701  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you USE your BTC? on: May 18, 2014, 04:23:28 PM
I have a store that accepts bitcoin to spread the word about bitcoin to others - more or less.

Use your bitcoin to get others to talk about bitcoin today - see signature
702  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ebay - the first tech giant to accept Bitcoin? on: May 17, 2014, 01:59:14 PM
are there any sites like ebay with feedback and stuff that use only bitcoins?
A few people in this thread have asked why ebay-style sites don't already exist, or how long it will be until they do.  We launched CryptoThrift back in November 2013 to fit precisely this market.  We have grown steadily in that time whilst our competitors such as BitMit have failed. We now have over 5000 active users, process thousands of transactions a month, and average upwards of 100k visitors and 750k page views a month.  But clearly we are not doing enough advertising and marketing if we have not yet been mentioned in this post. Smiley  Thankfully we are about to embark on a several campaigns with high-profile publications/websites so hopefully you will hear more of us!

To address one of the other points raised on how to handle payments between buyers and sellers, we have approached this via a built-in and automated escrow service.  Buyers pay for their purchases by sending to our escrow wallet, sellers are notified that their funds are in escrow so can ship the item, buyers release escrow when they receive it (or it happens automatically after 30 days if the buyer doesn't dispute).  With this approach we can offer refunds to buyers if they don't receive their goods, or there is any kind of dispute over quality.  We obviously need to treat refunds on a case-by-case basis but this is no different to paypal disputes.

It is free to list but we charge sellers 2.5% on successfully sold items and buyers 1% if they wish to use our escrow service.  All of our profits go into enhancing the site, new hardware, establishing our company (now registered with ASIC in Australia), and advertising & marketing, and will do so for some time yet.  So why are we doing it for no profit?  Because we agree that eBay are unlikely to accept Bitcoin anytime soon, but equally that there is a market that needs to be filled.  And if we do the hard work now, put our money back into building this service, and build a competitive site, we wont need eBay to ever accept Bitcoin Smiley  So please try us out... https://cryptothrift.com
I've seen your store before -what are the most popular sellers.  I'd give it a try but it reminds me of standard bitmit which was cool it seemed like there was no traffic there?
703  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Which Bitcoin trading sites are reliable and stable? on: May 17, 2014, 01:47:01 PM
Now, what Bitcoin trading site are reliable and stable?

That is a trick question, what do you want?

  • Exchange where individual buyers and sellers trade actively between each other for a small percentage fee
  • BTC single party buyer or seller that gains from the price spread such as Coinbase or bitsimple
704  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Hi, would you recommend to overclock an avalon clone 200ghs to 1400?? on: May 14, 2014, 06:17:06 AM
Hi, would you recommend to overclock an avalon clone 200ghs to 1400??

You wouldn't - Avalon clone wasn't over-engineered enough to be able to dissipate nearly that much heat in the traces.  You are guaranteed to generate magic black smoke if you try to.  Perhaps the jump to 300 or 350 maybe, but not 1400

There are offspring of some offspring of billionaires among the current MIT student body. And there are students from international locations studying there, such as Africa, Latin America and Asia.

707  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: ipv6 nodes on: April 29, 2014, 08:51:03 PM
Hallo

I run a node with ipv6 connection only.
Here I noticed some things.
 - the client try a lot of ipv4 nodes
 - there are only a few connections to my node (most was 20)

is this normal?
Are there so less ipv6 nodes?
Are there options to tune for ipv6 connections?

Wouldnt this be expected due to the low number of IPV6 isp providers?
708  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Can i mine on: April 29, 2014, 03:21:16 AM
okay the answer is - YES!

goto bitminer.  Sign up.  download their java client.  Let'er rip!

You will see something like .00000000001 BTC per day, but there you have it!

Maybe you could pull between 3-7 KH/s using a CPU.

If you absolutely must mine - then consider buying a block erupter for maybe 10 dollars and use that to mine with on bitminter.

The bitminter java applet does detect cpu and integrated graphics (the last time I used it was last year though so I could be wrong).  It is the most painless way to begin mining bitcoin.

The manual way would be to use something like BFGminer.  No software you download will make you mine any faster which is why you see people using external hardware to mine now a days.  I suggest the block erupter as the cheapest way to get into bitcoin mining although it will likely not make its money back. (expect a lifetime profit of maybe 30 to 60 cents for that 5 dollars invested)

I've written about mining multiple times here, on reddit and on my own storefront blog here if you're interested in more information.
709  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: HashFast announces specs for new ASIC: 400GH/s on: April 29, 2014, 03:12:32 AM
And you are putting your faith in a "man" that can't even tell a reflection from a spot on a chip and claims to be an engineer. Wow... you guys are up the proverbial shit creek if that's the caliber of intelligence you can bring to bear upon Hashfast.  Good luck!

Wow the trust rating on you - btw, I am curious, how are your own units coming along?  Why is it that now HF and VMC copied your pcie layout?
710  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Price on: April 29, 2014, 03:11:07 AM
There might be another dip before May 10, you know may 10 is another china ban... But its a good time to accumulate if it hit about $400.
Do the prices usually go back up after bans in china? Should I buy some bitcoin on May 10 if it does drop significantly?
May 10 is when btc will become unbanned in China and then on May 24, it will be banned again.

Ok, when do you recommend I buy/sell bitcoin? Should I buy before may 10?

You should buy more coins. Now.

711  Other / Off-topic / Re: I dont think we should evolve any longer as humans on: April 29, 2014, 03:07:11 AM
I think we are still evolving. With our continues over usage of brain, reading, typing and proper nutrition we will become taller, bigger would have bigger heads, wider eyes long hands and fingers in the future 10000 -30000 years from now. But some other groups may may evolve differently.

That sounds correct

Everyone here thinks too much like a 'human'  in 30000 years or more there is no more "human" - we are laughted at like neanderthals.  Consider the following:

in 30,000 years, heck in 5000 years, we would be considered cavemen by our offspring because of things like:  Pride, Jealousy, and Hatred.  Those things are what cause WAR right now still to this day in 2014.  There is no side-stepping this facet.  Eventually, rationalization will either come to a logistical 'cold/calculated' utilitarianistic 'I kill for the sake of us all'  'I die for the sake of us all' or we will evolve to Euphemize it.  Events will become more efficient - think no more lines for food, no more lines for banks.  No more jail time/justice system - only execution or stasis.  Perhaps we will be able to involve a type of cryostasis where your real jail time is simply an hour - but the perceived jail time is Years/Decades/Centuries (a prison trap in your mind).  Space is only colonized for the economic gain from the available raw materials.  Those raw materials could include exterior habitable planetary moons or stations - but these new 'habitats' will only be accessible by the wealthiest whom control the lions share of our resources.

WE WILL NOT GROW WINGS NOR LONGER WIDER HANDS NOR TALLER.  Those evolutionary adaptations only occur when they are NECESSARY ADAPTIONS REQUIRED FOR CONTINUED SURVIVAL - if keyboards grew from trees and we only used those grown from trees, then maybe those who had longer fingers may benefit?  But otherwise what happens is - humans adapt their surroundings and resources to better fit our constraints (that is, we adapt things to better fit our desires)  Thus, we would rather create ergonomic cars, keyboards, drinking containers to appeal to the masses before we develop the need to evolve over a long timescale.    Humans NEVER grew wings because there was never an evolutionary advantage into doing so.  If over the course of 10s of millions of years, we found that a small thin fold of skin helped us glide to food/safety more often than not, then we would have slowly grown longer and thinner flaps of skin until they became the wings necessary to fly.  We lost hair over the course of evolution because it was no longer as necessary once we started killing other wild beasts and using their hides for warmth and protection - thus we evolved to lose it.  Humans will likely retain their height and averageness - We don't get collectively smarter unless something drastic happens and kills off the majority of average citizens.  Smart folks are few and far between - a vast majority of 'smart' people today are simply parrots - taking what they read from textbooks and the internet and repeating it to your face ad nauseum.  Smart folks will actually take knowledge and create new things from this gained knowledge.  Smart folks will look at the status quo for any given particular process and will place it upon themselves to refine or improve the status quo process.

713  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Residents of Ohio, contact your representatives ASAP! on: April 29, 2014, 02:30:15 AM
Why is this a big deal?

Its similar to the rule = you can't buy giftcards with other gift-cards, cash/credit only.

I'm not necessarily trying to troll - I just want a reasonable answer as to why this is a 'big deal' that alcohol is banned from btc purchases in ohio?

old new - New article though.  thanks!
716  Other / Off-topic / Re: Bitcoin h8r I have a special understanding of why a lot of people don't like it. on: April 27, 2014, 08:15:06 AM
People hate it because the act of mining is utterly worthless and a waste of resources. They hate it because regardless of what proponents say it is deflationary and not effective long term as a currency. They hate it because the concentration of large holders is unappealing.
Then others hate it because right now anyway it is unstable.

These 'bagholders' ought to think of Laszlo Hanyecz next time around - without him you probably wouldn't be in bitcoin.
717  Economy / Computer hardware / WTS Openrigs.com 8 gpu rig frame with all attachments and screws $160 USD on: April 27, 2014, 07:19:35 AM
This one is not the stackable frame version.  BTC, DOGE, and LTC accepted.  It is boxed and ready to go.  Only will accept escrow from forum members here with hero or senior status.  I am posting photos of the packaged gear which was receved today from openrigs.com  I already procured a different frame kit and do not plan to build anymore scrypt gpu rigs anytime soon.  Kit includes:

Vitalia Standalone GPU Frame
  - GPUs: 8 GPUs
  - Add-ons: Pre-Drilled Bolt Hol..
  - Add-ons: Nut and Bolt Set
  - Add-ons: Full Thumbscrew Set

If you plan to buy directly from openrigs.com expect a wait time of over 3 months - I have this available immediately because rather than waiting I bought a different frame earlier on.  Now I have this for sale.
718  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Annual 10% bitcoin dividends if mining were Proof-of-Stake on: April 25, 2014, 04:32:05 AM
I find it ironic that Peter is arguing so strongly in favor of the seemingly inferior PoW system, when he is the one who recently proposed the perfect solution for shifting from one blockchain to another.

The adoption of Bitcoin is apparently mathematically chaotic in the sense that certain small changes to the present situation lead to large and unexpected consequences. There is simply no precedent for Bitcoin, and therefore we depend upon argued imagination.

Sorry - I read the 1st post and then skipped the last 9 pages.

Shouldn't PPC have been the one end-all to be all had proof of stake had been successfull wouldn't the mass majority of miners simply convert to PPC and hold a portion of it to roll over with POS?

"makes me dream of folks out there who have 10,000,000 PPC and recieve a cool million PPC each year to live off of Tongue "

720  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Bitcoins are going no where I am frustrated with BTC on: April 25, 2014, 03:52:43 AM
lol i think he is talking about a 'direct debit'
i.e they pull money out of your bank account.. after you verify/sign it in some way at the start.

but yeah you are right.. in theory they could rob you blind.
as could any company who does it.

i have direct debit with my car insurance, health insurance etc etc.. you kind of need to trust the company won't do that.

DONT TRUST MERCURY INSURANCE they upped my rates with no notification and refuse to cancel direct payments without a faxed letter - who uses FAX machines anymore???  what is this, 1994?
