you can tell a person has sunken into his gambling vices if he has already done crimes like that grandpa who kidnapped a kid for ransom. it's probably not his first, he must have stolen lots before this like jewelry or so. it can be hard for this old dog to stop gambling as he is addicted. even in prison, he will still gamble that's for sure.

Yes you are mate, we must gamble for fun only and not have the mindset that we can earn daily a big amount of money because in the world of gambling we can not predict the outcome of our every  bet. Sometimes we will win and sometimes we will loss. So it's better to aim happiness than profit. Here in in my country some gambler loss big amount of money because they are aiming profit.
