1641  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Bet safely kids! on: March 18, 2015, 11:46:26 AM
Hi All,

I’m making an extremely difficult public statement to hopefully provide a warning to the Dash community.

On Sunday morning I managed to lose all of my Darkcoins on Directbet dice.  The total loss was 28,000DRK and represents all of my holdings.  My mistake was simple…make a big loss and then lose track desperately trying to win it back.  I have made enquiries with various parties about buying back in but unfortunately I do not have enough FIAT to do so.

This happened incredibly easily.  I am a man who has never gambled before being involved in crypto althouh I have done consultancy work for gambling companies in the past.  I was a regular better on Directbet and almost always ended up breaking even or finishing up on the day.  On Sunday, circumstances, bad decisions and maths caught up with me.

With regard to Directbet I believe their dice game is provably fair in terms of probablity and maths however I have some concerns at how their site was functioning under a DDOS attack at the time.

When I asked Directbet some simple questions about my losses their answers have been at times  contradictory and not aligned with my experiences which I find to be quite troubling.  Directbet have also refused to provide me with a contact address so that I can formally ask a list of questions via my solicitor.  Whilst I take full responsibility for my actions I also feel that I may not have made such a huge initial loss if Directbet had suspended betting while their site was under attack and inaccessible.  I was unable to see a visual reference of how much I had won or lost and I believe this contributed to a lack of visibility of my actions and to contributed to me making such a huge initial loss.  Obviously my attempts to win my coins back was my decision alone.

I believe that probably fair is not just about maths, it is also about providing a level playing field for your customers.

Despite the significant financial loss that I have incurred, one of the worst feelings for me is the fact that the thousands of hours I have invested in Darkcoin/Dash will never bare fruit for me.  I take some comfort in the fact that those of you who hold on to your darkcoins might reap some rewards. I do have roughly 1.5DRK left so if you could all work really hard and make that worth $100k I’d be reall grateful Wink

I don’t feel that am able to continue to work on Dash so I asked Evan to remove me from the team website on Monday.  I am also extremely frustrated because most of my business contacts were waiting for a rebranding before they adopted Dash.  When I feel less sore about what has happened I will pull the details of those contacts together and pass them on to Fernando/Minotaur and who knows I might be at peace with myself enough to follow up some leads myself.

Beyond the financial loss I have unforgiveably let my family down and this breaks my heart most of all.

I’ll always be hoping and looking for a way to rebuild my Dash but I expect that the future is too bright for the coin for me to ever afford it.

Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security people.  Bet sensibly.  I didn’t and I’m a broken man.

2014 and 2015 have not been kind to me crypto-wise.  In total I have either had stolen or thrown away the equivalent of nearly 50k DRK.  Protect your wallets too!

Much love.

Dan

Hello,

It has been 20 minutes since I made a bet. I am seeing this:

Bet Status : Pending

Message : Transfer received. Your bet will be processed shortly. Please check back momentarily.

And I don't know is did my bet went through or not?

Thanks

Are you betting with Bitcoin?  Probably just waiting for a confirmation.  I'd say your bet went through.

so with this , you are saying that all the bets from the down system will be in the possesion of directbet even without the site rolling the dice because if you refund them you think that it wont be provably fair?

If your Direct Dice bet is received while our automated betting system is down, it will be processed and the dice will be rolled as soon as the system is back up.

There is no other option. Otherwise, it will not be provably fair.

Note that you can know in advance whether our automated betting system is up and running before sending your wager.

Simply go and refresh the Bet Status page of your Direct Dice bet. If it says "Send your bets now !" or "Open for Additional Betting" while displaying your bet address, you know the system is up and ready to process your bet. Otherwise, there will be a different message and the bet address will not be displayed.

If your web site is down you can't see this info.  You web site was not accessible to me (in the UK) from 2130UTC on the 14th until the point I made my last "chasing my losses" bet at about 1100UTC on the 15th.

Directbet:  Please could you reply to my email with your correspondence address.  I'd like to ask my solicitor to clear up a few hopefully minor inconsistencies in conversations and versions of events over the last few days and I would like this to be done out of the public eye.

Thread updated with DarkNote !

Why still amber for Darsend being untraceable/unlinkable?

Darksend has yet to be traced or linked and that chap who made the bold claims several weeks ago has failed to deliver (which is no suprise since his initial claim was false too).

Just a quick heads up for all you punters out there.

During the DDOS attack on Directbet a few nights ago, I managed to lose £55,000 in Darkcoins.

Obviously my poor judgement is not Directbet's fault.  However, because I was stupidly betting blind because the web site wasn't available I did not have the usual Win or Lose visual cue which contributed to me losing more than I normally would before calling it a night.  I had no idea how far in the hole I was.

When I realised how far I was down, I panicked and tried to win it back and ended up with nothing.  All before the web site came back up again.  Standard big loss tale really.

Obviously I made a huge mistake but I have suggested to Directbet that whilst their site is under attack and web pages not visible it might be fair to customers to suspend betting (or refund bets accordingly).  Blind blockchain betting is not what directbet is about.  Directbet initially conversed with me about this but have since gone silent.

If Directbet want to be the most professional outfit out there, they shouldn't make it possible for punters to bet blind.  A quick check with other online sportsbooks show that most suspend betting if their web site is down.  Please keep this in mind should Directbet "go dark" again.

Sadly, this is an otherwise perfect trust rating tarnished for me and I'll be taking my custom elsewhere.  One more further word of warning, as far as I can tell Direcbet are not licensed to operate as a bookmaker in the country they operate out of or in their major markets.

How did you manage to do this with the site down? DirectDice or something? If you were sports betting you'd need the wbsite to generate an address to send to surely?

Dice. Every time I tried to generate a new address the site crashed.  Every time I tried to review betting history, the site crashed.

Not trying to deflect from my bad decisions but hopefully providing a useful warning to some and also some useful feedback to Directbet.

Edit:  just had an email from Directbet saying that dice rolls didn't happen whilst the web site was unavailable during the DDOS over the weekend which confusingly contradicts what they posted on this forum during the attack.

Anyway, I don't wish to air my dirty washing in public.

Bet safely and sensibly everybody.

First: Thanks for the professional outlet you're doing. That's something else, compared to most of this forums.

However, something I learned while betting everywhere; once the site starts getting buggy, you cash out and wait for the storm to pass. There are thousands of sites waiting for your money, so I'd recommend just visiting another site until the trouble is gone. Smiley

I've learned that now.  Thanks for the advice.

I feel that Directbet are only partially provably fair.  Fairness extends beyond calculation of rolls, it also incorporates provision of consistant information on success and failure.

I've asked them for a correspondence address so that my solicitor is able to engage in discussion with them to clarify differences in my experiences of the service on Saturday night and Sunday morning compared to Directbet's official response to me.

"I'd like to inform you that our website was down on March 14th from
21:30 UTC until 23:25 UTC."

Where have you got the idea that DRK has pulled out of the anon race?  What does this even mean?

They are not Dark anymore, they are Dash.  Is this not a complete change in direction?  Consumer adoption seems to be more the priority rather than anonymity.

The name change does not alter the underlying technology at all.  DRK already has growing adoption and the hope is to  increase this and speed it up.  Anonymity is still a core product.

DRK want to be the next Bitcoin. Be a good coin, accepted by everyone.

It might be the death of this coin as an anon coin, seriously. If you want to see "Dash" accepted by Dell, it won't be anonymous at all.

You can't do two opposite aims at the same time. Dash will surely continue to grow, but not as an anon coin ...  Roll Eyes

Some heavy supporters of DRK have already understood that, for example, Sangoku who was shouting "DarkCoin" everywhere in the French section of Bitcointalk has now stopped to support it. (And he was an heavy supporter since day one)

What a load of bullshit.  How does the fact we have greater adoption than any over anon coin mean that we are less anon?

He got the idea from a daydream hoping drk/dash would go away so his shadow coins would make him rich.

Well I got news for him, seems like monero and navajocoin are next in line so you need to hope drk AND monero AND navajocoin all go away.

Navajo is indeed looking pretty solid.  Nice and calm community too.

I would be extremely interested in seeing independent evaluations of SDC by prominent members of the community.

They should ask Dan Metcalf, he can review any coin in a day or two max.

Cheesy nice one Tongue

So it's really puzzling why SDC continues to remain such a huge underdog compared to DRK and XMR.

I'd guess that the community is the reason. It signals itself in similar ways to pump and dump scamcoins. Especially from the very beginning by getting so involved comparing itself to Bob Surplus' pump and dump Stealthcoin. SDC has never really been presented as a legitimate project like say XMR is, despite the fact that it's apparently turned out to be one with some new tech implementations and such.

That and an above average number of SDC trolls and shills giving it a bad rep.

Without a doubt, the decision to rebrand has opened doors to companies to discuss Dash with that previously did not want to discuss Darkcoin.

... We definitively going on wrong side, people didn't know how to trade  Angry

Why going under 0.01 when the game changer instant X is still here Huh??

This is madness

Some people want quick returns and only care about quick ROI.  Their loss but good luck to them.  Not everybody cares about what a coin does.

Lets face it, all the community unrest over the rebrand has been higher impact than an accidental hard fork.  Combine that with intense trolling and anti dark threads popping up...
