I need posters to help me as I only allow myself one post at a time.

I did do two double posts in this contest. One because buddy did a skip one because I was a bit drunk.

so, if i get drunk, it helps? hey team phil all the way baby

[...] Part of the reason that you are likely going to continue to have fun staying more poor than you otherwise "could have been."

err seems to me the most important thing is that phil you, me and most here, is this: we are still in the game. thats the main goal. we all have btc. profit, while fun, is a bonus.

stack sats. one way or another, just get them and stack them.
405  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: March 03, 2023, 02:28:29 PM

I've overloaded these as well, I really didn't expect to use these UPS for anything else but the following...

1. Stay running for the occasional brownout.. Little flicker off and on.
2. approx. 5min of runtime during a blackout, then power off all servers if power isn't restored.
3. Filter AC power for Pure Sinewave (Hardware longevity)
4. Surge protection

It is a pain to work with them.. they are heavy and awkward because the are small with no handles... Pulling them out of a data rack is no easy task. So I did put this off for a few months. But today I was mentally prepared!

I sometime do laugh when clients think they are meant to keep their server running for hours and hours, like a generator. I told them these are just entry level UPS for the above and if you want something that will run for hours, expect to be paying 50-100x more and build me a new server room to house it!

I have one more at another clients place, 5 years old and same issue... I also replaced another 2 in December 2022...

I have more than 50 of these units scattered all around. So it is a never ending job replacing batteries!

as long as they can hold up for say 5 minutes thats plenty of time to get the house on generator power. any longer is a bonus.

what you say about peeps thinking a UPS will give them hours of run time true. not sure if they just dont read the specs or maybe they do and just dont understand it.

once i ran the just the network video recorder on the racked APC while it was unplugged. i think it showed maybe a 60 watt load (power over ethernet cams).. figured i would last many hours. nope.. maybe 1 hour or so. when i plugged the UPS back in it cycled half a dozen times clicking away like mad. everything hooked to it was fine. but i was wondering if it was going to explode or something. after a while it calmed down, but it was not very impressive when you arent expecting it.
406  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: March 03, 2023, 01:53:33 PM

this one.. APC rack mount 1500VA sinewave

https://www.amazon.com/APC-Smart-UPS-Battery-Rack-Mount-SMC1500-2U/dp/B007ZT2KV6

and man it weighs like a ton.

had it 4 years now no issues. prolly due for new batteries but it passes all self tests.

Just beware. I have an APC of a similar size. Probably not quite as nice but last time I replaced the batteries, it still said it had plenty left but couldn't sustain my server when I pulled the plug.

I have just replace 3 x APC UPS 1500 (Tower) today.. Same issue!.. Little power trip and the entire server shuts down and the UPS reboots... If you are brave, pull the mains power!

Either the UPS will kick over to run on battery OR turn off completely.

If it is stays on, you may notice it drains the battery very quickly.... from 100% to 20% in less than 30secs...

Another thing I noticed was, once you connect the AC the UPS will reboot/re-initialize, causing your equipment to either power cycle or stay off.

The toughest part of the day was lugging 6 x 22AH SLA batteries up the stairs to the comms rack/room. Despite the challenges, these are great UPS units, and it's worth noting that these 3 were still going strong after nine years with their original batteries!

i have 3 of those APC 1500VA sinewave jobs - one rack type and 2 box types that sit on the floor looking big and ugly (so says my wife).

one in the rack (main network, freenas box and NVR) , one on the HTPC and associated audio/video gear and one on the daily driver computer. the "unplug it" test i just did works on them all but i didnt time them, i just pull it for maybe 30 seconds with about 1/2 load.

but yeah new batteries for all of them is on the list as theyre all 4ish years old.. just been lazy as they are (intentionally) way overpowered for the load i have them hooked to.

anything worth doing is worth overdoing i figure.
407  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: NFTs in the Bitcoin blockchain - Ordinal Theory on: March 03, 2023, 12:02:39 PM
glad i found bitcoin in 2011, before all the drama stared to pile on. back then you just used it was meant: unstoppable payments.

consider:

if i had heard of bitcoin during the 2016 block wars well maybe i still would have had go at it but i would of had no clue and prolly fell for fud and bet wrong and lost huge. at that point i would have become biggest the most vocal no coiner you could imagine. FAIL

if i had just heard of bitcoin today with the nft crap i would have spent all of 2 seconds to say NOPE what kinda crap is a payment network that embeds cartoons in the blockchain. FAIL

but here we are.

now, bitcoin has survived worse and im (reasonably) sure it will survive this. but i must say im disappointment in the devs not anticipating how this taproot(?) thing could be abused in such a way as to actually SLOW DOWN monetary transactions by sticking images in it that take up valuable  space for actual transactions.

disclaimer: i know next to nothing about programming so maybe im being too hard on the devs.

the dish has motors (3 axis i think.. ) and does change. ive seen it pointing to varying degrees north and east as well as change its azmith (may have those terms wrong)

anyway it does move, and there seems to be no real pattern. but as long as it works..

btw my starlink and the rest of the network stack are on a UPS.  and i highly recommend a UPS at LEAST for the startlink. turns out if you power it off and on 3 times in a row it resets to a blank password and anyone can then take over your starlink. as starlink didnt bother with a dedicated hard reset switch on the router. so 3 power cycles is how it done.  so of course  3 power glitches in short succession is faily common around here. doh..   gotta wonder sometimes. great tech but the occasional horrid implementation.

typical good gear bad soft ware.

what UPS do you own? there are some good ones out there. with additional battery to add to it.

starlink just became available in my area and im on it now. easy to self install (took about an hour including the roof mount and drilling holes for the cable run. kit comes with everything you need - 2 drill bits (a concrete/masonary bit for the through holes in the foundation, and one wood bit to drill mounting holes on the roof or siding and into studs/rafters, plus a couple kinds of sealers, templates, cable clips for running the line neatly, etc.

and 99.9% uptime so far. speeds are pretty good, faster than any inet ive had available around here by a LOOOOONG shot... although the previous bar was pretty low indeed.

tlrd: starlink rocks... blockchain cranks dling now. and just in time to grab all that bloat from nfts.... ah well progress is progress i guess.

How much speed do you you get with it?

depends on how i measure. starlink app says 183 Mb/s but i think thats wrong. i get a bit over 120 Mb/s (vaires) when dling a steam game for example. ive also seen it as low as 50 Mb/s.

might be my setup.. my setup goes dish -> starlink router+ the optional addon ethernet breakout cable (extra cost) -> to my rack mounted managed switch -> to a wifi AP.. all hardwired. with cat5e

so it depends on what machine is running the speed test on and how its connected. i can go on startlinks wifi, my netgear wifi AP or wired.

still messing with it a bit. theres like 12 devices hanging off it.

what if pi or another of the irrational numbers is the private signing key of God, the universe or whatever else you might call it?

we just need to find the pi to the last digit and presto! we have the private key.

snimple.

What are you running it (starlink) off? Solar power going into a battery bank and then running it directly off the battery pack into the satellite? Does it move or is it stationary? I cannot think why it would use as much energy as you say because if it does not have a motor it should just be pointing at the satellite and if that does not move it just sends the connection back. If it has a motor and follows the satellite I can see why it would use a lot of energy.

My reason is because a lot of countries do not have internet every where. I lot of places in Africa need offline money and sending transactions offline with Bitcoin is difficult. It can be done by giving someone a seed of a set amount but that is not ideal. We need different currencies for different things. Bitcoin is the king when it comes to global transactions but when it comes to local and quick transactions physical might be better not always but in certain times.
Satellite will become more popular and given enough time the whole world will have internet access. The only places that might struggle will be the places where they do not have any power but I think this will improve too. The world is evolving and as soon as Bitcoin takes off the places with no power or internet will be encouraged to develop if the rest of the world is using Bitcoin.

I have to agree with you as satellites will achieve  world wide coverage in the next decade.

thanks for the support.

trying to top him is tough first day in we are tied 22 to 22.

I need a post or 2 to reply to or we may just tie.

So jjg does not have an answer yet.  Wonder what it will be.

well he prolly needs to order a bigger monitor (100+ inches say) so he can have room to fit a proper response in such a limited screen space.

i mean this response could be forum breaking in its length.

meanwhile still fighting buddy
Buddy = 19
Phil = 21

my money is on buddy (no offense). after all just one small code change to its programs posting parameters and boom, no human, and possibly not even non humans such as  GPT3 itself, could win

but anyway im rooting for phil.. CARBON BASED LIFE FORMS UNITE!!!!!!!

edit: maybe a poll is in order? like how many days/months/years/decades it will take for phil to beat buddys post count?

today is seven years since i received my first jalapeno.

i still have it (in the box) and bitcoins too... profit Cheesy

https://imgur.com/a/XtOJQwZ

https://imgur.com/a/8U2qRGA

maybe 1.5 years ago i sold some bitcoins. now, i have my own home. incredible story. Wink

im embarred to admit but i had bfl stuff:

fpga single - the only bfl product that made profit in btc as well as fiat, mainly bedause they were so behind on the SC asics that were to replace them that the fpga single ran way longer.. and at profit.. if the the SC series had come out on time the fpga would of lost both btc and fiat wise.

jalapeno - i had one of the very 1st batch. mainly because it was one of the very 1st (confirmed by joshie) it only lost (slightly) in btc but it did profit in fiat.

SC single - lost both in fiat and btc.

so no matter how you slice it, i would have had more btc if i never bought bfl product, aside from the fpga and that was because bfl screwed up in the SC introduction.

tldr: fuck bfl

edit for nightmare fuel.. what if bfl had become bitmain. dear Lord what a disaster for Bitcoin if that timeline had happened.

I tend to try to summarize on some of my ideas while they are bouncing around in my noggen rather than overly elaborating... otherwise my posts would be longer than they tend to be.

"Summarise" lol you should post the full unedited draft  Grin Grin

good grief no.. i will need to get faster internet or ill never keep up with the forum.
