2141  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Are there play and pay later casinos? on: May 17, 2023, 10:03:24 AM
I've only seen it in the movies when some big guy comes to the casino and gets a loan to gamble, but everyone knows who he is and that he can pay it. Maybe it happens in real life, but for mere mortals it will never be an option, because realistically it would be really stupid on the part of any casino. Gambling should be understood as entertainment for what it really is - and not as a way to get rich, although rare individuals will be lucky enough to have that happen to them.
2142  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [Collection Thread] Series and films in which Bitcoin (or Altcoins) appear on: May 17, 2023, 09:46:31 AM
Bitcoin was mentioned in the TV series Salvation season 2, although I'm not entirely sure, I think it was episode 6, and it was mentioned in episodes after that. In any case, if you want to see what a world looks like in which people are fighting to prevent an asteroid from hitting the earth, and at the same time there is an attempted coup in the White House and Bitcoin is involved.

2143  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Recovery - Send your (encrypted) recovery phrase to 3rd parties entities on: May 17, 2023, 09:03:12 AM
The trust is currently broken. Ledger says anyone can opt-out of the service, but how can we verify that the backdoor wasn't there the whole time?
~snip~

You've got to be kidding? The trust was broken from the moment when hundreds of thousands of data of their customers were hacked and made public, which included literally everything from full names, residential addresses, mobile phones and e-mails. Anyone who continued to trust that company after that only exposed themselves to additional risk, because as it turned out with this move, they (Ledger) obviously have a way to extract every generated seed, and now they just publicly admitted it.

As far as I'm concerned, I think that every HW from Ledger is compromised and that you should stop using it as soon as possible.
2144  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Things that still make feel awkward with some online casinos on: May 16, 2023, 03:11:32 PM
Why are some online gambling platforms having high withdrawal fee? I know Bitcoin recently has a high transaction fee but that's no more right now, some online casinos are still asking for 5$ per transaction when it should be 1$ or less.

The situation with mempool can change at any moment, and no one wants to pay fees to someone else out of their own pocket, and obviously not to constantly adjust them to the current situation, which would certainly be the most fair. If you look at what is currently happening with mempool, you can see that the current medium priority fee is around $3, and in some blocks even more - which again depends on the number of incoming transactions and the number of blocks (4 blocks were found in the last 5 minutes).

Not just only Bitcoin withdrawal, even coins with very low transaction fee, isn't this robbery?
~snip~

Maybe we can talk about something called a service fee, as is the case with CEX. In that case, the price of withdraw does not depend only on the price of the transaction, but also on the service you use.
2145  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What will happen to a wallet when the wallet company closes on: May 16, 2023, 02:32:23 PM
The eternal dilemma: on one hand, if you keep it in a third party's custodial service, then you have to trust on him, but you should know that one of our mottos is "don't trust, verify". On the other hand, if you custody yourself your keys, you are responsible for their destiny and you won't be able to blame on anyone if you lose them and your coins get lost forever.

A part of those who invest in Bitcoin will still blame some wallets like Electrum in case they happen to lose their funds, especially if we remember that very cunning phishing attack that used a vulnerability inside the wallet itself to display a link to a fake wallet. However, in the end it is always much easier if you can blame someone else, and I believe that this is one of the reasons why many people still believe in custodial wallets and do not want to take responsibility.

~snip~
Bankrupt Crypto Exchange QuadrigaCX Will Start Interim Distribution for Some Users, EY Says (2023).

You will only can wait for luck if they shut down their service. Not all will have partial repayment, compensation like QuadrigaCX.

This is surprising news considering all that has been presented over the years and the Canadian authorities' conclusion that Cotten "gambled" around $250 million of client funds on various investments. The last part of the article mentions some 100 BTC from cold wallets that were transferred last year, but how is that possible if they claimed that only Cotten had access to those same cold wallets Huh

Yup, it sounds like you might have gotten yourself into a bit of a mess. When you download software from sketchy or untrustworthy sources, like cracked versions, there's a high chance you've picked up a virus or some other nasty malware. Disabling your antivirus while doing that makes it even riskier. Why would you even take that risk?
~snip~

For the reason that AV blocked him from downloading and installing that infected software, which is actually what such programs do. Anyway, if you don't know what you're doing, you shouldn't be doing it, because in the end you not only have a direct financial loss, but you unfairly accuse others and waste their time and yours because of your own stupidity.
2147  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: OG Bitcoin Wallet Addresses Suddenly Active - Are they being hacked? on: May 16, 2023, 10:34:39 AM
When I see a Senior member asking about such things, I wonder what these people were doing on the forum all that time and why they didn't learn some basics... Although what else can you expect from someone who goes to the gym and meets people there who know all the world's secrets Roll Eyes

I just checked my old wallet addresses and no one hacked them, am I the only one or are there others who haven't been hacked? Shocked
2148  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Studies on the Bitcoin Generalized Stock-to-Flow (S2F-G) Model: (i) Error-bars ( on: May 15, 2023, 01:11:30 PM
All those models were somewhat amusing to me, but today they are not even that anymore, and not only because they turned out to be wrong, but because over time one simply gets tired of all these speculations. Even without any model, every optimist expects that BTC price will overtake the next ATH after the next halving, but all the numbers are nothing more than mere speculation.

Some may agree that $170k is a nice number, but to me it somehow seems modest, because many expect much more from Bitcoin in the next 4+ years.

I didn't play in the casino. What a nonsense this site is not protected at all, I collected those satoshis for more than 6 months and they just disappeared

Protected from whom exactly? Maybe you need to ask yourself if someone close to you had access to the device where you use freebitco and took advantage of your moment of inattention to gamble the entire amount you had?
2150  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What will happen to a wallet when the wallet company closes on: May 15, 2023, 10:15:16 AM
We never trust companies that say we should keep our BTC in their custodial service, because that is exactly the opposite of what everyone should do. Any non-custodial crypto wallet that is also open source will be a good choice, whether it's about generating a backup through a seed or extracting a private key that you will then store safely, preferably in multiple copies.

Never trust companies, because they are only there for profit, proven countless times and will continue to be proven in the future.
2151  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Third graders and Bitcoin on: May 15, 2023, 09:51:06 AM
I had a math class with third graders of which we discussed money I told them about virtual and real money of which I was very shocked and happy that they had knowledge about Bitcoin.
~snip~

I think, and I have written this several times on this forum, that children at that age should not be exposed to such things in schools - but some will say that they have already been exposed through the media and that they may have heard about these things from their parents or siblings. Therefore, the problem may not be that they know that this technology exists, but that some of them might start using something for which they are not ready enough, and children at that age should not have any burden of financial responsibility or even making a profit.

What I'm interested in in this particular case is whether the teacher has permission from the school/parents to talk to the children about such things as part of math lessons?
2152  Economy / Gambling / Re: Sportsbook offering VAR market on: May 15, 2023, 09:22:26 AM
~snip~

As I already wrote, people are the weakest link, no matter how good a technology is, it can be misused and used selectively. If I were in the place of the decision makers, I would seriously consider changing the VAR rules so that each team has x number of requests during the match when they can ask for a check. Something similar to what existed (or still exists in tennis), and I think it would be much fairer than the way it is arranged today.

After all, if FIFA wanted to play a fair game, it wouldn't have set things up this way, but we all know that they and fairness don't go in the same sentence.
2153  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: BRC-20 needs to be removed on: May 14, 2023, 03:10:46 PM
Hello everyone. I'm not an expert at all but did purchase about 0.7 BTC worth of ORDI earlier this week, so am very interested in this discussion.

Maybe people like you are the reason why projects like this don't fail much faster than they should, because after all, money drives everything, and too many people obviously have too much money to invest in various tokens or some new invention, believing that it is "that something" that will make them rich. You yourself say that you are not an expert, but obviously 0.7 BTC is not a problem for you, your money, your risk.

There is a clear and present danger that ethereum will usurp bitcoin as the number 1 coin, in terms of market cap. I am of the opinion that if this happens, bitcoin will slowly fade away into insignificance. I hope that I'm wrong about that, but my concerns about it meant that I was initially delighted to hear about brc-20/ordinals.

I've been reading and hearing about "Flippening" for almost 10 years, since the existence of ETH and its owner's obsession to flip BTC, but it hasn't happened yet, despite the fact that the max supply of ETH is constantly changing and actually looks like it will be infinite. Fortunately, it's not all about money, as most people see it, but there is also something about trust, as some have already mentioned before me.

With all the changes that ETH has made since its inception and with all the changes that follow, I wonder how anyone still believes in such fairy tales?

I don't know if or how it can happen, but my opinion right now is that bitcoin developers must find ways to deflate the erc-20 bubble, or bitcoin will lose prominence at a rapid rate of knots.

It is my humble opinion that these ordinals will destroy themselves sooner or later, or rather when they run out of money, that is, when people realize what kind of nonsense this is all about. In addition, bitcoin developers are not the ones to point the finger at and say "fix it", the game is run by the miners and the only thing that matters to them is to make a profit, and do you think they want to kill the goldfish that fulfills all their wishes?
2154  Economy / Services / Re: [Price-check] price of signature space of an average hero rank poster on: May 14, 2023, 02:23:53 PM
I also do not think that the discrepancy between a Hero Member and a legendary member in terms of payment is necessary.
Some campaign managers pair the pay while some don't.

Not that it is too important to me, but I would personally make a difference in the pay rates for Hero and Legendary members, because the difference in activity required for these two ranks is significant (480 compared to the minimum of 775 activity points), and now that we have merits no one can say that it is equally easy (difficult) to earn 500 or 1000 merits.

My opinion is therefore that each rank has its own "value" in terms of the time and effort someone invested to achieve it. However, as you say, it is the decision of each manager.
2155  Other / Off-topic / Re: Bitcoin memes on: May 14, 2023, 01:45:18 PM
I don't think this topic is relevant to the Meta board.

Definitely inappropriate for this board, and besides there is at least one main meme topic that unfortunately turned into an invalid image message.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5232907.0

It would be wise if you shift it to the Bitcoin Discussion board.

Why do you think it would be a suitable board? It is true that there is too much garbage there and that I counted over 60 topics that I would have otherwise reported as "low quality topic" or "posted in wrong board", but I read that artificial intelligence will do that job, although as far as I can see spam is flourishing in the respective board.

In my opinion, this topic has only two possible options - the first is to move it to Off-topic, and the second is to delete it.
2156  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Eurovision Song Contest 2023 discussion: Who is your favorite? on: May 14, 2023, 11:19:59 AM
Isreal - they're getting hyped much, but at least for me it's nothing special, though Noa Kirel is really beautiful

I also think that she is certainly one of the most beautiful singers who performed this year at the Eurovision, but that is not surprising considering that she comes from a country that has some of the most beautiful women in the world.

Croatia - song that you can love or hate. Personally I liked it a lot, but they're not going to win

I completely agree with that, and I think that many did not understand the message of the song at all, and that obviously resulted in such a small number of votes and a low place in the final ranking. People are obviously fed up with war, and they don't want it in any context, least of all in a competition like this.

Congratulations to Sweden and their singer who managed to win this competition again.
2157  Economy / Gambling / Re: Sportsbook offering VAR market on: May 14, 2023, 11:07:27 AM
VAR existed to make a game free and fair, to eliminate and diminish completely the act of cheating, and to penalize any breach of the game's regulations.
~snip~

VAR is just a technology that again depends on the people who use it, and if the people (referees) are corrupt or don't understand the rules, that technology is completely useless, and in some cases it even destroys the game. When I say "destroys", I especially mean goals scored that are then canceled due to offside by just a few millimeters, and at the same time some very dubious decisions are not reviewed at all with the help of VAR because that is what the judges in the VAR room decide.

Personally, I am not surprised that VAR has also appeared in sports betting, because bookmakers are just looking for a way to make even more money, no matter how meaningless some offers seem.
2158  Economy / Reputation / Re: How much longer will JollyGood take to reverse his feedback? on: May 14, 2023, 10:52:26 AM
This is the situation when someone complains about having negative or neutral feedback, and then something much worse happens to them - someone finds proof that the account was bought or that it is part of an alt farm in which at least one account has been permanently banned. Now, instead of that irrelevant tag, the OP has much more to worry about, especially if someone digs up hard evidence and paints him in red.
2159  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Looking for mutual business partner -- multiple crypto operations. on: May 14, 2023, 10:41:00 AM
I've been reading similar stories in the Project Development board over the years, everyone has ideas and is looking for partners, and then in the end it turns out that the partners get rich, and the developer is looking for a new partner, and that has no logic, right?

I'm uncertain if this post is allowed here, and if it's not I apologize mods and feel free to remove it.

It definitely does not belong in the Bitcoin discussion, and I would personally move it to Project Development or maybe Marketplace -> Services. You can do that yourself by searching for the "move button" and moving the topic to a new board.

The other struggle I have is I went blind several years ago, hence can no longer do front-end design work and is why the examples below need design work.

I know that blind people can use computers, but it's hard for me to imagine that you can do this kind of work considering your condition. Good luck with finding a new partner, and I hope you find someone who won't disappear with the money like the previous one.
2160  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: help with stuck txid on: May 13, 2023, 10:02:54 AM
hey i sended btc from 1 bet site to another sadly the first did sent with way to low fee now its stuck and i cant acclerate it or use viabtc cuz volume is over 0.5kb anybody who could help accleratae it ? thx in advance

I assume that gambling site has customer support, and the only option you have at the moment is to contact them and ask them nicely to increase the fee, because the transaction is marked with RBF. On the other hand, you can hope that you will be lucky with mempool because currently transactions are going through with about 30 sat/vB, and yours has 21 sat/vB.
