I will tell you what the difference SHOULD be. Religion talk should not be allowed on this forum because this forum is about serious, real world topics.

Religion is a serious topic as long as people commit atrocities in the name of religion.

Science doesn't expect you to take anything on faith.  Everything is science is backed up by evidence you can check yourself.  That is how science works.  If you disagree with the evidence, you have every right to conduct proper research and get your findings published in a reputable periodical.  If your evidence shows you have a better theory for just about anything, you win a nobel prize!

Science doesn't just randomly invent evolution... it simply follows the evidence, and that is the obvious conclusion to the vast majority of people who view the evidence
282  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Should the religion interfere with political issues? on: August 25, 2018, 04:08:11 PM
I would create a system in which I do not know ahead of time whether I will be rich or poor, white or black, Christian or Muslim, etc

If I do not know where I will be born, or what religion my parents will teach me, I would not want religion to interfere with politics

283  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Pennsylvania Catholic Church covers up 300 chomo priests on: August 25, 2018, 04:03:03 PM
Is it a matter of which came first, the priest or the pedophile?

I always assumed it was the prohibition against marriage of priests that led them to this sort of behavior.  But I can also see how being a priest would be enticing for someone who is already a pedophile at heart.  I would not be surprised if some of them were molested by a priest when they were children.  They would have witnessed first hand how easy it is for a priest to get away with it if it happened to them.
284  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The difference between science and religion on: August 25, 2018, 03:16:20 PM
I reject this.

Religious people reject reality all the time, why would this be any different?

I will use an example from medical science.  Ancient Romans used tools for surgery on cataracts of the eye.  After the fall of Rome, this science was lost, but rediscovered in modern times.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTKTq-fnUFQ

People will always have eye problems, and if the science for eye-glasses was lost, that would be reinvented eventually.  Someone will realize that a curved piece of glass warps light in a way that can be beneficial.

Even the first "inventions", the wheel and fire, would be reinvented if lost.  Wheels are useful, people will rediscover how to make a wheel.  It will be just like all the other wheels of the previous generations.  All the science would return one step at a time.

Physics would return the same if lost.  The force of gravity would be the same.  We would discover orbits of planets, and that the Earth revolves around the sun because of gravity.  All this would return exactly the same as before.

Religion is the thing which would return in a completely different form.  Religions today are nothing like religions of the past

286  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Trump's campaign manager Manafort and his lawyer Cohen guilty of 8 felonies each on: August 25, 2018, 12:23:57 PM
Trump isn't the kind of person who can easily throw someone under the bus, and he will perceive not pardoning Manafort as doing so.

LMAO... Trump is exactly the kind of person to throw everyone under the bus.  The very first thing Trump does when someone accuses him of anything, is point the finger at someone else.  What did Trump say when accused of soliciting campaign contributions from foreign countries? "Hillary did it too!"  Trump is extremely narcissistic, he cares only about himself.  He will break any law he sees someone else break.  He wants to be the most corrupt of all politicians, he tries very hard at it

Poor Ted Cruz... thrown under the Trump bus

287  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Evolution is a hoax on: August 25, 2018, 12:15:24 PM
''There is no proof of pure random, just as there is no proof of evolution.'' Claiming there is no proof for quantum theory or evolution theory shows how you argue. I give you evidence and facts, you argue with feelings and beliefs, even quoting the bible. If you think you are smarter than all scientists, go ahead and prove them all wrong, no point in arguing any further.

I don't see any point debating someone who is closed minded and simply makes up nonsense... I'm surprised anyone posts in this thread besides BADLogic

Just block/ignore him and move on with your life like the rest of us
288  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Evolution is a hoax on: August 25, 2018, 01:32:50 AM
Actually, the scientists have responded for decades, now. The impossibility of evolution has been known for a long time. The improbability of evolution was known long before that. Many scientists have responded in this way for a long time. But those who don't are simply denying their scientist nature in themsleves.

In reality, 97% of scientists believe in evolution

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Level_of_support_for_evolution

Quote
The level of support for evolution among scientists, the public and other groups is a topic that frequently arises in the creation-evolution controversy and touches on educational, religious, philosophical, scientific and political issues. The subject is especially contentious in countries where significant levels of non-acceptance of evolution by general society exist although evolution is taught at school and university.

Nearly all (around 97%) of the scientific community accepts evolution as the dominant scientific theory of biological diversity.[1][2] Scientific associations have strongly rebutted and refuted the challenges to evolution proposed by intelligent design proponents.[3]

There are religious sects and denominations in several countries for whom the theory of evolution is in conflict with creationism that is central to their beliefs, and who therefore reject it: in the United States,[4][5][6][7][8][9] South Africa,[10] India, South Korea, Singapore, the Philippines, and Brazil, with smaller followings in the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, the Netherlands, Japan, Italy, Germany, Israel,[11] Australia,[12] New Zealand,[13] and Canada.[14]

Several publications discuss the subject of acceptance,[15][16] including a document produced by the United States National Academy of Sciences.[17]

17 citations for just the opening section... that's enough sources even for BADLogic, right?

I love what is written in Revelation 22:11 King James Version (KJV) “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.

How do you feel about some of the other things written in the bible, like:

Deuteronomy 21:18-21  "If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, ... all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die"

Killing a child for being "stubborn and rebellious" seems a bit extreme if you ask me.  It is also illegal, so please don't follow this biblical advice (from god?!?)

Deuteronomy 22:28–29 "If a man meets a virgin who is not betrothed, and seizes her and lies with her, and they are found, then the man who lay with her shall give to the father of the young woman fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife, because he has violated her. He may not divorce her all his days."

I personally do not think a woman should be forced to marry her rapist.  How much is a 50 shekel fine these days anyway?

WSJ: National Enquirer publisher David Pecker granted immunity
https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/23/politics/david-pecker-immunity-cohen/index.html

Quote
David Pecker, the head of the company that publishes the National Enquirer, was granted immunity in the federal investigation into President Donald Trump's former attorney Michael Cohen in exchange for providing information on hush money deals, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Pecker, the CEO of American Media Inc., told federal prosecutors that Trump had knowledge of Cohen's payments to women who had alleged sexual encounters with him, sources familiar with the matter told CNN. Pecker also provided investigators with details about payments Cohen made to the women, the sources said.
Representatives for American Media Inc. did not respond to a request for comment.

Cohen pleaded guilty Tuesday to eight criminal counts, including tax fraud, false statements to a bank and campaign finance violations.

In court Tuesday, Cohen said, "I and the CEO of a media company, at the request of the candidate, worked together" to squelch stories, effectively implicating Trump himself.

292  Other / Off-topic / Re: what is the Causes of Depression? on: August 24, 2018, 01:44:15 PM
The one and only reason for Depression, anger, sadness is "EXPECTATION"
Think about it, It's always the expectations which are not meant most of the times leads to Depression.

We "EXPECT" something to happen and it doesn't: results in Depression
We "EXPECT" some one to do something as we want it to and he doesn't: results in Anger
We "EXPECT" for something in our favor and it doesn't happen, results in Sadness.

So one needs to learn to hold his expectations and accept things as they are, this reduces the Depression a lot. It comes with meditation and patience.

Cheers.

You are very close, but I would replace the word EXPECT with DESIRE

If I EXPECT rain and it doesn't happen, I am not upset

If I DESIRE rain and it doesn't happen, I am upset because my garden will die without it

If you break it down even further, everything is based in fear.  I fear my garden will not get enough water... I fear I will not have enough food to eat... I fear my wife is cheating on me... even desire is based in fear
293  Other / Off-topic / Re: Difference between teacher and guru? on: August 24, 2018, 01:32:32 PM
To me, a teacher is someone who teaches the material.  You are not required to understand the material to teach it to others.  Many of these are, "do as I say, not what I do" types of people.  Anyone can read from a book and teach people what the book says.

I see a guru as someone who not only talks the talk, but walks the walk - they say and do the same things.  A guru should never ask of you what he would not do himself.  A guru has already walked the path he is asking you to follow.  A guru understands what he is teaching through the wisdom of personal experience.

If a student fails with a teacher, it is the fault of the book.

If a student fails with a guru, it is the fault of the guru.
294  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The End is near ... Bible fulfillment. on: August 24, 2018, 01:15:42 PM
No. People have been saying the end is nigh since the dawn of mankind and I wouldn't pay too much attention to the bible. According to the bible you should kill a lot of people for doing very minor things (working on sundays, talking back to your parents, homosexuals, adulterers, non-believers, non-virgins, entire cities if one person there worships the wrong god)

The bible says a lot of other silly stuff: https://www.salon.com/2014/05/31/11_kinds_of_bible_verses_christians_love_to_ignore_partner/

Growing up in the 90s, I remember all the apocalypse scare of thee time. Parents even freak out over Pokemons. A decade later it's now parent introducing their kids to the game.  Grin

Thing is, whether you believe such things or not, it is clear that such things are supposed to come "like a robber in the night". Insisting you can predict it is pride.

In the 80's it was Dungeons and Dragons
In the 90's it was Pokemon
In the 00's it was Harry Potter

Christians are really scared of... something... not sure what exactly

Christians have been screaming "it is the end times" for 2000 years... this is nothing new

As for Christians being hypocrites and trying to predict the end even though the bible says don't do that... have you seen how many Christians have a tattoo?

295  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why I'm an atheist on: August 24, 2018, 01:04:16 PM
It has surely to do with education. I am sure we get introduced to religion since childhood. Moreover, you learn about it from people you live with it or on daily basis. Maybe you are not ready. Philosophy, science and religion are the same. Their role is to teach people. They just show us what can be done in a society and what should not. I know that science and religion clashes often but it is because people were immature in the past. Philosophy, the mother of all sciences is closely linked to religion. The first universities were created by priests. I believe people are atheist because they lack knowledge or are just not ready to open their heart.

I am not an atheist because I haven't heard of Jesus or read the bible, quite the opposite

I am an atheist BECAUSE I have read the bible... the bible says hundreds of evil things... everything from endorsing slavery, to endorsing murder and genocide... it is an EVIL book.  Period.  End of story.  How would an onmibenevolent God allow people to write such things about him?  If I were God, I would not endorse slavery in my holy book.  Sorry, I cannot accept that

It is simply not possible for God to be omniscient, omnibenevolent, and omnipotent, yet allow evil to exist in the world.  If God was all-knowing, all-loving, and all-powerful, evil would not exist... it's really that simple... the God of the bible is self-contradictory.  This is all the proof you need that god does not exist
296  Other / Politics & Society / Re: God on: August 24, 2018, 03:19:38 AM
Since most of the topics here are mostly about religion, i too would like to create a topic with regards to this.

I would like to question those who consider God as something that is purely fictional. Why did you arrive to this kind of conclusion? Do you have any proofs as to why God is not real? If so, then how could humans existed ? Do you think we came from a single tiny organism? Which through time had landed in this perfectly habitual planet and started to grew body parts?

Im just curious and wanted to hear their side on this

For me it is whether or not a specific God claim has met its burden of proof.  It is not up to me to prove that each of the thousands of god myths are false, it is up to them to prove they are true.  I do not believe any of them have come close.

I don't believe in things unless there is evidence or a logical reason to believe in it.  Some people believe in fairies, but I don't see any evidence for them.  Same goes for gods.

Most people don't believe in Zeus or Thor or any of the old gods... I simply take this 1 step further

To this list should be added nearly a million Gulag prisoners

Whenever someone brings up Russian Gulags, I like to point out that US has been the world leader in imprisoned population since before I was born

This is the pot calling the kettle black.  The US has done as many bad things or worse than Russia.  You simply choose to focus on one and ignore the other

This is no different than right-wingers throwing shade at "socialism" because Venezuela is a shit-hole.  They simply ignore Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Austria, etc., and focus on the 1/100 socialist countries that fails for a multitude of reasons having nothing to do with socialism
300  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why do you believe God exists? on: August 23, 2018, 05:32:01 PM
I think my god, just like any other god, exist because of just one thing—Faith...

The problem with faith is that is does not lead to the truth.  People have faith in 1000 different religions, but that does not make any of them true.  Some people have faith the Earth is flat, ignoring any evidence to the contrary.

Faith is defined as belief without evidence.  Why believe anything without evidence?  Do you believe in unicorns or vampires or leprechauns or gremlins without evidence?
