Yeah, thanks for the heads up.I never thought a govt would be interested in taking out a rival currency (other than it's own of course).Despite most of that letter being blacked out,it makes reference to Nakamoto (surname of satoshi) which I think pretty much confirms that they are specifically planning to do something about the bitcoin currency (they see it as a threat to their interests, whereas we see it as a liberator including myself)

I do like the idea that I can convert my money into BTC and then literally carry the money on my USB key drive without having physical cash on hand.Beats having to carry a fat wallet everywhere.

I know that even though the OP may sound like a troll,I find this info valuable as to why the currency's value has stayed low for quite sometime.Since most of the document was blacked out,I can only make assumptions as to how they are targetting bitcoins.

Here are my guesses:
1.misinformation campaign (works wonders for anyone opposed to BTC and want it to disappear)
2.hacking
3.An unknown method that affects the currency.

Even thought I find that document useful,I'd still be more convinced if there was an unaltered version availble for all to see. Please find the unaltered version so that we can all see this for ourselves (as some people will understandably still be skeptical after seeing that document).
1042  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can I mine Bitcoins with my smartphone? on: September 28, 2011, 10:07:53 PM
... this can't be a serious question that requires serious answers.
It sounds like a reasonable question to me.

But there's no point mining on a smartphone. Running bitcoind on my Nokia N900 yields 0.13 Megahashes/second. On average that would generate a block once every 335445 days (about once every thousand years).

You might do slightly better on a smartphone with a GPU, but the next difficulty increase due in a few days will take care of that. The GPU on a smartphone is nothing like the GPU on a 5870 card.

Where do I find a mining app for my N900 phone? How to setup mining? I wish to complement what I already have in mining ability.I know the implications of mining on a phone so  please don't debate with me about that as I am aware but I choose to experiment and use auch an app on my N900.CPU id OC'd from 600MHz to 1150MHz.Now if only there was a GPU miner for Nokia N900 phone. Also how to overclock N900s GPU to speed up GUI?
1043  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / I need the fastest, most efficient miner on OSX on: September 25, 2011, 10:34:14 AM
Hi guys,
This may seem like a strange request but I'm looking for the faster CPU and GPU miners for mac OSX.I noticed that RPC,the only GUI miner I know of,is incredibly inefficient compared to other CPU miners on OSX (ok I know CPU is worthless for BTC mining but I mine other currencies with the CPU which I trade in for BTC). Whats the best CPU miner for OSX that can be setup easily (installs and runs easily)?

Next is the GPU side of things. Is there a GPU miner for OSX that is the fastest and can be easily setup?
The ability to use performance enhancing flags or OC'ing within the app would be a bonus (as I found out the GPU on MBP mid 2010 model is heavily underclocked.stock speed should be about ~500MHz not 370MHZ like now.I found this out on a site that specs hardware for MBPs)

I know that mining on an MBP is next to pointless in the current climate but as I use free elec at work (and VPN to mask my activities) and mine alternative currencies as well as BTC it is worth while and is a net gain for me.85W of power use from an MBP is nothing compared to a heavily kitted out desktop with 3 Hd6990 cards (where the substantial power use could get you into trouble at work more easily)

Thank you

Thats very helpful SAC.Next difficulty will drop :-)
1045  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Great Reason To Stop Mining on: September 24, 2011, 09:18:46 PM
I've noticed that the difficulty has dropped a bit but I still feel that most people will simply keep mining anyway despite the higher utility bill costs and a low value BTC at the moment.I do agree that if more of the unprofitable miners just hang up the gloves for a bit,the difficulty will drop.I hope the difficulty starts to drop off faster soon. How long does it take for difficulty to change? How can we tell what the difficulty will be next?
1046  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: FPGA Miner Design for Sale to Someone willing to Market It on: September 17, 2011, 07:27:04 AM
I like the sound of the entry and higher end FPGA boards. Is there an academic discount for those? As I go to uni sometimes. Still a good price for the power use/performance.Can you ship to UK? I'm interested as long as the prices stay good and that they live up to the claims made on here. Are those boards multi-FPGAs that are also overclocked? Because the pricing seems rather too good to be true.1 of those FPGAs would the equivalent of several GPUs if I had several HD6950s all OC'd (the higher end board would be equivalent to several of those).

Amazing if true. What payments do you take?
1047  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: What's the latest on 7xxx series from radeon? on: September 17, 2011, 07:17:01 AM
I know something that will really help you about the HD7990.It will have 6400 shaders instead of 3072 for HD6990.HD7990 will also use only 300W max of power at full load whereas HD6990 would use up to 450W (esp in uber mode which is what you'd probably use for mining),the tech appears to be 28nm.There will be 6GB VRAm as opposed to 4GB VRAM now on HD6990 (irrelevant for mining though)

Honestly I think you are talking out your ass because nothing is even plausible in your post.

http://lenzfire.com/2011/09/amd-radeon-hd-7000-series-graphic-card-details-exposed-40795/2/

1) The 7990 will almost certainly be 2x downclocked 7970s.  7970 has 2048 cores so 7990 would have two of them for 4096 cores combined.  Unless AMD plans to break tradition (and proven profitable track record for 4 generations of graphics cards) and put   3 and 1/8 GPU in the 7990 it won't have 6400 cores.

2) The HD 6990 doesn't draw 450W.  NO graphics card draws 450W because the PCIe limit is 375W.   75W from the bus.  75W from 6pin connector, 150W from 8pin connector.  The 6690 has 1 6pin & 1 8pin making max draw 300W.  Even heavily overclocked actual draw is ~260W.

Granted a lot is unknown or rumor but at least the rumors are plausible based on what we do know (AMD track record, advantages of die shrink to 28nm, current card performance, etc).

How about this? http://hw-lab.com/specs-for-amd-radeon-hd-7990-disclosed.html
Still think I'm talking out of my ass here?
That shows I'm right about the no of shaders and I was also right about the power use fully.I did say that the HD6990 used up to 450W in uber mode. Please actually read my posts before replying. It is a documeneted FACT that the HD6990 does use up to 450W but only in uber (or Overclocked switch position) mode so how's that wrong, exactly?

Hope this helps you as well mousepotato :-) (with your sauce?)

I honestly think that the HD7990 will sell well esp for us miners/gamers.As a film editor/maker,I also make use of powerful GPUs  for processing jobs as well when i'm not mining.
1049  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: FPGA mining for fun and profit on: September 16, 2011, 10:20:51 PM
Is it possible to have an FPGA or ASIC board that runs independantly from a computer but has flash memory onboard, built in Wi-fi or Ethernet, and has it's own power supply as I wish to bypass the computer competely and save loads of energy while mining lots more. How much would these boards cost and for what performance/power use can I expect from them? Can yiu ship to UK? Do you have a shop?

1050  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How can I maximize my mining speed? on: September 16, 2011, 08:03:06 PM
To reach high overclocks, you'll have to Overvolt your card.Bear in mind however that this carries extra risks like premature wear and tear as well as heat issues, higher risk of frying/burning out your card and causing hardware damage.

My card is a Radeon Hd6950 and I get 405MHash/s from it.
I try these flags -v -w64 -f2 -r5

I use the latest version of GUIMiner (at time of writing this, the Aug version) as this contains several optimisations so you get more hash power for less effort due to more efficient coding in the app itself.

Clocks info:
905MHZ core clock ( or was it 908MHZ?)
320MHz mem clock
Volts 1105mV (overvolted by 0.005 Volts or was it more than that,I can't remember fully?))
Fans are at 55% so only moderately noisy.

Also another thing to consider is that not all cards are good at overclocking. Each GPU is different in terms of overclocking and overvolting abilities.

Let me know how the OC'ing goes.Hope it goes well :-)

Hi,
I know that this isn't strictly a businesss but I am offering some artwork designs (I made) for sale with BTC.It's on my blog:www.film2240.wordpress.com

Once there look for the post that mentions artworks for sale on there. At present there is only 1 artwork available but there will be others in the coming months. If you guys are interested please spread the word as I could use the help (to make bitcoin even better to use) :-)
1052  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Multi-GPU Mining: Core i5 Integrated GPU and Discrete AMD? on: September 16, 2011, 07:49:04 PM
Hi there,
I was actually curious about this setup myself. If the onboard intel GPU (built into CPU) supports OpenCL or another technology that enables GPGPU computing then it can be mined on.Try GPU caps utility or something to check what that GPU supports. As for mining with both intergrated GPU and discrete GPU,that is possible if the intel GPU also supported GPGPU as well.

I'd personally look into AMDs APUs because their intergrated GPUs can be mined on in addition to the discrete GPUs in the system as well.Check the mining hardware comparison to be sure though if going down the AMD APU route as this is planned for a future dedicated mining rig as my current mining is done on my main PC which is also used for other stuff as well so it's not really a dedicated mining as such.

When you check with GPU caps,if you can upload a screen grab of what it says,I may be able to help you a bit more on that.
1053  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Possbility of a switch over? on: September 12, 2011, 09:24:13 PM
closed source software can sometimes hide backdoors possibly compromising security or phoning home somewhere which is why I try and use as much open source software as possible to show that these backdoors are not welcome in software as we can all see the code in open source.
1054  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Difficulty Should Be Falling Faster on: September 12, 2011, 06:10:40 PM
I agree with the fact that the difficulty should be dropping much faster than it is at the moment.I mine on SC and when difficulty drops to less than 1000 I CPU mine the I0coins while GPU mining SCs to maximise the use of my 2 comps without spending extra.Have you ever noticed how the difficulty on I0coins and SC drops quite a bit if some people stop mining them for even 2 days? I know this isn't related to BTC but I think BTC should follow the model of SC when it comes to difficulty management but some people can then say that BTC needs to stay the way it is.I stopped mining BTC directly over a month ago and mine alternative currencies to trade for BTC which I then exchange for money.

I think that if more people use BTC for trading for good and services again, that the value will actually rise properly, instead of now where it rises a bit then drops again.I'm selling one of my artwork designs on my blog and can be purchased with BTC as I wish to experience what it's like to be a trader/business as well as a speculative miner/investor in BTC.To find this, access my blog and look for the post that mentions it.This is a first time so don't expect things to be perfect but certainly any comments (positive or constructive critisism) will be welcome. The comments section is however moderated to stop spammers on there so I hope this helps.

Is there a site/community that deals with the creative side of things? As I don't know any of them (deviant art pays a small 20% to it's artists and 80% it keeps for itself).

Thanks
1055  Economy / Marketplace / Re: The fastest HD 69xx miner. 250 BTC. on: September 11, 2011, 11:43:26 PM
It is not free. I still charge for hdminer. And I am still faster than today's best on HD 69xx. I benchmarked cgminer w/phatk at 691 Mh/s on a stock 6990, compared to my 708 Mh/s.

However my speed advantage is now so thin, that I doubt anyone is interested in spending 250 BTC on hdminer... The rich feature set of cgminer probably outweighs any performance advantage I have anyway.

So you're the guy who thinks it's smart to charge for things? Even though the 'speed boost' is so thin that it should either be free or expect a backlash like being pressured and forced to pay for a TV licence in the UK.I for one will refuse to pay until it is freely accessible like the TV licence.I don't watch TV yet I'm forced and threatened to buy one.

I don't mind being charged about 5BTC but 250BTC is taking the mick.If you want my respect, you'll rectify the pricing or give it for free if you can't find a reasonable price people are willing to pay. That's my 2 cents :-)

How well will this perform on my HD6950 card (shader unlocked,Oc'd to 902MHz,320MHz mem clock, overvolted by an extra 0.005mV)?I get 402MHash/s atm.I want to know what kind of speeds I can get with your app.
1056  Economy / Marketplace / Re: The fastest HD 69xx miner. 250 BTC. on: September 11, 2011, 10:18:13 PM
Where can I download this miner? As I wish to boost my performance as well on my HD6950 card.is this free? If not what's the charge? Why charge for this app?I'm sure that someone with the know how can probably replicate this app and then it'll be pointless to charge for this if successfull. Here's an idea, can someone with the know how, create a free version of this app with similar performance characteristics please?

Thank you

1058  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: NEW ATI 7000 architecture info on: September 09, 2011, 09:42:27 AM
Sounds like I was misled by an inaccurate article then.I wondered how is it possible to have 6400 shaders up from 3072? At first I thought it was true, then after reading the posts here, this may not be the article I thought it was.

Looks like I shouldn't expect a hashrate that's double the HD6990 that we have now.I wonder if it's possible to have more than 2 GPUs on the same board (yes I know power use will be very high and out of spec in this arrangement, but I ask as I wish to have as much power as possible from a GPU as CPUs don't give me enough power for mining/GPGPU accelerated filmmaking and editing)?

Either way I do look forward to the improvements.I wonder how much a shader unclocked Hd6950 would be worth so that I can upgrade to the new cards if needed and sell off the old one (on the new cards release)?

Check this out:http://videocardz.com/28708/AMD-RADEON-hd-7990-how-powerful-can-it-be

New info about the cards.I wonder what MHash/s I can get from that card? I was blown away after seeing those specs :-)

Can charities donate some hash power for a day to help people with experiments, maybe? Just curious :-)

Huh

err nevermind Embarrassed.I guess this isn't really the place to discuss such matters.Sorry for any confusion caused by my query.I've dropped the idea as this isn't the proper place to ask.I can't find anywhere to help that I know of so I just assumed that a charity could somehow help (thats whats made me ask the question in the first place).
