1221  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Optimizing ATI performance, 6950 in particular on: July 02, 2011, 07:13:01 PM
What flags can I use in GUIminer that can :
a.boost my performance (as I only get 290MHash/s stock speeds as Im afraid of burning out my card by OC'ing,or flashing HD6970 BIO which I don't wanna do)
b.Allow me to use other apps without freezing my PC
c.Keep temperatures and noice under control as that fan is very load at 60% and above.

It's a Sapphire board,(has AMD logo on PCI-E connector and bought it on 29/06/2011 so I don't know if it's even unlockable but was on sale)

Also I need clear steps on how to just unlock shaders without moding into HD 6970.

Thank you
1222  Bitcoin / Mining support / HElp.AMD stream SDk wont install and poor mining performance on: July 02, 2011, 05:20:06 PM
I need help

When I installed all drivers for my Radeon HD6950 card, the catalyst log showed that installation completed with warnings. I clicked to see what it was,and it said that 'AMD APP SDK Runtime failed to install'

What is this?and how can it affect apps like GUIMiner and Media Expresso?

Installer was run with admin rights (UAC disabled as well) on Win 7 64bit.

What can I do to make this work?

Also mining performance is poor as it's only 292MHash/s at best at the moment.

What do I need to do in either:
catalyst or GUIminer (what flags should I use that will boost performance and keep temps under control)?

1223  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: is there a miner for the iphone or mobile device? on: July 01, 2011, 11:52:17 AM
forget it, and yes, even if it was ok, it would use your battery in no time

come one, you could plug it in at work and they'd be none the wiser!   Grin

Exactly that's why I like this idea because no1 can then 'snoop' on my activities. All they'll see is a mobile phone charging, not a massive hike in power consumtion that results from multiple mining rigs.I use my laptop at work when it's mining for the same reason :-)

I just wish Nokia N900 mining client was available because where I mine, things are heavily monitored and any increase in power use draws criticism and harassment (by authorities if it's far too high)
1224  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: [Linux] Autominer v0.3.2.5 - GPU Monitor, Downtime Swapper, New Interface on: July 01, 2011, 11:32:00 AM
can this gr8 script be run on mac/windows? As I have 2 computers (1 PC-now upgraded to radeon HD 6950 GPU and my macBook Pro used for backup mining).

Can a GUI version be made as well for these 2 platforms (Win/Mac)?

Is it possible for there to be a feature where the GUI loads initially until you start mining and then it goes to terminal so as to kill overhead running a GUI all day long would create?

Thank you
1225  Economy / Services / Re: Mom's Basement Mining Contracts - From $52 per week! on: July 01, 2011, 12:03:32 AM
I like this idea of low cost, effective mining. Can you offer like CTO (Customise to order services) if need be?

I can't go more than a Radeon HD 6950 GPU on my own (due to PSU overload risk and budget cutbacks) so maybe this service can supplement my mining as well as help other people.

Since I like your idea a lot,I'll share my system specs (of PC) as my way of saying thank you (do remember that this is also used for professional filmmaking/advanced research as well as mining):
Core i7 920 CPU stock 2.67ghz (OC's 3ghz,power save 1.35ghz)
6GB RAM DDR3
3 HDDs
GPU will be upgraded to Radeon HD 6950 very soon once it arrives
Win 7 64bit OS
Enermax 620W PSU
DVD burner

1.Can payment be accepted by Moneybookers?
2.Can your services also be used in a 'supporting role' for any mining I do myself? as in give my total mining an extra boost or help mine when my systems need to cool down and recover

1226  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Miners quitting en masse -- so it begins. on: June 30, 2011, 11:43:36 PM
It sounds like you're not really talking about buying equipment for mining, but rather upgrading your professional equipment which happens to work well for mining.

Angelus, your understanding of my setup is well, faultless (perfect) as I'm rely on it for professional filmmaking as well as mining.

I'd also like to give a piece of advice to all those who feel like that they got a raw deal in mining due to rising difficulty.

My advice is:If you already upgraded your computer just for mining, and mining then becomes unfeasible, don't despair as you will still have serious firepower under the hood for all your working and gaming needs.

This is what i've been doing as I've adopted to mining rather late so sure it's less profitable now than before, but I say keep mining while the train's still moving.
1227  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Anyone know why the network hashing rate has gone down today? on: June 30, 2011, 11:34:56 PM
It's summer here in Las Vegas, NV and I get the feeling I'll be laughing at what most of you are calling "heat" wherever you're from. I've actually had to offload a couple nodes to the homes of friends and family to keep my apartment under 85F, it's pretty miserable really.

It's hot in UK as well. The problem is that even though the UK actually has cooler summers than USA,it's the humidity that's really problematic there.I know cus I'm from UK.The uncomfortable heat (plus humidity) is really causing me problems now for my 2 mining computers. I've had to leave my laptop running overnight 24/7 for 1.5wks now while Pc rests overnight to beat the heat. It's bad news because you're not really profiting anymore and can just about cover electricity costs (but that's it).The part of UK I'm on can be as hot as 35oC or more in the tough summers there and the humidity is quite high there as well.

Just adding my experience to share it with you guys.

P.S.Please don't mention why laptop GPUs are crap or anything else about the 'proper' way to mine but this is about beating the heat, not highest performance (I think).I am also fully aware of the risks and benefits of certain setups and practices.Thank you.
1228  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Miners quitting en masse -- so it begins. on: June 30, 2011, 11:16:02 PM
FYI, I offered the guy $175 for his 5870 -- that was it.

At this point, I can only afford to buy used cards when it's a good deal, since I don't want my payback period to be anything longer than 50 days. 50+ days is too great of an unknown.

You should meditate on the wisdom: "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread."

I wonder how long the payback is on a Radeon HD 6950 GPU that cost me £178.50 (equivalent $286.51).I know that this may not be the best value for mining power but I don't care. Why?Because my GPU is used for other things like gaming, research, film making/editing,encoding as GPGPU is far faster than my Core i7 920 CPU with monster sized HD 1080P raw, captured footage. So  when mining becomes unviable,it's still a solid investment for me as this'll boost my film making work by leaps and bounds for my uni work (and degree) compared to my old Radeon HD 4670 GPU (Even though it's Oc'd to the max,it simply can't cope anymore with my work or mining)

Do you guys think this upgrade path is a sound one or is it stupid for my situation?
1229  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Anybody else getting slaughtered by this latest difficulty? on: June 30, 2011, 11:05:51 PM
If you were to power your laptop alone with solar power, you are going to need about 150W of solar panels. This will adequately charge the battery while the sun is putting out it's ideal power and cover efficiency loss. The panels plus their charge controllers alone will run you hundreds. (eBay is borked right now so I'll add better price estimate later) You need a deep cycle battery of decent size for this. Do NOT get a car or starter battery. You will ruin those in a short amount of time. Amp hours are your friend here and cranking amps aren't needed for this. The battery + inverter will be another $100. I got a 400W inverter off Newegg on a sale for $20. Expect $10 per 100W normally though. Pure sine wave is an added cost, but you don't need it for what you are doing.

Making your own power is cool and all, but you have to realize that when it comes to solar panels, there is no such thing as low cost. If you are trying to save money, look somewhere else. You will end up paying more for these parts to produce the electricity than you will in electricity from the utility. I pay $2.00 a day for my rigs, but am making $15 a day. My electricity rate is $0.101 per kwh. What's your's?

Also, please, use proper grammar and spell check when writing large blocks of text. People will be kinder.

in part of Uk i'm in,electricity rate is about $0.23 (equivalent £0.14 in UK,this has now risen to £0.20 now).Solar panels are cheap where I am but deep cycle batteries are pricey plus inverter and charge regulator.

A solar system typically has solar panels, deep cycle battery, charge regulator and of course and inverter (not needed if running off 12V.Runnng a MBP from airline/car adaptor means you run from 12V and can skip on the inverter)

Also a MBP uses no more than 85W at a time from mains when under full load and charging the battery at the same time. When my MBP is only charging the battery but idling,it uses 66W for fast charging (in 2hrs)

When battery is full, but GPU is under load my MBP uses 50-55W (60W if monitor is on as well) whereas CPU uses more power and gives less performance than GPU mining with it. I got these watt figures by using a watt meter. Also running from mains adaptor and through an invertor means losing some of the energy to conversion so it's best to just run a MBP (MacBook Pro) with it's airline/car adaptor I think as its straight from 12V supply.

In response to the poster who asked me to double check my grammar and spell check it,well can you please be more constructive and show me where the spell check tool is on this forum, and I will take your tip more positively in the future, thank you.Problem is I'm always busy with everything else,I type fast and I have wireless keyboard, so sometimes, certain keys won't fire if you can understand what I mean (say If I type this sentee and the c key doesn't fire sometimes or it gets jumbled up between reciever and keyboard,it happens sometimes, like this 'im tstng my keybrd' this shows that several keys are not 'firing' when they should be sometimes. or 'hte','teh') I guess this forum requires a higher standard of spelling and grammar whereas all other sites I go to don't care as long as I'm vaguely understandable, that's all and I've also come to expect this to be universal (of course this isn't the case).I'm stuck with current Keyboard until next upgrade cycle in 2014.(each upgrade cycle is 4 to 6 years due to budget cuts and is generally more cost effective for me than it is to maintain an aging system).Thank you for your understanding about the issues.

On a lighter note however,My new PC case has arrived and all neccessary parts will be upgraded when it all arrives like Case, new fans (as cases supplied ones are crap for cooling as its the Coolermaster Silencio 550 case as i expect quiet and cool computing for good price) and Radeon HD 6950 (old stock on sale that may have unlocking feature for it's shaders).
1230  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Anybody else getting slaughtered by this latest difficulty? on: June 29, 2011, 10:02:59 PM
0.06 BTC/day is less than electricity.  That may be what he's trying to say.

If you're that desperate, go check ebay for buy it nows.  I got a pair of 5870's for $500.  They're probably even cheaper right about now Smiley

I get about 750-850 MH/s pool mining, which at present difficulty is about 0.50 BTC.  So, it's still covering electricity, and maybe a little bit more, but not much.  At 0.06 you might as well use this:

Ok guys, can u plz take it easy on the replies cus I'm trying to say that once hte upgrade is complete I won't be in that mess ny more now ok.I come here to ask for suggestions and share my experiences on mining.

I'm still hearing nothing about the best low cost design for a solar generator for the laptop which will be used for something else that I can build easily and cheaply (other than mining ok).I'd like to change the direction of the conversation now as I feel the reponses are getting a little far now esp hte phone idea plus the suggsetions that I'm desparate are not helping me.I'm doing this mainly as a series of experiments.

Radeon HD6950 GPU can get me 390-450 max MHash/s from wot i heard from a friend of mine on the PC.I only add extra comps to boost my overall MHash/s to see how many work PC/Mac comps I can get away with mining with (u can't get fired for mining as long as u don't mess up their systems)

Posters plz understand this. The whole laptop and Pc mining thing is an 'interm solution' until the upgrade is successfully complete as im waiting 4 my GPU 2 get here,NOT a permanent solution as this is unviable for the long term.I know this fully and I am reasonably competent with computers (In fact i spent a decade working with them, studying them, creating art on them, making films on them, experimenting with them, upgrading them, heck even done basic programming on them,I have reasonable experience on multi-platform setups PC/Mac/Linux as I work on them in my day to day for film making, writing up seminars/reports and mining as well)

I hope this clarifys things 4 u.
1231  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: [20 Bitcoins bounty] For instructions on how to install ATI 58XX drivers on ESXi on: June 29, 2011, 09:43:13 PM
Hi,

To be CRYSTAL clear I do not want to mine inside a virtual machine!
To be CRYSTAL clear I do not want to mine inside a virtual machine!
To be CRYSTAL clear I do not want to mine inside a virtual machine!

I want to do mining on ESXi v4.1 because I want to reuse the box for Windows Servers that do not require graphics cards.  I would use Hyper-V BUT each CPUs is running at 100% per GPU.   This is a bug in the windows Video drivers not sure if it's fixed in v11.6 of the graphics drivers yet (have not tested it) but I love VMWare's vSphere client software so even if it works I would rather use ESXi.

Anyhow if someone can layout how to install it and get it working so I can mine on ESXi it's worth some bitcoins!
Who knows you may even start a craze of server managers installing Graphics cards in their servers to mine for bitcoins or namecoin or whatever.

Thanks in advance

Davinci
What is ESXi? A piece of specialist mining hardware, like those FPGA devices i heard about fro hte bitoin mining hardware comparison wiki?
1232  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Anybody else getting slaughtered by this latest difficulty? on: June 29, 2011, 09:40:19 PM
Look muffin,I know that my current approach is ineffective but it serves as an interm temp 'solution' until the PC is upgraded to a Radeon HD 6950 gpu.I can't run 24/7 on mining as this is unfeasible in my area due to overheating issues as well as having to make budget cuts (I'm effectively forced to,so I hav no choice in the matter)

My laptop runs 24/7 cus heat output and energy use is low. If u have ny helpful suggestions for building like a solar generator system to run my laptop, elec will b free for that laptop and thus reduce my costs as there'll be room for a more powerful PC running about 17hrs a day a wk (as this is a gd in between solution for me between mining maximum btc that I can do and still keep power use/heat output under control)

My PC is mainly used for special Ops not mining, however they can include mining, experiments and processing the films I make after editing them on macbook pro (as I need Final Cut Pro 7 tools as required from workplace to use) as well as just working normally as well. The laptop is usually used to backup my main PC so that I always have the edge in my work place in terms of combined processing power from CPU+GPU from both computers linked together working on those huge 1080P HD film files that can reach 100GB+ at a time when it's RAW captured footage ok.

I still want to be allowed flexible mining when I can,so that I can mine while working on my films at the same time with 2 comps combined nythin is possible 4 me.Compared to the guys n filmmakers at my workplace my 2 computers are unstoppable  Cheesy
1233  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Anyone else get busted by the cops for "suspicious" energy consumption! on: June 29, 2011, 09:19:53 PM
Someone start selling mining licenses  Cheesy

Count me in for selling mining licences if option is there, but how do I start (is my question.Still thinking)

Also i think it's ridiculous for the feds to bust ur door 4 mining lol even tho it's not a pot growing op. I wouldn't b suprised if this happened in UK where I am mining from atm (despite high elec prices I still just about profit sourt of)

Thankfully the part of the UK im mining from, the met police can't bother u at they stick 2 London and large cities there. In some parts of UK,it can be quiet so u won't get hassled too much unless u get busted for hacking though.I don't think they're bothered about mining atm tho as long as ur elec usage is low enough not to be suspicious. At this point I must make myself clear in that, I do not condone illegal activity of any kind however but this is more about advice for people who mine BTC.

My advice in general is,once in a while just shut down ur computers for a brief period.You can fix 2 issues that way;
1.Overheating if there and
2.Brief periods of having switched off the computers will reduce ur elec bill/use a bit so it's all gd (and reduce ur chancs a bit of being hassled over high elec use).

I hope this helps ny of u who r in similar situation :-)

Mining Userbars
I was bored, thought the other userbars were ugly, here's what came out.

Supported Pools
  • BTC Guild
  • Deepbit
  • Slush

Things to come
  • More pools supported
  • Different styles of userbars available

An example is in my signature. You can make your own at my site.

Any suggestions, comments, criticisms, etc. are welcomed.
can a userbar be made for my pool bitcoins.lc please,as I like knowing my total mining ability online?
1236  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Anybody else getting slaughtered by this latest difficulty? on: June 29, 2011, 08:50:10 PM
Hi guys,
I saw this post and I thought that I should share my experiences as a miner.

In the early days,I did this solo for 3wks b4 realising that the smarter option 4 me is to mine in a pool.
Shortly after I added my laptop in addition to my PC (Has Radeon Hd 4670 GPU will be upgraded soon to radeon HD 6950 GPU) during the day to boost production to 0.06btc per day then. This was achieved by running my PC for 14hrs a day (cant do 24/7 due to overheating issues and high electric rates in my area) alongside my laptop (MBP mid 2010 with Nvidia GT330M GPU) during the day.

This sounds strange as during the day my elec usage combined is only 190W with 2 computers combined (140W total for my desktop and 50W for laptop with GPU at full load but CPU idle) which was much lower than expected. This helps keep elec cots under control and stop those overheating issues as well.

But the difference is at night,I shut off my PC but keep my laptop to maximise my chances of getting a small trickle of btc whilst eliminating excess power use at night (by switching off everything to do with PC and eliminating wall vampires-a term used by eco conscious ppl to describe appliances that draw power when seemingly 'off'.)

I then make sure the laptop is run from the mains (so that it doesn't waste energy charging up the battery as well as GPU mining) then put the screen to sleep and HDD to idle mode to save about 12Watts of power.

This may sound strange as a strategy but its effective at keeping my elec bill low while getting those much valued btc (so I still make more than I pay for the elec this way as the Pcs hard work compensates for its power use and hte laptop pays for itself, sort of)

If u guys can help me build a low cost solar power system where it consists of a low cost solar panel that can charge the dep cycle batt in garden during the day then at night run laptop from inverter that way i run on free elec overnight and when early morning comes,3 hrs on laptops batt while solar generator is charging the deep cycle batt so that reduce the burden on mains elec then.

Does this sound stupid to u guys or is it an interesting approach to the problem?
1237  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: flashing a 6950 with 1GB using the 6970 with 2GB BIOS on: June 29, 2011, 02:37:29 PM
If you want modding/overclocking options, ask on an overclocking forum (i.e. EOCF).

A 2GB card likely will have different memory timings, memory, size, etc. programmed into the bios that all could bork your card. Your 1GB card is not capable of running these settings at default.
I think this poster is right on this one.Flashing a BIOS on hardware that's not made for it will have nothing buit problems anyway. The only feasible way I see is to export a BIOS copy with RBE,(and then make sure to have 2 copies,1 stock and 1 modded copy-with shaders unlock),then unlock shaders in that program then flash it back, the success rate is higher than flashing a different hardware's BIOS on though,as you're simply flashing the same hardware's BIO except with the extra shaders unlocked, therefore boosting performance and crunching power for mining BTC.

I hope this helps.
1238  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Yet Another Video Card Comparison... on: June 29, 2011, 09:37:40 AM
I found that Sapphire 5770 GPUs have better fans and heatpipes that keep the temperature about 10 C cooler than alternatives.

Thank You.

I'll look for those ones then. Just needed some way to differentiate. You didn't need to select special versions like reference ones or anything? I would just order them online so whatever comes is what I get. I guess that's what most buyers do anyway.

A way to look for reference cards is to look for the AMD logo neat the PCI-E connector (the bit that goes into your mobo) I hear.I hope this helps.

I'm buying the last easy to get stock of Radeon Hd 96950s with reference board as pictured.I hope this is still reference,in UK.The easy to get stock is £178.50 for that gpu from pixmania,so if ny1 still wants what looks like an unlockable card, please go for it b4 they restock with permanently 'locked' cards,if u r looking for a radeon HD 6950 card that is.

Does this look like an unlockable card to u guys?http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/8766002/art/pixmania/radeon-hd-6950-2-gb-gddr5.html

Plz advise me on this.

After that stock is gone, you'll have to pay at least £220 or more to get that same card on reference in the pic.
1239  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Yet Another Video Card Comparison... on: June 28, 2011, 06:28:31 PM
***EDIT*** Revised chart to include "Stock"  vs "Tweaked" results and show the possible gains to be had.

Notes:

- The MHash performance and wattages are an average of the values from the Wiki site.  There were a few cards that I pulled wattage information from other sources due to not being listed on the Wiki.  So don't be too surprised if your card does not perform as well as these averages at stock speeds.

- I did not list cards that were no longer/not currently available with two exceptions: the 5830 and the 6990.  Nobody has the 5830 available for a "reasonable price," and nobody has the 6990 available.  I didn't include eBay for these availability considerations (although you can get used 5830's there for about what I listed it for), or the large number of Google/Pricewatch shopping vendors that I consider to have questionable reputability.  YMMV.

- I pulled the majority of prices from Newegg and Tiger Direct.  I did not include prices for tax, shipping, or rebates.

- The 5770 still has the best overall performance for a combination of power consumption and price.  Newegg has a 5770 for $89.99 after rebate, making it an even better deal.  Get 'em while they're still available... the rebate is only good till 6/30, and unlike most rebates, it's good for two cards per household.  The 6870 makes a solid second place choice, but I'd probably recommend spending extra on the 6950 if you're going multi GPU and looking to maximize your performance vs space.  Of course the 6970's and 5870's are still kicking around for the brute-force-money-is-no-object fellows... ^_^

***POST REVISION***

- I've taken the averages of the lowest two scores to use as the "Stock" performance numbers.  This can account for some variance between cards that come tweaked from the manufacturer as well as different settings/mining apps.

- I've taken the averages of the highest two scores to use as the "Tweaked" performance numbers, to be used as theoretical gains.

- With these revisions, the 6950 is painted in an even more favorable light when you factor in the possibility of unlocking dormant shaders and overclocking.  The 6970 also rises to the occasion with great performance vs power consumption if you don't mind the higher entry cost.  Older cards like the 5830/5870 offer great performance/watt but are unfortunately held back by pricing and availability of these discontinued parts.  Buying second hand is a mixed bag, as people generally want more than the cards are worth (eg, people asking for $200+ for 5830's).

Thoughts?

Glad to know that my HD4670 GPU can do much better than wot I'm getting which is 34MHash/s even when OC'd to the max in Catalyst which is disappointing.I do wonder if there's ny point in mining though now,cus the difficulty has risen so much that it would remain unviable for me to run my MBP mid 2010 notebook with my PC as well combined ina  pool even.

Why does difficulty rise so much every few days?is this by design?or is something wrong with my systems? To make matters worse 4 me is I'm having no luck finding HD 6950 GPUs that are unlockable still on the shelves in Uk now as cus I'm left with VTX3D GPUs as known to be unlockable but they brick rather easily as I've found out, can't remember the source tho.So it's either stop mining for me completely or take a gamble and buy locked HD 6950.I need advice on wot to do,cus I found these 2 cards:
1.http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/837172.79/art/sapphire-technology/radeon-hd-6950-2-gb-gddr5.html
2.http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/8766002/art/pixmania/radeon-hd-6950-2-gb-gddr5.html#

Are these unlockable and do u know wot BIOS file i can use for that 2nd card?As it isn't branded like sapphire or XFX cards?

I plan to order 1 very soon but I rly need the advice b4 doing so.
Thanks

I am working on building a good Ubuntu Live ATI ISO file today in an attempt to eliminate all of the hard drives by using USB thumb drives, that'll save on electricity as well as hardware costs going forward.

Hi xanadu,
I'm interested in using this myself as I also need to cut power costs. If this ISO is ready and contains a miner I can use such as GUIminer,or the equivalent (GUI),then can I please DL it from a link?

Thank you.
