what is this "brake pedal" you speak of?

starlink just became available in my area and im on it now. easy to self install (took about an hour including the roof mount and drilling holes for the cable run. kit comes with everything you need - 2 drill bits (a concrete/masonary bit for the through holes in the foundation, and one wood bit to drill mounting holes on the roof or siding and into studs/rafters, plus a couple kinds of sealers, templates, cable clips for running the line neatly, etc.

and 99.9% uptime so far. speeds are pretty good, faster than any inet ive had available around here by a LOOOOONG shot... although the previous bar was pretty low indeed.

tlrd: starlink rocks... blockchain cranks dling now. and just in time to grab all that bloat from nfts.... ah well progress is progress i guess.

How much speed do you you get with it?

depends on how i measure. starlink app says 183 Mb/s but i think thats wrong. i get a bit over 120 Mb/s (vaires) when dling a steam game for example. ive also seen it as low as 50 Mb/s.

might be my setup.. my setup goes dish -> starlink router+ the optional addon ethernet breakout cable (extra cost) -> to my rack mounted managed switch -> to a wifi AP.. all hardwired. with cat5e

so it depends on what machine is running the speed test on and how its connected. i can go on startlinks wifi, my netgear wifi AP or wired.

still messing with it a bit. theres like 12 devices hanging off it.

the switch could be 1ghi and if 12 devices are on it you will slow up.

likely the router  is the bottle neck.

still 50 mbs for your low is very good for a satellite.

the Kessler Syndrome is a real potential problem and most sat providers know this...that is why the push has come for low orbit constellations...not only is the performance better due to lower latency but de-orbits are quick and relatively clean

roughly 40k metric tons of dust and debris impact our atmosphere each year

https://www.astronomy.com/magazine/ask-astro/2014/07/space-debris

there has only been roughly 16k metric tons sent to orbit so far

https://space.stackexchange.com/questions/88/what-is-the-total-mass-sent-into-orbit-over-all-history/5779#5779

its good to remember that orbit means falling....at 17 thousand+ miles an hour...molecules stack up quickly at those speeds...and like most of the 100 metric tons of junk that rains down on earth daily it turns into a nice plasma

I would love starlink unfortunately I do not think it is in my area yet and I think it might be too expensive when it is available. I wonder how long it will take to get global coverage and if prices will go down or continue at the current rate. Starlink will probably take over the internet when it is fully running and there will be other companies trying to setup their own satellites or maybe rent them off of Elon Musk and resell the hardware.

100+ speed will be enough for most people but what upload are you getting? I find that ISP provided internet through lines only get a small upload speed compared to the download but I do not know if they are intentionally limiting that because they should have enough resources and the cables can support more then the 20 I get.

I know this might be sci fi talk for now but I wonder if we will ever get DIY satellites and combine that with a Bitcoin node. Maybe not as a professional product but as a fun hobby thing. I guess it would probably be illegal to launch your own satellites though.

the dish has motors (3 axis i think.. ) and does change. ive seen it pointing to varying degrees north and east as well as change its azmith (may have those terms wrong)

anyway it does move, and there seems to be no real pattern. but as long as it works..

btw my starlink and the rest of the network stack are on a UPS.  and i highly recommend a UPS at LEAST for the startlink. turns out if you power it off and on 3 times in a row it resets to a blank password and anyone can then take over your starlink. as starlink didnt bother with a dedicated hard reset switch on the router. so 3 power cycles is how it done.  so of course  3 power glitches in short succession is faily common around here. doh..   gotta wonder sometimes. great tech but the occasional horrid implementation.

typical good gear bad soft ware.

what UPS do you own? there are some good ones out there. with additional battery to add to it.

this one.. APC rack mount 1500VA sinewave

https://www.amazon.com/APC-Smart-UPS-Battery-Rack-Mount-SMC1500-2U/dp/B007ZT2KV6

and man it weighs like a ton.

had it 4 years now no issues. prolly due for new batteries but it passes all self tests.

I am 200 down 50 up most of the time.

I could pay for 1000 down and 150 up but so far I dont need that speed.

I am mostly hardwire eth to a hard wire cable company.

I am not easily convinced.. especially given some of your various nonsenses over the past showing some of your own distractions and even providing frameworks that you present as if they were generally applicable and they show general seemingly ongoing problems in your own approach and thinking in regards to various bitcoin-related matters.. .. and it is likely a waste of time to even try to convince this here gobblin.

Exhibit A... case in point....

hoping for downity.. .. and even more downity, at that.. . shows problems in your perceptions and/or discussions of the matter and where you likely should be in life as a 67-ish year old who has been in bitcoin for around 11 years.. but hey, who am I to say?

Well for my circumstances I am spread 3 ways

uppity
sideways
downwards

Your thoughts are that I am not prepped enough for up

so I pick down over up.

those thoughts  are not the reasons I prefer down or sideways over up at this moment in time.

At this moment I have yet to fill out the mine at what I consider dip or bargain prices for gear.

So I am not perfectly positioned for up.

But my method of buying gear is slow not huge very much a monthly piece very much like dca.

We could use 4-6 new units we got get them all now or go slower .

My risk assessment is go slower do not pluge in and get those pieces today.

Once I get them I don't care about downward dips or sideways.

I could buy all 6 s19 pros today for 9000 but it is stupid and risky. Or I can get one every month and be done by sept.

Most of this is not strict coin purchase or invest meant  it is roundabout method of getting coin.

Als0 being involved with btc 2012 to 2017 was as a non-believer gear head.

being involved  with btc 2018 to 2023 was as a believer.

out our mine with the four of us has done really well in the last 5 years.
