1241  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Radeon Hd 6950 advice on: June 26, 2011, 12:16:52 PM
Guys, I need some advice on a few things about the radeon HD 6950 GPU that I plan on getting.

The things I need to know are:
1.Which manufacturers make versions of this gpu that can be unlocked to the full 1536 shaders successfully without turning it to HD 6970 GPU? (as high power use is an issue for me)
2.Which versions of the card can be unlocked and turned into HD 6970 is that's my only option successfully?
3.Is it better to unlock more shaders than it is to OC?or are they both as important to boost mining MHash/s rate?
4.I found a card that I'm not sure about that can be unlocked:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004ULFWAI/ref=asc_df_B004ULFWAI3344652?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&tag=googlecouk06-21&linkCode=asn&creative=22206&creativeASIN=B004ULFWAI

I found this to be the cheapest I can find, but can this card be unlocked with just BIO update (just modded bios without turning it to HD 6970) or does this require some soldering as reported in a few cases as well?

5.Is there a BIOS repository,or a help section on here or on the net where I can look up the right BIOs file?
6.Which tools are needed to flash it?
7.If the card I find isn't very good or unsuitable, can you please find me hte cheapest suitable GPU that can be unlocked without soldering or anything too complicated/risky for the UK?

Thank you guys and I look forward to your reponses. Smiley

Well, Considering this is the BitCoin Forums i doubt you'll get much more than a link to a nmae coin site.
And i am here to spite, Damnnit use google and goto a name coin site dont post on the bitcoin forums

Look I've used google to no avail,I've had a rough day today with an unbootable PC which was later fixed and interruptions in my mining to bitcoins.lc pool.Plz don't spite ppl who've had a rough day. It's unbecoming.I've reported your post for this and I'm locking this thread.
1243  Other / Off-topic / can someone on here please make a straight forward guide on setting up namecoin on: June 24, 2011, 08:00:53 PM
Hello
I've recently discovered what coud be a significant oppoutunity on the web. It's namecoin. The problem I have is why cant these things just be straight forward to setup from the get go,without knowing anyhting complex such as DNSs,domain registration, command line stuff n nyhting else thats stupidly complex.

Here's what i want straight forward answers to:
1.Is namecoin easy to setup in GUIMiner?
2.Please find me a namecoin pool, that allows me to setup an account with username and password,so that I know where to point my miners to get namecoins WITHOUT the needless pain of getting a domain name.
3.Why do these people who create things never think about ease of use like the guy who made hte official btc client?as He did a good job making it easy for people like me and it worked fin on my mac.
4.How can I mine solo and as part of a pool?
5.How can I exchange them for money?
6.How can I find out the exchange rate for namecions vs $ and other currencies?
7.I've followed all available tips via the cmd in win 7 yet nothing works as I had to make use of the cmd based program as there was no GUI at the time. The only 2 GUI versions I've seen so far are far too buggy and are NOT self contained like the Bitcoin Official client which has made setup a major problem for me.
8.I think that if software developers don't wanna get hassled or sued, then please make sure that any program you make is DESIGNED for the typical user and not a hard core command line geek.STOP keeping good things to yourself and let every1 else get a fair share ok.

I'm just frustrated at the unneccessary level of difficulty of these promising projects that are meant to make me money. Thanks to the constant stream of seemingly incomprehensible answers I'm getting on namecoin setup,I've never been more stressed and now experience burnout because a simple thing has turned awry and over complicated for a guy who just wants his work done as painlessly as possible.
I'm sure you can understand my frustration on getting things to work that are supposed to make me money but then it's suddenly got too hard.I could stick to BTC mining but the difficulty is too high for my GPU,so am forced to move to namecoin for easier mining on GPU.GPU upgrade in process but it's not easy, waiting 4 the gpu 2 b in stock again.

If you guys can rly straighten things up for em it'd be very much appreciated and take away all teh stress I had recently over it's complex setup
1244  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [announce] Namecoin - a distributed naming system based on Bitcoin on: June 24, 2011, 07:01:41 PM
I need hlep with namecoin as im compeltely new to this,I need to take this oppourtunity but hte instructions are too hard for me also the setup is very hard for me.

What is the value of namecoin vs other currencies?
2.How do I trade them?
3.How to set up pooled and solo mining on GUIminer?
4.How do I get a namecoin domain? As I hear that thats your username.

Can someone who knows this please walk me through the setup thank you?
1245  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: How can I setup my own pool? on: June 23, 2011, 11:19:44 PM
I also wish to setup my own pool bit this is for different reasons to the original poster.

Long story short,I need to start asap so how do I setup a mining pool with 2 comps.1 is an MBP mid 2010 and other is my PC.

1246  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Can someone please create a GUI mining client for nokia N900 on: June 23, 2011, 10:17:30 AM
What's your pay? Or do you expect someone to just code this for you to your requirements, for free?

BTW, before you spend money on it: Mining on slow devices like phones is pointless, you'd get like 0.00000000001 BTC per year Tongue Also the GPU of a phone probably doesn't do integeger ops, I doubt it can be used for hashing at all.

I understand that this request may seem crazy but this is part of a set of experiments I plan to carry out regarding the scaleability of distributed computing like projects like btc mining.

I had a theory once about whether it's be beneficial to include all possible computers (inside our mobile phones, car PC's PS3,laptops,PCs,Mac,Linux,perhaps even customised firmware we can just roll out on just about any device) for mining or whether it'd be better to simply let the PCs,Mac,Linux based rigs to just mine instead of trying to fit it onto every device imaginable.

I understand that experiments can cost money so I'm not exactly expecting the dev to do this all for free,When I can successfully mine 1BTC from my other experiment or more,I can use that to pay the dev.

The expected payout for this task will range from :free to about 2.5BTC max, depends on the feasibility of hte project. This project may even be scrapped anyway so don't get your hopes up on a payout,if it's just unfeasible.

From what I can see this just seems unfeasible so I'm locking this thread and consigning this idea into history. If you wish to contact me about this proposal, send me a PM with the subject 'ULE BTC miner' or N900 miner idea' then the msg u wish to send me so I can tell who's send me PMs for which thread, thank you.
1247  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: If you're thinking buying mining hardware, read this first on: June 22, 2011, 02:24:26 PM
At stock clocks, the difference will be around 140w. If unlock the shaders and overclock, probably 200w or more.

If its only for mining, don't overclock your cpu, or replace your I7 with an I3. You can also lower the memory clocks of your video card, it will lower the temps and power consumption a little bit. 250MHz seems the lowest I can set for DDR2 and DDR3 cards without affecting hashing performance, and 300-400 for GDDR5. Lowering mem clock can also help to stabilize your card at higher core clocks.
I need help underclocking my i7 in bios on mobo Asus P6T SE to reduce CPU power use while giving GPU more of the available power needed for mining. Also how to underclock 6GB RAM or wotever it is to reduce power use of these parts to make more power available for GPU mining.

If some1 knows how, then please either put it in this thrad if possible or if not link to it in ur reply.

Thanx n4l3hp 4 the advice on hte GPU power use.

P.S does someone know of a good cost effective SSD at 80GB and 120GB capacities thanx?.It needs to be long lasting, reliable, cost effective, fast and low power consumption.

1.How can I overclock my radeon Hd4670 beyond the maximum limits that catalyst imposes on me? (to avoid getting a new GPU 4 a while n getting the most from my current GPU til it burns out probably from heavy OC'ing)
MSI afterburner

Does it matter what brand of MainBoard/GPU you got, to use MSI AB? Thanks.

Sorry to hijack thread.

From my experience,it rly doesn't matter which brand of GPU u use but the only difference will be that if your GPU doesnt support certain fatures in MSI after burner then it isn't tweakable.

As for you mobo,it does matter I think as you should rly have an MSI mobo if u plan on tweaking certain mobo settings ok.This is just my guess but I hope this answers your question.
1249  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: If you're thinking buying mining hardware, read this first on: June 22, 2011, 11:11:41 AM
Depends on your electricity costs.  At full load a 5970 system will probably end up pulling ~500W from the socket (remember that PSUs are not 100% efficient).  During the summer, and taking into account home AC and the second watt problem, at $0.12/kWh you're looking at $86 a month.

Wrong. 5970 system shows for me ~350W power consumption cause I tried to be the smart half in the relationship between electricity bill-my wallet.

If ~350W is really the full system draw at the socket then at standard US rates you're looking at ~$60/month.

I have a question about power consumption of a card I'm planning to upgrade to.Radeon HD 6950.How much would a pc with this setup cost per month to run in US $ then in UK £:
Core i7 920 @2.67ghz stock (3ghz OC'd and 1.53GHZ max power savings mode) CPU
6GB RAM
3 HDDs
Asus P6T SE mobo (chipset also  in max power savings mode with deep voltage drops)
Radeon HD 4670 currently but will be upgraded later on.
620W Enermax Liberty PSU

I want to know (an estimate if possible) of power use in the following scenarios:
1.I Continue with the above setup with no upgrade (as Power is only 145W at the wall)
2.I swap out hte 4670 with 6950 GPU

How much will my power usage rise at load when the gpu is upgraded from the wall?
How much will this cost me in US $ and UK £ if possible.

I have joined a pool now to make things work faster.Pool is Bitcoin.lc.

ny help would b appreciated guys.

Film2240: The soldiers do limit how often you can return to them, and they require you to visit many different soldiers before returning. Check the wiki for tips on coin-hunting from soldiers. For instance, you may elect to skip smaller gifts and collect fewer larger gifts: the soldiers pay attention to the *number* of gifts that they give you, not the size. You can also make a small deposit - a tenth of a Bitcoin bypasses probably hours of running around to soldiers.

As to the idea about letting you reclaim large losses within X minutes, it's just too hard to make the math work: If the game worked this way, you could place a single large bet; if you win, withdraw the BTC. If you lose, reclaim the bet and try again.

Hi Teppy,
Thanx 4 the clear and concise answers to my questions. Can u link to the wiki please?

As for reclaiming losses,it probably is impossible anyway with the math involved, unless you make a completly different game based on different math/programming code. Some times it's better to deal with the losses. Also i never knew that just isn't possible with the math used in this case.I think the best advice I can give n should follow myself is this,if you can't deal with losing money, then you probably shouldn't be gambling in the first place.I learnt this the hard way in game and with £8 worth of lotto ticket scratchcards (which is why I gave those up afterwards). I think I'll stick to the non-gambling games such as herb hunting, feed the animals or get gifts from soldier statues from now on in the MMORPG.
1251  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Can someone please create a GUI mining client for nokia N900 on: June 21, 2011, 10:29:27 PM
On this device, there appears to be no memory limit per app on this device.

The device has 256MB RAM and 768MB Virtual memory on the phones flash memory if the 256MB RAM is insufficuent for any reason.

When RAM gets low,it simply extends into virtual memory in a seemlesss fashion but will be noticably slower than if the app was simply in RAM.

The phone has:
Maemo 5 OS (can be flashed with a custom MeeGo as well but not officially supported and is rather buggy atm)
256MB RAM
768MB Virtual flash memory
600MHZ ARM CPU
450MHZ GPU (I think)

32GB onboard storage (768MB used for Virtual memory,1.9GB for applications so it's about 28GB actual storage left after this.but still quite a lot)

I hope this answers your question nhodges.
1252  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Can someone please create a GUI mining client for nokia N900 on: June 21, 2011, 06:26:24 PM
I'm looking for a bitcoin client which can mine on the phones CPU and GPU as well (This is just for testing purposes to complement my experiments.I already know the pros and cons of cpu mining so please don't reply sayin that GPUs are superior or CPUs r worthless for mining because I already know that) that is easily installable through the app manager and that has a GUI instead of cmd as I'm no gd at cmd.

The client needs to have:
1.A wallet that I can keep btc mined on N900 phone and send to my other wallet on the PC as well
2.It should allow me to switch between CPU or GPU mining on that phone
3.It should have a reasonable GUI and MUST NOT require the use of cmd for any aspect of this.If cmd is required then that's a fail for me.
4.An option to minimise,start/pause/stop mining.
5.It MUST be able to mine when minimised as well as in focus.
6.This app must be accomponied with an start/pause/stop widget for the desktop to stop mining if need be as well if phone i unresponsive due to gpu mining at the touch of a button.
7.Have a priority switch like :low/normal/high so that i can use my phone normally when mining with only mininal cycles when needed.

Thank you for listening and I hope that this is possible and in development.
1253  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Request:I need USB portable versions of Bitcoin client and GUIminer on: June 21, 2011, 06:16:27 PM
3.I will have at least 250BTC at my disposal by the end of this experiment.
...only if you buy 250 BTC Wink

Also I don't see the reason why you want to do this as an "experiment". Mining really works, but even if you had 10 PCs with 4 top-notch GPUs each at hand it's not very likely that you'd see ANY block pop up.

Because of cost cutting measures I'm required to follow in terms of hardware I can upgrade to.It's easier for me to use multiple machines at work than it is 4 me to upgrade my gpu atm.
Mining does work (y do u think i'm disputing this?cus im not)

The experiment is to try and see if I can boost mining capability at the same time as cutting costs as well on my side like electricity and new GPU.It's kinda like outsourcing but that doesn't always work. I guess I'll never know unless I carry this out.

Why wouldn't I see a block pop up when I plan to mine on 10 PC's plus my own with top-notch GPUs in each one.Is there something I've missed on this?

ok.for example if my home PC only gives me 35.5MHash/s (which Im told would take 3.2yrs if im lucky with just that gpu) due to weak GPU but I then add 10 more with much better GPU that gives out say 150MHash/s.150 x 10=1500 +35.3 would be in TOTAL 1535.5MHash/s or 1.53GHash/s in total.

So a block should appear much faster than 1 pc could surely?

1255  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Free Bitcoins, No Catch on: June 21, 2011, 05:58:16 PM
Just an update on the free Bitcoins in soldier statues: I've made it so that a given soldier won't repeatedly give Bitcoins to the same character. There were already controls in place such that each character had to rotate through different soldiers, so this is sort of the reverse of that.

So far it's has worked well - as I write this, every soldier now has a gift of at least one Bitmill (1/1000 BTC), and quite a few have gifts of 2 or 3 Bitmills. Gifts of 10, 50, 500, and 5000 (5 BTC) happen from time to time, as well.

We're going to do some small-stakes Beetle Racing today, so come grab some gifts and try to multiply them if you're inclined!

I have a few questions on this Teppy

I've found myself on the recieving end of a problem where even though I haven't gotten much btm,the same soldiers who I go to (all of them) just won't give my anything after 3 days so I'm on the recieving end of a problem where I'm not getting hardly any while I see some players routinely get 50btm or above. Why is this?

2.Im on the recieving end of where te statues don't 'reset'on me after like more than 3 days and counting while I witness some players getting many btms from the same statues sometimes. This type of issues is ruining my experience and enjoyment of this game.If these issues aren't fixed then ppl like me will be forced to abandon this game altogether. If im asked 2 be a beta tester, then please make it worth my while.Like microsoft did by giving me free copies of win 7 during the testing period (well fully usuable betas actually)

3.Is it possible that a protection system originally designed to keep things 'fair' can be over zealous as well?

I also want to suggest some features that will help people like me:
1.If I lose a lot, there should be a feature for new like players,or inexperienced players like myself, where they can reclaim what they lose, but in exchange for this, they can't gamble for a while so that only players with problem gambling can enjoy their game, while every1 else can play as normal if the feature is optional by switching it off/on. If this is implemented then more ppl will 'try out' the game with minimal risk unlike now.The reason I say n exchange for not gambling if you choose this feature is because I think we should deter problem gambling while allowing every1 else to just play without the feature. I mainly want this to serve as a cooling off period if thing get hairy and I feel that this should be complementary to the bet limit we have now. I want this game to be enjoyable for all (from the n00bs and inexperienced players to the serious pro gamblers)

2.There should be a built in help feature in the players menu (like in windows) where they can read all about the games from a central interface as this will improve the user experience.
3.Add a features suggestion system to make it easier for players to suggest what they want to change in the game, add or remove things.

Can you tell me if:
The feature can be implemented?
The feature is viable to implement?
you have other comments about my suggestions so far.

Thank you

That is very good info Sgt spike

so GUIminer can be run without installing it 1st.

Can the bitcoin client be used the same?

I only do this solo on each machine because of router issues with the port forwarding at my end and at the workplace end (as they block certain ports normally used for p2p or 'bad' sites)

Thanx 4 the help tho.

How can I keep the wallets secure on a usb key?If I have this on 5 different ufds (1 runs on each of the 5 comps l8r in the experiment),can I combine the wallet files of these ufds into 1 to get a true representation of mining performance?

How do I setup my rpc server on my home Pc?
The PC spec is:
core i7 920 cpu 2.67ghz (3ghz OC'd)
6gb ram ddr3 type
3 hdds
win 7 64 bit

Wot tool do I use for setting up my own pool/server?so that I can direct those 10 rigs to mine onto that server.

I plan to use the new computer lab at workplace as their machinse r high spec (GPU above avg but still not as gd at my main pcs gpu) they have gd cpus but we both know that cpu mining in worthless now.

I only mentioned CPU due to the possibility of the work machines not having open cl installed or requiring admin rights to use the gpus that I just don't have as work tends to heavily lock down PCs outside hte new lab.

1258  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Request:I need USB portable versions of Bitcoin client and GUIminer on: June 21, 2011, 01:27:45 PM
Hi,
I need someone who has the expertise to help develop these for me:
1.A portable version of hte official Bitcoin client (For PC and Mac if possible)
2.A portable GUI miner app (as this uses the official bitcoin client for solo mining due to the router rules at home and in my workplace) (for PC and mac if possible)

I simply need them to be completely self contained so that I can keep all my files safe when used on a work machine and not leave traces behind for thieves to steal btc wallet contents.

I need this made for me as part of an experiment I need to carry out in the next 3 months.

The experiment:
1.Use 10 computer systems simultaneously at the same time while keeping my home pc running so that I can boost my mining performance whilst reducing power consumpton on my home PC.This will be done so see how fast 50BTc can be mined
2.The same as experiment 1 but with 4 computers including my home PC at maximum performance as opposed to 10 (with power savings options disabled)
3.The first set of experiments will be CPU only. The 2nd set will be GPU only. These 2 sets will be run twice before moving to the next experiment. (this part is removed as this only creates complications without benefitting anything)

Expected outcomes:
1.The person or people who developed the apps in question for me will get paid 5BTC (20BTC if successful) of the BTC mined as a result of this experiment (if successful).Don't give me ur BTC address until the experiment is finished please.
2.I will have more than quadrupled mining performance while using the experimental setup. This is my prediction.
3.I will have at least 250BTC at my disposal by the end of this experiment.

I'd like to hear what you think of:
1.The possibility of development of these portable apps (as I have no such skill in app dev)
2.The experiment itself.

Thank you

Thanx a lot Jack for hte helpful reply. I got some Questions about the Radeon HD 6950.

1.What kind of MHash/s can I expect from stock and OC'd from 6950 compared to 5850?

2.When mining solo (I have to because of router issues screwing up port forwarding atm) how much BTC can I expect with the 2 different cards? If I've missed nythin then lemme know

3.What kinda power use can I expect from the 2 cards in stock speeds and OC?I ask because where i am atm, elec is rather pricy (It's more than £0.14 in UK now,the part of UK i'm in anyway, more like £0.2 sumthin but i'm never sure cus BG are hiking prices again)

If you're really into the idea, why not just replace your video card in your current machine?
I don't know the economics if that would pay off for you, but it's certainly cheaper than building a dedicated rig, especially to run one card.

i think the original poster should just get a new GPU and new PSu if hte current PSU is inadequate. The last thing u want is 4 ur PSu to die on u n take everythin with it.If it's an Enermax or other high quality PSU,it should just shut off without damaging your hardware in hte event of overload or overheating

I hope this helps

P.S.I hear that if you have 2 Radeon HD 6950 GPU then get at least a 750W PSU cus you'll probably OC them to get the most mining power from those cards.
