We wanted to let everyone know we have successfully compiled the block reward reduction code into the windows wallet and it performs as expected on test net!

We will be able to specify a certain block that the reduction kicks in so after we give everyone a week to update the reduction will kick in for everyone at the same block.

We are now testing the difficulty re-target code. We are using our own modified re-target code.

I have been popping in and out of this thread.  The community support is tremendous, and the developer is very active.  Those are both essential to the success of any coin.

Can anyone explain why there has been such a precipitous drop in the price the past two weeks, and what is going to provide some relief and increases prices again?

The issues with Mt.Gox have led to a decline in Bitcoin Prices which has affected us. Also, multipools have been jumping on and off every 2-3 hours and messing with the difficulty and then dumping their coins.

We are releasing an update on Friday that will change the difficulty re-target to every 1 minute. We will also change the reward structure so there is a 0.5% reward reduction every week. Both of these changes will have a positive long term effect on price.

Less time you give all a chance the update, the greater chance for a fork.  I'd say don't rush it and set the block retarget about a week away.
This is a very good point. Thank you for your input!

Given the current difficulty swings do to multi-pools how long to you as pool owners feel we should wait after releasing the update on Friday for the difficulty readjustment?

Would 24 hours be enough time to allow for everyone in different time zones to update? Or should we wait 48-72 hours?

We want to put an end to this problem as soon as possible but without causing other issues. What are your thoughts?

Hi, has anyone offered to fix the (no offense) horribly photoshopped picture of the Digiman with the screen on the homepage of digibytes.co?
I could do it if a Dev could send me an HD picture of the Digiman and the Screen, because I tried photoshopping it in its current state and it's almost impossible to get better results. I can remove all the white lining, but then it leaves all the endings extremely jagged.
No offense taken, it was on our to do list, we just needed to push the update through. We are also waiting to get the new DigiMan in some new poses from Bman3.

How does it look now? http://www.digibyte.co/

Might be great to have DGB get on board with Paypal:

This is a very good idea, we will be making a pitch to companies like PayPal after we become a bit more established here in the next month or two. We have some development left to do before then. But it will happen in due time.
1987  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Premines and why they are bad on: February 19, 2014, 05:56:14 PM
Thank you for taking the time to lay out your opposition to a premine. We agree that a premine can often be a bad thing, but if done correctly is is a very powerful boost to a coins long term success.

Since we can only speak from our own coin's experience here is what our 0.5% premine (less than 0.25% now) has allowed us to accomplish:
* Allowed us to get DigiBytes in over 5,000 wallets in the first week of the coins life with giveaways. Approaching 20,000 now.
* Has allowed us to pay several people for their continued development work. (Android wallet, language translations etc)
* Has paid for server expenses and web hosting.
* Has paid and will continue to pay for advertising expenses.
* Has allowed members of the Dev team to work full time on the project (100s of hours at this point in time).
* Will help members of the dev team travel to the Crypto Connvention in New York and promote DigiByte.
* Most importantly, it ensures we are committed to DigiByte each and every day.
* We have a reason to stay committed to DigiByte and not go make a new coin next week!

Many of the people we gave DigiBytes to told us they do not have any miners or significant hash power and the only reason they supported DigiByte was because we gave them a part of the premine. This has been very powerful as some of these people continue to be true supporters who have contributed to DigiByte in other very creative ways.

By premining and giving it away you can motivate more people to download a wallet and spread the coins out to more people. It is much more fair than only a few large miners mining most of the coins the first few days. How many miners are actually going to give back to the coins development team or give them away to new users who have no hash power?

Quote
I tell ya i would have loved to have a 105 million Digibyte before launch i could have sold a bit way higher and bought back lower and still have the 105 million untouched.

This would go against everything we are trying to accomplish. Our goal was to use the premine to get as many users as possible to download the wallet and to continue development into the future. Our goal was to offer a legitimate solution to the crypto community for a coin that could achieve main stream adoption by merchants and customers alike. This was never intended to be a get rich quick scam, otherwise you would have seen 105 million DGB dumped on exchanges a few weeks ago.

We spent a few hundred combined hours working on DigiByte before we launched it. Since then it has been a full time job 7 days a week. We have responded to over 5000 messages, posts, tweets etc since launch. We have continued to add new features and will continue to do so.

Launching a coin is expensive, if you calculate development expenses and labor costs your are easily expending several thousand dollars a month.

We felt a 0.5% premine was very fair if we gave half of it away in the first few weeks. We now are holding on to about 47 million of the original premine. With 566 million coins currently in circulation we are only holding about 8.3% of all coins now.

Most of the premine has been given away or used to pay for development. We have only sold about 5 million of the 105 million on an exchange for Bitcoin to pay for expenses. This has been done very slowly over the course of the last few weeks as not to dramatically affect the price.

Many miners & investors have dumped more than 5 million DGB on exchanges. Why would we want to kill off a coin that has the potential to be a billion dollar payment network in the next 12 months?

Once again, we are very committed to a bright long term future for DigiByte! The premine will allow for this to happen. Thanks again for starting this discussion and we look forward to answering any questions anyone may have.

- The DigiByte Team

What if we were to remove the total coin cap and allow subsequent blocks after the 20/19.5th year point to give 160 coins per block as an inflationary/replace-lostcoins/stablising reward??
if not 160, maybe 80 coins per block after that point?

This is just to counter the deflationary model that the majority of cryptocoins out there have. Its got more advantages than disadvantages i believe..

Or should this idea only be considered after significantly growing?

This is a great idea, but we will not be implementing this go around. We have many (20) years to implement this. Definitely something to consider later on down the road for sure!

Here is an update on the Friday code update:

After a late night last night we have been able to get the block reduction and difficulty re-adjustment code working on testnet. We are now working on transaction message support.

Our goal is to allow everyone to start updating this Friday around 7pm UTC as mentioned before.

The first reward reduction will not take place until next Wednesday to give people and pools a chance to update. (Will kick in at a specific block sometime Wednesday).

As far as the difficulty re-adjustment we would like that to go into effect as soon as possible. We are working on making that kick in at a specific block as well. More than likely that will be a 24 hour or 48 hour window. This applies mostly to pool operators.

We will announce more by the end of the day as to the specifics of that timeline.

Our goal is to get all clients to "fork" at the same block with the new parameters.

Rather than constantly complaining, go to the IRC channel and speak with the development team there. They are working on the fix to solve the issues. Take some action!

look my new promotion video of digibyte on:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUJd3rBQwjc

Is that professional video with voice over that dev team was pitching couple of weeks ago?

Doesn't look like it.   Now friday is nearing and we dont hear anything from the dev how the new update will be rolling out.

This coin is a total flop.

I offered my help and ideas but heard nothing back.

The voice over is complete and we have a recording of it. We have had the voice over for a few weeks now. The designer who was building the video has not replied to us in the past week. The last update he gave said it would be complete by the middle of last week. Hopefully we hear from him soon and everything is ok.

whats happened to the Digibute forum of late?  It's a real spam-fest. If you need more moderators etc to clean it up either myself or I'm sure many others would gladly volunteer but it's pretty unreadable at the moment :/
We just noticed this ourselves. We do not have mod access there either. We need to get on top of this, it is bad for the coins image.

I'm halting all of my trades and pulling all of my funds from Crypsty until Digibyte is added. I encourage everyone else to do the same. With enough users - we will make an impact and prove that Digibyte is worth adding. I better trade elsewhere as I am all in on Digibyte now.
Thank you for your support!

If anyone would like to see what the block reward structure will look like once we implement the 0.5% weekly reduction look here: http://digiaddress.org/reward/reward_new.pl

Also we are on IRC if anyone would like to ask questions about the update/development: http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=#digibytecoin

Also just added the DGB Mining P2P pools.

If we have forgot anyone please let us now. Will be updating the site momentarily. Thanks again!

If you implement automatic wallet update can you promise to never turn evil? at least who whoever does the programming for the update? because I would hate to wake up one day and find out the latest implemented update had xxx problem because  [insert name] updated the wallet with a bug/worm which allowed him to do this or that

We will NOT be implementing an auto update feature for this very reason.
Don't get me wrong, it is a great implementation that will solve the wallet update problem for the average user who is not tech-savy. I think you can implement an update system which requires the user to input their password prior to update? Maybe the details for each update will pop-up prior to clicking next to actually go through with update? This can help to ensure users put a passcode on their wallet as well!

Also, for the new update, wouldn't it be easier to use a .exe file ? Im no tech expert but I seen some wallets only have the .exe file that configures everything for the user and ensure the .conf file is present in the roaming folder to avoid sync issues.

This is a very good idea. A password input might be the way to go. We will not be adding it on this update though.

We decided that since we are "hard" forking the DigiByte block chain we will only make a few changes to the existing client to take care of the Multi-Pool problem and block reward. We do not want to risk adding several untested features right away on top of a hardfork.

We would like more time to test features like auto update etc before releasing them. We can add most other features later on without requiring a hard fork.
