1501  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How did Mr. Satoshi Nakamoto get inspiration about developing Bitcoins? on: April 09, 2020, 08:13:49 PM
Wasn't Bitcoin also highly influenced by hash cash? I could have sworn I have read that time and time over.

Satoshi's innovation was to combine several existing technologies and turn them into one system. As far as I know they were all around in one form or the other and had been for quite some time. And of course digital money had been around for years too, it was the centralisation they could never get past.

If I remember rightly hashcash was invented as some sort of anti spam measure. What's double weird is that its inventor didn't seem very moved by Bitcoin and only warmed up to it in 2013.
1502  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Halving Price Prediction $55,000 - $130,000 on: April 09, 2020, 07:50:09 PM
The global economic crisis caused by the pandemic sets everything back a bit I think, because when people have less money to spend that means less money goes into bitcoin.

Imagine proposing the situation we've ended up in now when this thread was started in November. You'd be accused of being a pisspoor slash fiction hack.

We're either well and truly on the precipice of something cataclysmic or we're going to be dragged back from the edge and spurt some major relief all over the place. I am impressed at how well BTC's price has held up but I also think we're in a bit of a disbelief stage still.  I wouldn't want to make any calls about anything at present.

1503  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Legacy vs segwit on: April 09, 2020, 07:43:36 PM
Agree. Even so, it is better to use a Segwit address in almost every situation.

I don't have funds in Legacy addresses anymore.

The only downside of segwit addresses is that they do not allow to sign messages. Only Electrum does, and its signature is not recognized by Bitcoin Core.

I've stayed with legacy addresses for my main funds because you never know when an airdrop or shitfork may strike. There were plenty that couldn't work with Segwit private or required signatures. And you never know, coins on quaint olde worlde addresses may become highly sought after by hipsters. We're moving into a weird future.
1504  Economy / Speculation / Re: Historical performance of #BITCOIN on: April 09, 2020, 07:36:18 PM
first of all bitcoin has been around for 11 years and you can't just pick some arbitrary time in the past (6.6 year ago?) and call that "first price".

Presumably that was when the first EUR market opened up. Maybe it was Kraken? Not sure who the first one was. It's strange that after all this time and it being the currency of one of the world's richest areas it's still 100% the dollar's bitch when it comes to BTC.

The yearly lows are a much more telling figure to me at least.
1505  Other / Meta / Re: + 2000 Activity & + 2000 Merit on: April 09, 2020, 09:32:57 AM
As cool as it sounds, I feel this is abusable. You could imagine the possibilities of naming oneself "Bitcoin Founder", "Satoshi's son" "theymos's BFF" just to state a few Cheesy

Sounds excellent.

Here be the first lesson of power and wealth - you abuse it for your own ends.

The weedier ranks can watch and learn as the hyper elite go down in a bonfire of hubris in real time.
1506  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2020-04-04] Class-action lawsuits filed against 11 Bitcoin companies on: April 08, 2020, 11:55:11 PM
part of me wonders if this is almost purely a bluff on the part of the plaintiffs. if the cost of settling is low enough, the companies may be happy to settle just to avoid bad PR.

I assumed that was their prime objective, not that I'm qualified to guess shit. I thought it might be the equivalent of patent trolling.

Presumably any sizeable crypto business is hit with frivolous stuff like this on a regular basis, though it gets less publicity. I doubt any of them would want to set any type of precedent by caving to no marks for the sake of a quiet life.
1507  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Cryptopia has been in "maintenance" for the last 14 hours! on: April 08, 2020, 11:50:32 PM
However, the blockchains of the coins that I had at Cryptopia have already forked to get rid of Cryptopia's holdings/dump... Roll Eyes

A true definition of shitcoin.

Does this judgement definitively mean people will get a decent portion of what they had there back or is it just the first step?

Are there any threads on here about exchange ruination resolution? I saw a thing about a Cryptsy payout today, an insulting one, I can't think off the top of my head about any dead exchanges that had a happy ending.
1508  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Hacking Bisq on: April 08, 2020, 11:46:27 PM
Looks like the above statement is one of their major mistakes. They should have thoroughly audited the software before releasing it for serious transactions. That is a serious security flaw that shouldn't have been missed.

Holes are uncovered in software put together by the most competent teams in the world, sometimes after years of pain free use. I can't imagine Bisq's team is a big one or has a vast amount of time and money.

Somewhere out there is always someone looking to go up against your skills and a lot of times they'll succeed.
1509  Other / Meta / Re: + 2000 Activity & + 2000 Merit on: April 08, 2020, 08:17:31 PM
I have updated the list today for you @LFC_Bitcoin.
Here is it..

Add 1000 airdropped merit to my score. That makes me a peon in comparison.

A higher rank would be really cool, it’s been mentioned before though & theymos hasn’t taken the bait....yet!

True, I did lookup "What's after Legendary" and some terms such as Mythical, Divine and Eternals were suggested. But I personally feel the term Legendary seems to stick well especially if it's been made a catchphrase by this guy Cheesy

I would favour the rank of - Holeee Shit. Every thread would have to observe one minute of silence every time such a deity made their entrance.
1510  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: April 08, 2020, 07:52:41 PM
Funny thing is chicks do smell every goddamn thing.

Depends on the chick. I was with a lass for a while who decided my shower was 'dirty' because it was old and unfashionable so refused to wash in it. After 2-3 days she smelt like a horse but seemed remarkably unbothered by it unlike myself.

When I was a kid I spent many months insisting I could catch a whiff of something rotten rushing through the kitchen. My mother consistently poo poohed me until I had a rummage and located a deep fat fryer with unidentified food melted into it. Since she's a human garbage disposal unit who'll eat anything I decided to dispose of it in private.

1511  Economy / Exchanges / Re: BINANCE TO LAUNCH ITS OWN MINING POOL on: April 08, 2020, 07:18:25 PM
Binance mining pool sounds cool on paper, but in reality, it will be a mess.

Even the stupidest and greediest miner is a whole lot better versed in crypto than their average retail customer. Binance will be up against rivals with vast amounts of experience. If they can't cut it they'll soon be gone.

I hope that is the case because CZ has already proven himself to be very stupid with his roll back talk. That didn't matter when he ran an exchange, it might if he ran a pool though it would be deserted in a shot.
1512  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will bitcoin last forever? on: April 08, 2020, 11:23:36 AM
Censorship-resistance is more the value proposition, and the need for a secure "truth" ledger that can't be modified, plus the costs spent to mine the rewards.

I meant principles in the sense of foundations, not going vegan or owt. As long as they stay at the forefront of the minds of developers and other maintainers of the ecosystem it doesn't matter what the nuts and bolts underneath look like as long as they reinforce that.
1513  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: CRYPTSY stopping withdraw locking accounts without notifying users! Class Action on: April 08, 2020, 10:45:30 AM
https://old.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/fwyt09/after_roughly_6_years_my_buddy_who_had_roughly/

Somebody on Reddit got their payout in the thread above. They got a heady $75. It says they had $3500 on it when it shut down. I wonder what that would be worth these days.
1514  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will bitcoin last forever? on: April 07, 2020, 04:20:46 PM
Depends how its considered because there is Model T Fords still around donkeys years afterwards but it cant be argued they are still used in mainstream as such as they are long surpassed.  However they still do the job and are respected to this day, to this extent I think BTC will always be around but not always the premier within crypto.    Its very possible its nowhere its peak yet, this is the big speculation as price is expected to rise.

All Bitcoin is is a ledger with principles that enough people agree to. That's the part that has value. Nothing technical does. That being the case you can continue to upgrade the back end indefinitely and infinitely as long as the ledger is carried forward and remains compatible and enough people continue to agree to its principles.

That gives it a better shot of sticking around as long as we have a use for monetary exchange than most things out there.
1515  Other / Meta / Re: Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy on: April 07, 2020, 03:52:05 PM
I'm relatively sure most users here have 2-5 lawsuits going against bitcointalk at any one time. It's the done thing. We have a weekly meet up online to discuss the ongoing cases. You should join in. It's fun.
1516  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2020-03-05] Power Plant Mines BTC 5.5/day on: April 07, 2020, 03:49:16 PM
So what? Cloud mining is much more efficient.

Go away and do your homework. You'll get a smacked botty if you continue to display such mindlessness.

Cloud mining is almost always a ponzi scheme so there are indeed no miners. All they're doing it stealing your money.

For the handful of real ones you are renting a portion of the profit from facilities just like this one.

Elsewhere I've seen power facilities involved in oil and gas bringing in plug in mining units to make some money from power going idle.
1517  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Exchanges. How do they work on: April 07, 2020, 12:04:08 PM
• Only deal with top and reputable exchanges. Do not risk your fund in any shady or relatively new exchange. (Also do not sign up to untrusted exchanges as your personal data can be sold)
Agreed ! Is there some obvious big exchange that everyone uses ?
(I see Binance pop up a lot in the forums)

• Exchanges do not function as a bank or a wallet address, so do not store fiat or cryptocurrency in it. Only deposit either of them when you are ready to exchange.
Why not ? (I don't doubt what you said, I just want to understand why)
Is it not recommanded to deposit in order to wait for the good opportunity, may it be 3 months later ?

Binance won't let you deposit fiat unless you use one of their subsidiary exchanges like Binance Jersey.

Other main ones for EUR are - Coinbase Pro, Kraken, Bitstamp. There are others out there but those are the main ones. If another one tempts you then look it up here and do plenty of research.

As for not leaving money on exchanges, they don't have a good track record for getting hacked and losing your funds. It's much less likely with a decent exchange but still possible.

Much more likely you will get hacked and your exchange account will be drained so start paying close attention to your online security practices. Exchanges won't cover you for that loss.
1518  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Getting listed on Coinbase? on: April 07, 2020, 10:43:19 AM
Isn't OKEX a pretty decent exchange with good volume?

Yes. It's a big one and a long established one. They have an absolute sea of stuff listed so it's still going to have to work to be noticed - https://coinmarketcap.com/exchanges/okex/

It certainly won't hurt its prospects all the same.
1519  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Exchanges. How do they work on: April 07, 2020, 09:59:09 AM
Do they all work like that ? They don't explain it clearly...
So people deposit their euros or dollars on the exchange and leave them there until they buy crypto ? doesn't that makes exchanges a kind of bank ?
Can you get back you fiat from the exchange to your bank account if you change your mind ?

There are what most people would call exchanges and then there are what I'd call buying services which is what that video looks like.

An exchange hosts buys and sells between users. They provide the platform to trade but you're not buying or selling from the exchange, it's other people on there. The exchange handles the money coming in and out and the means to trade. The actual trading happens between their customers.

You can see here - https://poloniex.com/exchange#usdt_btc  the sell orders and buy orders. Those are different users constantly meeting in the middle.

With a buying service you're not waiting for another user to meet your price, the service sets the price and you pay it. That's where the slight variation might happen. Quite often markets move so fast that they can't achieve the price they're showing you but I wouldn't use a service like that that didn't guarantee what I was paying. That's their job. With a proper exchange that price is 100% live so that can't happen, if you don't meet the price the sale doesn't happen.

Another example of the difference is Coinbase vs Coinbase Pro. Coinbase is a buying service, Coinbase Pro is an exchange.

You should always be able to withdraw your fiat. Some places will have limits on how much based on your level of ID verification.
1520  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Exchanges. How do they work on: April 07, 2020, 09:35:50 AM
You send your fiat to the exchange and park it in your account there before buying. How long it takes is entirely down to your bank and the exchange's system. They all have different set ups.

The only time the BTC/EUR rate applies is the moment when you actually buy BTC on the exchange. If you don't have EUR ready to spend in your exchange account then you can't buy anything.

'Slightly vary' sounds a bit weird to me. I would expect to receive exactly what I paid for minus fees. Which exchange published this video?
