It sounds very interesting so as I understand it then these wallet.dat files were the keys and you don't have a password and all that needed?
yes. wallet.dat files contain a list of private keys. some pregenerated when 1st initialized, other keys added as needed when the pool of keys ran out. early wallet.dat files did not have passord protection, it was added later. Maybe you can compare that with a Google Authenticator or these YoubiKeys or whatever they are called, i.e. a key file?
google auth and yubikeys are whats called two factor authentication (2FA). totally different then a password, seed or keyfile. |

Although hash functions should not be able to go from hash to original (they should not be able to be reversed, and they should be one way), it is not possible to know with certainty that a particular hash function is, in fact one-way. In the past, encryption algorithms that were thought to be unbreakable have been broken by cryptographers.
maybe im misunderstanding something. if i take one megabyte (or 8 megabits) chunk of data and hash it down to a 128 bit hash, how can that be reversed? ie there are more bits information in the original than in the hash. therefore information is irretrievably thrown away, yes? |

Rephrase what I said, according to its context: In the hypothetical event of a total ban, >99% of people here could be easily stopped from using Bitcoin.
for anyone of us in the USA (you know, land of the "free") a government ban would certainly stop almost all of us in their tracks. even if youre not kyc'd anywhere, use tor, decentralized exchanges etc i would wager they would find out anyway. maybe if you live totally off the grid and never go near civilization it could be done but thats not for me. call me a wimp or whatever, i need modern society to live comfortably. especially modern medicine. understand: i HATE kyc and the government snooping in our business to the point they just hoover all info they can to store and analyze for "security/terrorism/etc" purposes even when its not currently useful. as they can always make some law in the future and look back at all that collected data to retroactively get you on some law that doesnt even exist right now. look, i will mess with a lot of things but one entity i wont mess with is the irs. they have NO sense of humor. makes me glad i did not hide my btc gains even before the irs targeted it. call me a wimp but thats what we here in the USA need to do to exist in peace. bleh. |

check the post (sorry its an altcoin but the principle should apply to any coin) I checked the post and I still don't understand why he burned the coins. If he wanted to state his GPG key's fingerprint, he could just announce it with an OP_RETURN message, if Ethereum has any (alternatively, in Bitcoin). No need to remove coins from circulation. i gather he had to burn coin from his miners built in fee address so it had to be eth from that particular address, not btc. so he burned like 20 grand usd worth of eth to show it. unsure about if eth has some sort of equivalent to op_return or some universal way to sign an addy. |

I was never much sympathetic to the people who got Goxed, because it was their damnfool fault for storing coins on a centralized exchange. Even though "not your keys, not your coins" was not yet a meme being stapled to the forehead of every n00b, it was damn obvious from 3-Jan-2009. Storing money in the custody of a trusted party, who may turn out to be incompetent or malicious - wasn't Bitcoin invented so we could stop doing that?
as i recall peeps at that time when it was obvious they were having problems some folks were deliberately buying coins on mtgox at a discount (they were cheap due to loss on confidence of them being able to withdraw) to try and move to another exchange or their own wallets because of the arbitrage opportunity. i believe some managed it and got a bit of profit however we all know what happened to the unlucky ones. It's been so long, but wasn't there a website where you could even trade coins trapped in GOX after they started to shut down? dunno bout that but peeps were offering to buy peoples mtgox accounts after it was shut down for like 10% (or whatever) of the accounts btc value. |
