Claimed they were confiscated in customs,

Professor, I sense you are having difficulty coming to grips with the reality that that man is an unprincipled slug who deserves no further business, nor even any further recognition as a contributing member of the bitcoin community.

After all, it's not like the case of BFL, where one can at least argue that there are no innocent victims; the customers were greedy followers of an illusion of free money and learned the lesson of that.

The failure on the part of Avalon destroyed many in the open source community who expended time and treasure in the belief that the chips would be delivered.

For example, the Klonkike developer, BKKcoins, has completely disappeared.  While one might hope that he got a great job out of the effort and left bitcoin behind, I fear that that is not the true outcome.

He asked a specific question and didn't look for a lecture.  Whatever someone does with their money is their business, not yours.

The confiscation idea might stem from the chips "being held at customs" and them (Avalon) receiving "real life threats".  Therefore, the "confiscation" is more of a theory than backed by supporting evidence.  The only thing we know is that 1) Yifu stated chips were held at customs 2) Yifu stated team members were receiving real life threats.  Anything else beyond that is a theory (One can even argue that #1 and #2 are lies - it's basically a mess as their answers to the community answer nothing).

I'm absolutely not defending Avalon.  I'm just reiterating what was stated.  Anything beyond that is a theory that may/may not be true.  Also, I'm leaning towards not doing business with Avalon in the future.

Thanks.  I remember reading the "held at customs" news that Yifu posted.

Can batch #3 fans plug into a batch #2 (bitmine.ch) control board?
564  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: YIFU IS AUCTIONNING? on: October 15, 2013, 12:02:39 AM
All 500 units have been bid on now.  The price is starting to rise above 2.000 BTC.

565  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Stolen hard earned 92 BTC - DONATE initiative or HELP ? on: October 14, 2013, 11:57:44 PM
No 2FA and using mt gox as a web wallet, you deserved it. This is a lesson and you will never do that again and you will now invest more time in security.

Also you have skills instead of asking for donations go and hustle and get jobs in the community and earn it back, you could earn 92 BTC pretty quickly with your job skill and a good price point.

No, he does not deserve it.  The other guys is a criminal.

Is there a place to buy Batch #3 parts?
567  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: October 13, 2013, 03:42:47 AM
There are about 240 new Avalons, 2 module, 60 GH/s, at auction for 2 BTC.

When I go to the line all I get is a blank screen. Sad
Same here

This auction ends Tuesday, Oct 15, 2013 at 12 PM EST.

The minimum bid at the moment is 2 BTC.
There are about 240 miners that have not been bid on.
They are announced as 60 GH/s, 2 modules, overclocked frequency 275 MHz, 160 chips, 595 W

It seems odd that you can't see the auction standings without submitting identity documents.

Do you know if shipping is free?

I can see this page on Chrome incognito, so maybe you can see it too.  It says they deduct the winning funds and ship the product.  No mention is made of paying more for shipping.
That is not the same thing as saying the shipping is included.

Is it possible to use a version 1.5 avalon controll unit(FPGA) to run a 4 module version 3 Avalon?

I am running a batch 3 module & 3 @ batch 2 modules with a version 1.52 controller (Batch 2, delivered in July).

what do you need to do it? Ive tried to no avail.

Photos, cgminer configuration, and symptoms?

I plugged in the ribbon cable & a power cable into their respective slot 4 positions.
I changed the number of miners from 24 to 32.
The holes that attach the heat sink to the bottom place are not compatible.  I affixed 1 screw to the heat sink, and tried not to move the miner very much.  The module had to be installed at an angle for the header to fit.

I ran it this way for many weeks with the Golden 850 or whatever brand power supply, but I felt nervous about drawing 1030 W from the wall, and bought an OCZ ZX Series 1250W and installed it a few weeks ago.  This seemed to be a good power supply and is on the known good list on the avalon wiki.  I did (have to) remove 1 of the top plate mounting screws, as the power supply is a little taller than the original.

Today, I received the expansion module for a Batch #2 unit, and I did a swap out between the batch #3 and the batch #2 4th modules.  My Batch #2 unit is now an Avalon stock unit, with the replacement OCZ power supply and an Avalon (4th) expansion module.

I also have a 2nd machine.  It is a fire damaged Batch #3 unit.  I bought a controller, cables, PDU, and thermometers from bitmine.ch.  This is all Batch #2 compatible equipment.  The PDU is mounted on the original mounting holes.  The controller is freestanding.  The Golden 850 power supply from my Batch #2 is mounted inside the case.  I have a fire damaged module with 6 good sub-assemblies, and I am hosting another Batch #3 module for a 3rd party.  So, this Frankenstein unit is a mish-mash of Batch #2 & Batch #3, Avalon & 3rd party equipment.  It is currently mining at 256 MHz without the thermometers installed, and using an external fan.

What an adventure.

Is there anywhere transcripts I can look at?  In the matter of taint I think it's an either or issue.  Either taint is something to be handled or nothing is to be done at all.  If it is going to be addressed it will likely fracture bitcoins into some sort of two tiered legal and illegal bitcoins.  It should come to the forefront fairly quickly though in Mr Trendon Shavers case.

Developer Maxwell is a strong proponent of mixing to preserve privacy, and of the necessity of fungibility to preserve the health of bitcoin.  He also has a thread titled "I taint rich" that gives some deeper insight into transactions and the current ideas of taint.

I find his arguments persuasive, but I also find myself deeply unhappy about the theft issue.  Before I studied his arguments, I developed the following scenario.  This is a broad brush concept, the devil & his details have not yet been subjugated.

I have tried to find a scenario where miner's make clean coins, theft is reported to the block chain, the original victim gets restitution, bad guys can't benefit from false theft reports, and most coins are clean.

A claim of stolen coins could be made by sending a payment from the stolen address to a well known address 1Stolenwhatever, another payment to the theft receipt address, and change to an address <new good address> with a public comment giving the TXid of the theft.  The payment to the theft receipt address is important so that they have (legal) notice of the theft claim.  A simultaneous transaction would deposit coins into the stolen address.
In the case of coins that are stolen, I would assign (a user defined) value to the stolen inputs to the theft transaction, e.g., "0"
I would then trace all the inputs to the transaction being considered starting from freshly generated bitcoins.  That transaction would have a face value input, and a "tainted value" input.  All outputs from that transaction would carry the weighted value of output.
Please notice that inputs from the compromised address before the theft transaction carry their full value.
Any transactions in the block with the notice are still "clean."
By choosing coins that have a large number of confirms (a possible wallet source change), it is very unlikely that stolen coins will be propagated quickly, so exposure of innocent bystanders is minimized.

Now, there is a policy decision.

I would force a miner's fee to a tainted transaction.
Inputs that are 1 transaction after the notice forfeit 10% of the taint value to the miner's fee.  Thus miners have incentive to adopt this policy.
The new address receives half of this miners fee as new coins, so the miner and the victim split this insurance payment.
The taint of the outputs is re-calculated to account for the amount of restitution (not including the miner's fee).

So, in time, the victim gets restitution, miner's are paid for protecting bitcoins, the theft victim gets to report coins as stolen, and old coins are presumably clean and can be spent with confidence.

It might be necessary to reduce the amount of restitution if the victim does not make a prompt report.  For example, we don't want coins reported as stolen 5 years after the theft.

This is not a polished solution, and the numerical amounts need to be adjusted.  I do think it is a good starting point.

If you have a good quality 850W PS (like the Enermax B3 shipped with) then a 4-module @ 335mhz pulls about 105+Ghash using 940W from the wall for me....

if im not mistaken, B2 came with the same enermax 850 - but 940 from the wall could cause it to die no?

im tempted but only slightly, im more scared than excited

Well 850W is the DC rating of the PS.  AC draw from the wall will be higher, based on where you are in the efficiency curve of the PS.

Lets say for the sake of argument the PSU is 90% efficient at 850W with full 100% load.  When supplying 850W DC the AC draw would be ~944W.

But the reality is not all 850 PS' are equal either.  Some have multiple rails, some are over-rated.  What you really need to pay attention to is the rating of the 12V rail.  My PC Power and Cooling 910W rated 74A on the 12V rail running a B3 @ 335mhz pulls about 15-20w MORE than the B2 850w Enermax (same 335mhz), and I am not sure if this is due to the age/rating of PS (80 Silver) or if there is an actual difference in draw between the B2/B3 machines.

My rig is running 4 mouules at about 355 MHz.  It pulls 1000 W from the wall with the OCZ 1250 power supply.  With the Avalon powered 850 W power supply, it pulled 1030 W from the wall.

Is there any easy way of getting a forth module for a Avalon?

I have a B1 and B2 that I would love to get a 4th blade/module for.

Thanks,

They are available in stock from Avalon.

Who's to say they didn't have large amounts before SR got busted? They could of been early miners easily.

LOL.  They could be Satoshi.
