1201  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: MSI Afterburner "Unofficial Overclocking" GUIDE on: July 08, 2011, 09:41:47 AM
Ryn,the clocks don't show up like 000,so it's not the driver at fault.Either a reinstall of AB or install the beta may help.

You'd think for a overclocking program for enthusiast and occasional overclockers that AB would work 100% because you are dealing with changing voltages and clock speeds so it ought to be more reliable really.

At least ATIWinflash worked perfect 1st time in unlocking my shaders on my card (i didn't do a full conversion into HD 6970 due to energy use and risk concerns)

I'm having an issue with GUIMiner  v2011-07-01

When I ran it yesterday it was fine.Just now when I tried opening that same version,It loads but doesn't display correctly.
Here's an example of what I mean;
1.It loads into the sys tray and my taskbar (superbar in win 7) nut no matter how many times I click it to display normally,it simply refuses to display at all on my screen like normal programs.I have performance boosts on my GPU however I'll be forced to lose performance to get things working again.

Setup;
win 7 x64
Radeon HD 6950

I've had to fall back to v2011-06-14 just to get mining working again at a significant performance loss by at least 30MHash/s (annoying as I had poor productivity over this)

I ran the offending program as admin (still nothing),then use compatibility mode with XP and Vista settings (still no luck).

Please either help me get it to run on win 7 x64 or write a 'hotfix version' of the app so that I can get up and running again soon.Thank you.

cracking passwords  Roll Eyes

Is there a version of those tools for ATI/AMD cards? It's just nice to test it out on locked ZIps,Rars I forgot passwords to from years ago to rescue my work files.

And please don't debate with me the rights and wrongs of using such tools as I'm aware of the implications if they are misused and possible legal issues. When used responsibly, they can be beneficial for you such as recovering lost passwords for your archives. Also this isn't the right thread for debating such issues (for those of you who were thinking of doing so)

I'm also familiar with Black/White hat type hackers as well.(Blackhats do this for financial gain no matter what means they use and whitehats report security loopholes to security companies that develop anti-hacking,firewall tools,e.t.c.As this is my understanding of them)

Also gaming, professional filmmaking (as my work tools require GPGPU acceleration so  a Radeon Hd 6950 would do very well there especially now that my shaders are unlocked as well as OC'd to the max as MSI AF doesn't work for me.)
1204  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: fakeminer - All the thrills of mining, none of the drawbacks on: July 07, 2011, 07:07:57 PM
Why don't you just mine -testnet. You can bust a laptop CPU out on that thing and get 2700x as much in testBTC as you would in crappy regular namecoins.

Shhh, silence!

Testcoins are the new bitcoins, but don't tell anyone until I have hoarded enough of them.

How do you mine these test coins? how to mine with GUIMiner?

So this is the new thing after Bitcoin, namecoin and now test coin?wow looks like bitcoin based currencies are gaining steam now.Since mining namecoins is too complex for due due to registering a domain, but when I do it,it never works for me.I hope test coins can be mined easily atm as in no complex crap in the setup for the mining.

I want in on this, set me up asap for testcoin mining on PC and Mac,thank you.

After typing in those commands in the config file of MSI afterburner.I still don't have the options to overclock my GPU beyond limits.

I'll upload a copy of my cfg file and see if u guys can show me what wrong in there?

or if possible,(since I'm an inexperienced user of MSi afterburner),attach the amended cfg file from some1 who's more experienced with this tool.

Looks Like I can't attach files here,I'll have to display all that text in this post.Oh well, here it is:

1206  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Optimizing ATI performance, 6950 in particular on: July 07, 2011, 10:18:04 AM
I have successfully unlocked shaders on my GPU with ATIWinflash.

Now I get 361MHash/s with the following settings:
1.Shaders unlocked
2.Overclocked to 840MHz (core clock) and 1260MHz (mem clock) currently
3.Use paramenters in GUIminer:-v -w128 -f2
I think

I used to only get 332MHash/s with same overclocking and parameters but without unlocked shaders. My GPU is a Sapphire Radeon HD6950.It is a reference card.

Word of advice:When using ATIWinflash, win 7 may temporarily freeze for less than a second or 2 but the system is quickly responsive after this,it then said that flashing was successfull then it asks me to restart computer for chances to take affect.

How to get above 400MHash/s on that card?
What parameters in GUIminer?
what clock speeds?
or anything else (like switch off Aero in win 7 to reduce GPU overhead maybe)?

Thank you

I really hope that BTc doesn't become worthless as I spent about a month mining on my 2 computers before and after the upgrade of the GPU on my main PC

If they do become worthless at least the card can still work for professional filmmaking as well as my laptop (MBP) which is mainly for pro filmmaking as well. The PC gets involved if the jobs too big for the MBP.
1208  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Value of bitcoin dropping on: July 05, 2011, 07:37:16 PM
can someone who is more experienced with btc tell me what they think is going to happen with btc?can it recover after a dip like this? or will things only go downhill from here based on what they know?

What about the difficulty?as that affects mining. Can the difficulty drop as well as rise? or can it only get harder to mine?

Back in April, 2011, one could purchase a bitcoin for $1 or less.  Since then we have experienced a brief but sharp bubble that is in the process of deflating. It has been argued in another thread that the bubble should be deflated by the end of August and that prices should drop to the pre-bubble level.

I am a bitcoin miner, and I expect difficulty to slowly rise and either level off or decline as unprofitable miners stop mining.  As the overall network hash rate declines, remaining individual miners will earn more bitcoins for a given amount of mining activity.  In the scenario I expect, these future revenues will be lower than what miners are earning now.

The design of the bitcoin protocol is such that competitive miners should push the network hash rate to the level where the marginal miner pays their electric and air conditioning bills, depreciates their mining rigs, and make a small profit to justify the venture.  I think that the days of paying off a new mining rig in a month or two with earned bitcoins are gone.

Thanx a lot slipperyslope for the in depth info on why things are the way they are.So it looks like that I can either mine more bitoins when the unprofitable miners stop mining but I can expect less income from each btc.It makes me think whether it's really worth doing even with the general boost in mining capability then because that'll keep me thinking in the mid term (up to 6 months at least)

Well I think I'll bite the bullet and keep mining then knowing that my mining abilities will be boosted simply because of the unprofitable miners going off mining, although it wouldn't hurt for me to learn how to mod my Radeon Hd 6950 card by at least unlocking the shaders so I can get even more btc than at the moment. I wonder if the remaining miners will resort to coin hoarding and wait until things get profitable to sell and the whole cycle will repeat itself or the best of the BTC years are truly behind us for good and another currency may take it's place until the same cycle happens again ans so forth.

1210  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Value of bitcoin dropping on: July 05, 2011, 05:42:03 PM
The value of the BTC w.r.t. major currencies is completely determined by market mechanisms. If many people want to buy bitcoins, the value rises, if many people want to get rid of them, the drops. So, the value is not determined by any 'design'. Instead, it is mostly determined by people's interests.

If the value of the bitcoin continues to decrease, less people will be interested in mining. As a result, the total mining capacity in the network will descrease, and the difficulty will decrease as well. Because of this, mining will automatically become cheaper. The opposite is also true: with increasing bitcoin value, the mining costs will also increase. As a result, mining will always remain a little bit profitable if you know how to do it efficiently.

Other miners are your competitors, and if they do it smarter than you, then you probably won't be able to make it profitable for yourself.

(I'm a newbie. Please correct the above if I'm wrong.)

Wow,that was a very good explanation cjp.At least i know why bitcoins lose and gain value as well.
as my way of saying thanx,I'd like to give you a link to my blog :

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right section (if not then please move it to the proper section) but have you guys noticed how btc is losing it's value in the past week or so.is this normal? Is this by design in btc or something else that's going on?

Because the other day I was set to make £10 from 1BTC mined (about $16.09) I think and then it suddenly dropped,at least that's what I saw on bitcoins.lc frontpage where it tells me the value.

is this site wrong on it's information? If you know of a more reputable and easy to understand source of information on this can you please tell me? As I'm quite worried that I'm mining at the moment, the difficulty is getting harder yet the value doesn't seem to reflect this.Maybe if some miners quit the difficulty will drop, but that only drops the difficulty though, not raise it's value (unless I'm wrong on that one)I think.

can someone who is more experienced with btc tell me what they think is going to happen with btc?can it recover after a dip like this? or will things only go downhill from here based on what they know?

I've flashed all of my 5830's from within windows.

Only issue that I've had is that on one of my miners, atiwinflash crashed after I flashed one of my cards.  The cards were successfully flashed but if I try running atiwinflash on that particular miner, I get a BSOD.  It's weird.. no idea why it does that.

Thanx 4 sharing your experience with this tool.Yikes I don't like the sound of that BSOD.It may need to be run as admin, because Once I just ran it and it BSOD my system, then when I re run it with admin rights,it worked for me and I didn't even flash my card yet, just checking out the utility as it's new to me.

At least the cards didn't get bricked tho :-)

my win 7 install isn't in good shape though so crashes are more likely.I was planning to buy an SSD that I can reinstall win 7 onto (to help boost performance, reduce power consumption, reduce heat and noise as well)

I hear that the Kingston V+100 ssds are good for mid range use.
1213  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Save Money! Underclock and disable stuff! on: July 05, 2011, 01:32:05 PM
  • disable everything u don't need (serial ports, parallel ports, onboard audio, secondary onboard LAN
  • use a single DDR bank
  • switch to 2,5 hdds (ssds are too expensive imho)
  • get a hi-efficiency PSU

OK.my motherboard is an Asus P6T-SE.There are no serial or paralell ports, there only one onboard NIC which I need for mining and film making work plus internet,I can't use a single DDR3 bank as that memory only works in triple channel on my mobo.Upgrading PSU is simply out of the question for me,
It'd be cheaper for me to store all data on 1 2TB eco HDD (and remove 3 old HDDs in the process) in addition to getting a kingston V+ 100 SSD (at 64GB or 96GB since it's only £10 difference for me from amazon.co.uk) plus I'd have lightning fast productivity as well than it would be for me to buy a more efficient PSU (Quality PSU for my needs would cost at least £170 due to the higher efficiency for 800W+,where as replacing my 3 HDDs with 1 2TB HDD plus add an SSD would only cost me ~£140)

onboard sound is necessary due to my work as a filmmaker when it's not mining, the gd GPU (radeon HD 6950 would still be a great asset for my work)

If you have any suggestions or know of something I may have overlooked on my mobo, then please share some tips that can help me:
1.meet environmental targets (mainly by reducing power consumption)
2.boost my mining performance on my GPU (by unlocking my shaders and OC'ing.Help is needed on this:http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=26187.new;topicseen#new as well please)
3.Boost general productivity of my PC.

Thank you Smiley

EDIT:How does underclocking mem clock on GPU boost performance?because I see the best mining setups having high core clocks and low mem clocks
1214  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Save Money! Underclock and disable stuff! on: July 05, 2011, 01:04:08 PM
Are we talking about CPU,RAM,onboard I/O stuff,e.t.c?

I've done the following to save power on my PC:
1.underlock my core i7 CPU to 1.35ghz (from 2.67ghz stock).Saved me Approz 25 Watts
2.Enabled 'Green ethernet' on my NIC as that saved me 10 watts (CAT5 cable length is 20 meters so big saving is made by not running current through it all the time)
3.Disabled firewire 400 as I never use it.saved 5 watts
4.removed one of my 3 HDDs.saved 8 Watts
5.changed fans from 80mm to 120mm as this improved the cooling and reduce power use at the same time. saved 8 watts doing this.

This is so far tho

I plan on making more low cost changes

Like switch to SSD and have a 2TB green HDD (which'll let me remove the final 2 HDDS saving me another 20 Watts)

The RAM was suto underclocked when my CPU was underclocked as well.

so far in total I managed to save 56 watts from just the PC (base unit)

I wonder what else can be disabled on a mobo to save energy?
1215  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Record hashrate for a 5850? (me, showing off) on: July 05, 2011, 12:56:18 PM
Hey guys, I've had a few people say that my 400 MH/s hash rate must be a fairy tale, I wanted to post a pic eventually, but now seemed like a good time to post a pic of 1000 MHz core with a private beta phatk kernel , my highest hashrate yet!

I'm too scared to go over this voltage, I don't want to push it too far

What is the current record for a 5850? (or at least, one on air/reference cooler)

What's that utility you have there that lets you adjust clock speeds and mem speeds? (program that says sapphire in the screengrab) As I could really use the help for my HD 6950 card

If I can't unlock shaders, what would the optimal settings be for my card for mining?

Thank you
1216  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Query about ATIWinflash tool on: July 05, 2011, 12:23:49 PM
Hi guys,
I'm a bit uncertain as to which method is the best (and most guaranteed to work) for flashing my Radeon HD6950 GPU with just unlocked shaders only mod (I'm not converting to a Radeon HD6970 mod because the risks are too high for my situation at the moment and high power use is an issue for me due to the 19% electricity price hikes in my area in the coming months)

I've got ATIWinflash tool at the moment as I'm not sure how to make a bootable USb stick for the DOS flashing of my GPU.

Would simply unlocking shaders with some form of overclock reduce the stability or lifetime of my card on it's own or would poor cooling be more likely to be the culprit? As I've recently upgraded my case cooling to  high power Schythe (I don't know how to pronounce that) fans (120mm of course as that's what my case can handle) that are doing a very good job of cooling my system even at moderate speeds and reasonably quiet.

Which flashing method is:
a.most likely to work
b.most effective from users who have tested these methods

Separate question,I've noticed BTC falling in value lately. What causes currency value to fall as well as rise?Do you think Bitcoin is going to keep on losing value or is this just a temporary thing that's normal on all currencies (real or internet based) and can go up again? Thank you
1217  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Optimizing ATI performance, 6950 in particular on: July 03, 2011, 07:36:06 PM
i've just got two sapphire hd6950's the (dirt 3 editions) and to my surprise they have the bios switch ! so i was getting "cannot erase the bio" to flicked the switch and bam i can flash it .............BUT
no matter that bio i flash it doesnt unlock the shaders or the card simply wont boot  Cry

ive used atiwinflash in CMD with admin right and in the windows prog..... i have also saved my current bios and used the shader bios mod on it and flashed it back.......still not unlocked !

i dont know what else to try Huh??

any ideas ?!

cheers onis

It sounds like your card may not be unlockable via BIOS updates or modified BIOS files.AMD have been trying to stop people unlocking the HD 6950 cards so that they'd have to shell out on a HD6950 card.I know it sux. Or maybe there's another method of unlocking that doesn't involve BIOS flashes.even then I think that if a card doesn't unlock via the BIOS method then it's quite unlikely that it's unlockable (there are exceptions to this of course but I don't know this for sure)

My card also has Dual BIOS switch. It's there so that if u brick ur card,u can go into like a safe mode where you can still boot to reflash the stock BIOS again.

If your cards not a reference board type, then it probably won't work anyway. The way to tell if it's reference is to look for the AMD logo near the PCI-E connector (gold edge that goes into  the motherboard)

Mine is a Sapphire (and yes it does have that black shroud with a picture over it's heat sink),the fan is positioned to hte back of the board (another way to tell that's its a reference board from what I'm hearing around the net) .

I hope this anwers your question.

P.S.Is it a reference board? (you can check by using the tips in my post)
1218  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Optimizing ATI performance, 6950 in particular on: July 03, 2011, 05:26:43 PM
Just installed my HIS 6950.

Using latest poclbm w/ gui front end

passing nothing - 230 Mhash
passing -v - 270 Mhash
No difference between w64 or w128

using -v -w128 -f2 = 281Mhash (only feasible when away at work)
using -v -w128 -f30 = 273 Mhash

Haven't messed with unlocking shaders just yet - maybe tomorrow  Grin

I'd like 2 say thanx 4 the mining parameters as they have boosted my GPU mining quite a bit from 308MHash/s to ~330MHash/s (peak it hit 381MHash/s but that's just lucky I think) on just the same OC settings;
core clock 840MHZ (max catalyst will safely go)
mem clock 1260MHZ
Power control is +20%
fan is 55% (should be 62% for my GPU as temps get high)

Thank you JWU42 Smiley
1219  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Optimizing ATI performance, 6950 in particular on: July 03, 2011, 03:41:37 PM
technically you can flash in windows, but dont, there's just way more chance of it not working or you locking up / bricking your card. its happened regularly to someone i know. but the dos way is trouble free

repeat, if you arent willing to do it in dos dont do it
technically it prob will void your warranty, but whether it eventually stops you getting a replacement or money back is in the hands of the gods

did you work out if its a non-reference board or not ?

Looking around the DOS solution doesn't seem as difficult as it seems.I managed to make a copy of my stock BIOS in addition to a modified copy with just the shaders unlocked (but not mod it into HD6970 as I don't wanna risk my card.unlocking shaders is a low risk job)

can someone with experience on this please tell me in a clear step to step guide guide on what utilities to get, what settings to use,how to prepare USB stick for DOS flashing? As this would help me a lot as I'm struggling to get more than 310MHash/s with just OC'ing to the official max (840MHZ core clock, mem clock 1255MHZ-as this works better on my system).

How much of a boost can unlocking hte shaders give me with the current OC'ing level?

cus I've read that I can get up to 430MHash/s on that card.If I was to move back to mining solo (as my current pool doesn't seem to work the way I expect it to do nymore),how long would my card do if it was unlocked to get my 1st 50BTC (as I really need to payoff my upgrades within a few months)?

Thank you

What flags can I use in GUIminer that can :
a.boost my performance (as I only get 290MHash/s stock speeds as Im afraid of burning out my card by OC'ing,or flashing HD6970 BIO which I don't wanna do)
sorry but there aint much gain to be had with just miner parameters, your pretty safe oc'ing just your core mhz to something stable. voltage and heat are the real killers so watch out for them. under 90c is ok but around 70 is better.

Quote
b.Allow me to use other apps without freezing my PC

-f60 for example will affect miner priority and will help with sluggishness , but lockups while using other programs that access the gpu wont be stopped by this. that is a bug that is being fixed in next ati release apparently. though you can try a different miner in the mean time.

Is this the catalyst driver that's got this bug or is it hardware?

this is  a paradox, as lower temperatures = more noise , and vise versa. you can try finding a happy medium by manually fixing the fan speed to meet your likes, or trying to increase case airflow.

has it got all the crazy black plastic shroud ? does it have dual bios switch ?with fan in half way along board ? or is it like most stock cards with fan at rear of board ?
stock reference = better for flashing but you should be ok either way to try unlocking shaders

My answer to this is:It has Dual BIOS switch, has crazy black shroud and fan is on rear of GPPU PCB.

backup bios with gpuz
open bios in rbe (radeon bios editor) in extras? enable 6970 shaders option, save as
create boot usb/floppy/cd/whatever
flash with atiflash command line tool off boot dos (not windows)

atiflash -p 0 card.rom
(assuming you have 1 card installed)

if shader count has gone up in gpuz it worked.

Can the flashing happen within windows? As I am rubbish with cmds and other high risk ops at boot time.is there a utility thats all windows based? Will modding this card void my warranty?
