I suspect there are several very big miners who have been backed by serious money who have built and operate their own chips and tell no-one.

These entities have a name for it. It is called 國營企業.

State-owned enterprises?

Who else will have that kind of resource?

Put your tinfoil hat on, I never understood why ASICMINER never said anything official about Gen 2, and then we find out it was canceled because it was "unsatisfactory".

G.ASICMINER (Bitfunder)
The offer to convert G.ASICMINER shares is now over. If you still hold any, you will need to wait for Bitfunder to convert them to Direct Shares with Friedcat to do anything with them.
Hi,ThickAsThieves.
I still have some shares in bf.For some reasons I dont know,I just can log into bf.
Will the shares be converted to direct shares automatically? And when will they be converted?
Looking forward to your reply,thanks!

Just wonder what's the cost of this new cooling technology. Is it just worth it to build a showcase container, or it is profitable already to build one or two more container like this. If latter (in the report, caoxg said there're some empty space there), then I think maybe it's safe to order another batch of gen1 chips.

Another batch (maybe 1TH) could be available by the end of December or early January, and then try to sell them as many as possible. If unfortunately the sales is bad, then put all the rest into the new containers built that time. With the low production cost, the ROI will be reached before the gen3 chips are ready and they can be easily thrown away to accommodate the new chips.

Smiling is for tourists. Wink

The operation looks very clean and organized - there's a lot to be said for data center operations with well designed cable runs, cooling systems, etc. They tend to run a lot more reliably than the spaghetti mess.

We're at 800 pages, btw.

If you don't know this thread, bookmark it:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=220837

Franktank is doing a great job centralizing official information and summarizing the news every quarters.

I'd advise any new investor in AM to read up every posts from friedcat since at least September, it's the only way to distinguish real info from reasonable speculation/crazy speculation/totally wrong stuff.

Yes, thanks, I know that thread. Great job by Franktank. And still I'm looking for the missing piece between:

Hardware Update
• Already shipped devices(Gen1, already shipped) were limited by quantity of the power chip supply we pre-ordered before two months.
• We made an order of another brand of power chips which are about two weeks late. In October this will provide another 500TH/s (Gen1).
• If any deal of ordering Gen1 chips from outside buyers via us is reached, additional orders will be made.
• The size of the Gen2 order will be decided as appropriate, according to the network difficulty when it is time to finalize the order size.

8. Financial Report
The next official ASICMINER Financial Report is scheduled to be released on October 20s. We had been in the process of accumulating reserves for a two-year-based small lab (all salaries) and a full mask cost for 40nm for one month. Additional income may be reserved for other chip advancements.

Next Gen Chips
The projected time of taping out of Gen3 is January 20. Power consumption target estimation is <0.2W per G on low power mode and <0.2$ per G on wafer cost. Please notice that the timeline is of course subject to change/adjust, and the estimation on power and cost is also based on software tool/simulation results.

Gen 2 was mentioned on Sep 24, it's unclear which generation the 40 nm belongs to and on Nov 22 gen 3 was announced. I don't see anything that explicitly says that there is no gen 2.

Does this count?:

so Gen2 is skipped?
I'd also be very interested to hear the answer to this.

It's frustrating seeing responses which indicate that all the questions in this thread are being read, yet ignored.

Yes, it was skipped. FC mentioned this in the past. Apparently the performance wasn't as good as they hoped and they just decided to move on... probably a good move.
According to friedcat Gen2 is not worthwhile for 2 reasons:
1) Gen2 would come out relatively late due to some factors outside of AM's control
2) Gen3 shows promising results and the roll-out seems to be better/more reliably organized

Thus funds are better to be spent on Gen3 hardware. The production schedule will depend on a risk/reward ratio determined by friedcat. Deviations from the schedule need to be anticipated when rolling out a new product technology, so hedge accordingly when speculating on AM.

Doesn't clear up any confusion. We don't know if gen2 or gen3 is 40nm.

They are skipping gen2 according to Jutarul though.  Seems like we'll have to wait until jan20+ for any sort of new chips.  Can any other board members confirm this?
