4261  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: what is the best non-doublewide card out there? on: June 25, 2011, 03:34:07 AM
Just of note, for mining those cards are terrible MHash/$. If you are getting them for gaming though, more power to ya.

can you explain why?  just currious...

the 6850 is $80 more expensive than a normal double slot one.

the 6990 is $170 more expensive than a normal one. (though it is a watercooled unit, which is worth something).

I was hoping for a more "technical" reason...  What are the expected hashing rates of the water-cooled 6990 vs. double-slot 6990?

Because you're paying more. You could buy more video cards with the extra money thus get more power.

You could buy a gold encrusted 6990 for 10k, sure it gets the same performance but the point is you're wasting money.

I wasn't asking for an economics lesson.  My question is about technical differences.  Is the PowerColor LCS AX6990 capable of same hashing rates as a regular dounle-slot 6990?  Are there differences in hashing capabilities?
4262  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: 6990's in stock here: on: June 25, 2011, 03:31:19 AM
Why do you post deals like this?  Are you trying to increase the difficulty level be encouraging new miners?

6990's are a terrible price / performance ratio card anyways.....

because people want them.  and just doing a service to fellow miners.

4265  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: PowerColor LCS AX6990 available (liquid cooling version): on: June 24, 2011, 11:37:18 PM
$900? wtf i hope it can be locked to 2ghz...

For someone who has a cooling radiator/system already, these should be very tempting... if you have the money obviously.

These are not double-wide and take only 1 slot...  You can fit ALOT of these on some motherboards.

They will run in low temps and will be quiet.  You can OC the crap outta them in this config I think...

Would like to hear from anyone who has something like this with these 6990s already going...
4266  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: what is the best non-doublewide card out there? on: June 24, 2011, 11:23:27 PM

4272  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: What PSU do you use with a 4 GPU rig? on: June 24, 2011, 06:46:08 AM
Canary, So you are using TWO rigs to get your 1ghash?

'Cause if you're not using adapters, and your PSU only has four cables (two 6pins, and two 6+2pins), then it can only support two physical cards (not counting on-board GPUs).

I think you are confusing me with gmannn...  and it would be very easy to power his setup... 5830's are clearly covered...

5770 only needs 1 6-pin.  it would be very easy to convert 4 pin molex to 6 pin.  The PSU gmannn is referring to is fully capable of his setup.

Also, cards typically include such molex converters etc...  Don't confuse this with Y-splitters...

Hope this helps.
4273  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: What PSU do you use with a 4 GPU rig? on: June 24, 2011, 05:54:50 AM
a 35 dollar PSU, 600 watts.  powering 2x 5830 and 2x 5770 for a total 1ghash.

How are you powering the four cards? The specs I read show only 2 x PCIe 6+2 cables.  You must be using adapters.

better details here:

2x6 and 2x(6+2) connectors
4274  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Haven't been able to connect since the addition of IP validation on: June 24, 2011, 04:36:08 AM
I tried the day after it went into effect.  All I got was the "ERROR:  Can't connect to Bitcoin:  Bitcoin returned unparsable JSON" message.

I'm trying to connect as follows:

--url http://me.something:pass@api.mining.cz:8332

what am I missing?

Thanks.

Of course, I should be pointing to api.bitcoin.cz ... still can't connect.  Have deleted and re-entered my IP into the whitelist several times.

try "telnet api.bitcoin.cz 8332" from a command prompt. if you timeout and don't connect, it ain't your mining software and setup causing you issues.  you will then have to look to your network as the source of the problem.  if you do connect, then something isn't right with the mining client...  give it a try...

Ah, ok ... right.  It attempts to connect.  So my machines can see the server.  For whatever reason, DiabloMiner is not connecting properly.  ;-(

Can you confirm that it actually connects using telnet?  If it only says attempting to connect then you are not connecting.  If telnet connects, most likely you will see a blank window with a blinking cursor in top left (on windows).  If it tells you that it's attempting to connect and eventually times out like this:

C:\>telnet blah.blah 8332
Connecting To blah.blah...Could not open connection to the host, on port 8332: Connect failed
C:\>

then it's not your mining client...

4276  Bitcoin / Mining / what is the best non-doublewide card out there? on: June 24, 2011, 02:00:13 AM
I'm trying to determine what is the best (in terms of highest attainable MHash/s ) non-double width card?

What is the thinnest card if you account for the heatsink/fan?

Thanks!
4277  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Any place that x6990s aren't sold out? on: June 23, 2011, 05:29:33 PM
-You can fit up to 4 of them for a total of 8 GPU's on a big motherboard

good luck getting opencl to run on more than 4 gpu cores

no longer an issue with ver 11.6
4278  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: 6990 in stock here: on: June 23, 2011, 05:01:18 PM
Can someone explain to my why 6990's... from what I've read you can get about 700 mHash out of them which is no doubt a good rate but that's still $1.06 mHash, seems like there are cheaper options?

the idea is that you can fit more GPUs into 1 rig.  1 card = 2 GPUs as opposed to 1 card=1GPU.
