1201  Other / Off-topic / Re: Which DSLR camera to pick? Nikon D3100 vs D5100? on: November 02, 2013, 11:42:55 PM
I think the answer is how much can you afford. If you can afford the D5100, of course you should get it.

When I pick stuff for myself I usually tend to go cheaper. Like 7950 over 7990. Or i5 over i7. You can get some extra important stuff for the difference in money for those components. But my knowledge in camera department is worse than PC stuff. (Kinda funny if you consider that my main job is photography). I can afford D5100, but I also can afford D3100 with some extra stuff attached to it.

Can't you take her out on the day with her and pick one out, then go for dinner or something imo.

When I'm out of time and desperate enough I ll probably do that Smiley But I'm afraid she might be opposed to the idea of a new camera, cause our D40 is still good. But it's lacking in some departments, and sometimes we need to film a video, and our smartphones do that poorly.

1202  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Way to heat my bedroom? on: November 02, 2013, 11:35:01 PM
Set fan speeds to low and install one big outtake fan instead. I find these almost enjoyable to have around. I'm so used to static noises when I go to sleep, I feel very uncomfortable in "total" silence. Because I'm starting to discern and pick out other random noises, like some distant barking outside, or a spider running on the wall, or rain, you name it.
1203  Other / Off-topic / Which DSLR camera to pick? Nikon D3100 vs D5100? on: November 02, 2013, 11:27:11 PM
Nikon D3100 body is 241EUR
Nikon D5100 body is 330 EUR

D5100 has better resolution, swivel LCD - which is good for making strange angle shots and video. It can film with a little bit higher fps. It has microphone jack. It supposedly has better HIGH ISO performance (although I rarely use ISO higher than 400). It has a newer sensor, but it's impossible to find side by side comparison photos on the net.
D3100 is almost 100EUR cheaper, which can buy me some extra lens or flash.

Anyone of you has D3100 and can swear by it? Or maybe 5100?

It's intended for my gf's birthday, and I don't want to spoil a surprise by asking her opinion. Canon and other brand's are out of the question, as we have some nikon lenses with our old d40 already.
1204  Other / Off-topic / Re: Which operating system(s) do you use? on: November 02, 2013, 11:15:19 PM
Windows kernel works on every machine, even older ones.

Linux distros hiccup on less known/old hardware.

In the recent year I had two cases where Linux falls flat on unknown hardware.
But it's free of course, for some it's hard to beat.
1205  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Best way to store and forget btc? on: November 01, 2013, 10:06:43 PM
you all forget that it also has to be safe from the user's forgetfulness

it has to have some backup options too

dog's collar? what the hell are you thinking? And if it runs off or something? Same goes to other examples.
1206  Economy / Digital goods / Re: [WTS] Hearthstone Beta Key [No Region Limit] 3 Keys 0.08 BTC on: November 01, 2013, 10:04:13 PM

1207  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What should be the Goal(s) of Government? on: October 31, 2013, 11:07:06 PM
There's no ideal solution. No utopia for you, sorry. Not in your lifetime, or in a lifetime of your kids. Only thing you can do is to steal/earn enough for yourself and those that are close to you, and live happily ever after in some remote corner, as far as you can be from any government. People are competitive by nature, they work in their own interests, and there are too many people with too many interests. It's logical that given the power you usurp that power. If someone is delusional enough to believe in some greater good, this is only a stage in his life, until a point where his delusions are replaced with common sense, coming in terms with his needs.

1209  Other / Off-topic / Re: What video games do you play? on: October 30, 2013, 07:52:29 PM
Started playing Mass Effect 2 yesterday. Pretty damn good game. Reminds me of Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Also tried the Betrayal Alpha version. Graphics are awesome. Not so sure about the game itself yet. Killing armored spaniards with a bow and arrow sucks once they start charging you, but nice to see a game that takes place in America. Looks like woods around here.

Mass Effect series is one of the best in vg history. One of the reasons is the amount of work (and $) that went into it.
1210  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Heating a house with old GPU's, worth it? on: October 30, 2013, 02:15:42 AM
In theory - every W you draw to power something, turns into heat energy, one way or another. Even light from lightbulbs.

I'm heating my apartment with my last gfx card, it pays for itself ++, but with the cost of litecoin going down it will eventually end.
If I had no other use for this card, except for mining - I would probably sell it, because it can devalue fast. But if the card is so old, that you can't sell it - I guess it's ok to use it a crypto-heater.

Also videocards were not designed to run 24/365
Even at modest settings something is bound to go off, be it a fan, or something worse. If you have no warranty then this is worst idea ever.

Finally - electricity is usually the most expensive source of heat.

Blasphemy!
1212  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Offline Laptops on: October 28, 2013, 10:59:38 AM
Give it a week and you'll be fine.
Just delete unused tiles from start menu to make it clean and organised.
I personally skip it on auto and use icons on a taskbar/desktop

If you want to go to desktop Win+D
If you want to shut down - Alt+F4 from desktop with nothing in focus

On my gf's laptop - I've set the power button to shutdown, and closing lid to sleep, which is best I think.

If you miss start button too much - there's a lightweight fanmade software for that, butI don't think that's so necessary.

Funny thing - in win8.1 they have added (kinda) the start button back

and the MOST IMPORTANT combo -  WIN+X    (includes everything you need in 8, and even more in 8.1)
1213  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: SOLVED: how to get BTC out of a Bitstamp account without verifying on: October 28, 2013, 10:53:27 AM
Next time you can register a company for £99 in the UK, verify with company documents, withdraw and then delete all

Or buy some bum a bottle of vodka for £10 and use his id.
1214  Economy / Digital goods / Re: [WTS] Hearthstone Beta Key [No Region Limit] on: October 28, 2013, 10:49:57 AM
Waiting for beta to end and spending that btc on packs will give you more juice, if paying for useless stuff is your thing.

Loving the distorted beginning. Video is subpar though.
1216  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Looks like the FBI got to DPR's stash on: October 26, 2013, 08:49:24 PM
http://www.forbes.com/sites/andygreenberg/2013/10/25/fbi-says-its-seized-20-million-in-bitcoins-from-ross-ulbricht-alleged-owner-of-silk-road/

Seems legit. I think most people had assumed that DRP's stash would remain under his control, looks like that isn't the case. What do we think, newbies?
Given the recent spike in value after shutting down SR, the US government will enjoy liquidating those seized BTCs for a nice chunk of change to buy more weapons, equipment, and maybe pay someone's bonus.

I don't like the idea of the authorities hogging something cool and finite as BTCs.
I personally don't think they cracked his account. I think he gave up his password or they found it copied somewhere.

1217  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Partnership between Facebook and police could make planning protests impossible on: October 26, 2013, 12:57:52 AM
I thought that twitter is the main tool of fast coordination?

I don't have a twiiter or facebook account myself, and I still cannot understand how people tolerate the way facebook changed things.
1218  Economy / Speculation / Re: Sudden new largest bitcoin address as of 10/25 on: October 26, 2013, 12:54:36 AM
How about releasing a new fork of bitcoin marking that address as invalid? Smiley Of course it should be implemented as silently as possible, so no word gets out to cops. It would be a fun "politicalmove" an "exertion of power"

Of course it breaks the whole system, but once, just for this case?  Wink
1219  Other / Politics & Society / Re: STOP living animals keychain/lucky charm in China on: October 26, 2013, 12:50:04 AM
I wonder how those things can survive for that long

But I do not see a problem here either. Why it's ok to kill other animals on industrial scale while it's bad to keep a small animal in a small container for a period of time?

I can only agree that it's a "bad taste" but not the end of the world.

If you would like to touch China on animal issues, you should target poachers and such, who hunt rare animals pieces for boogey-woogey-woo-do medicine magic. Those animals are at least endangered.
1220  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Offline Laptops on: October 26, 2013, 12:44:27 AM
Use windows 7. There is nothing in Windows 8 that is going to help you with Armory, and if something goes wrong you'll be wondering if it was a problem with Windows 8.

I like windows 7. Windows 8 looks like they are trying to herd you into the behaviors they want a consumer to have.  Cheesy

This computer is basic (1.8 GHZ) but it doesn't have all the garbage software either.  Oops! It has windows 8.

http://www.frys.com/product/7885449#detailed

don't be ridiculous, win8 is a big improvement

for example when swapping from intel to amd mobo, after 2 restarts it accepts new system. Win7 failed that test.
sure metro is unneded, but it's a matter of taste, and does not deserve all the bad mouthing it gets. Critique is from people who did not go further than a screenshot of metro in teh internetz.
ssd handling is improved, memory handling is improved and the goddamn thing  boots like a champ (which is a cheaply done hack, but still Smiley )

xp did it job, with little requirements, but it wasn't the most stable OS in the world, and when sp3 came out it was a pain
when i went to win7, I rarely got some lockups and was very impressed, although I went there very reluctantly and only after sp1
now on win8 I'm yet to experience one
