161  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Article from Coindesk. Are Bitcoin Developers Losing Faith in Lightning? on: April 04, 2024, 08:21:33 PM
Good that we are having a discussion about this. The community needs to put more pressure on devs, otherwise we will get nowhere. LN has been going stale and devs it seems have been running out of fresh ideas.

But Bitcoin is safe. Lightning was never a requirement for Bitcoin and even if it fails, something else will take it's place.
162  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Has anyone here ever visited El Salvador and tried paying with bitcoin there? on: April 03, 2024, 12:14:58 PM
No, I am not exposing myself to 16 hours worth of flight radiation just to spend Bitcoin in El Salvador. Roll Eyes

I can spend Bitcoin in basically any country in the world as long as I have an internet connection. Hell, I could sell my entire wallet seed without an internet connect, in an emergency situation, if I had to do that.

Oh?   so you just came up with that rhyme?

The amalgamation is completely original. Also, my not was more creative than your not: It had the element of requiring you to quote me. Grin
164  Other / Meta / Re: Can Grin become a payment method again? on: April 02, 2024, 10:13:27 PM
Grin's market cap is only at $9.8 million today and there's barely any trading volume and liquidity on centralized exchanges. Safe to assume that it has little to no attention now and that it's pretty much a 'dead' project now, unfortunately. If it had little to no usage back then, then pretty much almost no one would be using it today.

I think that the problem is that Grin had bad marketing / business development. Many people never really warmed up to Grin.

166  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Unbacked stable coins are a big danger on: April 02, 2024, 09:09:31 PM
The problem is not only in whether or not the so-called stablecoins are backed by anything, but also in the fact that most of them are centralized to such an extent that their issuers can freeze them at any time. All those who use stablecoins for any reason are therefore always exposed to these risks - so the question arises whether it makes more sense to trust fiat currencies of central banks or so-called stablecoins, which are practically the same thing issued by private companies.

The volatility of Bitcoin can be a problem for those who invest in the short term and are also prone to panic - but if you are in Bitcoin for the long term, then this volatility can only be an advantage, not a disadvantage.

PSA: Most Stablecoins Can Be Frozen, Even in Your Own Wallets

It is not the stablecoins themselves which have the main issue of being centralized, although they do add another layer of centralization on top of their blockchain, which is already semi-centralized.

Binance chain, Ethereum, all centralized from what I can tell. Binance chain has what, 21 validators? Ethereum is now PoS (Proof-of-Stake) and two addresses controlled almost half of all Ethereum nodes on day 1 of the PoS launch. Obviously the future of stablecoins is steering into the direction of centralization.

But if people wanted to avoid the downsides of fiat, why would they peg their crypto to fiat? Do they not understand why it is important to get rid of their Fiat in the first place? Huh
1 BTC = 1 BTC.

172  Other / Meta / Re: Adjustments to Merit calculation on: April 01, 2024, 01:19:53 AM
In recent years, it seems that a lot of people have been making low-value posts just to get paid. To address this, I've added a merit "cost" to posting: from this point forward, for every 15 characters you post, you will lose one Merit point. This should eliminate any incentive to make low-value posts.

Any halfway-decent poster should be able to earn much more merit than they lose due to the penalty. But I recognize that some good posts are occasionally overlooked. So to counterbalance the penalty, I also added a system whereby you will earn a bit of merit just by reading posts. If you want to write a lot, you'd better do some reading as well!

For both the penalty and the bonus, this applies only to your merit score, and does not affect sendable merit (sMerit).

Let me know what you think of these adjustments.

You are not getting me this year! I hope.

174  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How would you dispose of a steel plate seed backup? on: March 30, 2024, 09:10:44 PM
The simplest option is transferring the coins on that wallet seed phrase to a new wallet, this way even if the seed phrase is detected it will be useless to the person in its possession.

It's not totally useless because it contains your transaction history and you might want it not fall into other's hands. Also there could be situations where it's not an option - you want to destroy just a backup, not the wallet. Imagine you have two backups, one at your current location and another at a remote and safe location. Let's say you are moving from your current location to some new one where you wouldn't keep your steel backup with you because the new place is not safe enough. So you'd want to destroy the backup at your current location, while still relying on the backup at your other safe location.

Destroying the hardware itself seems pointless

Your wallet transaction history can be traced regardless of which wallet it is in, because the blockchain itself is a public ledger. If you are that worried about your transaction history, you can always swap your Bitcoin for Monero in a non custodial way and them send them between a couple of other Monero wallets and switch back to Bitcoin and send it to your new wallet. (Although this could make centralized exchanges view your coins with suspicion).
175  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is age a limitation in Bitcoin on: March 30, 2024, 01:56:58 PM
Hi there to all of you. One of the most amazing things I've noticed about Bitcoin is that it doesn't have an age requirement before using it or creating a wallet. In traditional banking, however, one must be 16 or older to open an account, unless they have assistance from a guide who helped them do so. Additionally, no matter how young you are, no one can question you about how you make money because no one keeps an eye on your wallet.

There is no age limitation that can possibly be enforced. Bitcoin is completely open to all and not even the government has the power to prohibit it. All it takes is an internet connection.

Now as to the question of whether a parent imposed age limitation is wise:

Is a $1 dollar bank note alright for children to have? What about $10? $100? Of course it is alright for them to have and spend and do whatever they want with it, but whether or not the child has been educated on how to use it and spend it responsibly is the parent's job. Teach them about Bitcoin and how to use it responsibly.

176  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Isn't trading almost like gambling? on: March 30, 2024, 02:14:58 AM
Today I visited a friend who is a forex trader, according to him he trades on the USD, gold and BTC and I normally don't fancy the idea of trading because it appears a bit complex for my understanding and from my little knowledge, it seems as though trading is almost same as gambling because at the end of your analysis you're not sure of the outcome of the trade since it's basically a short term adventure and the volatile nature of most traded items depict it to be uncertain with time.

He has lost almost $5000 dollar in course of his trade and he is still positive that he is going to recover all is lost money back in his next trade. I don't really know how trading works that much cause what I have learnt and I have been used to is to Buy a certain asset like the BTC or any valuable asset that will appreciate with time and HODL it. I know that this strategy isn't for someone of his kind that's basically looking for any immediate means of doubling his income and so long term investment won't necessarily seem a good idea for him.

My question is, isn't trading almost like gambling considering it uncertainty and also looking from the fact that he has lost a fortune out of trading within a short space of time?

Is it possible for him to easily recover his money back or is losses like that very much a part of the trading experience?

No, gambling and trading are very different. For the main part, gambling casinos will always have a 'house edge' which ensures they win more often than the players. This has to do with probability. In trading, the odds are the same for everyone (except insider traders). The only thing that sets you apart in trading is having the ability to create your own "edge" by making good judgement calls on coins/investments that are worth trading. And that depends on your experience, skills, willpower and knowledge.

There is a huge difference in investing in some unknown memecoin or into a worthwhile business.
177  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Wait for the right set-up on: March 29, 2024, 09:01:01 PM
People actually don't know how important it is to wait for the right set-up, some traders think that the more you trade the more money you make which is very much unlikely, trading doesn't work like that, you might make a lot of money from 5 to 7 trades, and use just only one trade to lose everything including your initial magin.

But waiting for the right set-up gives you an edge in the market, when you trade only when you sees an opportunity, you will mostly comes out profitable, as long as you knows the craft a little, but probing the market every now and then will only make you lose money, because trading is more of patience and knowledge.

The problem most traders have is a lack of patience and emotional control. Some traders see a big candle and decide to act on it, abandoning their previous well-thought-out strategy for emotional desire. And then what happens? Reversal, loss of control, panic-selling.
178  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: What should newbies do in trading? on: March 29, 2024, 08:56:43 PM
demo trading does not bring such emotions

This is the main problem, I think.

You are letting your emotions take over control. That ends badly every time. Follow a strategy and do not stray on your path...
179  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can I really hold onto my bitcoins in the future? on: March 29, 2024, 11:52:25 AM
I would not sell before the halving. And I would not sell after, either. If you absolutely need to spend money, then go ahead but selling for the reason of being worried about the Bitcoin price will always go wrong. Either you believe in your investment or you do not but you need to make a choice otherwise you will end up buying high selling low.

We could make our own custom mod? Although I am no expert on SMF software but there could be a possible solution.
Yes, that's the perks of an open source software — particularly a forum software. I don't know if theymos did make a documentation of everything he made like what i mentioned (trust, merit, flag, etc.) for open source community to be forked, used and improved.

And yes, those are possible, but with a limited developer (theymos and PowerGlove) and demands from the community i don't think it will be developed too soon.

I think the demand will be there once implemented. It would even encourage problem solving in the dev community.
