721  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin needs Regulation to save itself from Forex traders! on: January 21, 2015, 05:05:49 PM
If bitcoin needs our regulation to live, then let it die.

^ this.

If you want regulation, chose some other form of currency/investment.
Bitcoin is all about free unregulated markets if you ask me.
722  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin companies raising capital on: January 21, 2015, 05:04:21 PM
New to the forum, hoping not to be breaking any guidelines by sharing this event.

Our firm (Dealflow.com) assists companies in marketing their capital raising efforts. Next week, January 29th, we are having an exclusive webcast with a collection of Bitcoin related companies that are actively seeking financing. We hope this event brings even more attention to the industry and I wanted to share the link with your community.

Registration is completely free and is available at http://bitcoin.dealflow.com.

Thanks for reading.

I think you should put the thread in marketplace
723  Economy / Speculation / Re: Do you think Ponzi affect the price of bitcoin ? on: January 21, 2015, 05:02:40 PM
hey, I just wanna ask to you all. Do you think ponzi affect the price of bitcoin??
Everything is connected. Of course bitcoin ponzis affect the price, but only marginally.
Just like dollar ponzis affect the price of a dollar.

I would not really worry about it, unless you think bitcoin is a ponzi itself (then there is something seriously wrong with you Wink )
724  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What main reasons are there against tinting coins? on: January 21, 2015, 03:10:26 PM
I think Bitcoins will be well tinted at end. Since BTC community will kneel infront of banks and governments as long they will help with adoption. That si why i dont see Bitcoin will be main world currency on long run.

If bitcoin 'needs' banks and governments for adoption there is something wrong in my opinion.

Just like we don't need banks and government to love certain music, it should be your own choice.

They can and already do have a major influence on bitcoin, unfortunately.

We all have influence, whales even more.
But there is something wrong when we are dependent on them.

726  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: unconfirmed transaction on: January 21, 2015, 02:24:57 PM
The transaction has been cancelled/removed from the blockchain because took long time to confirm.

The transaction reappears on blockchain.info now.
OP, did you broadcast it again to the bitcoin network just now?

So for my understanding.
It is possible to make a transaction, reject it/cancel it, and send it again (with additional fee?)?
Very confusing.
727  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can't understand the next block halving and it's impact on the price. on: January 21, 2015, 02:22:34 PM
In short, there's a stable amount of new Bitcoins which are created everyday, this is a kind of inflation which puts downward pressure on Bitcoin's price (since many miners, well probably the vast majority of them, instantly sell them).

Block halving simply means that half of the current amount of Bitcoins will be created every day, so there's less negative impact on the price.

What an easy explaniation, thank you so much, apperciated a lot.

Another question please if you don't mind, why I see people talking about that the price will spike up to $1,000 and more ?!

What do you think ? And when will the halving occur, in 2016 ?

Thank you.

In my opinion this is more less a big wish that price will skyrocket and people become rich Smiley

Rich in terms of what? Dollars?
You should do the following thought experiment:

What if people paid you 100000000000000 USD for 1 satoshi, would you do it?
The answer is yes, because it is a pretty good deal for toilet paper.

728  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What main reasons are there against tinting coins? on: January 21, 2015, 01:53:59 PM
What are the main reasons for tinting coins? I don't see why coins should be marked in this way. What real benefits does it serve?

Somehow restricting criminal activity? I know, it's a tough thing to sell.
How does tinting coins solve anything? if the criminal is anonymous and using anonimizers and whatnot..

What we need is decentralized exchanges. Im not trusting normal exchanges no matter how much you tint the coins.
Decentralized exchange means earning and spending the coins like currency.
In the end we should not bother too much with converting to old fashion stinky fiat.
729  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: unconfirmed transaction on: January 21, 2015, 12:57:34 PM
The transaction has been cancelled/removed from the blockchain because took long time to confirm.

What is determining the time? When does it take too long?
Does it have something to do with orphaned blocks?

730  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What main reasons are there against tinting coins? on: January 21, 2015, 12:54:07 PM
What main reasons are there against tinting coins? Why shouldn't we begin tinting coins, such as the ones from the bitstamp hack that ended up in an address for a little while.

Unless you can arrange it in a decentralized way, I'm against it.
There must be consensus about it because Bitcoin doesn't care about the 'rightful' owner of the coins.
He who owns the private key is the owner.

I know that bit, the part about ethics is where this comes into play. I doubt anything will come out of anything that is enough to convince top-level people to implement tinting coins but nonetheless it is an interesting topic to discuss.

But who would be the 'top-level' people? The developers?
The developers can only try to convince us to use a fork with tinting feature.
I will not use it and I think many will not.
If the majority will use it, I will have to join them I guess.

732  Economy / Speculation / Re: "Bearwhale" doesn't exist on: January 21, 2015, 12:08:48 PM
Bearwhale is an urban legend. What you see is the normal free market. No manipulation to the downside just the impact of the new mined coins being dumped every day.

If there was manipulation in the market it has always only been to the upside.

I dismiss the bearwhale-theory as an urban legend.

A bearwhale to me means a lot of little bears combined together.
Once they know they are wrong, they will all go long again.
Bears are afraid and just looking at each other waiting for the first move.
733  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Can I hold a short position for months or years ? on: January 21, 2015, 12:04:47 PM
Can I hold a short position in BTC vs any other for months or years ? Please restrict to top five exchanges only as liquidity alone defines an exchange.

Thank you

You could passively short bitcoin by just not buy them or sell everything for cash and wait.
734  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: unconfirmed transaction on: January 21, 2015, 10:01:22 AM
Well, then at least it would be great if there's a button to add a transaction fee to an unconfirmed transaction

[...]
You cant actually "add" a fee to an existing transaction.
[...]

tl;dr: This^.

slightly longer:
A transacation spends inputs of a certain value, e.g. 2 inputs with value 0.0001 and 0.01. If you make a transaction that spends these two inputs into one output (e.g. to an address [payto pubkey hash]) and pay no fee, the other party gets 0.0101 BTC. If you wanted to "add" a fee you would have to create a new transaction and to still spend 0.0101 BTC you would need different inputs, because you would need at least 0.0102 total value. The fee is sum_of_inputs - sum_of_outputs = fee (rest)

This is because they way bitcoin works an input (formerly received transaction you can spend) has to be used entirely. Thats why there is the concept of change and changeaddresses. If your input is higher in value than the transaction you want to create you need to send the rest (minus the fee) somewhere else, preferably to yourself.

The great thing about most wallets is that you dont even have to care or know about all this. They handle this for you. The "downside" is that you (usually) have to pay a fee Wink

Edit: The way bitcoin core/qt currently calculates the fee is very static and this is to be changed in the future. IIRC the concept is that core/qt analyses the last few blocks and calculates a fee based on your "target" how many blocks you are willing to wait. This will greatly improve the way fees are calculated.

Thank you for the detailed answer.

735  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: unconfirmed transaction on: January 21, 2015, 09:33:07 AM

Gee, that's quiet a hassle if you ask me.

Indeed. Many new users make such mistake without knowing about priority, fees and confirmation times only to get into dilemma.

What would be nice to have is - if your transaction hasn't been confirmed yet, you can click on a button which allows you to -
- cancel the transaction
- broadcast again with revised fees

How would the "cancel the transaction" button work. Maybe your TX is allready part of some miners attempt to find a new block? A button like this would create a feeling of reversabilty that has nothing to do with the inner workings of the protocol. A good wallet will prevent this and most wallets do.

Well, then at least it would be great if there's a button to add a transaction fee to an unconfirmed transaction
736  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 20, 2015, 11:41:42 PM
yea, those fuckers know where the money is: exchange and trading fees.

bitcoin price? who cares? we can charge fees for every transaction even if bitcoin is trading at 10 $.

Bravo... is this so hard to understand? Bitcoin will do the same job regardless the price

Right on many things, except for liquidity.
How would you ever want to do a transaction bigger than the current market cap with current prices?
737  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: unconfirmed transaction on: January 20, 2015, 10:38:12 PM
-snip-
How does one stop a broadcasting? I mean, when you hit the send button, how can you stop it?

Depends on the wallet. In bitcoin core you need to shut it down, remove the TX from the wallet.dat file with an appropriate tool (e.g. pywallet) and wait a bit. A single night waiting did it for me, but anyone could keep broadcasting your TX. Maybe someone you wanted to pay, etc.

Gee, that's quiet a hassle if you ask me.
I assume 'they' will make this easier in future version of the wallet, no?
I also assume you should take this approach to re-send the coins if they fail to confirm. I saw people talk about adding a transaction fee after the first transaction was made am I right?
738  Other / MultiBit / Re: Multibit question on: January 20, 2015, 10:12:39 PM
Can you import private keys from electrum to Multibit? I'm considering making the move from electrum to Multibit.

Easiest way is always just transfer the coins to the new wallet with new addresses.
Why hassle with old private keys?
The only reason I can come up with is that you have some vanity addresses you would like to reuse.
Of course don't delete the old wallet, just put it somewhere safe.

It is a vanity address which I would be using but I guess I can always generate another with the same prefix thanks for the help.

Well, I did not say it was impossible, there still might be way to convert.
But if you have a short prefix it would not cost too much effort to generate a new one.

hello memberz,
i have unconfirmed transaction more than 2 days, its normal?
https://blockchain.info/tx/bd8f34fd5b3a25103771af814f2159d51cdf4a62603603ea46fc32cf4506ea31

This link says "transaction not found" for me.
Sure it is the right link?

OP probably stopped broadcasting the TX.
