2561  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: A gold-backed coin on: July 31, 2015, 02:29:39 PM
There may be a market for this? Some people trade "paper gold". However if one could buy a gold backed coin then one could also buy gold. Holding the gold is far more compelling than holding a voucher for gold. Especially when considering that gold is a hedge against catastrophic collapse. A gold backed coin may have zero value if there is no internet, while a gold coin would have huge value.
2562  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: New essay seriously questions Bitcoin's future success on: July 30, 2015, 08:27:01 PM
the article is saying governments can outcompete Bitcoin by creating their own cryptocurrencies. ...
That's what I got from it also. But why would I want controlled money that works in one place when I could have math based money that works everywhere? This is the same as businesses thinking they could create a digital money. Actually, what they are creating is just a frequent flier mile. A store of value for one purpose that someone else controls. Do I want that?

Please, lol.
2563  Economy / Economics / Re: Taxing is legalized robbery on: July 30, 2015, 08:14:45 PM
Yeah, I hate it when thieves break into my house, steal my money; then use it to build roads, pay firefighters, and educate my kids. Fricken thieves.

Are you socialist? Those thing can be paid without taxes

Some socialist ideas make sense to me. It's situational. If I lived with 100 people on an island I think it would works fine, but socialism does not scale well, IMO. But mostly I'm not an anarchist. I have had the displeasure of living in an anarchy.
Now could those things happen without taxes. Somewhat. Firefighting was a pay for use service in the U.S. 100 years ago. If you did not pay the firehouse, your house burned down. This system was replaced by public firefighting all over the world because it is better. Same with policing. You can have private police, but they are not going to enforce the law, just the laws their sponsors want.
Private roads were also normal in the past. Which is why so few traveled in the 19th. century. The roads were not coordinated and it was extremely hard to even leave the county you were born in. When public highways emerged it was a key part of exploding the economy. Same with free public education. More than most any other factor it moved millions of people out of poverty and transformed our country for the better. That is because there is no model for profitably educating the poor. How would they pay?
You may feel oppressed for paying taxes, but you would still pay. And you would still be oppressed. Without a government some other entity would fill the vacuum and simply take whatever they wanted from you. I know I would. I would kill anyone in my way and offer an AK-47 and a percentage of the loot to anyone who will join my raids. I would sell slaves, demand tribute, you would not like me.

2564  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: how do i know my private key? on: July 30, 2015, 06:52:01 PM
NEVER give out your private key.

For most people you will likely never need to even see that key. The website may need a pass phase to withdraw. But that is not the one you have in bitcoin core. After you are logged in the only thing they really need is a "receiving address" from your bitcoin core software.

Your 10 years old aren't you?  Cheesy

I just picked guns & ammo. I can get everything else with that.  Wink
2567  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Secure messengers: are there any? on: July 30, 2015, 06:42:35 PM
a related WARNING about messaging.

At next months black hat conference in Vegas a new exploit will be detailed that allows an attacker to attack most any android phone just by sending a video by SMS. The video contains a payload that could lead to a complete takeover of your phone. Any android after 2.2 is susceptible and, unlike other attacks, you do not have to even view the message. Just sending it is enough and all the attacker needs is your number.
All you can do now is (on some phones) disallow auto download of messages and NEVER DL A VIDEO ON AN ANDROID PHONE!!!!!!! After the conference it will only take weeks for this exploit to move into the wild.

2568  Economy / Economics / Re: Taxing is legalized robbery on: July 30, 2015, 04:58:29 PM
I am with you guys who think our taxes are often wasted, or spent on the wrong stuff. But the basic idea of taxation is a good one as long as the proceeds go toward the common good. IMO it's not robbery (yet) in the U.S., just poor governance.

2570  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [POLL] Accept KYC or jump through hoops to avoid it? on: July 30, 2015, 03:22:08 PM
The only thing I can be sure about when dealing with an exchange is that will not do KYC/AML is that I am sending my money to a bunch of criminals. How do you think that is going to end?
Maybe they are believers who want to do good business without the oppression of law. Or maybe they are laughing their ass off while spending the money I foolishly sent them. It's really up to them to decide what to do with the money. And when they steal it what are you going to do? Tell the cops some criminal in Ukraine stole your money instead of helping you evade the law.
2571  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Buy Bitcoins! on: July 30, 2015, 12:59:14 PM
What payment method?
Do you have a specific escrow in mind?
2572  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Why bitcoin is going nowhere (too hard to buy bitcoin) on: July 29, 2015, 08:23:35 PM
I would take a thick black marker and write "Get Bent" on the application. Then I would mail it back, because that questionnaire is nuts. The law does require exchanges to do AML and KYC compliance, however this goes far beyond what is required. It is also important to understand that the protocol requires no identity at all and this is in no way a bitcoin problem. So if you don't like the legal requirements than YOU must change them. You would be better serving your efforts to send a letter to your elected representatives than writing here. Only YOU can change these laws by voicing your opinion and voting to show you mean it.

I would argue that the days of being able to affect anything of this magnitude by sending letters (even millions of them) are long gone. Even a Snowden, followed by a public outcry against surveillance wasn't enough to put a dent in that.

The only way to effect change is to bypass the problem. Companies affected need to be ignored (as they seem to be already). Users need to choose to use companies that don't bend over so easily, even at some risk. Naturally that isn't gonna happen overnight, but as long as the options remain, I think it will slowly happen.
I agree with you that market force is a great strategy. Seeing money left on the table inspires business to join your efforts. I would never fill out the form in this thread for example. But I don't think it hurts to directly contact law makers. They do listen, even though many things that 80% of the population supports do not happen.

I also think that if you vote, participate, write letters; and still nothing happens... Then you have earned the right to bitch up a storm. If I start with "poor me, the gov is evil" then I seem like a complainer.
2573  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What's your opinion of gun control? on: July 29, 2015, 08:14:33 PM
My opinion of gun control is that it is best to relax your muscles, look past the sights at your target, and fire on the exhale with a steady trigger pull.  Grin

2574  Economy / Economics / Re: Number of shop customers paying in BTC / gross sales in shops (brick and mortar) on: July 29, 2015, 08:10:06 PM
The way to get a place locally to accept bitcoins is to ask if they take them, then walk out when they say no. I have convinced several local places near me. Show them bitpay or coinbase if they are confused and afraid.
2575  Other / Off-topic / Re: Creating new digital USD (for the Federal Reserve) on: July 29, 2015, 08:05:22 PM
I might be interested. Can you use them to buy bitcoins?  Cheesy

enjoy!

RodeoX, at some point ( 2015-1-04) you maybe had ~25 btc, at which point I think you sent it to an exchange.

have you reported the income you made with bitcoin from here?

https://blockchain.info/address/13dh6dNZ3FcXSnJRG8tBCUTvaaRaxgx7rn

Closer! That is one of my wallets. (I don't hide). But the total is off I think? And I'm not using exchanges much anymore. I don't think I used one this year. But yeah, that is some of my BTC. The best way to find out may be to get my tax return. I submit for purchases over $10K. So yes, I report my capitol gains, even though I never sell bitcoins.
2577  Economy / Economics / Re: What the hell happened? on: July 29, 2015, 05:48:54 PM
I have this crazy theory that there is more supply than demand at the moment.  Grin
2578  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What's your opinion of gun control? on: July 29, 2015, 03:17:41 PM
I think that in places like Texas where the trespassing is a common stuff, the people need a way to protect them self. But if you own a firearm you should keep it in a place where nobody can find it or reach it. In order not to happen many unwanted things
It just happens that I'm right now sitting in a Starbucks in Texas, about 200 feet from where a shootout occurred about a year ago.  The bad guy tried to jack and steal a car, and the owner was returning to the car.  He had a concealed carry permit and was carrying his weapon.

I'm not going to argue in favor of shooting people dead who steal cars.  I really just don't care.

But everyone should recognize that if Good Guy had not been armed, she would most likely have been shot dead, defenseless......

There is very little attention given to the frequent event of a gun saving a life. It happens almost everyday in America. My favorite this week is the escort who killed a John who attacked her. Turns out the guy was likely a serial killer. If not for a gun she would have died a horrifying death at the hands of a maniac.

*Waits for Putin's fanbois to tell me why the West is even more bad in every conceivable way...*

Yes, I'd love to hear more about Obama and Hillary Clinton! Wink

Or, maybe they'll just "turn a blind eye" to this thread.

I wonder how many of them work here? Not that the U.S. is free of this kind of stuff.

Nope. If we can all be listed then start with me. How many coins do I have?

18.653, now you must send me one! Honestly it would all be guess or speculation without the cooperation of merchants and users you have made trades with and following the coins.

On the nose!!! Shocked

lol, no.  Cheesy

The point, I suppose, is that if you want additional privacy then you must do additional work. Seems fair.
