked. I don't have the P/N with me right now though. My SP20's are about 70db and the S5 about 60db with the new fans. It was louder than my other units before the change but I did not take a reading. Others have the stock db level from the S5 units here though. I will get particulars later like ambient room temp and the P/N for the fans later today.
Fan: Delta AFC1212DE, 12vdc, 1.6A, 3900 RPM, 192.96CFM, 51 dBA, 120mm x120mm x 38mm or equivalent. These came out of some old Dell desktops, Dell P/N: Y4574. Right now room temp 26.1C, blades at 57-55 with the fans at 3K and 3120.

Re deltas-it wasn't that deal phil was talking about? because if it was, these fans (I bought a lot of 5) have some weird connector which does not seem to readily fit the 4 male pins on the miner.
Did you try these fans already?

You might be better off running 3 S5's off 2 of those 1200w PSU's so not to over max them and gives you a chance to set the freq higher than the default.

I am curious though. If these are in a server room, why tinker with the fans at all? Is there a noise concern in the room? I thought the issue with the S5 fan was strictly noise related.

Mine came and the connectors are funky shape connectors annoying as shit.

I will have to splice them to some other pwm plugs.

I will use this to splice

The server room does have a high noise floor to begin with. But I was concerned these might be over the top db wise.

If you look at page 3 of the S5 manual you will see as long as you dont mix PSU's on the same board you can use more than one PSU to power a miner. So you will power  miner #1 with 4 plugs from the first PSU and also plug into both plugs on one side of same board of miner#2. Then use the second PSU to power the other side of miner #2 and to power all 4 plugs on Miner #3. This will give you room to run the miner at a higher freq as at freq 375 my miner draws @635 watts at the wall and get @1220GH.

The Delta fans I used both had 5-pin connectors with only 4 sockets used. They worked fine on the S1 units, only had to re-pin to match the standard pinout, I did this with a scribe, and remove the two raised barbs on the back of the connectors that were there to match the proprietary Dell computer connector. Those came off very easy with a blade. To put them on the S5, because of the location of the connectors, I had to shave the empty socket off of one of the connectors. I did this with a sharp box cutter but I am sure a xacto blade would work just as well. You can see the 5-pin connector as it hangs over the chassis connector.

Also from what I have noticed with servers is that noise affects the performance of reading from and writing to the mechanical hard drives (SSD's are obviously unaffected by noise vibration as they have no moving parts). The noisier the environment, the slower they get.

BTW, is anyone able to compare the noise to an S4 please? I have an S4 and had to find another location for it. I had my neighbour knocking on my door asking what the hell the noise was and saying that he could not sleep with it (we both are in separate houses and his bedroom is about 50 meters away from my house). I have seen reports of the S4 between 70 and 90 db but not sure how accurate they were. It would be great if someone could do a test using the same metering device at the same distances for testing both.

Almost identical to the S4.

How to upgrade firmware on s5? Which file should be uploaded to s5? Must you have a memory card to upgrade? Would be grateful if someone could explain.  Smiley

Are their any recovery SD images like the ones SP provides that would allow you to recover your BBB in the event you can't communicate with it or it gets damaged and you need to replace it?

I don't believe so, later S5s won't even have an SD card slot.

Also, if anyone has coupons for sale, please pm me your offer... Thanks.

The coupon transfer functionality on the website seems to be broken so I don't think anyone can buy or sell coupons right now.
sad day.

Its being fixed.

Could someone please update me on the safest over clocking potential?
If you have a cold air source, or can handle a lot of noise, 412.5MHz seems to be about the limit before hashrate starts nose-diving. Board temperature around 65C doesn't seem to be the problem. Peaks out around 1.32-1.35TH, and at 425MHz is down to 1.25TH

Just remember no overclocking is 'safe', especially as you lose your safety net of the warranty.

I moved mine to get a little more cold air. The fan slowed enough that the high pitch whine went away, but it was still moving an incredible amount of air considering the ambient.

By all means correct me if I'm wrong, but I could have sworn B7 was the last of the S3 batches, B8 being the first of the S3+ batches.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By the way, does anyone happen to know what the correct grill size is for the S3/+ fan?
