1101  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ★★ DigiByte ★★ [DGB] ✈ DigiShield ✔ v2.9.1 ✔ Help us test the multi-algo update! on: July 29, 2014, 08:35:54 PM
Different post so as to not make a huge and confusing chain of replies. I recently had to reinstall the DGB client and can't seem to be able to download the block chain. Any suggestions on how to fix this?
Are you stuck somewhere or doesn't it even start?
Doesn't even start. I've begun to think that it's something wrong with the build of the client I have? Maybe it doesn't have any main peers listed, I'll have to check.
Which version of the wallet are you running? We just reset the primary seed nodes in the wallet. A lot of exchanges have went offline so we will update the master seed node list when we release the next wallet update.

Just bought 109k DGB! All I can afford right now... It's hard to get USD on the market.
I'll be glad when that get's changed for DGB Wink

Make a splash at the convention!  Grin
We are working hard to make this much easier for DGB! Convention going well so far, all the big banks are represented here!

Any team that sticks with their coin this long in this current environment is worth a lot of praise and patience (imho).

Regarding mass adoption, all a coin really needs is to leverage their brand/tech. for a specific valuable purpose or service, it becomes a vehicle for proper use and your coins (shares) become a valuable piece of that system. It's a pipe-dream for daytraders and used by BS artists with scam coins to make BTC, but it does and will continue to happen. Let BTC be mass adopted, but if you were to assume the ZETA case were real (another can of worms) then it is easy to see where particular technologies may very well end up in the years to come. DGB seem to be taking that path and have remained professional all year. They've proven they can dev. and adapt and have stuck with DGB through all the shit 2014 has thrown at altcoins.

Use it like the rest to yoink some BTC it's an unfortunate reality, but if they continue and find a place or service to slot their brand/coin into then you have a longer term winner. It seems they aren't going anywhere, and I'm sure they will continue to evolve until they are just right for their place on the board. You also can't underestimate the relationships they continue to solidify.

This isn't even me shilling. I won't lie much earlier in the year I wanted DGB out of the equation (they are a tough, stubborn and respected competition despite their market cap), but after so long of Jared and his team remaining polite and doing what they can in this environment I now watch and support DGB developments from the side.

TLDR: Multi-algo fork must be a tough gig and it's hard to agree upon which algos. I like DGB and good luck. Smiley

Thank you very much for the support & kind words! We are glad to see our efforts being recognized like this. We are committed and we are working hard on several things in the background right now that will have far more impact than an algo update (although it is a big update & we should see a positive response from the crypto community at large).

We just landed in New York and will be attending the first ever Digital Currencies convention for bankers tomorrow. You can find more info here: http://www.americanbanker.com/conferences/digitalcurrencies/

This is all fitting together for DigiPay LLC as well as merchant adoption later on for DigiByte. Our goal is to have the multi-algo update released by this coming weekend. Thank you everyone for the support & lets keep these awesome discussions going within the community. There are a lot of very good ideas coming from some bright & talented people. Thanks you!

The dev isnt even comfterble holding his coins anymore, as he stated a while back, the premine is gone.. lol
We understand peoples frustration right now, but things do take time to mature. We are here, we are focused and we are working hard.

As stated many, many times the premine was for development & promotion of DigiByte. It has sustained us now for 8 months until we have been able to gather out side investment support.

We ourselves are actually buying right now, it is an excellent time to buy. Thank you all for your support!

This is great information! Thank you for sharing!

Gents, a question... First off all, I think the price of the coin is very undervalued...
However, when we have multiple mining on the go, this will even create more DGB coins...

Don't you think this will drive the price even further down due to high inflation ? Thank you.

Actually the block rewards are the same if I am not mistaken

It is my understanding as well that the block reward will stay the same.

The percentage payouts per MH/s are very different depending independently on each algo's hashrate and resulting difficulty. This leaves the SHA and scrypt miners at a distinct disadvantage to begin with (you lose money mining with SHA even with ASIC, and while you lose money mining scrypt with GPU, you can *still* make money using ASIC), but I would still prefer modified payouts as well. Difficulties seem to be joined at the hip. It's roughly a .0349:1 ratio per MH/s regardless of the algo (which means that the same difficulty is applied to to each individual algo given its hashrate at the time).

Here's a little study I did on MYR:

Do you really think so? Where are you getting your data? Blocks are being mined at an equal rate (more or less) regardless of the algo being used.  http://myriad.theblockexplorer.com  And the block reward is the same.

Yes I have used this page. On that page you have an information how many coins you are getting per unified MH unit.

340 MYR / MH day by Sricpt
2805 MYR / MH day by Skein

Of course this data fluctuates with every block a bit.

My SKEIN GPU rig has power usage 300 W / 1 MH = 2805/300 = 9,35 MYR / W
My SCRIPT ZEUS Blizzard miner has 38 W / 1 MH = 340/38 = 8,94 MYR / W

Okay, I’ve been going over the numbers, and your numbers are looking better and better, but . . .

Should it be the case that you are correct, the ASIC issue would be mute since effective reward adjustment would  be already happening on an individual miner, per MH/s, basis.

Looking at things from the total number of coins mined and their distribution to individual miners on a 1 MH/s basis, we move in your direction, but are unable to arrive at a similar conclusion with respect to Scrypt (on the other hand, the numbers suggest that SHA-256 should be effectively neutralized).

I’m going to use the numbers taken from the following snapshot.

Let’s divide the 120,000 coins mined each hour by the 5 algos doing the mining.

That leaves us with 24,000 coins, per hour, for each algo.

If we then divide those 24,000 coins by the respective algo hashrates, we come up with the following results:

Scrypt = 14.916096 coins per hour per MH/s
SHA-256 = .0011722 coins per hour per MH/s
Groestl = 2.2573363 coins per hour per MH/s
Skein = .3992414 coins per hour per MH/s
Qubit = 8.4299262 coins per hour per MH/s

That’s simply dividing the reward by the collective hashrates. The per hour, per MH/s distribution is what it is.

Same machine DAILY results would be roughly the following:

Scrypt = 357.9863 coins @ 1 MH/s
SHA-256 = 28.1328 coins @ 1 GH/s
Groestl = 920.9932 coins @ 17 MH/s
Skein = 1197.7242 coins @ 120 MH/s
Qubit = 1143.0979 coins @ 5.65 MH/s

That’s how the global numbers are divvyed up (give or take a few KH/s).

Why would the SHA-256 settle for so little? Do they really have much choice? Anywhere else to go? . . . instead of turning their ASICs into very expensive paperweights . . .

By these numbers, Scrypt ASIC is still hauling them in (on a relative basis) and have a long way to go before falling below breakeven (when using the 7 watt gridseed as electricity cost basis, even more so).

So, is this issue a non-issue with respect to SHA-256? Or still an issue since they are so desperate as to keep mining when it’s a losing proposition and throwing good money after bad?

These numbers suggest to me that the Scrypt ASIC continues to be an issue - until their numbers grow sufficiently so as to reduce their per MH/s rewards below profitability. Just where that equilibrium lay is still an unknown, but we can be quite sure it’s at some lower price rather than a higher price . . . as long as ASIC is part of the picture (unless their numbers and crowd herding gets as crazy as the SHA-256 crowd).

BTW, what are the components of your SKEIN GPU rig?

Didn't hear anything about the negotiations with the brick&mortar stores. Did you make any progress there or is this on standby until you fixed the flaws, Jared?
A lot of this is occurring in the background as we speak. Do to NDA's etc we cannot give any more details until we are ready to publicly release the information. Good things lay ahead. Smiley

Our primary focus right now getting the multi-algo update out. We have now successfully compiled different algos and we are in the process of testing them.

What do you all think about these five algos as a unique DigiByte combo?

1) Sha256
2) Scrypt
3) Skein (2nd runner up NIST competition)
4) Keccack (considered to be the most secure algo after winning NIST competition as SHA-3 finalsit)
5) x11 (Miners seem to really love it)

Which five algos would you like to see?

After making sure the Myriad set up worked for DigiByte we decided it would be best if we did something unqie if possible. What are all your thoughts?

There have been some very good suggestions on here recently. Thank you all for contributing!

Since there will be a replacement for the algos, do we have a new estimated launch date?  I was just curious if we should expect to be ready today or next week sometime or what.

/waiting with great anticipation.
We wont have it ready today, we are working hard to get it done as quickly as possible. We also have been working hard on some new developments this week that we cannot release the details of yet. Smiley

Have you seen this? https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=652849.0 I'm getting a clear double the hashrate for only 28% more electricity cost on my 7950's.

Oh, and, how about that aidbit wallet? Have you taken a look at that?

I saw that special miner awhile ago but I haven't looked at exactly what it does.  I use 14.6 drivers on my 280x rigs so I wasn't too excited about going back to 13.12 just for the one coin when I was mining x11 so much due to heat profitability of X11.  Why does that miner only work for certain pools, I never got that, is it because Groestl uses a different stratum?  I remember Danbi working on it quite a bit when Diamond switched algos.  So the big question is, with all the speed improvements that this special miner has, will it work with the digibyte pool?

I haven't looked at the aidbit wallet yet other than read the description of what it does, hopefully ill have time this weekend to download the wallet and play with it.  Sounds like it has a lot of features I was thinking of.

You've got the switches for all three of the groestl flavors: groestlcoin, myriadcoin-groestl, and diamond (but I don't see the diamond files in the github zip . . . the first two are the most interesting anyway). I highly recommend it. Just be prepared to rollback just in case - but I'd take a look at how things go with the 14.6 drivers first anyway. It's a standalone, alongside install . . .

Hey, that wallet is cutting edge. Check it out. It really is a one click install and one click miner. I had a free moment this afternoon to take a quick look, and all I can say is: Impressive.

Wow, the aidbit wallet was one of the simplest ways to get mining ever.

Download, install, I started mining while the wallet was still syncing. Not one issue.

We need something like this for sure!

We will check into this. Thank you for sharing!

wallet is up to date.
I didn't send them anywhere. I just mined them.

I mined these myself at launch, and then archived the wallet after that.
I then periodically sync, but this particular case, the sync was not done for a while.
Once I updated the client, my coins vanished.

Have you tried re-indexing the wallet? Or opening with the -rescan option?

You might even try deleting the blockchain folder and letting it re-download. Sometimes your local blockchain database can get corrupted.

http://altexplorer.net/address/DCjdizkQsj7mkcgvTA2WYKEkAm1huUs393

This shows there was 1 transaction in and 1 transaction out. Was that the address you sent the coins to originally?
The coins from that transaction were mined after we hard forked at block 67,200. You can see here that the coins began accruing at block 70,154: http://explorer.cryptopoolmining.com/address/DPAXn5EkvbG2bEiMynbofn6tdLN9pDiavb

Since you did not update until recently it is very possible those coins were mined on the old, incorrect chain. Which mining pool were you using

To update everyone on multi-algo:

We have the myriad 5 algo implementation working as expected but we are trying to improve that implementation even more by using other algos with better mining performance for GPU users. Will keep you all posted.

Does this mean there will be more than 5 algos or will one of the new algos replace one of the 5?
We will keep with the 5 algo approach but we may switch out some one the algos for new ones. We are testing that as we speak.

PM me if you need hashing power, I can point one of my rigs at it for testing.
Thank you for the offer! Will keep it in mind! Smiley

This shows there was 1 transaction in and 1 transaction out. Was that the address you sent the coins to originally?

I could\would have... but no one from the dev team has bothered to respond to why my coins went missing after a simple blockchain sync.
so, no positive support from me.

We just read your message. The last time we forked DigiByte a few people did not update and continued to mine on the old chain. Did you get coins from someone who mined on the old chain? Or did you yourself mine on the old chain before updating your wallet?

Have you tried re-opening the wallet with the -rescan command to re-index your block chain?

Christian Buchner is the main developer behind the NVidia miner CCMiner.  He is in my mind a genius.  Between the release of the 750ti and his continual upgrades of ccminer I believe he single handedly put NVidia back in the game.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=167229.0

Don't quote me on this but I am pretty sure he wrote the kernel for maxcoin and integrated it into cc miner....he knows how to maximize NVidia cards so that the algorithms are the most efficient they can be.

As for reddcoin, here is the white paper on POSV

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=167229.0

I would also recommend checking out their announcement here.

http://www.reddit.com/r/reddCoin/comments/2b33e5/posv_release_candidate_2_chess_and_future/

POSV should go into production in 2-3 weeks.

Their main developer  laudney is quite smart and built POSV from the ground up.  I don't know much of the technical aspects of how POSV works but hopefully that whitepaper and google will get you in the right direction.

I happened to find the github repository for it, check it out.  I have linked directly to the POSV branch.

https://github.com/reddcoin-project/reddcoin/tree/posv
Thank you for sharing all the info! Just read the POSV white paper, it is very interesting. We still feel multi-algo, decentralized mining is the best long term solution at this point. We want to make absolutely sure this update sets us up for a long term successful mining future.

In order to achieve a CPU only algorithm would it have to be extremely memory intensive to thwart asics?  I am just thinking on a technical standpoint, how would it happen. ReddCoin is going to start their Proof of Stake Velocity ( PosV ) soon which is supposed to be cpu only via having the wallet open.  I wonder how they are doing that.  What keeps Christian Buchner from creating a gpu miner for a cpu coin?

I personally think HR has a great idea, I just don't know how to achieve it.

Just thinking out loud..

1) you would want the number of coins in the wallet to be part of the mining process / reward.  This way if someone were to use a botnet then it really wouldn't be worth it because they would have to create hundreds of wallets for very little reward.

2)If you made something memory intensive, you could check how much system memory exists then allocate a certain percentage of it.  This way, botnets of really old machines wouldn't be as effective and the industry would have a hard time creating gpu / asics for the algorithm.

Do you have any more info on Reddcoin's update? Also, who is Christian Buchner?

There might be algos out there that if put in the might combination might make this possible. Very thought provoking suggestions. Thank you for sharing!

HR,

The varying block # rewards for multi algo is a great idea! We have been testing other algos including x11, NIST 5 and keccack. Just as you mentioned, we feel the absolute key to making all this fair is allowing decentralized mining for everyone, no matter how big of a budget they have. That is what brought most of us into cryptocurrencies to begin with, myself included. Received your email and am still getting around to replying by the way.

Thanks again for contributing your thoughts!

HR,
Are you a miner? What do you believe will be the impact of the multi algo on DGB?

YC

I'm a miner, and long term investor (with what I mine). Unfortunately, the "long term" investment part of the picture hasn't been working out so well (unless you have been doing what the majority seem to have been doing by moving all their mining proceeds to BTC).

Hopefully that will change, and I think the multi algo approach is a move in the right direction – even if not in the short run, it still looks like the best bet to me in the long run. We need look no further than early 2014's *star* coin, DOGE, to see where immobility in the face of the advent of ASIC will get you.

That having been said, I think there's still much more to be done if one really wants to take a coin "mainstream" and achieve wide scale adoption. One of the key points I've been focusing on as of late is the necessity to avoid being "just another coin". It seems to me that most devs are caught in the 'gimmick' trap where they are concerned with partnered vendors, cute promotions, and the like. It certainly looks like everyone is putting the cart before the horse and I've come to the conclusion that the best advice I could give any developer would be to stay true to time tested business principles and center efforts on first producing a world class product and then letting the future take care of itself as the world beats a path to your door (as the old saying goes). Remember, even Ronald McDonald needed a good hamburger and fries to stay alive.

The world class product in this case would be: Coin - Wallet - Network (meaning officially sponsored P2Pools) in that order.

I also think that the playing field needs to be further ‘handicapped’ to help the small guy be more competitive - IMO this is central to the world class product itself and eventually being able to take it “mainstream".

Here's a reproduction of something on that subject that I recently posted on another thread that I’ve adapted for DGB:

-----------------------------------------o-----------------------------------------

Here’s a Radical [Not So Novel] Idea (please don’t laugh)

Would you be interested hearing an idea that could take DGB ballistic and worldwide (in the truest sense of the word)? Well, sit back and read on if you answered yes.

This is an idea that could really cause DGB to go 'viral'. Can you imagine people from all over the world automatically mining DGB on startup of their PC? What could possibly get millions of people all over the world (including the underdeveloped world) doing that?

Let’s step back for some background and start out by remembering and taking into account some of my logical anti-ASIC arguments (I haven’t been too bad with my predictions in recent months either) and then move forward going one step further by looking at the opposite end of the spectrum.

Just like at one end of the spectrum we have an ever more concentrated and centralized network in combination with price under serious pressure, at the other end we also have an authentic widely distributed network with a stable and generally rising price, and if hardware specialization leads to the first, then, the opposite, namely, hardware generalization, should logically lead to the second.

Economies of scale are generally a good thing when referring to competitive markets; the only problem exists when those markets become concentrated (centralized) in a few hands, and then economies of scale can work against the common good. We need look no further than the fiat banking system to see what eventually happens.

One of the most important ideas at the heart of the crypto ethic was the idea that decentralization was key for creating a viable 'alternative' storage of wealth that could compete with the traditional fiat system.

Have we by some chance become sidetracked with our obsessions for short term profit? What with, hey, we’ve even got a website dedicated to this extreme distraction. What’s the name? Oh, yeah, here it is, Crypto Pump of course (how could it be named anything else?). http://cryptopump.com Was this what we all had in mind when starting out with cryptocurrencies?

Decentralization is all about making something as available as possible to as many people as possible. Are we really going in the right direction to accomplish that by favoring specialized and centralized economies of scale? Okay, a large market cap would be great for PR, but how long lived would it be if it’s not built on a real foundation. Selling out to short term specialization and centralization is nothing more than assured short term gain in exchange for long term pain.

So, if centralized specialization leads to ruin, then generalization, or decentralization as it were, should lead to system health and vitality – exactly what is desired for a solid and authentic vehicle for storage of wealth. And just what do I mean by “generalization”? I’m referring to making something as “generally” available as possible, and not just in words, but in real deeds as well. It’s one thing to say that even CPUs can mine, and it’s quite another altogether to say (and make real) that they can do so competitively (and we all know that the little guy can only be competitive in a “little guy world” where the rules are fair and designed to protect the little guy, and not one where major competitors are swallowing up what little guys are still left).

Have you guessed where I’m going with this?

CPU mining that is just as profitable as GPU mining, and also with ASIC?

Had you guessed?

Yes, CPU on par with ASIC!

If you do that, if you make DGB the cryptocurrency that everyone who owns a computer could competitively mine (seriously now, everyone), you’d have millions of users all over the world configuring their DGB wallets to launch on system startup!

Okay, there are some details to work out, like having a launch on boot setting in the wallet, and, of course, the automatic mine on launch 'plug and play' coding as well.

The wallet would need pre-configured mining parameters so that the new user could mine with a simple click, either solo, or better yet, with official DGB worldwide P2Pools (worldwide really meaning worldwide with scores of active nodes all over the world).

The pre-configured, in wallet, miner would only mine using the CPU, or CPU equivalent that would be limited by a throttling mechanism that either matched the most powerful end-user CPU, or an average of the most common CPUs in active use (meaning that it would be possible to mine with a GPU miner, but never at a hashrate that exceeded the CPU throttling level per address, and never independent or outside of the wallet).

Rewards would look something like this:

Throttled Qubit CPU pre-configured wallet restricted mining = 4000 coins per block
Groestl = 450 coins per block
Skein = 450 coins per block
SHA-256 = 50 coins per block
Scrypt = 50 coins per block

And, with that, you'd put DGB on the world map as the first truly fair cryptocurrency in the world where everyone who owns a computer is looked at funny if their DGB wallet isn’t running 'in the background'.

How’s that for an idea for taking DGB mainstream?

You’re right. This would be even beyond mainstream!

Isn’t that what we really had in mind when getting involved in cryptos? Wink

-----------------------------------------o-----------------------------------------

Okay, it's not exactly a level playing field. If you look at the payout numbers closely, you'll notice how the GPU still has a very handsome advantage over CPU, and ASIC over GPU, but it is fair[er] FOR ALL since the less specialized miners would be made more competitive thereby giving them more incentive to mine (and really get emotionally attached to DGB in the process) while at the same time technological advances (R&D, innovation and capital investment) would also still be rewarded.

-----------------------------------------o-----------------------------------------

In short, to answer your question in no uncertain terms, I'm not sure. If you look at MYR's price over recent weeks, the market seems to be telling us that multi algo is not enough, so I wouldn't get my hopes set too high. On the other hand, like I said here yesterday, having a real face with a very positive track record behind DGB might be the difference (I may be more or less on target with this, but Jared has steered the ship without incident so far, and I would think that it’s a fairly good bet to think he will continue to do the same by listening to the community, consulting with investors, promoting at conventions, etc., and, ultimately, making the right decisions for DGB).

Gone are the days when we would just point our miners at the most profitable coin and walk away (and don’t get the wrong idea, I’m not a “farmer”, I’m just a little guy, like most – you can count my miners with the fingers of one hand). Gone are the days when you could rack up windfall ‘profits’ mining DOGE (oh, how I wish I’d sold some of those earlier on). Gone are the days when time was on our side (now we’ve all got to make some serious bets very soon – if we haven’t already – since I very much doubt the majority of cryptos will ever get off the life support they’re currently on).

Personally, after having made the rounds in a serious, direct and businesslike manner (here on BitCoinTalk, on other major forums, individual coin forums, a few mining forums, and the like – here as ‘HR’, elsewhere as someone else), my conclusion is that the crypto world is full of kids and/or scammers, neither of which is a recipe for success. Add to that a preponderance of incompetence – not that these people are incompetent per se, but that they are in way over their heads – to the point where you almost want to throw up your hands in desperation and give up on the crypto dream by throwing in the towel altogether. Some will likely blunder along picking up the rear and survive as secondary, niche coins, but the real winners will be few and far between, and I think one of them will be DGB.

And so my days of crypto-globe trotting have come to an end as I’ve made the decision that DGB is the best bet out there for both major price appreciation and long term success – as I've said, based mainly on its track record and the seriousness and integrity of its visible founder. As such, this is where I’m staying, again, not sure at all mind you, but considering all the facts that I’ve gathered these last 6 months, this is the coin that I think has the highest probability for long term success . . . and price should follow . . . if not sooner, then later. Wink

This thread has no dev input which is not normal. We need a go between or an active dev to set people minds at rest.

Things that really matter take time in this industry. BK is a good man and he has every intention of seeing this through. We helped start NAUT, we have been working on our own multi-algo fork but we know things are being worked on for NAUTI, and all of this takes some testing as we are sure they are doing their best with POS. If all else fails we will be here to support NAUT.

Of all other alt coins we believe in this one. Things are being taken care of with BKs resources. Rome was not built in a day. If you want to learn how to program, go to lynda.com, they have a wonderful crash course in a lot of languages for $20 per month and you can learn some coding.

More importantly write the NY regulators about your concerns with their proposed regulations. Yes, we need regulation to move forward, but not like they propose. Right now you have the chance to be much more active than just supporting one coin.... support all of us.

We stand together.... or hang separately.

To all DigiByte users, make sure to withdraw all DGB from @AustinGlobalX before they close on July 31st:  https://agx.io/

Would anybody mind sharing the letter they send/sent to their reps about the NYDFC proposals? I'm not sure I could explain in adequate terms how some of the proposed regs are unenforceable or nonsensical for the crypto platform. I think I can handle the parts about information collecting well enough but not being a tech guy the nuts and bolts of it isn't my forte.

Haven't sent any letters as I don't live in the NY (or in the U.S.A for that matter) but this is quite a good article imo that you might want to add a link to in the letter:

Great article, thanks for sharing!
