1381  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S Receiving Address on: December 26, 2020, 06:03:45 PM
I like to add... a long time ago... i kept btc in electrum.  Then when i got a nano ledger s later on... i moved all my coins from electrum to nano ledger s.  Then my nano ledger s stopped working... then i got a replacement and restored my seed on the new nano ledger s.

I recall when i first set up nano ledger s... it asked me if i wanted legacy or segwit.  I dont recall which one it was but im pretty certain it was segwit.  I think i choosed segwit as other people said its cheaper to send fees.  Is there a way to check this?  But that old nano ledger s didn't work anymore.

I think when i first set up electrum... it was default legacy?  Electrum is either legacy or segwit right?

What I can say is the last time i received btc when looking at my ledger live history transactions, first character was a number 3 and it shows bitcoin 1 (segwit)

But with this new nano ledger s i got not that long ago, i never sent/received yet.  Just restored it etc.

So I'm assuming the receiving address it showed in the ledger live and on my nano ledger s screen... is the btc receiving address i would put down if i receive some btc now?

The other thing is this.  I just googled native segwit and segwit and it seems more ppl say native segwit is better because of cheaper fees is that true?  So could i later on... go from segwit to native segwit?  Or would you not recommend it?

1382  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Nano Ledger S Receiving Address on: December 26, 2020, 05:49:34 PM
Hey all.  So i haven't used my nano ledger s for sending/receiving in a while.  I just want to confirm this before anything.

I have btc and btc cash in my nano ledger s wallet.  But i also did download bitcoin gold wallet as well but have no bitcoin gold.

When i want to receive btc... i go to receive on ledger live... then it gives me option of which to chose from... there are a few options...

bitcoin 1 native segwit   0 btc

bitcoin 1 segwit             x btc

bitcoin cash 1                x bitcoin cash

bitcoin gold 1                0 bitcoin gold

When i look at this, the only balances that shows is bitcoin 1 segwit and bitcoin cash 1 since i have only btc and bch.  Now I would then click on bitcoin 1 segwit and click next right?

When I do this, it gives me a long btc address that stars with the number 3.  Then you check it on nano ledger s to see if the address is correct... then you click approve right?  The thing is when i disconnected my nano ledger s and did this again to repeat this... it would show the same address that starts with the number 3.  Does that mean this is the default btc receiving address for my nano ledger s?

Can you all confirm this is my btc receiving address?   As you see i have segwit and native segwit... but im pretty certain i only use segwit right?

What are the best sites for it?  Is it the one the second poster posted?
1384  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: New Ledger phishing mail targets individual users on: December 10, 2020, 04:15:56 AM
I received this email as well but it went to my spam folder.  So most users thus received this email then?

So what happens if you click on the link on the email?  Is it malware/virus/keylogger?

Or does it ask you for your seed?

Encrypting it isn't good enough?
1386  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: $WAVES to hit $10 price soon? on: December 04, 2020, 03:50:38 AM
Why is it people in the waves thread talk abou it being a scam?
1387  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin will be used instead of paper money on: November 29, 2020, 03:47:07 AM
This is insane.  So people will paying with btc in their mobile wallets?  So wouldn't that mean nobody would carry that much coins in their phone then?
1388  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: how add security to our bitcoin ? on: November 29, 2020, 03:31:17 AM
Isn't coinbase and binance probably the best two exchanges if you want to keep coins there?
1389  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [POLL] 2020, your last chance of owning 1 BTC on: November 29, 2020, 03:30:50 AM
Does anyone here think getting a btc now makes it harder to make more money compared to alts?  I mean to double your money would need btc to hit double what it currently is.
1390  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Best Way to Store Your Nano Ledger S? on: November 28, 2020, 04:43:00 PM
Okay like to update this thread.  I put my nano ledger s in one of those containers HCP suggested and put the silica pack gel inside.  Now if i keep it there for a few weeks, then open it and use it and put it back in, do i need to replace the silica gel packs?  I put two of those gel packs.

Also... do i need to put that usb cable in the container as well?  If so, is it safe to put both the cable and the nano ledger s in the container with a few silica packs?  Or best to use a different container for each?
1391  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: New Ledger phishing mail targets individual users on: November 27, 2020, 06:09:31 AM
How many people here got that phishing email?  I checked my email and don't see it.  So it affect one percent of the nano ledger users database?

Also in an article it was said that this phishing lead to many users losing their crypto... especially ripple.  Can someone explain this?  So the phishing email tricked users into downloading a fake ledger live or was it some other program?  Then how did users lose their ripple then which i heard was the main coin that was lost here?  Am i assuming those users typed their ledger seed into the software?

Because since nano ledger is a hardware wallet, even if your computer is compromised as in virus/malware/keylogging, doesn't the seed as long as its not typed in the computer somewhere still safe?
1392  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Live Update on: November 27, 2020, 06:05:56 AM
OKay so everytime there is a new ledger live update, there is message of update available.  You click it and it downloads.  Then you click install.

Does anyone have the link to the actual date of every single ledger live update?  I know someone posted a link to every firmware update the nano ledger has had... and also the date of each update.

Okay so are you saying its not possible for the social engineering message that happened with electrum... to happen with ledger live?  Or its still possible?
1393  Economy / Exchanges / Localbitcoins on: November 22, 2020, 12:34:05 AM
Years ago, i know people said localbitcoin is great for selling/buying btc.  Is it still good now?

Also if you sell btc, isn't the best payment method going to be cash deposit in bank where the buyer deposit cash in the bank... then you release them the coins once the end of the banking days end?  Back then i heard a trick some scammers did was deposit cash at bank... send you receipt, then you send btc... then they go back to bank with receipt and said they made mistake depositing in wrong account and they get their money back.

How is it right now?
1394  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Take Profits in BTC or USDT on: November 22, 2020, 12:31:39 AM
Is there a reason why majority of altcoins cannot be traded with usd or usdt like btc, litecoin etc?  Why don't exchanges allow these to be paired then you have usd or usdt?  Because if you want to earn money in usd or usdt... well you need to pay another fee to go from btc to usd/usdt.

Can someone explain why?  Like if you trade btc, eth or litecoin or chainlink or bitcoin cash etc... you can trade it with usd or usdt.  But why not majority of those altcoins?
1395  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Ledger Live Update on: November 22, 2020, 12:25:51 AM
Quick question.  Whenever I log into ledger live and enter my password, many times, it would show a message of ledger live x version is available for update.  Many times i just click on download now.  Sometimes i delay it for a bit but eventually do it.

That is always safe right from when you open ledger live?  Thus no virus/malware could ever show up on this like compared to with electrum?

Current price of beancash now?  i check coinmarketcap but not sure if its accurate?  Which exchange do you use to buy/sell beancash now?
1397  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Cloud storage isn't safe place for your wallet keys on: November 15, 2020, 02:14:10 AM
Are you talking about storing your keys/seed via google drive or dropbox and just typing the seed there or putting a wordpad document on it?

Or do you mean... writing it down on notepad or say type it in a program like lastpass/keypass and make sure it has a password on it?  Obviously this one is more second because if email get hacked... hacker stilll needs your password to your notepad document if you encrypt it or need your password for lastpass/keypass right?
1398  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Best Place To Store Your Seed? on: October 25, 2020, 11:42:34 PM
Okay so in other words, unless they know for sure that person has a lot of hidden coins in their wallet, it wouldn't be even worth the money to then try to find out right?  I mean imagine they got the correct seed... and it shows say 0.8 btc... but they think there is more in a hidden wallet... but unless they are damn sure... it could even cost them money since now they could pay like a thousand dollars... then find out there is no btc in the hidden wallet right?

Well if renting is 5/hr... a day is 120.  Oh wait... then 241 days... would mean they would have to spend over 30,000 USD then right?  Thus it wouldn't be worth it unless they are hundred percent sure about this?  I had no idea about the equipment whether buying or renting.

1399  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: 25th Word in Nano Ledger S on: October 25, 2020, 11:35:03 PM
So everytime you connect ledger s to laptop, you need to enter one of these two pins, to access either the smaller or bigger balance btc right?  Thus no more passphrase seeded to type each type?  But you need the passphrase when you try to access your coins in a new ledger right when you enter the whole 24 word seed and also 25th Word?
This is essentially correct. The passphrase is intrinsically linked to the addresses you generate, just the same as your seed phrase. You need both to recover the coins in the passphrased wallet. If you lose either the seed phrase or the passphrase, you cannot recover the passphrased wallet.

The PIN is entirely stored on the Ledger and is device specific. The PIN is not used to generate your wallets, only to unlock your Ledger device. If you recover the wallets to a different Ledger device, you do not need to enter your previous PINs, and when you set up new PINs you can either pick the same ones as before or totally different ones.

Okay but don't you find it a bit not good that you can't enter your seed and also the 25th Word to the recovery app to confirm everything is correct?  That seems to be one thing I'm not a fan of.

Also, anyone that creates this wallet, they then sent the majority of the coins from their main wallet to the new hidden wallet right?  Like what I posted in the bolded part?  Thus with say 2btc balance, u send the say 90 percent of your 2 btc in the nano ledger s... so 1.8 btc from the original address to the new address right?  Now you have 0.2 btc in your main wallet and 1.8 btc in the hidden wallet?

But if someone got your 24 word seed and 25th Word, they have access to both main wallet and hidden wallet right?  Since if the are restoring the entire seed with that 25th Word, the 2nd pin is not needed for them?
1400  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: 25th Word in Nano Ledger S on: October 25, 2020, 05:34:48 PM
Also do others here using the 25th Word ?  I gotta assume like less than 20 percent of ppl probably use it ... many don't even know about it right?

Your assumption makes no sense because it is completely impossible to know how many HW users know about this feature, and how many of them would even decide to use this option. Manufacturers definitely do not recommend this feature for people who are not fully aware of what it is actually about, all for the reason of preventing users from locking their funds irretrievably.

There have already been cases where users have used this option and forgotten passphrases, so no matter they have a perfectly correct seed, they actually have one big nothing. I doubt that the OP will be a little closer to understanding even after a hundred pages of explanations - he asked the same questions more than a year ago.

Did you have to do this when you initialize the nano ledger s or you could do this anytime afterwards?  Example i set up my nano ledger s a while back and wrote down the 24 word seed.
Can i add a 25th word now?   Could i do this without having access to my 24 word seed?  My 24 word seed is in another location, not here so i don't have access to it.

Well i heard of this 25th Word  a while back but I never attempted it because I didn't even think about it at the time... but most importantly that seems like another step in the process which I sort of what to avoid.

You say there has been users who used this option and forgotten the passphrases.  Yea that will definitely happen.  The thing is i would also write the passphrase down as well as backup... and put it a bit somewhere else from the 24 word seed.  But my concern is setting the 25th Word process.  I mean you type it, then make sure you remember and write it down on paper.

But when you then try to type in your seed again if something happens to your ledger... say it reset or you need to get a new one... you would then need to type the 24 word seed... and then the  2nd pin you created?  Or the 24 word seed, then the passphrase and then the 2nd pin?

Also no matter which of the teo methods you choose... HCP recommend the pin option... when you set up the second pin, well you need to then move the bulk of your coins to the 2nd pin right?  Thus imagine you set this all up and had 2 btc in your nano ledger s.  You set passphrase, then second pin... say its 888888 as your second pin.  Say your original pin was 555555.

Then you send the say 90 percent of your btc in the nano ledger s... so 1.8 btc from the original address to the new address right?

Then you have 0.2 btc in your current address with pin 555555
Then you have 1.8 btc in your second address with pin 888888

So everytime you connect ledger s to laptop, you need to enter one of these two pins, to access either the smaller or bigger balance btc right?  Thus no more passphrase seeded to type each type?  But you need the passphrase when you try to access your coins in a new ledger right when you enter the whole 24 word seed and also 25th Word?  And once you do that... you enter either of the pins to access either the smaller or bigger wallet?

Is that correct?
