Well, technically if you're long on BTC, and since we don't have a crystal ball vis-à-vis BTC long term value, yes, you could. But using mining calculators to figure out short term ROI? Not really.

If we see another Cyprus-like event in the next year, all bets are off and miners will be unloading stored BTC like crazy to meet & beat ROI.
1422  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTB, Used BFL Jalapenos: $500 for 5GH, $700 for 7GH. 48 Hours, To be ESCROWED] on: August 13, 2013, 10:46:06 PM
Believe it or not, I've had some success elsewhere. Just need to know where to look.  Grin

It'll get down to these prices here shortly. Just ahead of the curve.

Moore's Law seems to apply to ASICs as well, since they're just another IC.
1423  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTB, Used BFL Jalapenos: $500 for 5GH, $700 for 7GH. 48 Hours, To be ESCROWED] on: August 13, 2013, 08:31:07 PM
Ready to unload your used BFL Jalapeno(s)? I'll buy them from you before they turn into paperweights, so you can spend it on something else or re-invest the funds in new hardware.

The new going rate is 13GH/s for $1K (new, Gen1 ASICminer Blades). This offer actually values your used Jalapenos at a higher dollar per GH value than the new AM Blade offering: $1K for BFL 10GH/s vs. $1K for AM 13GH/s.

I'll pay in PP or BTC. I'll also pay for BTC Escrow protection via John K. or BTCrow (your choice) before any BTC funds are transferred or item(s) shipped. Please PM me if interested!

This open offer ends in 48 hours.
1424  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [OPEN] batch #20/21 .31 - .35 btc for USB miners & 10.25 blades - USA only on: August 13, 2013, 08:11:53 PM
Grrr... just made a hair enough, but says it needs 0.0002 BTC for transaction fees.  I wasn't aware of that!

Still need to learn more about BTC.

i hope I did the rest okay.  I am waiting to mine the last .0002 BTC.  In reality, it'd be .001 BTC since that's the minimum I can do a payout.

You know you're complaining about the equivalent of about .2 cents.  Grin

But, yeah, I know what you mean: did the same mistake my first time, not knowing about transaction fees.
1425  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Aug. 2013 ASIC Miner Survey: How are you approaching this gold rush? on: August 13, 2013, 07:56:15 PM
I'm mining on hardware pre-ordered many months ago, but I also have more pre-orders coming.

So I presume you voted for the 2nd category. How's your ROI looking on the hardware you've received so far?
1426  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Aug. 2013 ASIC Miner Survey: How are you approaching this gold rush? on: August 13, 2013, 06:42:53 PM
No kidding! How about a nice game of chess, indeed!

Some interesting preliminary observations from just about a day's worth of voting (as of 10AM HST):

- About 2/3rds of forum members voting have pre-orders pending; to be expected in an ASIC user/buyers forum.

- About 20% BTC mine in some fashion, but have no ASIC pre-orders pending

- 6% are primarily invested in ASIC mining shares/mfgs/and or pools (may be skewed lower because I invited the mining speculators to the poll late)

- 5% are waiting for ASIC prices to come down

And some people just want to watch the world (or at least this microcosm) burn.  Cheesy
1427  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Butterfly labs did everything they could to make getting a refund impossible. on: August 13, 2013, 04:05:28 AM
Whew! Good thing I bought a pre-order in early July on that via PP. Man, to have to deal with BFL *&* PP? Blech.

90 days to do a chargeback or longer then that with Amex? Can't recall.
1428  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Smart machine 40nm on: August 13, 2013, 03:07:46 AM
just show me a screen shot where I send you all my money please..

I'm throwing cash at the monitor, but it doesn't appear to be accepting any of the bills...  Sad

 Cheesy  Cheesy  Cheesy

No, no, no. You're doing it all wrong. No wonder it's not working. Are you the kind of guy that wipes sideways or something?

You have to use BTC & you deposit it in the wallet listed in my signature. If you act now, you get the 2nd one for free! Heck, since I'm feeling so generous, I'll even throw in Free Shipping!  Wink  Cheesy
1429  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / If you're primarily invested in ASIC mining shares and/or pools, please vote on: August 13, 2013, 02:32:27 AM
I like having balanced voting/conversations. We're having a little ASIC miner poll on the Custom Hardware forum if you guys want to chime in:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=272565.0

Even if you don't mine or plan too, there's an option for those primarily invested in various ASIC mining shares and/or pools. Thanks!

Disclaimer: I own 1.14 AM shares, resell miners when prudent, & have pre-orders still "processing". Just an amateur historian happy to be on the frontlines of yet another tech revolution.
1430  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Aug. 2013 ASIC Miner Survey: How are you approaching this gold rush? on: August 13, 2013, 02:26:28 AM
Should've thought of this earlier, I'm adding a category for those investing in mining shares and/or mining pools. Sorry! I'm not prefect.

I suppose I'll let the speculators forum know, since this is right up their alley.

Disclaimer: Very minor ASICminer shareholder. Wish I had more TBH.
1431  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / ASIC Miners Poll in other thread, Giving GPU/FPGA miners a chance to balance out on: August 13, 2013, 12:23:13 AM
...the voting on the Custom Hardware ASIC-user heavy thread. I believe that all polls and votes in any matter should have opposing arguments or disparate elements for the sake of balance.

Feel free to vote if you're not currently an ASIC miner or pre-order customer at:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=272565.0

I believe that many of you would fall in the: "I mine, but no-preorders ATM" or the "Y'all crazy" categories when it comes to ASIC miners.
1432  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Aug. 2013 ASIC Miner Survey: How are you approaching this gold rush? on: August 12, 2013, 11:56:23 PM
Ha! Me too! I fall in that category although my hashrate is very, very minor ATM. Lot's on pre-orders but you know how it goes for us folks late to the party.

I am one of the few lucky noobs that have already met ROI so far thanks to arbitrage opportunities even with expensive early mistakes. Had to work for it though, didn't just fall into my lap. Some people are willing to speculate that BTC will appreciate tremendously in the long run & are willing to pay a premium to get in-hand or earlier pre-orders.

I'm a victim of coicumstance! I live in a capitalist society, one I wish was a bit more compassionate, but I digress, so who am I to stop someone from using their free will & speculating or using excess cash if they want to get the latest tech? I've been buying & re-selling new/used electronics like giant CRTs and pre-order Wii's when many of these whippersnappers were still in school. Point of fact: I was learning to program in BASIC on a C-64 when many of these young lads were still swimming in Pop's huevos.

Arbitrage. It's a neat word. Mah word of the day. Young 'uns could do well if they play their cards right if they remember the shovel makers and suppliers make the best ROI in a gold rush.
1433  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Aug. 2013 ASIC Miner Survey: How are you approaching this gold rush? on: August 12, 2013, 11:36:57 PM
Good for you! If this place had a toast icon I'd send you one.

You took a risk on an unknown commodity that very few knew about at the time, and took a leap of faith and were rewarded for taking that risk. Care to mention where you might fall on the mining spectrum?

Besides being lucky?  Grin
1434  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Aug. 2013 ASIC Miner Survey: How are you approaching this gold rush? on: August 12, 2013, 11:09:13 PM
Yeah, you might be the rare critter that was a miner, a temp. reseller, and are now just watching. But thanks for the input! Any input we give the mfgs. that helps the case for downward pressure is helpful IMO for us miners and would-be miners. The fact that you had an ASIC miner and no longer operate one with no current pre-orders is telling in itself, at least in your case. You also sound like you're in the: "not my first time to the rodeo" category.

If someone else sees that they don't fit into any of these categories - if enough people mention it - I'll add another category.

Edit: Added the "wary buyer with cash/BTC just waiting for the right opportunity & Bob Barker to tell 'em to 'Come on down!' category." In his honor, I'll call it: bbxx's Rodeo Category.  Smiley
1435  Bitcoin / Hardware / Aug. 2013 ASIC Miner Survey: How are you approaching this gold rush? on: August 12, 2013, 10:54:23 PM
You have to vote to see the results.  Grin

Why is this survey useful? Well, if we show the manufacturers that there doesn't seem to be much more demand for ASIC pre-orders at current prices circa mid. August...

I'll leave it at that.  Wink

Also, feel free to let manufacturers know in this poll's comments how you feel about pre-ordering, in general. I, for one, feel that many have abused the open, trusting nature of crowdfunding ala Kickstarter and the trust of their customers.

You only get one vote. So choose wisely Daniel-san! And go wash the car, Carl, it'll teach you karate or something. [Phineas & Ferb ref.]

Remember that old 90's song: "Thong, th-th-thong, thong, thong."

It's like that except it's: "Spam, Sp-sp-spam, spam, spam."

Please excuse me for asking this here but I want the recommendations of those that are actually mining, buying mining equipment.

I need BTC, lots of them, so I can make BE buys with Canary.  Problem is this will be my first BTC buy ever so I want to deal with the very best among, to my knowledge, not many very good choices.
How hard can it be to find a relatively, in crypto-currency terms, established, reliable party to accept my cash or cash equivalents and convert them to BTC in a reasonable amount of time?

If you were going to buy BTC, where would you buy them?  Coinbase, Camp BX, ??

Thanks for your input.
setup coinbase and wait 30 days for verification.  in the mean time, I have a blip about another service on my OP too.

You forgot to mention BTC Quick that you mentioned in your original post. You can buy up to $250 worth of BTC a day there if you get verified, which can be done in less than one day. Fees are 7.5% for beginners.

Coinbase takes a week for BTC to arrive until you're verified. Fees are 1%.
1438  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: laughted at me when I said ASIC companies are manipulating you on: August 11, 2013, 09:30:57 PM
I'm new to ASIC BTC mining but thanks to arbitrage, and even with a couple of rookie moves, and even w/ most of my ordered equipment still "processing", in a little over a month from my first purchase, I already made ROI!  Grin

It may be outside the bell curve but it happened for me after I did some research & made some acquisitions. Some people are just willing to take more risks but I accept the risks & am now in a position to buy a couple of Blades with house money that *will* ship in late Aug. or early Sept. or whatever dark horse appears in the next week or so.

I may re-sell them but at least I'll have hardware in-hand relatively efficiently hashing away at the rate of 20-40 GPUs.

Disclaimer: AM shareholder because in a gold rush, shovel makers & their concomitant suppliers (hello, Levis jeans!) are the ones that reliably make ROI. Plus, I feel like investing in a mining pool helps protect against hardware depreciation and inevitable hashing power loss thru 25% automatic hardware reinvestment.
1439  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Think he's regretting ~$4K on a 13GH/s Blade last month? Ex. of changing prices on: August 10, 2013, 10:41:03 PM

Some schadenfrude for those of you suffering from BFL or Avalon pre-order overload, I suppose. I think this is a good sign that the hardware drought is ending, as Gen 2 AM chips must be inbound. I think it's a good sign that we've broken the $100 per GH/s mark on stock that's available & shipping in late. Aug.-Sept. as you can find group buys of these same miners for $1.3K now (which appears to be better than 25GH/s for the same cost from BF in October (although BF boards are upgradeable)).

Disclaimer: I now own 1.14 AM shares but own no AM hardware or have any on order ATM.
1440  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Not worth mining any longer for anyone not already in. Am I wrong? on: August 10, 2013, 09:42:56 AM
Something to consider about BTC earned via dividends or mined versus earning an income that's immediately taxed.

- Let's say you spent $100 on the latest e-doodad at the Nile e-superstore. To have spent that $100, unless you're Mitt Romney or in his type of position, you're getting taxed at anywhere from 25-40% if you're like most people. So to have purchased that $100 worth of electronics you had to have labored to earn $125-140 depending on your tax situation.

- Now say you mined a Bitcoin or got paid in BTC dividends. Who knows how long it took but you have a Bitcoin. If you were to purchase something with that coin, currently valued at about a $100, you've essentially purchased something that would have really cost you $125-140 pre-tax.

Of course, purchasing something with that coin has an intrinsic opportunity cost that offsets the tax advantages: you've decided that whatever you've decided to purchase with that BTC at that moment is worth more than that particular BTC's future value - regardless of one's position on the viability of the longevity of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.

This logic would work, if bitcoin wasn't taxable. Theoretically it IS taxable income the moment you convert it to USD.   For now, you most certainly can pay for goods and avoid income taxes with the coins you earned but it would be foolish to assume this is "tax free income".

Today there was a court ruling that Bitcoin denominated investments were in fact securities and would be treated as such.  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=269612.new#new

This means that those bitcoin dividends you are talking about spending, those are coming from a security in bitcoins.  That security in bitcoins now needs to obey SEC rules and regulations. The exchange offering those BTC securities also needs to obey rules and regulations.

The implication here is that dividends, are 1099-DIV income.  If you are being paid dividends that's taxable income.  It may not be today, but it could definitely be backdated and reported to the IRS if companies like ASICMiner are now required to comply with regulations....

Buyer Beware.

Sorry for the late reply to this quote but, what's wrong with filing 1099s? Done it before & I don't mind paying taxes. I don't look at mining & mining speculation as a way to *hide* money from the Feds (but I do see it as a way to maintain & build wealth, like other securities). I, for one, do like having lights that work, streets that are paved, etc., etc.. due to taxes paid by citizens. Not saying we should grab everyone's wealth & re-distribute it, but we all have to and should pay our fair share of our local, state, and fed. taxes. It's one of the things we miners & investors have to do to make BTC really take off & be legit.

I've seen documentaries of places where true anarchy rules, like Somalia. It's not pretty.
