1. while this wafer making process is going, you can't cancel it, or make adjustments, and if you wish to change anything, you will have to re-run this whole work flow all over again ( the large amount of the NRE upwards of 6 digits in USD is paid when you make the MASK). so anytime, BFL mention they are waiting for chips to come e.g. next week, but if they are still making adjustments, then this is physically impossible. In addition, fabrication company don't do chip packaging, if they are expecting the chips to arrive next week that means the production is already finished and they are probably in the chip packaging company (it is usually this time you find out if your chips work or not. which can also take some time since you'll have to test each of the chips for defects.)

Josh already stated that it takes 2-5 days from design to product-in-hand. They must have someone local doing it for them. Stamping sheet metal isn't a difficult or lengthy process.
No complicated process, no. But problems don't summarize - they multiply. Hence we won't see BFL ASIC shipment in 2012. [EDIT] Seems I missed some fun time here on the forums last night (Josh getting (even more) megalomaniac and running amok). Which makes me think: Do you guys at BFL actually work at some time? Or are you just trolling the forums? I mean with all the pre-order money you could do nothing but trolling till the year 2042 - and still pay yourselves a decent salary |

At least not yet At the moment they have problems with the chip itself (they also admitted this. finally, after tons of bullshit excuses). Hence the need for a rev2 (or even 3, or 4 ... who knows). Problems with assembly can still come after that ... |

There are usually working samples made before final fabrication to make sure you are getting what you want. I would imagine that they should have at least 1 working prototype right now ...

A new case rev takes us between 2 and 5 days to go from design document to product in hand. It's not really an issue.
So I assume on the day the little Chinese leprechauns bring you your ASICs all the other problems, redesigns, difficulties in delivery, etc. are solved mysteriously and the "magic" (aka everything is working together nicely) happens. Somehow. And one day later your have a working product that you can ship. Yes? |

I've had to deal with fabrication before, and I can tell you that several of my designs wound up changing at the 11th hour before production.
For BFL it just seems that almost all parts are changed at the 11th hour. Their ASICs even in the 13th hour. Which lets the chance of getting a working product approach zero. |

Hello BFL, I can sort of understand that you wait for your ASICs (because your Asian fab screwed you over, or whatever). But what I don't understand is all the other delays. E.g.
