I hold both XMR and BBR (until something better may arise) - I don't see any reason for hostility between the two projects...

There isn't any hostility between XMR and BBR. Risto was simply saying that BBR (or any other cryptonote) could be just as vulnerable as they all came from the same codebase.

Im embarrased right now to own a lot of Monero. The Monero fanbois are such douchbags right now when it comes to BBR.  Oh, yeah, BBR MUST have the same vunerabilities. Dudes need to worry about their own house and stop talking about BBR.

Anyone who talks about Monero "fanbois" being negative toward BBR is spreading FUD and fueling a fire that largely doesn't exist. CZ and XMR devs communicate regularly. Quit attacking strawmen.

OR that BBR insider(s) are behind the attack.

Probably you both want more cheap BBR lol

Someone should ask Poloniex to freeze BBR trading too (IMHO).
I did in the trollbox..

EDIT: Tweeted to hitbtc too

Do they have BBR there?

It looks like Mintpal and HitBTC are both still actively trading as well as withdraws and deposits are open.

Trading I can't do anything about. We've tried to contact those exchanges but haven't been able to.

However, I strongly recommend that you do not attempt to do deposits or withdraws

The block chain is a mess right now and there is no way to know what would happen to your coins.

Do not engage in any transactions at this time

I got in touch with freeworm and he says he froze XMR at bter
Let me know when it is all clear to resume

James

Signed:
James, the concerned, helpful helper!

I got also in touch with HitBtc, urging them to stop withdrawals and trading. Further, I offered my time to help the Monero devs. I also decided to keep the options markets open so you can still hedge (although I am afk for the next 6 hours mostly).

This thread and poloniex trollbox are very full of otherwise not so prominent or active people that are now speaking doom concerning XMR. If they don't short it themselves (difficult), they either get paid for the FUD, or want the price to tank to buy back lower. Otherwise it does not make sense.

It has even been mentioned that BBR should increase in price as a result from an attack towards XMR code (which BBR itself also uses). This proposal is ridiculous, because either it has the same vulnerability and the attack was just directed to the more prominent coin, or BBR will suffer the same attack soon or be already suffering it without even noticing, OR that BBR insider(s) are behind the attack.

Note to newcomers: BBR is the only (non-XMR) cryptonote coin that is not conclusively proven to be lead by the original CN scamteam Wink

Any way I got in touch with XMR devs, result:
- no rollback necessary
- everything is asked to be halted because a non-standard block got to the blockchain and reason needs to be figured out
- When I asked "what exactly makes this a problem from a client side?", he said "because it appears to have caused a fork thereafter - we're busy investigating"

Are you a programmer now? Did you see the code?

Better let the experts (like Todd or Anonymint) have an opinion on this..

I just checked, and there is one "goto err" used in EC_KEY_regenerate_key() in the current codebase. But regardless, the Cryptonote codebase is far worse. For one thing, writing it in C with pointer arithmetic is just nuts.
Can you check BBR too? I know your time is super precious but...

BBR is Cryptonote, which uses gotos for error handling in a bunch of places. Pretty standard technique on C. Dangerous of course, but using C is dangerous in a whole lot of ways. (in most cases)
Thanks! (Damn Gotos @2014  Angry )

Ah thanks for the correction, I remember this coming up in a "bitcoin code is bad" discussion last year or something and thought the goto was in the code.

Thanks Peter.

I'm sure the Bytecoin/CryptoNote designers also understand the issue(it was probably them who launched the attack).

BBR is likely safe due to the fact that there doesn't seem to be any bad blood between the Bytecoin/CryptoNote designers and crypto_zoidberg.

Either way when zoidberg wakes up he will handle it all.
It is not a matter of if they attack BBR but if the flaw (and bad code quality) is present in BBR code too.

Wary.
Don't forget that SatoshiDice started in April 2012 and kept growing until it was doing about 70% of the volume a year later. Each bet was a transaction pair in the blockchain, and some people were even using bots! Fee increases and SD internalization got rid of most of its volume by about July 2013. So the growth since then is much more of a "real world" business flow. Still, some spam-like volume coming from betting sites.

One person's doggie poop is another veterinarian's GDP. Imo, when we start killing txs, we've lost the plot (of the internet paradigm).

The tx's weren't killed. They were internalized within SD, off-chain, how it should have been done at the start. GDP remained and SD was sold for 120,000 BTC.

Fair point, but I will counter that if there are real txs where parties can trade their balance with any other person in the universe, then off-chain is not the same jungle nor the same network effect.
Nailed it!

This is NOT decentralised though - problem is that we need micropayments in a networked economy and BTC is hostile for this.

Here is there is really not much to do, other than chase girls, eat fruit, or be on the computer.
It seems a helpful venue then, to focus one's priorities.  You have made the Philippines much more attractive to me than I had thought possible.  Despite, or perhaps in part because of, the death squads.

Those "73 stakeholders" who were awarded all the Nxt coins that would ever exist were quite possibly 1 developer + 72 sock puppets.

That would conveniently explain why the NXT price did not stall sooner when it was being pumped, unlike for example the Monero price that is an actual product of market mechanism between thousands of actors.
The price of NXT is constantly trying to pass for good the 0.0001 barrier and always collapses back to the 0.00005-0.00007 area because the whales (like me in the past) always sell big there. This has happened 3 or 4 times.

Check the DGEX chart history...

I can assure you I am not a sock puppet (neither guys like Pouncer, Neer, bybitcoin, etc).
Criticism is great but stupid arguments are not - I thought you were a serious guy...

DISCLAIMER: I own 0 NXT at the moment..

The image of Mr. E and KootieCoon as Nxt Superheroes was supposed to set a non-serious tone for my last post.  It was hyperbole.  I don't actually believe that all of the original Nxt stakeholders were sock puppets, nor do I actually believe that KootieCoon looks like Cartman and wears a racoon costume while frantically refreshing his browser as he waits for an opportunity to strike.

The broader point I was making stands up to scrutiny: there's no way to avoid sock puppet purchases with an IPO.  Questions about the legitimacy of the distribution will always remain.
I was a bit harsh, apologies Smiley

You are right about a percentage of sock puppets, NEM proves this and personally I suspect that about 200-300M NXT were used from the developers to protect the network (and probably won't be sold for a long time)..

I have no proof for the above claim.

In Technical Analysis all the breaks must have a margin (say 1% of the price - which means 5 $ now) in order to be valid.

The current price is seeing at the right of the chart as a green rectangle (479.95 $ now).

Thanks!

Glass half empty
Glass half full
conveniently left out 5th i guess.. Wink
A little too convenient. For shame.

Well well well.  If it isn't the dynamic duo: Brilliant Mr. E and his sidekick Kootiecoon.  How come you guys always come out together?  Are you like Nxt superheroes waiting for an opportunity to pump your POS coin?

Nxt is over BTW.  It had a brief moment of glory but the market is waking up to the problem with POS--especially those that were distributed by "IPOs."  Those "73 stakeholders" who were awarded all the Nxt coins that would ever exist were quite possibly 1 developer + 72 sock puppets.

What is the exchange you are tracking the price of?
BTC-e, just saw it!

Should we wait for the exact price you mention plus a certain amount (eg +5$) to be more sure it is a real upwards break?

And what is this exact price in your chart for today because I am not sure I can see it right (probably somewhere $480)?

Thank you in advance.

Gold getting decimated.

Major breakout; to the downside.
Is there something like bitcoinwisdom for Gold prices?
