But why would any otherwise halfway intelligent adult buy any crappy, overpriced low-quality Apple product?

1. it used to be better (and maybe still is) than windows crap. I had to run W10 at home on a couple of PCs. It is the most ridiculous "nanny" system ever. Always bothers you with endless updates that is difficult to switch off.
2. less chances of a complete sellout of ALL of your data which happens on Google phones. I bought cheaper google phone once or twice. The first thing it/they did was to MANDATORY link me/the phone to my gmail account. F that! On Apple, you can choose to opt out of everything that you don't want.
3. I am a 12 year girl. /s

Used to be better? When? The 1980s?

Windows95 left the Mac world in the dust and they didn't start to come close to catching up until they got rid of the old Motorola and IBM CPUs and switched to Intel. Even then Windows and Linux-based systems consistently posted better benchmarks.

Windows10? I wouldn't use that either. I'm strictly Windows7. Of course I turn off all updates.

Nanny system? That's how I consider Apple. Why do you have to use malware like iTunes just to do a factory reset of an apple device or transfer media files from a PC through a USB cable? Why do they want you to identify yourself and make you jump through hoops just to make an anonymous account. Why even have accounts?

At least you can use Android without a Google account. Just download APK files, copy them over via USB, and install them with your file manager. Voila, no "apps" store, "play" store or any other store. Just install your mobile programs and run them.

Of course you have to remove any SIM cards and not enter any wifi passwords so the slimeballs can't connect to you until you've got your system set up.
_____

I realize not everybody prizes privacy and anonymity. Those who do avoid Apple, Google, and anything Microsoft after Win7.

In fact, avoid anything made by an American (or by extension Japanese, S. Korean, Taiwanese etc.) corporation. Trust only open-source, vetted by a worldwide community of volunteers.

Ever wonder why after all those years of product registration, activation and rigorous anti-"piracy" schemes, Microsoft not only started giving away their flagship product for free, but shoved it down people's throats? Same with their #2 product, their office productivity suite? Where are their revenues coming from now?

Face it neither Bill Gates, nor Larry Page nor the late Steve Jobs, nor anyone else wants to be waterboarded at Guantanamo Bay.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist but I'm not a conspiracy denier either.

Top o' the morning Bitcoinland.

Still basically sideways... currently $3797USD/$1584CAD.

Ho hum. It's the January blahs.

Meanwhile winter just hit Toronto like someone threw a switch on New Year's Day. No problem, I'm flying back down to Mexico next week.

No dental work this time. I have to wait until May for that. This is strictly about escaping winter and living happily ever after, although I'll probably be doing some improvements to my properties there.

Booked to fly back for the Jays' home opener but I'm leaving the possibility open of flying up mid-winter for a couple of days if I need money or in case of an emergency. I might be jonesing for a musical audience by then too.

Life is good. Thank you Bitcoin.

That's less expensive than the scam that Apple is, but still it's not cheap...

I can understand why 12-year-old girls get iPhones. They're cute and all the other kids have them.

But why would any otherwise halfway intelligent adult buy any crappy, overpriced low-quality Apple product?

I'd rather spend my money on materials, workmanship, research and development than on advertising.

Good morning Bitcoinland.

Down a bit in the last little while I see, but still going basically sideways... currently $3798USD/$5130CAD (Bitcoinaverage).

Meanwhile this place seems especially infested with trolls and FUDsters today.  Roll Eyes Get a life losers.

Red flag!

HitBTC freezes customers accounts ahead of Proof of Keys Event...

Cold storage holders unaffected.

Didn't anyone learn a lesson from MtGox?

Good morning Bitcoinland and a late happy new year to all. I didn't check in yesterday because I didn't make it home until 5:00PM, still hung over and just washed off the juices and went straight back to bed.

Still sideways with an upward tilt... currently $3860USD/$5252CAD (Bitcoinaverage).

Hopefully we'll keep going up this time but I won't lose any sleep if it dips some more.

So paper wallets (encrypted I assume) are the only thing that you consider to be absolutely safe? also how do you create them? live cd on normal net connected pc (disconnected when creating paper wallet), some kind of specialist device, or air-gapped computer that has never seen the internet?

I use an old computer with no wifi adapter, no ethernet cable, and a printer that has never been connected to an internet-capable computer.

Print spoolers can be hacked.

For ultimate security, keep multiple encrypted copies offsite in multiple locations.

It's always time to dump crap and buy Bitcoin.

Do you regret it not selling at peaked on last jan 2018 ?

Actually it peaked in Dec 2017 and no, I have no regrets.

In truth I'm a little miffed that I had to sell part of a bitcoin in January to buy my house and land in Mexico. I would rather still be holding it.

Luckily I sold at the top of the January bounce and got almost $21kCAD. That represented almost a third of the dollers I had invested in Bitcoin. Since then I've sold well over twice that much more to buy 2 more properties in Mexico, extensive dental restoration surgery (including 16 implants) and assorted lifestyle improvements.

The last thing I would have done is sell my precious bitcoins for mere dollars. The bulk of my wealth is still in Bitcoin. It's also all profit.

See you in 5 years.

It is very worrying to even remember that I had coin that were worth more than 20Kusd and now they are worth below 200$. I have regretted a lot but it is only for experience reasons. This wouldn't happen to me again.

Below $200USD? The price is currently at $3830USD .

Proof of keys? I control my own keys thank you.

Trusted third parties? Isn't that an oxymoron?

I haven't had any coins on an exchange since MtGox. Luckily that mistake only cost me 50BTC. Never again.

Closest thing I have to a trusted third party is my Trezor which I somehow got talked into using against my better judgment. Luckily I only have 5BTC on it. I stopped using it last year after having it for less than half a year.

Obviously cold ("paper" wallet) storage is much more secure. Only I have control over the keys and they're never exposed to the internet except when I sweep a wallet into Mycelium to transfer coins and that's only small amounts for short periods of time.

This is why it's good to spread your stash between dozens or hundreds of small wallets. My biggest single wallet has a little over 30 coins in it (from pulling out what I had at Cavirtex after being Goxed) but I'm almost scared to sweep it to split it into smaller wallets because that would entail risking that many coins at once by exposing them to the internet.

I suppose I should empty my Trezor on Genesis Block Day as a way to assert ownership of my keys instead of trusting Trezor. Then again why wait until Jan. 3?

Well good morning Bitcoinland.

Just woke up in time to see we've obliterated yesterday's little dip and we're back in range to continue the assault on $4k... currently $3885USD/$5297CAD (Bitcoinaverage).

Go Bitcoin go.
2515  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 25, 2018, 05:24:48 PM
Merry Xmas Bitcoinland. Greetings on this day of family, friends, food and music.

Peace to all, bulls and bears alike.

Too bad about the Bitcoin price... currently $3750USD/$5130CAD (Bitcoinaverage).

Let's hope this dip below $4k is short-lived.

Isn't "gentlemen's club" a euphemism for a striptease bar?

We've always had women here, albeit a minority, and I don't think most of them are "working" girls (except for maybe NLC).

Not all of them are as open about their gender as Bitchick. Can't blame them. It can get a little adolescent around here, almost locker room.

I just don't think having women here is cricket whatsoever. It simply should not be allowed.

I was hoping this thread would become fully sealed as male. Then I'd coax you all into posting photos of your toilet areas in a puerile pissing contest. Then my bear friends, the bulky hairy type rather than pessimist financialist type, would make their move and blackmail all of you into total submission.

You would spend the rest of your lives as their footstools, maids and be swapped between them as their occasional party favour.

I always had my suspicions about you. This post seems to have confirmed them.

Cheers chick. Or is that frail, dame, broad, babe, gurrrl, or wymyn? Somehow you don't strike me as the kind to call herself a wymyn.

Doesn't matter what you call 'em, I like 'em.

Merry Xmas.

Good morning and happy Xmas Eve Bitcoinland.

The battle for $4k continues, on the good side... currently $4238USD/$5762CAD (Bitcoinaverage).

We've still got a week to finish the year on an upswing.

Go Bitcoin go.

  ...This is a gentlemen's club.

then wtf are you doing here?

Good morning Bitcoinland.

Seems we've been having a nice little day of consolidation after this week's pretty decent price rise... currently $4030USD/$5462CAD (Bitcoinaverage).

Let's hope the bear is exhausted and we're ready to get back to the usual slow growth with occasional small corrections. Upward and downward bubbles are exciting and offer opportunities for traders/gamblers but investors/holders know that slow and steady wins the game.

As long as the bottoms  and tops keep getting exponentially higher (at least until the s-curve goes "vertical"), we'll continue to keep making money.

Go Bitcoin go.
2519  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 20, 2018, 06:30:05 PM
Good morning Bitcoinland.

The price continues to rise... currently $4118USD/$5566CAD (Bitcoinaverage).

How long before we take this upward movement seriously?

Go Bitcoin go.

someone sended me this out of mexico

LoL nice to see that on a bill Cheesy
Those tips recommendations are totally out of whack.  lol CAD is least valuable of all and also lowest tip... or do they think Canadians can't afford to give much?  Maybe Jimbo can help us out on this one.

Those aren't suggested tips. They're exchange rates in pesos.
2520  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 18, 2018, 03:32:59 PM
An early good morning Bitcoinland.

Still holding on to most of yesterday's gains I see... currently $3601USD/$4830CAD (Bitcoinaverage).

Go Bitcoin go.

While I hopefully won't need to sell any coins until April/May, I like the option of selling at a profit from what I paid in the last month.

As it is, I'd rather roll up my spare change than sell even enough for pocket money. I'd rather be buying now but I already overspent these last few weeks and I don't expect any serious revenues until the end of January.

No regrets. I'd rather have coins in my paper wallets than bills in my leather one.
