1921  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Isn't Mtgox multiple currency trading kind of a sham? on: September 11, 2011, 04:14:09 PM
I don't see any new feature or change on the trading interface regarding different currency markets and in fact they have *removed* all reference to depositing via Australian dollars.

Yeah, this was confusing. It looks like the options shown for Add Funds are dependent on your selected wallet. I got an AUD wallet by swapping my main account currency to AUD, then back to USD. Then if you change to your AUD wallet via the dropdown next to your username the Technocash deposit method should be visible again.

Wow... I specifically created an AUD wallet like that before in order to try that - and it didn't work last time. Now It's showing up.
Oh well - that's good!  Technocash is much cheaper than wire to HK for small amounts.

Krugman's Bitcoin Error

2011-09-10

http://presentcynosure.wordpress.com/2011/09/10/krugmans-bitcoin-error/

"Paul Krugman, the nobel prize winning economist, is not really interested in Bitcoin. The only reason he recently wrote about the new cryptocurrency in his New York Times blog is because some people have urged him to. "

1923  Economy / Speculation / Re: Massive spike to $7 sunday 3PM BST on: September 11, 2011, 03:26:16 PM
Bitcoin Monitor has lost its feed from MtGox.  Lots of Gox trades happening but they're not showing up now.

Oooh oooh, I wasn't around to say it last time, so...

"Gox got goxxed!"

That implies an external agent doing the goxing..  I think it's more likely:  "Gox goxxed itself!"

1924  Economy / Speculation / Re: Paul Krugman Vanished up his own ass. on: September 11, 2011, 08:18:07 AM

2. Not all of the coins have been issued yet, The inflation choked out the bubble. That's called brilliant design.

That's a perspective I hadn't really considered. Nice!
1925  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin fragmentation on: September 11, 2011, 06:36:05 AM
SO i could just send the bitcoins to myself and that would defrag my bitcoins as well?

Yes - but read some of the answers on this stackexchange question to see why you might not want to do this:

1926  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Isn't Mtgox multiple currency trading kind of a sham? on: September 09, 2011, 01:48:07 PM
Worse.. by removing the Technocash deposit method - it now costs me $22 to wire funds instead of 5%.

I had intended to buy some IT services using BTC and deposit small amounts (e.g under $100) as necessary.  (I've added as little as $50 before)
This change has basically made it much less practical to buy BTC for ad hoc spending purposes (as opposed to bulk speculation!) via mtgox.

I guess it's time to take another look at the other exchanges.

1927  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Isn't Mtgox multiple currency trading kind of a sham? on: September 09, 2011, 01:19:11 PM
You can change your account settings in Gox to trade in your primary currency.

When you login click your username and then have a look at the setting about currency and wallets.

That's exactly the crappy unexplained interface I was complaining about above!
1928  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Isn't Mtgox multiple currency trading kind of a sham? on: September 09, 2011, 01:13:31 PM
It turns out I can create an AUD (or any currency I guess) wallet by flipping my main currency to AUD and then back to USD.
Now I can sell my bitcoins into that wallet.
Before I did this - only USD was available.

Still no explanation on why the previous method of depositing AUD no longer shows up.
I'm guessing that it now *has* to be done by International Wire to the Hong Kong account - which is actually more of a pain for me.

What a poor interface and what a crazy lack of documentation for a feature upgrade.

I think mtgox needs to do some hiring (and/or firing).
1929  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Isn't Mtgox multiple currency trading kind of a sham? on: September 09, 2011, 12:51:02 PM
The announcement on september the 2nd seems like vapour.
It says mtgox "will introduce fifteen new currency markets"   but when??  next year??

I don't see any new feature or change on the trading interface regarding different currency markets and in fact they have *removed* all reference to depositing via Australian dollars.

A nebulous press release about adding more trading features some time...  and then removing an international deposit method without any explanation???

That's a pretty shabby effort.

EDIT: oh.. I see in 'register a new account' there are other currencies.
gee.. Do you think maybe they could tell existing customers that?  FFS.  Roll Eyes

So now what.. I have to create a new account? Will my yubikey still work?  Do I just transfer my balance?

So many questions.. and no explanation to existing customers. WTF sort of feature release was that?!

Further EDIT:
So I can change my main currency in 'settings'.  There is a confusing post on support.mtgox.com about multi-currency and how to change wallet currency.
Seriously unimpressed with how this was handled.
Can I create a wallet in a currency without depositing new funds?  This just raises more questions.
1930  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Removal of bank deposit for Australia via Technocash? on: September 09, 2011, 12:36:36 PM
This is *really* poor form from mtgox.

There is nothing to indicate whether this method of deposit is still available or not.
Some people might not even look at the website as they already have the details recorded - what happens to their deposit?

How bloody difficult is it to put some words of explanation on the website???

Seriously?  That article is a month old and has already been reported here.
It's ridiculous inflammatory title has also spent more of it's fair share in the google limelight and provided a source of junk material for lazy journalists to write copycat articles.
1937  Other / Off-topic / Re: I Manufacture machines that generate free electricity. A match made in heaven? on: September 08, 2011, 01:37:15 PM
I don't remember where I read about this machine but if I remember correctly, magnetism of the magnets deteriorate over time, that's where the energy is coming from.

No - your memory has just been sucked into playing their game by thinking there even *is* any energy produced.
If they can get you arguing about where it's coming from - they conveniently get you ignoring the fact that it isn't even there.

1938  Economy / Speculation / Re: When does trading happen the most? on: September 08, 2011, 12:56:56 PM
EST generally means Eastern Standard, most likely due to the fact that its the first timezone here i the states/it's New York's timezone (rather, who it's used for so much stuff here in the states)

Yes - our country has an East too.. we sometimes even have standards..  also clocks!
EST is Eastern Standard Time here too.
Our largest city Sydney uses it - and also our capital city Canberra plus Melbourne, Brisbane and other population centres.
Being the 'east' it's the first timezone here too (how about that!)
It's also used for 'so much stuff' here.

So.. the upshot is - You don't want to hear times quoted in our EST - we don't want to hear times in your EST.
These sorts of abbreviations are parochial and ambiguous in a forum like this.

UTC is a global reference point.

PGP-signed list of a portion of addresses I pre-generated for this project (all coins made thus far are within this list).

http://pastebin.com/XebW67V4

Isn't this just a resource which assists counterfeiters?
Without this list - counterfeiters would need to re-use addresses from a small pool in order for their coins to pass the basic 'public-address shows value in blockchain' test.

What is the motivation for publicly releasing this list?   Are you likely to do this in future?  (I'm hoping not)

Even if you have no intention of maintaining any sort of dupe-public-key tracking/reporting app - someone else might want to, and having a list of *all* released coins might reduce the usefulness of that.  Being able to verify a key by search once you know it is fine - but I don't think they should be listable.

1940  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Bitcoin Show on OnlyOneTV.com on: September 08, 2011, 08:15:54 AM
Amazingly.. he appears to be continuing with the show:

Can he be unaware of the lack of community support he now has?  Does he just not care???

You expected someone who is convicted of FRAUD to care about what people think of him? Cheesy

well.. asking if someone who seems sociopathic, 'cares' is a bit silly of me Tongue
I guess what I mean to be incredulous about is that he thinks he has any chance of getting sponsors and guests in future.
