141  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Hacking KNC Titan / Jupiter / Neptune miners back to life. Why not? on: December 03, 2021, 11:15:38 PM
December 2021 and I'm still mining LTC with a string of 5 titan cubes. One of the cubes blew out and I haven't fixed it yet so I am down to 300mh of hashing. And given the silliness of Dogecoin, I'm still mining at a profit.

Insane little things.
142  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Hacking KNC Titan / Jupiter / Neptune miners back to life. Why not? on: December 03, 2021, 11:14:27 PM
The Neptune requires the KNC controller board to operate. Reason being all of the polling logic and such was done by a FPGA that was located on this board, along with a Beaglebone Black to run stuff like general housekeeping and the BFG mining softeware.

If you have one of these boards, you should be good to try. If you just have the cube you need a controller board (which supports up to 5 or 6 cubes depending if you want the little display on the board).

A Neptune and controller can run fine on a 600 watt supply. But the Neptune is not going to be efficient by any stretch of the imagination.

I have been so puzzled by Jack because the whole corporate "censorship" aspect we have seen over the last few years has been very prominent on Twitter where an entire set of people have been ERASED there including a sitting (and now past) US president.  Where one particular worldview is exalted, and another declared to be "Nazi" or "fascist" or "white supremacist" And shut down.

They were "censored" as soon as they stopped making oodles of money for the company. The twitter/facebook/google TOS is a complete joke, what it should say is "you can do anything you want as long as we make lots of money on it".

Such is life.

You had to jinx it didn't you.

Bitcoin do what it do

Furnace fried, grim cold.
Electricians hard to find.
Cold, despair, hopeless.

Raynaud hands type "help"
to Wall Observer brethren.
Solace found at last.

Those days are past now.
Domestic bliss, warmth, comfort
Candles, history.

A warm house is great
Yet not nearly as great as
watching bitcoin pump.

Wind, power cuts, dark.
Wax candles, the only light
When autumn storms hit.

Such times always pass.
Watching other candles now:
The big, fat green type.

You fixed it! WIN!!!!

Hey bitcoin just crossed 58k. Look at that.

Are there any good thanksgiving movies you guys can recommend?

Home for the holidays. Traumatic.

147  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Eligius: 0% Fee BTC, 105% PPS NMC, No registration, CPPSRB on: November 25, 2021, 04:02:24 AM
Look around for your wallet.dat files and whatnot. Yes that was it, the wallet address was your username but you generated that address yourself from your wallet addy.

I recently found a bitpenny in an old wallet, gotta check some others. It's like finding coins in your sofa, except they are $600 coins :-)
148  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Eligius: 0% Fee BTC, 105% PPS NMC, No registration, CPPSRB on: November 24, 2021, 08:15:59 PM
The only thing I think Eligius stored was the concept of "shelved shares" which were banked during bad block runs and paid from on good block runs. Since it's gone, those shares are null. But they were never actual bitcoins.

Check around for the keys to the wallet you have eligius paying to. Your coins should be there if anywhere.

Now, PPS systems like Eclipse did vanish with people's bitcoins, I think I lost a bitpenny or two when that went bye bye. Annoying, they could have just paid out final balances to the wallet on record but no.....

It's actually an electric furnace which heats water supplied to wet radiators (with hot water coming from a completely different electric immersion heater) - there is no gas in my rural location. It was installed many years before I bought the house and there seem to be hardly any of them around. I think it probably dates back to the early 1990s. There has been some kind of electrical overloading which has fried at least one, maybe all three, of the internal relays. There's also no guarantee that the element itself hasn't gone too. The manufacturer no longer exists and a search online for known spare part numbers has proved fruitless. So I could spend ages trying to source spare parts; and/or pay 100s for a call-out and repair fee with no guarantee of success; or buy an equivalent modern replacement furnace.

Ah ok, oil retrofit. Electric immersion is pretty simple, the big problem is it's rather inefficient. I wonder if there is a heat pump solution as the loop water only needs to be heated to 120 degrees or so.

Depending on your outside climate (is it cold for just a few days a year or not) and your house power (12kw boiler is 60a so you need at least a 200a service) it might be reasonable. If you own the house and plan to stay awhile I'd say really check out a geothermal solution as those are much more efficient than an air-water heat pump.

Regardless glad you found a short term solution. Sounds like it needs a plumber for the water connections, then an electrician for the wiring work :-)

That's bad news for sure.  This happened to us a while ago in the middle of winter but we also have a gas stove so we kept a couple burners going to warm up in the kitchen/living room, purchased a couple of electric blankets to help in the bedroom and thermal underwear and toques were a godsend.

This is why one of the first things I got in the house was a fireplace insert. The only electricity needed is for two muffin type fans and I can run those on battery power for a week if needed. It's saved my bacon twice and really supplements the main heat system when it's cold and the price of gas is stupid.

edit:   Hey!  Don't you have a pile of old bitcoin miners lying around?

Another valid option. BFL Monarchs make excellent room heaters as they are water cooled and extremely quiet.
151  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 24, 2021, 03:05:40 AM
Returning home after a period of travel, to find my central heating furnace has died. To summarize a very long (and doubtless boring) story, my furnace is of a very specific type and no local tradesmen are interested in either trying to repair it (which I think is unlikely, since it's 30 years old) or replace it.

So I'm on Day 5 of zero heating and it's 1C outside. Brrrrrr. I made a trip to collect some portable heaters which are currently being rotated around various rooms in the house, which is helping.  But there's no end in sight to this situation. I've fired off several late night emails to various suppliers and contractors in the hope that at least one of them will reply favourably by morning.

I keep checking the Bitcoin price to try to find some positivity in an otherwise cold and cheerless house. In that regard, today is looking a little more optimistic than recent days.

Thought I'd share my tale of woe here in search of some WO brotherly love. I need a (virtual) group hug  Undecided

Weird, what's wrong with it? If it's gas and the basso valve has failed they can be plumbed around with a new electronic basso wired in. Had that done on my 50 year old furnace, works fine.

If it's oil, and the line outside is not insulated then insulate it with a nice heater wire next to it and the oil will not freeze up/turn to goo. Dealt with that one with a friend as well.

This stuff ain't rocket science.

Ok, it's time for the pep talk.

OT: I live in an America where, at the American Music Awards, a band that is not even remotely American wins artist of the year.

What a sad fkn joke this country has become.  Roll Eyes

I have to agree: Only Native American Indian music should ever be allowed on a show like this.

I've published several articles in various prestigious scientific journals, the last one was in 2020. I never had to pay a cent! The only limit was the size of the article. If it exceeded a certain number of pages (I think the limit was about 10 pages of two-column format), then I would have to pay for the extra pages.

2000 € / review is outrageous!

Ok, it might be their "open access" journals to compete with PLoS. I think it was Science Advances or something like that and Nature was doing one too. If open access then yeah you have to pay but I believe the overall quality suffers (like PLoS)

Arxiv is great, Perelman published his proof of the Poincaré Conjecture there. Free, and serves its purpose just fine.

As we say, the odds are good, but the goods are odd.
155  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 20, 2021, 04:50:02 AM
Yes, indeed, now is as it switched to OA, but it used to be much less, but it is paid from grants anyway, not from the own pocket. But the true new outrage is the review charge (~2K euro). Now, I mostly teach (don't want to write grants anymore), but when i published there last, there was no charge for review...it is quite ridiculous.
Arxiv is great (and very popular) for physics, much less so for Biology.

Holy goat fucking, I have been out of the business for awhile. The whole point was subscriptions (esp library subs) covered the cost of paper review, only the Open Access journals were charging review and publish fees. Didn't realize Nature and Science were doing it.

Times change. But as they say all God's creatures have to EAT.

We've had vaccinations for more than two centuries. The issue is not with the 'vaccine' itself. Indeed, many of those having issues with what is going on are vaccinated themselves. So yes, strawman as independently called out by someone else too.

I've stopped on this one. No more Nazis in this thread.

Hey, bitcoin seems to be back. Wonder when it will pass 120k.
159  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 19, 2021, 10:41:45 PM
There is a separate thread for this.

Plus there are Hitler sources on the web if you need to get a real feel about the nature of the Nazis.

There is, and I'm dropping into that hole again. Discussion closed for now.

So when MOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also: about peer reviewed papers - make sure you check who it was that reviewed the paper and where it was published. I could send in a paper which states human shit cures cancer to an "institute" in India and get it published in some BS "science journal" with 50 peer reviews from some indian scientists nobody has ever heard of and probably don't even exist or who do exist and only care about making money.

I would only have to pay a few thousand dollars.

Best way to deal with this is to look up the journal's "Impact Factor". This shows how many times papers have been cited in other journals and their resultant quality.

IF >20=Science, Nature, JAMA
IF <2=Indian Times, DUH, etc.
