2421  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: One Bitcoin on: January 30, 2022, 11:29:11 AM
After years of dabbling in crypto, through the highs and lows, the profits and losses, the mistakes and the lessons learned, I finally feel a sense of satisfaction. Like many, I heard stories of overnight riches, and felt the need to get involved. Dog-themed coins and the odd euphoric state of owning 1,000,000,000,000 of something.. ANYTHING.. it all just lacked sense and clarity. It was gambling, pure and simple.
From my time in cryptocurrency the experiences of going through shitcoins and those that did somewhat well and missing out on pumps or buying  at the peak, actually builds ones ability to hold when they eventually get into Bitcoin and not panic sell at the slightest fluctuation in price.
Although, Bitcoin is not a get rich quick scheme, many would argue it's not a get rich scheme at all, and understanding the potential of what you hold would enable you utilize it appropriately.

Did I stretch my budget to achieve this? Yes. Will I be OK personally if it goes to 0? Yes. This is a risk I am willing to take, and the more I learn, the more confident I am in my investment.
This part got me thinking about the difference between; "only invest spare money" and "invest amounts you can afford to lose".
Spare money in this case would be money you can easily do without and would likely not notice if it goes missing, but amounts you cannot afford to lose are those which is highly significant to you, such as loans or huge percentage of your net worth.

I believe the balance of how much to spend on bitcoins is somewhere in-between that; significant amounts, but those you can afford to lose.
2422  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: True Value of BTC on: January 29, 2022, 06:34:45 AM
Production cost is inefficient to represent the actual value of bitcoins. It would be possible to create a coin which lacks many of the features of Bitcoin, but is as difficult to mine; People would not buy this coin or token at an elevated value, simply because of the cost to produce it.

Bitcoin was created with unique features that makes it valuable and attracts the demand ebi h grows the price and that is more of an indication to the intrinsic value of Bitcoin.
The cost to mine bitcoins also varies with time and location making it rather difficult to get an exact price, you'll instead have a range of what the amount could be.
2423  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Belgian MP becomes the first European politician to accept salary in Bitcoin on: January 28, 2022, 06:25:27 PM
News like this are very important for the growth of bitcoin regardless of the motivation behind them. Many celebrities and politicians could get involved in bitcoin and cryptocurrencies cause it is the trend and would get them a bit of traffic, it could also be used to win over the support o the public (particularly the younger generation).

It is however useful that influential people adopt bitcoin and show their faith in it as it would rub off unto majority of the public that follow them leading to more acceptance for bitcoin and more faith in it as an actual asset and store of value.
2424  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Biden & BTC on: January 28, 2022, 06:05:21 PM
Secondly there’s nothing wrong with some regulation and here’s the truth, if there’s no regulation like this then governments will ban cryptocurrency and it’ll be much more difficult to transact.
There is another option, The government could allow the citizens use bitcoin as it was intended without having access to their personal details.

There is a lot wrong with regulations. For one, Bitcoin was originally designed to be a peer-to-peer network which eliminates the need for a third party to mediate transactions, and regulations overrides that as exchanges would effectively be acting like banks under the control of the governments and the citizens have to operate through them.

Secondly, forced regulations means forced loss of control. If the government controls the exchanges, then they are in control of the funds stored or sent there for trades, overriding the fact that the bitcoin algorithm is permissionless as transactions on exchanges are usually off chain.
2425  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Hello I am novice on: January 25, 2022, 08:56:49 PM
I'm not good and especially I don't know everything here but I'll do my best and I'm sure I'm ready to learn and follow the policies here.
You are not expected to know everything, that is the reason there are so much information available to you with which you can read and learn, some of them are linked in the reply above.

It may also be important to note that the forum is very privacy focused. You might not want to share personal information about name, or country of origin, as that may be an information that you may not want to be out there later on.
2426  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: IMF urges El Salvador to remove Bitcoin as legal tender on: January 25, 2022, 08:21:33 PM
I don't want to be pessimistic but still El Salvador wasn't ready to adopt Bitcoin,
IMF mounting pressure on El Salvador to remove bitcoin as a legal tender does not mean the country was not ready or it was a wrong choice. The policies of the IMF has also been heavily criticized on several occasions, so I would not rate that suggestion very highly.

now with the price dropping and the pressure mounting, do you think El Salvador is ready to continue to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender?
I am more interested in how much longer they would hodl their bought bitcoin if the price keeps dropping.
2427  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Wikipedia Editors Have Voted Not to Classify NFTs as Art, Sparking Outrage on: January 25, 2022, 07:49:08 PM
No,because most NFTs are created with the sole purpose of being sold.
Pieces of art like paintings and sculptures are created with the same purpose, but this is NOT their MAIN purpose. The main purpose is the artist expressing himself and his views about the world(or something else) in that particular piece of art.
This is a very subjective opinion and I feel can not factor into the debate about what NFTs are. In many instances, the artist who created an artwork is different from the one who marketed it as an NFT, and the originally were trying to express themselves.
There are also many mainstream artists who create artworks for the sole purpose of profit.

The first example is a real piece of abstract art, at least for me but didn't find a buyer yet. The second example is a joke in the name of art which is selling for millions.

So what wikipedia editors have voted for, is actually correct. NFT market is driven by hype. It's not yet matured to be called as art market to be honest.
There are quite a number of artworks which were created as jokes, but sold for millions, or at least thousands, this did not invalidate them as artworks and should not affect NFTs as well.
2428  Other / Archival / Re: Jurisdictions in which a complete or implicit crypto ban on: January 25, 2022, 07:30:33 PM
About total ban and implicit ban, I still do not see anything much that different from adoption in countries that only implicitly ban bitcoin. Or maybe it is not like how it is in my country. In Nigeria, bitcoin and other decentralized currencies (cryptocurrencies) are banned by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) but Nigerians are still getting themselves involved in cryptocurrencies. Nigeria has the highest P2P trading in Africa. Direct bank transactions are banned but people are making use of direct p2p, decentralized exchanges and centralized exchanges to exchange bitcoin and altcoins to fiat.
You are right. There is not much difference in practice. People still use bitcoin and the ban appears to just prevent banks and government regulated establishments from getting involved in it. The downside is such a stance already shows that the country is anti bitcoin and this could be an avenue to victimize citizens caught using it.

It could also set a platform for future actions. The nations with total bans most probably did not start off that way and experimented with less stringent bans before putting a total ban in place.

2430  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: The market is at the most oversold level on: January 25, 2022, 05:37:34 PM
What do you think about the market currently?
From the perspective of an enthusiast, I do not think too much about the market, cause I do not bother about RSI or bitcoin being oversold or the market cap of cryptocurrencies passing or dropping below a certain thresh-hold or the market sentiment. Price actions can not be predicted and I do not bother trying guess what direction it would take.
2431  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do Bitcoin Maxis sell - ever? on: January 24, 2022, 11:00:11 PM
There can not be growth in the network is there are no transactions on it, this involved buying and selling. I assume maxists are major hodliers and have a portion set aside for that, but the ability to use bitcoin for purchase in some instance is one of the ways people can actually utilize Bitcoin and not simply for speculative value.

I wouldn't qualify myself a maxist, but I believe in hodling BTC for years to come as much as I'll use it as a payment option where accepted.
2432  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The relationship between educational qualification and quality of post. on: January 24, 2022, 09:29:46 PM
In my experience what an education does or should do, is make one teachable and curious about different topics. Schools would not prepare one to post constructively in a forum discussing a unique technology like bitcoin, But it can;

• Improve their use of language and construction of sentences,
• Build their ability to research on different topics,
• Make them more open to correction and the opinion of others.
2433  Other / Meta / Re: What outsiders know or say about Bitcointalk. on: January 24, 2022, 08:58:28 PM
I am wondering. .when watching video shows on the TheBitcointalkShow channel : at seconds 07:33,, Cyrus said that the founder of the bitcointalk.org forum was Cobra. .And as far as I know Satoshi is the inventor of bitcoin or maybe I misinterpreted this?
If you are referring to the most recent video posted on that channel about a quiz, then that particular question was referring to "bitcoin.org" and not "bitcointalk.org". And the question was about who has access to the domain, not who founded.
Theymos has sole access to this forums' domain name (bitcointalk.org). Satoshi is also still the inventor of bitcoin.
2434  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Gambling In Crypto on: January 24, 2022, 07:50:17 PM
This discussion would be more appropriate in the Gambling section as it focuses on how gambling is affected by crypto. You can move it with the move topic option at the bottom left of this page.

I find it much more effective than gambling with fiat. Let’s use this thread to discuss pros/cons and how us users can improve it
I am not a frequent gambler, but I have gambled with fiat and also with Bitcoin, and I find bitcoin to be far more efficient. I am also privacy focused, so a platform that allows one to gamble anonymously without the hassles of banks is a plus.

The con I believe exists is the high withdrawal fee imposed by some platforms to cover for changes in transaction fees on the bitcoin network.
2435  Other / Meta / Re: What outsiders know or say about Bitcointalk. on: January 24, 2022, 07:25:42 PM
In regards to the bolded part, that's not always the case: "If you post threads outside of your own local thread you will be banned"!
That rule applies to the local thread section and I believe it was put in place to prevent users from creating multiple local threads in that section as it could get it clogged up and make it difficult for users to find a thread that applies to their language.
If a local board exists then anyone can actually create a thread there and join discussions.

Some languages actually do have multiple threads in the local thread section, but the users who created them are not banned, Maybe cause those threads are specific and do not contribute to spam.
2436  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Banks, Exchanges and your Privacy on: January 24, 2022, 08:21:40 AM
it's too complicated if one exchange doesn't do KYC initially, when we have large enough funds the funds will be frozen until we do KYC, sometimes KYC at the beginning is more supportive for trading in the future
That is the objective of this thread. To discuss P2P platforms that do not require one to submit KYC and not just a case where you are allowed to  make xxx amount of transactions without a certain tier level verification. As long as an exchange requires KYC at all, they can demand for it at anytime.

Quote
and so far I don't have any problems with banks and the government in privacy issues even though exchange parties use local banks, here we are required to be smart in conducting bank transactions, do not make flashy transactions and invite the government to check our data on certain exchanges
Even without making a certain type of transaction, the government and banks can still track your data through the exchanges. The exchanges also have custody and can freeze your funds stored on it.
2437  Other / Meta / Re: Another "Legednary" newbie on: January 23, 2022, 11:57:00 PM
So I want to know moderator did visit someone's profile to identify spam posts or they just deleted everything reported by other reputable members?
Moderators also are part of the forum and visit different boards, while doing this, they can stumble on posts which need their attention without the need for a report.

Also, mods do not act on all reports, they take action based on their individual judgement. A report can include a link to the users post history if they have a lot of spam posts and the mods would take a look and decide what decision to take.

Being reputable does not affect the outcome of a report.
2438  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What happens to your network if bitcointalk go offline on: January 23, 2022, 09:30:25 PM
the thing is what will happen to members network of friends on the forum who may not border in sharing personal contacts e.g email if one day the forum suddenly goes offline how do we link up with each other and keep the discussion going.
I believe a lot of members who connected here have contacted each other on some other platform, preferably one which members can maintain their privacy on, like discord, telegram, signal etc. If the forum does go offline, they can continue correspondence on those platforms and possibly use that link to contact mutual friends.
2439  Other / Meta / Re: Another "Legednary" newbie on: January 23, 2022, 06:57:05 PM
He has been doing bounty for a long time and bounty workers do not post much in other sections of the forum as it may lead to ban their account.
Bounty hunters would not get banned for posting in other sections of he forum, the would get their posts deleted if they post spam around the forum, and a temporary ban if they do not change their habits before the possibility of being permanently banned.

If moderators stop banning low quality posts, they may be encouraged to post in other sections and at some point the quality of their posts will start to improve.
Newbies get to this forum and gradually post before getting aquatinted with the forum and eventually their post quality increases.
It's much different when a newbie joins and immediately starts spamming different sections for a bounty campaign, this would get their posts deleted and eventually lead to a ban.
Posting organically and improving your post quality would not get anyone banned.
2440  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How bitcoin has employed more African youths. on: January 23, 2022, 02:51:53 AM
These problems made an average African youth to be inferior to his foreign mates.
These problems make an average African to be less fortunate and less exposed to certain opportunities, this however does not in any way make them inferior.
Africans are proud, intelligent and dedicated people. Most parts of the continent is just yet to get a functioning system of government which serves the people.

Bitcoin surely has given Africans a platform to grow their skills and access financial freedom without needing to switch to a foreign currency. And the growth of Bitcoin and the blockchain shows Africans have real interest in futuristic development.
