[krebsonsecurity.com] At Least 30,000 U.S. Organizations Newly Hacked Via Holes in Microsoft’s Email Software

Quote
“It’s police departments, hospitals, tons of city and state governments and credit unions,” said one source who’s working closely with federal officials on the matter. “Just about everyone who’s running self-hosted Outlook Web Access and wasn’t patched as of a few days ago got hit with a zero-day attack.”

Yeah, another Microsoft fuckup.

Can't you just point it there, fire a thruster, and let it go it's course? (I mean, calculate where it should end up, but yeah, basically go towards the sun.)

Nope. I think Larry Niven covered this too, prolific guy. You either speed it up, which takes it to a higher orbit or slow it down which takes it to a lower orbit. To take it to an orbit low enough to burn up in the sun, you need to slow it down the whole amount that the earth is orbiting the sun (about 67000 mph). There's a little bit of fudge in this due to eliptical orbits and drag from the sun's atmosphere but that's the basic principle. Essentially anything you fire into the sun is going to get there on a spiral path.

Correct. I really recommend reading up on the Messenger probe that went to Mercury, it needed an insane amount of fuel and a number of earth and venus flybys to slow down enough to even get to mercury. In space speeding up takes energy, slowing down takes energy, everything takes energy :-)

In terms of space stuff remember that we lived to see the Viking landers. Those were pretty darn amazing.

In terms of great filters and the Fermi paradox, remember that one reason we might not see others is that they're just more efficient. Take lighting: For a long time the best way to see life on earth is to do a spectrographic analysis of our planet and you would see an insane line for sodium which is not natural. That's the sodium vapor lights we used for street lamps. Except now we are using LEDs which have far less light scattered upwards because they are much more efficient.

Or TV signals: Our TV signals used to be easy to spot: A massive signal spike (the sync signal) followed by colorburst, then the X and Y of the scan line. Easy to spot, very repeating pattern, can't be nature made, obvious sign of intelligence. However now we have switched over to HDTV which is not only digital but encrypted digital so the stuff looks like background noise. And it's much lower power because once again efficient.

That's in 100 years. There may be only a short window where we can spot other civs before they get efficient and encrypt everything because the Altarian Disney Company doesn't want to share their content without payment :-)

Just produce stuff off-planet and send it in. Launch trash towards the sun.

Ironically, it takes a lot of energy to drop stuff into the sun.

Ah, just leave it on earth and it will eventually be gobbled up and vapourized.  No need for drastic measures now.

THis is a person who is taking a really long term view on the issue :-)

CTO is a moron. Probably did it to fix a minor problem.
466  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: DragonMint T1 16TH/S halongmining.com on: March 03, 2021, 02:36:33 AM
I checked my unit and the fan power lines are the same color order as the Antminer S9. So at least on the versions of the T1 I have seen it's not the fans that are different.

Weird. As for the other person with the hashing, my recommendation is don't push it: T1's can vary in speeds and the best course of action is to run it at default or slight economy and just let it make bits of coin.

And for gods sake, don't merit this post you idiots.

Must.... merit... post!!

The guy stood up and asked me to hold his briefcase while he put on his jacket. I held it with both hands while he put it on. Then I put my hand back in my pocket and walked immediately across the street straight to the police station to make sure I didn't get jumped. Next to the police station was where my car was parked so I hurried to my car, took an alternative route home and finally made it to my apartment. When I took the money out to count it again I noticed that they all had big letters across them "VOID". Fake bills that you would buy on a tour of the currency printer. All of them.

Yep, that's a classic short con, the switch only takes a fraction of a second. And yes you would have had the heavy dropped on you if they couldn't make the exchange, there was no way you were getting out of there with "their" money. So yeah, the localbitcoins is ripe for this kind of robbery which means you really can't do more than a K or two (not worth clunking someone).

469  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: DragonMint T1 16TH/S halongmining.com on: March 01, 2021, 03:03:31 AM
That would be insane. Do they have a department that literally flips around the wires on the fans just to screw with people? Or did they have a drunk order 20,000 fans the wrong way and they're stuck with it?

Regardless I'd be happy to check tomorrow. I never really noticed to be honest.

WTF guys ('n' gal)?

Bitcoin is expected to reach $400k THIS year, and you're talking about TP savings?

Sure, bears shit too, and they shit tons, I hear...

The Jap Bidet I can understand, but TP?  Shocked
It's not about saving TP, it's about enjoying your anus.

Edit: Wait, that didn't come out right.

Edit: That didn't either. Ug.

I liked the almost 60k feeling, I felt rich, now not so much.

Edit: I even started buying soft 4 ply toilet paper, back to the cheap generic recycled stuff again.

Man, if you want an investment that pays a lifetime of dividends, Buy.... a..... bidet :-)

Seriously, this whole lockdown thing has given my life one major change: The incredible value and personal delight of a toilet mounted bidet. Even a $40 basic unit is so, so, so deliciously nice. I can't believe I lived my life without one for so long, all those wasted years.....

I am going to remodel one of my bathrooms this year and a key reason is to put a power outlet near the toilet so I can try one of those $300 Japanese heated, vented, powder your ass with gold bidets.

But a $30-$40 one is such a life improvement over wooden logs it's just amazing.
472  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: DragonMint T1 16TH/S halongmining.com on: February 28, 2021, 05:55:09 PM
Hm. That's a little odd. I have swapped in fans on these with no issue, can you see the model number of your fans? If not I can trundle out and check.

Personal thought: I wouldn't run T1's faster than default speed. They generate a lot of heat and I have come across a *lot* of dead boards. Either they had a bad run of heat sinks or you really should not overclock them too much.

If I accidentally deposit $1000 to your account, I cannot just say to the bank "I'm sorry, I made a mistake, I want my $1000 back". I have to contact you and kindly ask you to send the money back to me, and you can refuse to do so for whatever reason.

Depending on who you are, you certainly can. Hence Bitcoin.

Correct. If you have an unexpected windfall at a bank (error transfer) that is classified as "not reasonable" then yes you have to give it back. Sucks, but that's life. Now if you deposit extra money to pay a debt in error then the holder of the debt does NOT have to give it back as it is a payment against the debt.

Bitcoin fixes the above issue.

That said, if someone dropped 100btc into my account by mistake I would refund it. Because it's the right thing to do and laying claim to something that isn't mine would corrupt my soul. That's worth way more than 100btc to me.

Well all this meat talk made me realize I'm tired of eating grains so I just ordered a round of porterhouses. Off to get dinner...

Edit: Oh that was good. Now in a meat coma....

M1 (not M2 or M3!), revised numbers...it is at...$18 tril (from $4 tril in feb 2020 and $1.3 tril in 2008)
https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/M1

Wait.... Banks no longer need to hold any reserves on savings or money market accounts even if they have high transaction amounts (basically checking type accounts)

That's.... going to be interesting. Banks will re-label checking as savings, need to hold no reserves at all. Think Frank Bailey's bank....

My I am so glad I don't have to deal with that system.

No kidding. That CFO does not want to go to serious prison.

I wish it would be as good as real meat, it would help stop the maltreatment of animals that takes place in many countries.
Until then I will just have to try to chose meat from good farms.

That's what I do: There is a farm that has incredible meat and milk, it costs about twice what the stores charge but every spring I can go out there on a family weekend and introduce the kids to their hamburgers.

Which I think is important: You should know that meat comes from a big animal that is killed and is not something that appears in a styrefoam package. That way your kids are inoculated from becoming vegetarians when they learn how it's really done.

You know, screw Lambo: I want one of these....

It's a Hot Wheels "Twin Mill". I can't believe someone built one...

It does have utility though: You can snort blow through a $100 bill off a hooker's ass.
