1261  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: El Salvador: bitcoin education in school curriculum on: September 08, 2023, 02:09:05 PM
~snip~
What do you all think about the methodology of adoption the El Salvador government is using to shovel bitcoin knowledge to every home through school students?
Will the goal be attainable and what does this mean for your own country?

As for the school program, I'm not surprised that the authorities are going in that direction, because they obviously realized that the only way to attract more people to Bitcoin is to start with the young population. What doesn't make sense is that you think that other governments in the world will go in the same direction just because El Salvador did it.

Imagine the situation if the US, the UK or the EU declare Bitcoin legal tender and start telling everyone to use it instead of national currencies. El Salvador replaced their national currency with $ 20+ years ago, so they are in a specific situation where they can experiment with Bitcoin.

Given that there is a main topic about El Salvador in the Bitcoin Discussion, I wonder why there is a new topic at all and why in Beginners & Help?
1262  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: When are we going to see the mempool empty again and 1sat/b confirmations? on: September 08, 2023, 01:24:45 PM
I stick to that old saying "never say never" so I won't even choose that option, and I also don't see how mempool would be cleaned of all those transactions in the next 3 months because there is no indication that the ordinal team will give up what they are doing. So I am left with the option that something positive will happen next year in this regard, although it does not quite fit in with the post effects of the halving and the possible approval of the spot BTC ETF in the US.

When we look at the situation realistically, it is easy to conclude that miners have nothing against everything because they earn more from fees, and as far as I understand, although it is technically possible to remove ordinals from the BTC blockchain, there is no reaction even from the BTC developers.

If I were to refer to the other topic, then I can agree that we have to slowly start getting used to the fees, which will be higher than before - but if we look at the value in fiat, the current $0.5 or $1, which the fees currently amount to, have less purchasing power than 3-4 years ago, considering inflation.
1263  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Tax obligation for personal Bitcoin traded to Fiat on: September 08, 2023, 01:01:23 PM
And who in your country makes tax returns for employees who receive a salary. In my country there is a concept of "tax agent". My employer performs this function and submits an income tax return for me and withholds tax from the salary, which he then transfers to the tax bank account. If every citizen did this on their own, but it is unprofitable to administer some taxes, because the costs for all actions will be more expensive than the tax itself.

Before, we all did it independently every year, we had to submit our tax returns by the specified date, but considering that the system has been digitized and networked, and everyone has insight into everything, everything goes automatically for most employees. Of course, there are certain categories of people who still have to fill out applications and go to tax offices, especially those who have other income.

Let's take the example of signature campaigns that pay every week, if I wanted to legalize that income, I would have to go to the tax office every week and fill out the forms because every such income must be reported within a few days of receipt.

~snip~
This system is also not perfect, but it saves a lot of time and money for the government.

We will hardly find a system that is perfect, but I am sure that the authorities will always look for a way to collect as many taxes as possible. That's how they regulated sports betting and the lottery in my country, every win is automatically reduced by the amount of tax, and there is no way you can win something without paying tax.

A 128 bits PIN should do the trick as well, as it is used to encrypt the seed on the chip.

(Please let me know if you think I'm wrong)

You are definitely right, considering that I am not a user of Trezor, I was not even aware that in 2021 they increased the maximum PIN length to even 50 digits, and they say that 39 digits is quite enough to protect the seed from hacking. It's actually a good thing for those who for some reason don't want to use a passphrase or maybe don't even know such an option exists - although it's an option they always recommend to advanced users.

We have a lot of cases where users wonder why they don't see anything on their balance even though they have the correct seed, and then it turns out that they actually added an extra password without which the seed creates a completely new set of addresses.

It might be a bit impractical to enter a PIN that's 39+ digits long, but for the average user it's probably easier than setting a passphrase.
1265  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: My decision on bitcoin on: September 08, 2023, 10:02:13 AM
I recently created a post asking if I should buy bitcoin now or wait for the dip...
~snip~

I didn't read your other topic, but what price would satisfy you personally as your entry point? No one can tell you with certainty to wait or to act now, because the price of BTC is almost completely unpredictable and can go in any direction. If you wait, you have a chance to buy cheaper, but also that the dip you are thinking about never happens.

In addition, as far as I understand, you plan to buy a small amount of BTC to start with, and then it doesn't matter too much whether the price is $20k or $25k - try to calculate it and you will see if there is a reason to wait or buy today.

What is perhaps more important in the whole story is whether you have taken care of the safe storage of what you are going to buy.
1266  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: September 08, 2023, 09:40:06 AM
@AlcoHoDL, Trezor vulnerability is something that has been known for years, there was a lot of discussion about it in the technical discussion boards, but luckily every user can protect himself by setting a passphrase, and there is also another option, which is the use of an SD card.

When it comes to passphrase, the conclusion is that they should be at least 37 characters long :

A physical access to a Trezor One, Trezor T, Keepkey, or B-wallet allows an attacker to extract the 12/24-words within a few minutes using a low-cost setup (~100$), with a very high reproducibility (we had 100% success). We finally proved it can be fully automated allowing anyone to use it in case someone would sell the Extraktor box (similar to old Playstation hacks). This attack can not be fixed. The only mitigation is to use a strong passphrase: we recommend 37 random characters to maintain the same level of security.

For those who are interested in how to protect themselves additionally with the help of an SD card :

Trezor T (2.3.0) and Trezor One (1.9.0) firmware update

Also, one thing I forgot is that it is possible to set a so-called fake PIN that can be left as a bait, and if it is entered, all data from the hardware wallet will be deleted.

The Wipe Code
Another exciting new feature is the wipe code that acts as a “self-destruct PIN” that erases your Trezor if someone tries to unlock your device without your consent. If the wipe code is entered into any PIN entry dialog, then all private data will be immediately erased from your Trezor and the device will be reset to factory defaults. You can write the wipe code somewhere near your Trezor as a decoy PIN, so if someone tries to unlock the device without your consent, they will cause it to erase itself. You can also use the wipe code to reset your Trezor without using a host device. This update can be enabled on both Trezor models.
1267  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will ETFs pump BTC to $100k soon? on: September 07, 2023, 02:37:36 PM
~snip~
It seems to me that the hype around bitcoin ETF is overrated and it will not have a strong impact in the long run, but it will make a small contribution to the popularity of bitcoin, which, in general, is already good.

People start behaving very irrationally when they read about all these companies that manage trillions of dollars and are interested in Bitcoin, as if that means that all of their clients will suddenly go crazy for Bitcoin and start buying shares in these funds, just because such the possibility exists. We have such ETFs all over the world and generally there is very little interest in such investments, but apparently the US market is the only one on which most people expect to behave in the complete opposite way.

There should be no doubt that the news of the first approved BTC ETF in the US will resonate in the media space, because we saw the effect of the news that the court ruled in favor of Grayscale recently. Therefore, I think that the news will be sold very successfully, but the real question is how much the clients of these companies will actually be interested in such an ETF, and how will these same companies buy BTC on the market, given that it is an ETF that will have to buy BTC and store it in custodial wallets in order to be able to sell shares in the fund.

If these companies do these transactions via OTC, it is possible that the effect on the price will not be as strong as some think, and considering that BlackRock has signed a contract with Coinbase regarding the custody service - we already know from the past that the same company performed the purchase service for MicroStrategy via OTC.
1268  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Tomorrow you wake up, You got 50000$ in your hand. What will you do? on: September 07, 2023, 01:29:29 PM
Same with me: $26k = 1 BTC

Buy a huge ice cream bowl to survive heat: $8,50

Donate everything else for climate protection purposes.

Don't be naive, do you really think that those who supposedly deal with climate protection are really doing it? This is a group of incompetent people who found a way to live luxuriously from donations, while at the same time they did absolutely nothing to save this planet. After all, the greens from Greenpeace are even fighting against Bitcoin, if you missed it by any chance.

If I were you, I would invest in a store with homemade ice cream, the demand will be increasing anyway because the temperatures are rising - and you won't have to buy ice cream either Cool
1269  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Recovery - Send your (encrypted) recovery phrase to 3rd parties entities on: September 07, 2023, 01:01:28 PM
All those who left and those who are now leaving are irrelevant, it is known who pulls the main strings in the company and who invented a new service that once again put the company in an uncomfortable position. This is nothing new in the business world, when the CEO does something stupid, then he shifts the responsibility to those below him for what they say is the "welfare of the company".

~snip~
ceo Pascal Gauthier blamed an 'unintentional communication mistake' for the Recover melee, but also stressed the importance of key recovery for users who feel overwhelmed by key management.

He calls his stupid decision an "unintentional communication mistake", which means that he is actually saying that they were not capable of presenting a bad business move (from the perspective of anyone who knows what kind of risk we are talking about) as something revolutionary that will allow their mothers and grandmothers to use cryptocurrencies on "safe way".

I think that the exchange should become a tax agent and withhold traders' taxes and send data to the tax office. Then it will save a lot of time.

It would be the simplest for clients because they would not have to do absolutely anything when it comes to paying taxes (of course not in the case that CEX only sends data but automatically charges tax), but again the question arises why CEX would take on that part of the work when there are competent services for that. In addition, how to collect tax from clients from different countries, say within the EU, who use the same CEX, but have different tax rates?

So you really think $0.65 is too expensive for the average Joe? The one who cannot pay that amount for the transaction has much bigger problems than the current situation with mempool...

average joe is not part of the the hundreds of millions of "first worlders" but the multi billion populous of "3rd worlders"

you might want to check minimum wage amounts of the average joe

after all bitcoin was made for the unbanked not the elitists

I thought that Bitcoin was made for everyone who wants an alternative to the existing system, but it is not Satoshi's fault that those who are unbanked are still mostly the same ones who do not have access to the Internet, and therefore neither to Bitcoin.

Regarding the minimum wages, I know people work for only a few $ in Venezuela, or a few tens of $ in some African countries, but they can't even afford BTC, so I wonder if it makes a difference if the fee is $0.10 or $0.60?
1272  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: September 07, 2023, 10:12:26 AM
The thing I like about the Trezor is that even with the cheap version, you never have to type your passphrase into the computer. While I'm sure this method is not unhackable,  the process goes as thus.
~snip~

Well, that's actually one of the advantages offered by every hardware wallet, the seed that is generated during device initialization is your security backup, which you should store in a safe way and in case you need wallet recovery, enter the same seed in another hardware wallet.

Unfortunately, all Trezor models have an irreparable vulnerability that allows the extraction of seeds in case someone gets physical access to your device and has little knowledge and skills. However, each user can protect himself by adding a passphrase, which should have all the characteristics of any good password, which means that it is long enough and consists of random characters and letters.

How about if the admin filter some keywords(foul words), such that when you use them, you will be handed ban. Such as 7days ban, few days signature ban, read only mode etc. This will promote peaceful co-existence and curtail to the barest minimum any form of bullying, unfriendliness, acrimony or as the case may be.

That will never happen, no matter that you and some others won't like it, because on this forum not even a scam is moderated, let alone some harsh words. I personally also don't want to read particularly offensive or rather simply vulgar posts, but as other members say, use the ignore button and don't wonder what's in someone's head because they're doing something that's not normal for you.

Before your time, some people called this way of expression poetry - luckily for you, you weren't here because you wouldn't have felt very welcome on the forum Wink

But there is occasional spikes in the network, and just like now, I see that the fastest is around 20 sat/vB which I think it's too expensive for us average Joe and all we can do is wait for the mempool to at least clear in the next hour and see how the fees will be.

So you really think $0.65 is too expensive for the average Joe? The one who cannot pay that amount for the transaction has much bigger problems than the current situation with mempool...

As for ordinals and their nonsense, there are several threads discussing this so I really don't see the point in making this another one. Besides, none of those who can do something concrete will lift a finger to change something about how someone feels about blockchain being used in this way.
1275  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: COMMUNITY HORRIFIED BY PLAN TO BURN TIRES TO PRODUCE BITCOIN not a good situatio on: September 06, 2023, 11:08:17 AM
It is hard for me to imagine that someone could come up with such a stupid idea, especially since the news does not come from a third world country, but from the US. Far from the fact that there are only roses blooming and honey flowing in the streams, but the people who thought of it never seem to have felt the stench that arises when burning rubber. To me, it seems like the idea of some third-rate manager who wanted to prove himself as someone who can make a profit out of garbage.

Obviously, car tires are a hot topic these days, although some others use them in a completely different way Roll Eyes

1276  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC Sentiment Poll for September on: September 06, 2023, 10:52:01 AM
To me, the third option seems somehow the most realistic, although I do not rule out the possibility that the price will go below $25k if it stays where it is now for too long. Let's say that $26k behaves like $29k until recently, and the way I see it, those who buy larger quantities through OTC will do their best to accumulate as much as possible at a lower price. When we also take into account the general attitude that September is usually a red month in terms of price, it seems that those who buy will be the happiest this month.

~snip~
It's also not just about the halving, and that makes Plan B's theory flawed. Scarcity is only one side of the equation, there's also the question WHERE demand will come from.

The demand will probably come from the approval of the spot ETF, which now has a 75% chance of happening according to some experts. Of course, this is still in the sphere of speculation, but if there is a greater chance of it happening than not, then it should be taken as a possible factor that can trigger the market long before the possible halving effect.
1277  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Which is safest wallet for bitcoin long term holding? on: September 06, 2023, 10:27:56 AM
~snip~
A hardware wallet is the safest one.

When you express yourself in this way, then I can say that it is definitely not good advice, because it turns out that every hardware wallet is equally secure, which is simply not true. We are witnessing that what we considered safe yesterday becomes unsafe overnight, so we need to choose carefully which HW we will choose.

I, for one, cannot say that a good HW is one that has the possibility to share the user's seed with third parties, but I cannot say that a good HW is one that has an irreparable vulnerability that, if not properly patched by the user, allows possible attackers to extract the seed for less than 5 minutes in case he gets physical access to the device.
1278  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: HALVING IS GOING TO CAUSE A GENERAL EFFECT ON ALL IN THE ECOSYSTEM. on: September 06, 2023, 10:10:17 AM
How will the BTC mining difficulty level affect validators (btc miners) due to 1/2 reduction in reward after the next halving and possible backlash on general ecosystem?
~snip~

Those for whom mining BTC is a serious business started to adapt for the next halving already after the last halving, because that's what professionals who protect their investments do - and those who are ordinary amateurs are, as always, doomed to failure, in any business. I don't know if you are aware that for the first four years the reward per block was 50 BTC, and now it is only 6.25 BTC - considering your thinking, the whole thing should have failed a long time ago.

It would be good if you could explain to us exactly what you meant when you said "possible backlash on general ecosystem", because I don't see any sense in what you wrote in relation to halving and Bitcoin.

The use of capital letters has its own meaning, so it makes no sense for the title to be in that format in the future.
1279  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Disruption In The Gambling Industry Your Opinion on: September 05, 2023, 02:21:07 PM
- Do you think that big casinos can survive hacking because they have enough funds stored elsewhere

I am of the opinion that anyone can survive a hack, and that includes an online casino in case they are not so incompetent as to keep all funds in hot wallets or in one account. When it comes to this hack that you mention, the term "pocket money" is mentioned, because the company obviously has billions when it can afford something like this to happen to it.

-  Do you believe that there will be more hacking after the top casinos?

Hacking is an integral part of the online world, whether it is a casino, exchanges or banks, everything that is connected to the internet is subject to hacking.

- Do you think gamblers will stop playing for the time being after this is all settled?

Gamblers will never stop playing, it's not something you just turn off and pretend it doesn't exist for a while. The hack happened, users funds are safe, business is going as usual.
1280  Economy / Economics / Re: How do we profit from Canadian recession? on: September 05, 2023, 01:43:58 PM
One of the biggest economies globally, it's true but best or most healthiest, I am unsure about it.
Canada is like other big nations, have very unhealthy economies but it is better than the United States and some other big nations.
~snip~

All large countries are more or less affected by the recession as a result of what happened during the pandemic, but also years before - the debts simply came due. Here in Europe, it is not at all popular to talk about Germany being in trouble, because everyone knows what that means for the EU, not to mention the members called PIGS (Portugal, Italy, Greece, Spain) that the ECB has been saving for years and with which a lot other members are not satisfied.

I can only talk about it from what I read, and considering that a lot of tourists from the EU were in my country like every year, most of them complain about the prices and that it is not the same as before - but is it something new that already didn't we know? What I hear these days is that some countries will soon be hit by a new wave of price increases, because the summer was terribly hot in Europe with a lot of destructive storms, and producers will use every excuse to raise prices.
