941  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Ethereum: Welcome to the Beginning on: November 15, 2023, 02:48:01 PM
https://cointelegraph.com/news/ethereum-rollups-gold-standard-revisit-plasma-buterin
"Ethereum’s rollups are ‘gold standard’ but Plasma needs a revisit — Buterin
Vitalik Buterin called the early Ethereum scaling solution Plasma “underrated” and a “significant security upgrade” for chains that would otherwise be validiums.
Plasma, a once-prominent Ethereum layer-2 scaling solution, should be revisited by teams currently working on zero-knowledge (ZK) Ethereum Virtual Machines (EVMs), said Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.
Invented in 2017, Plasma diverts data and computation — except deposits, withdrawals and Merkle roots — to an off-chain environment."

Raft Suffers $3.3M Exploit That Drove Down Stablecoin 50%, but Hacker Likely Lost Money on Attack
https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2023/11/10/defi-platform-raft-suffers-33m-exploit-but-hacker-likely-takes-a-loss-on-the-attack/
"Decentralized finance (DeFi) platform Raft lost some $3.3 million in ether (ETH) after being hacked Friday afternoon – but the attacker may have suffered a loss on the heist.
On-chain data shows that the attacker drained 1,577 ETH from Raft, then sent 1,570 ETH to a burn address – destroying most of the stolen assets and leaving only 7 ETH for themselves. The hacker's address received 18 ETH via crypto mixer service Tornado Cash before the attack, blockchain data on Arkham shows, likely to fund transactions.
After executing the transfers and paying the blockchain fees, the exploiter's crypto wallet was left with only 14 ETH, fewer funds than the initial 18 ETH.
This means that they face a 4 ETH loss on the whole maneuver."

This is very rough work. If validators interfere with consensus, they will destroy the ecosystem and the price of their assets.
Therefore, the regulator acts more delicately, and soon all large projects will have white lists and KYC.
It will be a compromise for these people because they will not enter into conflict with the government or against legal legislation, but what is the wisdom in claiming that the investment is decentralized when you ask users for KYC, as long as the user submits his statement, CEXs are better than DEXs.
Even if Uniswap introduces a mandatory KYC procedure, then you will be able to manage your coins yourself and no one will be able to block them if you trade the Ethereum-DAI pair and other tokens where there are no blocking in smart contracts.
Another option is to hire a person who will go through the KYC procedure for money.

Do you know what question a Russian person will immediately ask?
I'm not allowed to hold cryptocurrencies, but my wife or my child is also not allowed to do so?
In Russia, deputies and officials are prohibited from doing business, but their children, wives and close relatives are statistically the most successful entrepreneurs:)
950  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Expect new IRS crypto surveillance to come with a surge in confiscation on: November 12, 2023, 10:56:54 AM

But this is not a very good example to be honest.
yeah it's not the ideal example the more ideal example would be they know your cryptocurrency addresses because you were sloppy and they traced them from coinbase and now they want you to hand over all your bitcoin. and if you don't then you're breaking the law even though a judge never signed off on anything. that's the type of thing that could happen. it's probably not going to happen to everyone though. but it will probably happen to someone eventually if they get this law on the books. expect it to be used as a tool for extracting more money out of people suspected of crimes but not yet convicted like they say they arrest you on suspicion of drugs then they decide "you know what, we should sieze all his crypto because he's probably guilty probably been laundering money."

Typically, government agencies take data from official sources, which can be crypto exchanges, registered crypto stores, and any service where you undergo verification.
If you do not link your coins to such services, then you have a greater chance of remaining undetected.
Nowadays there are still enough exchanges where you can trade via VPN without verification.

951  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can anybody help me debunk the Tether risk? on: November 11, 2023, 05:05:11 PM
Hey guys,

so I know the talks about tether and whether or not they are backed and how is almost as old as Bitcoin itself.
However, this is the only risk that I cannot fully grasp or understand. I see that they minted another billion USDT in the last week.

All the other arguments of anti Bitcoiner (energy, volatility, ...) I can counter.

Is Tether also the thing you are most unsure of?

Would like some input, THANKS Smiley
Tether stores its reserves in Treasuries. According to the latest report, this is more than $56 billion. This can be called an informal agreement and most of the money will work for the American economy.
https://tether.to/en/tether-q3-attestation-reveals-highest-percentage-of-cash-and-cash-equivalent-reserves-over-330m-reduction-in-secured-loans-and-maintains-726b-exposure-in-us-t-bills/
I cannot blame the company for this, because these are the rules in the market.
If there are problems with the US economy, then most of the assets will lose value and the USDT will lose its peg to the dollar.
952  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: EU Parliament Approves Data Act With Smart-Contract Kill Switch Provision on: November 11, 2023, 04:52:26 PM
And to beat a dead horse over and over and over again.

P.O.S. = piece of shit.

Mr. V still owes me two Eth coins from his reversal move done back in 2016 or 2017.

I would truly like to see a stake put into all poof of stake coins.

Sorry for the rant but I am liking the action taken by the E.U. as it shows the farce that P.O.S. truly is and will always be.

Just go buy a government bond and don't do P.O.S.

So there are no problems with the coin’s algorithm. If Ethereum worked on the old algorithm, then companies would have to migrate to new smart contracts if they contradict European legislation.

Some of these blockchains work on the principle of proof of stake, which means that there is a certain number of validators who can reverse the transaction and do whatever they want, and a judicial order can easily be directed to these validators.
This is very rough work. If validators interfere with consensus, they will destroy the ecosystem and the price of their assets.
Therefore, the regulator acts more delicately, and soon all large projects will have white lists and KYC.
953  Bitcoin / Legal / EU Parliament Approves Data Act With Smart-Contract Kill Switch Provision on: November 10, 2023, 10:47:04 AM
https://www.coindesk.com/policy/2023/11/09/eu-parliament-approves-data-act-with-smart-contract-kill-switch-provision/
"The final version of the bill's text, reviewed by CoinDesk in July, revealed that it contained a smart-contract kill switch clause.

Members of the European Parliament voted Thursday to approve a Data Act containing a controversial clause that could make most smart contracts unlawful.
The act, which establishes rules on the sharing of data, received 481 votes in favor and 31 votes against, according to a press release. The legislation now needs formal approval from the European Council, a body comprising the 27 member nations' heads of state."

__
Nowadays, most smart contracts have blocking and kill switch functions, and after official adoption, most projects will be no different from centralized exchanges. And we also know about KYC hook for Uniswap

I wonder if someone will took this job from crypto community then become a mole on what’s the SEC plan inside to early counter it by crypto project. This will be a very good plot twist for this job recruitment.  Grin
This is not serious. When you get a job, you will sign a lot of non-disclosure agreements and other rules, if you violate them, you will sit in prison for a very long time.
In Russia, newcomers work for 3-5 years in the police and prosecutor’s office, and then become successful lawyers Smiley

How does administrative forfeiture from a non-custodial wallet work?

probably if they suspect you of holding out on them then they can throw you in jail. just like they did with kevin trudeau.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Trudeau

In 2013, facing further prosecution for violations of the 2011 agreement and non-payment of the $37 million judgment, Trudeau filed for bankruptcy protection.[6] His claims of insolvency were challenged by FTC lawyers, who maintained that he was hiding money in shell companies, and cited examples of continued lavish spending, such as $359 for a haircut.[7]

In November 2013, Trudeau was convicted of criminal contempt,[8][9] and was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison in March 2014.

he said he didn't have the money, they said he did and he went to jail.

But this is not a very good example to be honest.
You give an example of one extreme, but even if you are in the USA and live as an honest citizen, then you can easily exchange bitcoins for cash from private money changers and spend this money wherever you want.
Although the laws in the USA are terrible, and if your partner is arrested and cooperates with the investigation, then you will have problems.

News update.

This mignt be another good news hehe. It appears the argument can go on the opposite direction. The politicans who do not want self custody and argue that it is for everyone's safety can be argued that self custody is really for everyone's safety heheehe.

US Senator Ted Budd (R-NC) has introduced a new bill to protect the right of citizens to self-custody Bitcoin and other crypto. Indeed, Budd first introduced the bill to 118 Congress this week in a larger push for digital assets and financial freedom among United States citizens.

Dubbed the “Keep Your Coins Act”, the bill “protects an individual’s right to conduct transactions with cryptocurrency assets without the need to utilize a third-party intermediary.” Moreover, Budd has stated that the act seeks to prevent third-party risks to consumers amid the FTX collapse.

Source https://watcher.guru/news/us-senator-introduces-bill-to-protect-bitcoin-self-custody#google_vignette
I saw this news but did not attach any importance to it, because in the USA there are a lot of bills that will never become laws.
Cryptocurrencies in the United States will be controlled like bank deposits, or even more strictly if the cryptocurrencies have an unclear origin story.
According to him, such a bill simply does not have a chance.

У знакомых там счета заблочили по причине русского паспорта, хотя живут там не первый год и доходы легальные, а не стартапы.

Если вы в Лондоне, скажите есть ли там шанс поменять в банке старые фунты на новые?

958  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Mixing USDT on: November 10, 2023, 08:11:16 AM
I couldn't really think of anything other than:

- swapping the USDT to ETH through Uniswap
- mix the ETH through Tornado Cash
- swap the ETH back to USDT

or if you just want privacy not from the authorities but just for retail tracking, then just use your preferred no-KYC centralized exchange.

USDT is a centralized token and mixing it is sometimes pointless, because criminal tokens can be blocked.
If you use Tornado Cash, then your address will be marked as an address that uses prohibited mixers and, accordingly, all addresses for receiving and withdrawing funds will also be marked.

____
Try eXch
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=577207.0

But I would recommend using DAI because these tokens cannot be locked by the smart contract author.

Another way. You change your USDT (ERC 20) to
USDT (polygon), but indicate a different receiving address.
Then change back and indicate the desired address. This is not mixing, and specialists can easily figure out where the tokens were sent

959  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: blockchain DeFi wallet on: November 09, 2023, 03:02:37 PM
thanks for the valuable information , this mean the seedphrase are weak and  more likely to fail with brute force? so actual  passphrase is recommended but really i do need it or it just optional military grade thing for wallet ?
i have second pin for blockchain wallet , any highly established online wallet that provide passphrase ?

i run my machine with linux distro . attacks are not common  .

That's actually not what I meant. The seed phrase will be impossible to brute force regardless of the wallet you're using.

The passphrase I was referring to, is a "custom word" (optional) you can add to your seed and memorize, that way, even if someone finds your seed written down, the hacker will just find an empty wallet since he doesn't have access to the custom words you've added.

Unstoppable wallet should support passphrases as mentioned here: https://unstoppablewallet.medium.com/whats-new-version-0-21-c247a09d8b05

thanks . this what i did read about passphrase since your previous post https://blackseedink.com/blogs/news/seed-phrase-and-passphrase-are-not-the-same

do you mean that?

i think Unstoppable wallet is recently developed ?   is there secure open source desktop wallet + widely used + highly established  . does not require to download entire blockchain and linux compatible ? simple interface and low fees
Previously, I recommended the Ledger wallet, but now I will advise you to buy the Trezor hardware wallet. The wallet is open source and you can use this wallet in conjunction with most DeFi wallets. And you won't have to worry about security, but don't forget that if you give permissions to smart contracts to spend your coins, then a hardware wallet will not save you.
960  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Events that lead to the adoption of a spot Bitcoin ETF on: November 09, 2023, 02:42:17 PM
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/bitcoin-trades-past-36-000-062931832.html
"A brief window of at least eight days opened on Thursday for the SEC to “theoretically issue approval orders,” according to a note by Bloomberg Intelligence analysts James Seyffart and Eric Balchunas. “Even if approvals don’t arrive this month, we still believe there’s a 90% chance of approval by Jan. 10,” they wrote.
The optimism of the potential approval by the regulator, after more than a decade of deliberation, has bolstered the token more than 120% this year and Caroline Mauron, co-founder of digital-asset derivatives liquidity provider Orbit Markets, sees a “sustained interest in bets on a further Bitcoin rally.” In comparison, global stocks have risen a modest 10% over the same period."

So far everything is going according to plan. I will sell Bitcoin on the news of a spot ETF Smiley
