?  I am connecting through the internet

ack, i meant this
Quote
I changed the port in the Bitcoin app...Settins>Options>Proxy...changed the port from something else to 8333...
Don't change that option in the client, disable like it was in the first place, if you don't use a proxy to connect to Internet.
3542  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Which is the best pool for mining? - A guide for choosing the right pool on: November 13, 2011, 01:19:35 PM
I am getting a new 5830 in the next few days. I propose to set up the card to mine round-robin at PPLNS, PPS and Prop pools over an extended period, just to see how the payments (after adjusting for fees if the pool charges any) stack up against each other. Since there has been a lot of disagreement with PPLNS and intermittent mining and long-term results, i am thinking round-robin setup in cgminer can simulate the intermittent nature of mining. Please suggest:

 * Pool(s) for each category (PPLNS/PPS/Prop)
 * Mining software most suitable for this test run (cgminer seems best to me)
 * What should be the total time frame for the test run - i mean, what time frame is long-term enough to average out the different variance levels?
 * Basis of comparing the earnings - OTTOMH i think it might be ok to compare average reward per share from each pool, but pls suggest better ideas
 * Any other suggestions...

Once set up, I will publish the API key for each pool account so that anyone can monitor the progress.

Ideas?

you don't have to, we have ppl around that can simulate any situation over a long period of time...

thank you both for working on this, @meni hope you appreciate the small donation a sent you for your time, in Europe that buys you a latte Wink. I hope in the future you will try figuring out more things related to score type of payouts under real world production environments.

@organof, until now this seems to be an interesting project to graph and thanks again for starting the "ball rolling".
We only had theoretical figures on every payout system, so this small experiment should make us an idea on the subject and free us from the burden of testing it in a real mining rig for the time being.
I know that miners have to take into account 3 main parameters when choosing their mining profile: self mining efficiency (under miner control), Internet and power connectivity (not always under control), pool variance (pool speed and popularity are two factors that go hand in hand to affect it). Those would be the main variables that depend on lots of sub-parameters on their own. I supposed that any change in one of the three affects payouts some way and preliminary results you and meni posted seem to go that direction too.
Hope you show us some nice comparing graphs soon and help us get more educated in the process  Cheesy

glad to hear that and btw you just told us what you did wrong there... pls disable the proxy option completely if you're not connecting through such a service to internet

Can't most of this confirmation delay problem be solved by simply designing a POS system that can handle pre-paid tabs? I'm pretty sure where I'm going within the next 10 minutes, where I'll be spending money, and generally how much (most of the time).

Merchants could allow you to setup an account in advance and provide you a bitcoin address to send any amount. When you're heading to the grocery store, fire off $100 to your account. By the time you get there, the merchant can see plenty of confirmations to let you shop. When you leave, the store sends the change back to your pre-determined bitcoin address and gives you a printed receipt.

good idea, i was thinking about this few days ago too, every "big store" could use a card system that you can charge with coins before leaving home for example. To receive the card you could tell them the unique address they gave you to send the coins, do your shopping and pay with that. Have an option to keep the change on the card or send back to one of your addresses after paying.
This option opens allot of possibilities for the merchant and resolves the slow confirmation problem with big purchases.

If bitcoin ever starts being used for making small purchases like pack cigarettes, bread, toilet paper and such you have to realize that accepting 0-confirms will not be an issue because once broadcast a transaction will get in a block for sure, it's in the code.

Bitcoin: An Idea Worth Spending (Sorry, TED)

Are you saying my idea is a good one or were you kidding. Was just wondering! Definitely not E-Prime. Allow me to try this again.

So, you like the slogan? Consider it a gift to the community, provided... (Oops! Wrong thread.)

yeah, i really like it indeed, hope others too, it catches your attention in a moment. Good for making flyer's or any kind publicity with it.
I liked the Bitcoin is Better too but you have to bring arguments if you use it to advertise. Thanks for the link Smiley

- slush score would be a good example and easy for all to understand, yes
- the problems will cut share submission and work requests completely.

The graph should contain reference score just like you simulated before and it's equivalent containing real world parameter, miner pool connection, that adds to pool variance as a whole. You take the reference point, can be 1-5 minutes every hour, 1 hour every day or 1 day every month, because it depends on the time frame you choose to sample.

Thanks again for providing this kind of resources to the community, i'm sure some donations will come your way soon and be able to do even more stuff.

I've completed the simulation, and it works well until I try to compare Slush to proportional - for some reason Slush comes out ahead in payouts by 0.7% consistently. Once I either find the source of the error or find out why it's not an error I'll post the results.

nice to hear that, take your time though

@Meni Rosenfeld, awesome, some interesting results should come i'm sure

2. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=51604.0

1. Totalmente de acuerdo.
3550  Economy / Gambling / Re: [StrikeSapphire: REP FRIENDLY] Casino operators, let's talk. on: November 12, 2011, 12:10:09 PM
@ssaCEO

you're doing it wrong. you go on casino forums as a sock puppet and tell all the other American's how you, regular joe schmoe are able to gamble online at this amazing site you found by loading it with MtGox/Tradehill or whatever and then instruct the other forum users how to pay in. 'hey guy's i just cashed out $1k bitcoins through western union at wm-center.com was paid out in 15mins!' or something too for icing. tell everybody all about how you sent your poker winnings to bitcoin2cash.com or whatever and received anonymous cash in the mail. tax free casino winnings through bitcoin? prepare for the hordes of new registrations.

nobody needs to own a bitcoin client, just click withdraw on MtGox right to their pay in casino address. that's the beauty of bitcoin..3rd party loading is no problem because there is no central authority.

then you create gambling blogs written by you called American Gambling Blog or something, and fill it with info about how awesome it is to use bitcoin to cash out anonymously and how easy it is for traditionally banned American players to pay in with step by step instructions.

then you pay SEO people to rank those blogs on google.

then you write a ton of Yahoo questions on answers.yahoo.com like 'Where can American's play online poker?' and answer it yourself with another account 'By using Bitcoin' then link your blogs that also link your gambling site.

notice answers.yahoo.com is always ranked near the top of any search engine. this is just a scratch of the things you can do to promote a casino. remember 99.8% of people have no idea what bitcoin is regardless of how many tech articles you see in the news, it's up to you to create the dead simple step-by-step instruction page with screenshots on how to fund an account or contract an exchanger to do the payments for you like wm-center, technocashier.com, xmlgold....

3553  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Easy one-click to buy with bitcoins solutions? on: November 12, 2011, 12:45:49 AM
In order to make using bitcoins easy and user friendly there obviously needs to be something like one-click purchasing (just like buying with google checkout doesn't require 50 million clicks).

Since bitcoins are typically stored on the user's harddrive and the browser doesn't have access to the harddrive this presents a problem.

Is there something like a chrome extension that manages the user's bitcoin wallet and makes it so that the seller can integrate a special button on their website that the extension understands. A click on that special button executes the code of the chrome extension to send bitcoins since obviously this can't be done through javascript given security issues.

If someone can show me this working as simple as google checkout I would love to see it. Right now using bitcoins is just too damn involved. There needs to be a simple interface.

woot, great idea, a browser plug-in that communicates with a bitcoin process whenever a payment button is clicked.

also the wallet.dat file is still separate from the bitcoin-0.4.0-win32-setup...I assume that's why my wallet is showing empty...how do I merge them so my bitcoins show?

hey, you don't have to "merge" nothing Dashwood, just wait for the bitcoin software, client, to download the blockchain, ~152000 blocks that client will show in the right corner next to connections. It's a bit strange that install wizard starts every time you launch the client, make sure you you do it from the newly created icon after the set-up.

edit: Try to relax, breath slowly and tell if you got at least 1 connection...

ehh, that would be the upper limit of their card withdraw fee, 2% of 750 $. If you exceed 750$ the fee would remain at same level.

How do you know they allow withdrawals of greater than $750?  Pretty big assumption to make.

The "solution" for withdrawing $15K might be make 20 withdraws for $300 in fees.

i don't know things or make assumptions, it's only the way i understand that statement... if they put that high limit assuming no one will be able to withdraw more than 750$ it's not very nice from their part.

Instead you could use some friends help and cash-in on a POS, pay with the card and they give you cash. I do that sometimes. Lower fees and higher limits too

edit: I don't like a small thing though, they locked in the exchange rate of bitcoin > usd much lower than market price and they state "no fees" Sad
3559  Local / Español (Spanish) / Re: Acaparamiento de bitcoins. on: November 11, 2011, 08:24:40 PM

3560  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: OKPAY accepting bitcoin as a deposit method on: November 11, 2011, 08:07:05 PM
Ouch I was expecting fees but those are just downright stupid.

Up to $15 to get my cash from an ATM?  No thanks.  I will keep using free checks from TradeHill.

Sadly if someone did offer a decently priced bitcoin backed debit card they would get all the BTC -> USD flows.  Someday it will happen but it isn't OKPay.

Maybe someday Dwolla will offer a Dwolla debit card?  That would be at least a half step.

ehh, that would be the upper limit of their card withdraw fee, 2% of 750 $. If you exceed 750$ the fee would remain at same level.
