I'm going to rudely butt in here and say that I think this discussion is very important for Darkcoin right now.
I am a masternode owner. I therefore pay to have servers that perform a service at a cost to me. To pay for that cost, I occasionally get 20% of a mined block. Now that we have RC5, my masternodes cover costs and make a small profit. Right now, electricity prices are so high in most places in the world that mining is becoming a decreasingly viable venture. We need miners to mine (the more the better!), the network needs masternode (the more the better!). If we can make mining more profitable by refining the algo for the miners then it is a win win situation.

I recently conducted a bit of a solo mining experiment and was able to rent a 3.5Ghs X11 rig that delivered impressive stats (bursting to 7Ghs!). At the time, our solo pool accounted for 4% of the total network hash rate.
Does anybody know how I was able to rent such hash power? What technology are they using?
Edit: Just look at the highest hash rate X11 rig on miningrigrentals.com to see the rig I rented...

so "dummy" question: can we run mining over masternodes and cut out the miners all together ? Is that technically possible ?
Concerning Possible... I believe yes. But it brings up centralization issues. But there are centralization issues when you have massive pools mining as well. I think it is the question of the day! Certainly something to think about. Well, one hypothetical situation is that all nodes (not just masternodes) CPU mine with their idle cycles.

"dummy" answer: No. And this is a good thing too. I don't understand it enough to explain why.

They are only free for a certain number of instance hours per month! Sh*t. I didn't realise that. They've been hammering me for charges - sometimes over $100 per month when all the time I was thinking it was the free option. My bad *duh*, but they don't have make it difficult to tell if you're going to be charged for something or not. I've no idea where those bandwidth charges are quoted. Many thanks for the contributions. I'll try to contact them to see what they say. I have found AWS support to be very decent to my polite admissions of screw ups and begging for help i've been impressed with them so far.

The chargable's seem to be "0.020 per On Demand Linux t1.micro Instance Hour" which was all on the "free tier" ?
I just feel like shutting down the account because I've got no clue how to tell if the services I'm consuming attract any charge or not.
Can anyone throw any light on this ? Right, so the obvious course of action isn't doing anything like contacting AWS customer/billing support. That would be insane. The logical thing to do is come to the DRK thread and talk about it, because we can log in to our employee accounts at Amazon and check out your usage to see if there has been a mistake on Amazon's end. Ah - looks it's the "lazy b*strd meets conceited c*nt" post. ok, thanks for the slap down - point taken - but it happens that this thread contains a substantial amount of discussion about AWS due to the fact that so many masternodes are hosted on it and for that reason I didn't consider it an off-topic post. Other user's experiences are at least as useful as what an employed support person tells you. I'll try the front door. You are not alone. Same thing is happening to me on my supposedly free EC2 instance. It was not free for August or September. I just now noticed due to your posting about it here. So thanks for the heads up! They are only free for a certain number of instance hours per month! I'm running 10 masternodes on a single T2.medium and it is costing me $2.70 per day including traffic based on last month's bill.

Oh and I agree, market behaviour is infuriating but if you don't like it...go play on a regulated market.

Why do I get the feeling that you three are in cahoots to manipulate the market? Thou doth complaineth too much There have been a lot of new accounts signing up to proclaim totally honest frustration at the unstoppable decline of the price of Darkcoin and the futility of trying to fight the mighty coins above DRK in market cap in the last few days. Trolls and hired goons are back again

Stop dreaming of getting rich quick people.
The dumping we are seeing at the moment is bag holders realising that we are looking at several years before DRK gains greater adoption.
DARKCOIN IS LESS THAN A YEAR OLD!
Where was Bitcoin after 1 year? Darkcoin is going to boom and crash and boom and crash and gradually gain momentum over time.
Besides, why the comparison to BTC? DRK is not trying to replace BTC. It is filling a gap that BTC does not cover.

Continuing my darkcoin community research... ...using the forum extraction tool I am developing... ...here is how the title of this [ANN] thread changed over time, starting from day 1: January 18, 2014 (When darkcoin wasn't even called darkcoin yet... ) until today. If this has any value for you, and if you like to see more, consider a donation to help me further develop my tools: XtAdMy5nSxArut6rKKLQXxm84rpJNipXib
What is the next thing you want to see? 1) Do you want to know who of all the darkcoin users swears the most (using words like f**k etc..) then vote by donating any amount to this address: Xwz1utupG5LqWMsCeZqF3vo9xtiA7FXcjH2) If you would like to see a word cloud of all the comments evan duffield ever made, vote by donating to this address: Xn9b76yUZ5zGAcMvFv41ZSYn9XHMJpX833(I will eventually fulfill both tasks if they reach 5 DRK each, otherwise just the one that has more DRK) Have fun. Add May 25th, Hard Fork to pay Masternodes - Fail Oh poor little lamb hasn't managed to spot what the list consists of. Would you like a hint or would you like to have another try all by yourself?

The way this is traded makes me fucking sick. You dumpers are fucking scum.
More master nodes for me. Edit: Its a marathon, not a sprint. Don't panic. Give it a year or two

Mintpal very strange trading today for darkcoin.
Thats what I was thinking. Its not that I was expecting any significant activity as a result of opensource but its this low volume decline that is unsettling.

Some interesting activity on mintpal at the moment. Bots be plotting.

Bad luck Ed. And to think that I know of some people running hot masternodes on spot instances. Lets hope they've got backups Are people still running hot masternodes? Why? What's the issue with hot nodes? As long as your password is strong enough and your firewall is configured right nobody is going to touch your coins... At least until the next episode of the HearthBleed and Bash bugs. So what, as long as the wallet encryption holds ... It's not that simple. If you run with a password protected wallet, you need to ensure that there is no bash history or ps listing that may store (and hence give away) your password. There are ways to configure your MN to minimize this risk, but as another posted on here, don't ever make any mistakes, not even once. If one day you forget to use darkcoind masternode start 'head -1' and instead, being in a hurry or some such, use darkcoind masternode start MYPASSWORDCUZIMINAHURRY , well, 'ps -ef' is going to show your password. It goes without saying that heartbleed and shellshock show just how fragile our systems of security really are. As I said earlier, its fine just as long as you never screw up. Also, vertoe has taught me a few tricks that make it easier to be secure in hot mode (thread on DCT I think).

Bad luck Ed. And to think that I know of some people running hot masternodes on spot instances. Lets hope they've got backups Are people still running hot masternodes? Why? Have you ever tried running 70 remote setups? It's a maintainance hell... I only realised how much easier it is to manage hot nodes when running testnet masternodes. Still, I'll stick with cold for now. I'm quite a way from 70 masternodes.
