1721  Other / Meta / My thoughts on why threads that are spam-flooded should be deleted on sight on: November 10, 2018, 12:01:16 PM
If you visit bitcointalk's home page without any board filters, you will notice that many promotional threads, mostly from the altcoin boards, are filled with trash posting. One response after another, often hundreds per day. All done in an effort to keep threads in the front page. This has to end. Apparently altcoin promoters think it is a viable advertisment solution and this has created a black market and entire ring of spamming.

This market has to die. We need a strict approach on how SPAM initiators are treated here. Those that initiate the campaigns. Those that need then to promote their threads. Banning all the accounts that spam various threads might be a sisyphian task if we can't tackle the motivation behind it.

I think targeting the root of the problem would be to also punish those utilising this kind of spam for.their benefit. And since oftentimes altcoin promoters hire an experienced member of the forum just to post their thread, deleting the thread would be enough. Just in case somebody would say that the OP could be found guilty by association.
Deleting the thread because the spam is done in the first place for increasing visibility. If the thread is locked or deleted the ones who paid for the spamming get a lesson good enough, as it could damage the image of their project and have even the opposite effect. But the loose stance on this has created a black market for "pay me to spam your thread to the front page 24/7".

Mods, trust me, start deleting or locking threads where obvious spam is noted, and you'll see how campaign managers will start complying. Suddenly, as the word gets out, this market will die sooner than later.
1722  Other / Meta / Re: Report plagiarism (copy/pasting) here. Calling for Mod action: please permban on: November 10, 2018, 11:51:59 AM
I have another question:

If a thread is obviously filled with low effort responses, many of which are plagiarized, then I think it would be safe to assume that much of this spam is done for promotional purposes. Those are obviously against the rules, as incentivized posting in a specific thread is not allowed.

Are mods checking for when spam in a thread would become to much to lock it or delete it? Or would it help to also crowdsource that kind of reporting?

Right now I see most of the  accounts reported here banned, often in the same day... Which is good. But what about those that actually paid for the spamming? The OPs of the thread and the projects being promoted? Why should the rest of the thread remain up if it is generating so many pages of spam in a day.

A very promising crypto-project! I hope the developers and investors will have a successful run!

I found this thread in which the OP was pretty interesting, and I was going to give him some merit--then I checked and found that part of it was copy/pasted from https://u.today/10-bitcoin-friendly-countries-that-legalized-cryptocurrency.

OP wrote this as the only indication that anything he wrote was taken from another source:
According to an official press statement,

I reported the post as plagiarism.  Since this is similar to the situation with Rambotnic, who keeps pleading with me to remove my neg on him, I'd like to hear opinions on whether frozen2017's post in the linked thread above would be considered plagiarism.  It certainly isn't cited properly, and I'm convinced it should be enough to get him banned.
So long as the biggest part of what a user writes is original, I wouldn't consider including some text from another source a bad thing.
Judged by academic standards, it would be considered plagiarism and unethical if the source wasn't disclosed though. or even if the source wasn't cited correctly.

I think that the forum equivalent of critically unethical plagiarism would be disguising someone else's text as your own orignal forum post, where in fact most of the content is unoriginal. And this is the case here! If you look at frozen2017's post history, it's full of articles pasted often 1:1, with just slightly different formatting on occasion.

Since I didn't check last time and most were already banned... Quote of my last post only including users that appear to not be banned:

I'll be using bpip from now on.

Theymos,

would you consider supplying a list of user IDs of banned users so far? I know you had answered a related question in prior:
~~~
Quote
• A publicly displayed 'banned' rank under a person's username for permabanned accounts (people are wasting both theirs and staffs time reporting already banned users and bots).
~~~

No. Or not yet. Or the idea would need to be significantly modified.
1728  Other / Meta / Re: Report plagiarism (copy/pasting) here. Calling for Mod action: please permban on: November 09, 2018, 10:57:10 AM
Even though I see the posts of others after me led to bans, accounts I posted about don't appear in the modlog.
I'm wondering if I did something wrong or anything I could improve?

Did you report the plagiarized posts you found? Only to post it in here isn't sufficient, you have to report it, too.

Sometimes the mods are deleting the posts I've reported, but the account is still active.
Then I've to report another copy/paste post to get them actually banned.

Also, banned users don't have any indication in their profiles. Maybe those users I reported were already banned?
And since there isn't a full list of banned accounts, maybe the ones I reported were already banned?
~~~
Change the forum's software to include a public tag in every banned user's profile.
This suggestion was already answered by theymos here:
The only way to verify if an account was already banned is bpip.org, made by Vod, as Kemarit mentioned.
Thanks for this whole post. Very insightful.
Yes, I did report the posts and for the most part the posts were deleted.
1729  Other / Meta / Re: Report plagiarism (copy/pasting) here. Calling for Mod action: please permban on: November 09, 2018, 08:31:00 AM
I recently made a couple of posts here including a few accounts that had plagiarized posts.
Even though I see the posts of others after me led to bans, accounts I posted about don't appear in the modlog.
I'm wondering if I did something wrong or anything I could improve?
Also, banned users don't have any indication in their profiles. Maybe those users I reported were already banned?
And since there isn't a full list of banned accounts, maybe the ones I reported were already banned?
Is there any way to check if an account has been posted about here already at least? Displaying the thread in the print to search is already impossible as the thread has become too big to be within the limit for display.
I was thinking, if the profile link of the offending user could be included in posts here as plaintext, it would be searchable via google and within the forum's search. So this way it'd be easier to search here to avoid reporting banned accounts.
A better solution of course would be to either have a public list of all the banned accounts (theymos could help provide one manually for now at least)
AND/OR
Change the forum's software to include a public tag in every banned user's profile.
1731  Economy / Digital goods / Re: [Selling] Money Making method (Bitcoin) luckygames.io on: November 07, 2018, 05:55:40 AM
There's no reliable way or method to keep making money dicing or with any gambling activity in general. The house is set against gamblers so the games can keep on running without going in the red. With that said, I don't think there'd be much of interest in such 'method'.
1732  Other / Meta / Re: How to deal with bumping via fake conversation? on: November 07, 2018, 05:12:32 AM
I've voiced my thoughts in the past, but I don't mind doing it again. I'm really hoping theymos might consider some long-term solution to the issue. The workload put on mods is just over the top at the moment and reporting everything isn't easy and also doesn't solve the issue in the long run.
AN option to consider:
Disabling bump ability of new accounts.
Why should accounts lower than the member rank, that haven't earned any merits, be able to push a thread to the top? Especially in most of the Altcoin boards where such promotion with sock accounts is rampant, this is much needed. This would work without disturbing any legitimate user's ability to ask questions or post in the forum, but would instantly render useless the value of a response from new accounts bringing a thread to the front page. It's a small limitation that would likely discourage many of those altcoin marketers from engaging in the practice, without having to put all users in the same bag by enstating a much more strict newbie jail.
It's still early hours. Indeed a rise of democratic seats in the house is projected but I wouldn't see it being as big as some outlets have been claiming it could be. In a way, the polls proved to not be very reliable in predicting US election outcomes under the current political sentiment. So even if this is from the conservative Fox News, I wouldn't hold my breath over that projection.
Also, probably the projection OP talks about from Fox News:
1735  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: It is necessary to find one private key out of 10 million Bitcoin Addresses on: November 07, 2018, 12:07:03 AM
Most recently on the GitHub website I found a very useful program “BitCrack”
Source & Binaries available here:
https://github.com/brichard19/BitCrack
https://github.com/brichard19/BitCrack/releases
They say who has a powerful computer and who has video cards. This program processes more than 60,000,000 Bitcoin Addresses for PrivKey in 1 second.
Details:  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4453897.msg45671660#msg45671660
As for the video card, there must be a 64 bit operating system. For the work process used Toolkit CUDA 9.2
Dear friends! I want to offer you cooperation.
Who has a powerful computer and who has several video cards, find me one private key from 10,000,000 Bitcoin Addresses using the BitCrack program.
As I wrote in the beginning. I will thank you with good money. I have money. I am on the verge of a scientific discovery and I need your help.
I do not hide my identity, my name is Dmitry Bazhenovsky. I live in the Russian Federation in the beautiful city of St. Petersburg, where Grigori Perelman comes from is one of the famous mathematicians of our century. The man who proved the of Poincaré conjecture. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poincar%C3%A9_conjecture
My research is almost in the same direction.
Having learned one private key with the help of my algorithm, I can find out the private keys to 10,000,000 Bitcoin Addresses.
Each address out of 10,000,000 Bitcoin Addresses has a symmetry. I call these symmetries the Bitcoin Twin Addresses. Each twin has 10,000,000 similar Bitcoin Addresses. With the help of my research, I can reduce the generation of busting from a private key to a public key to the very minimum. (This means that the number of brute force 2 ^ 256 will be reduced to 2 ^ 16) As I already said, there are Bitcoin Twins Addresses. My theoretical algorithm can calculate this with the help of "Vector Mathematics".
For calculations, I use the program "MATLAB" https://mathworks.com
To start my mechanism, I need to know one private key from 10,000,000 Bitcoin Addresses. As I wrote at the beginning, all these Bitcoin Addresses have a zero balance. I chose them not by chance. All these addresses will be used in the algorithm as a starting point. In order to start the movement I need a starting point. The starting point is a private number. If you translate this number into Hex format via the “Decimal to Hex” script, you get a Private Key of 256bit. My goal and task is to find this number!
When everything is ready, I will post my development in the ArXiv service to the site: https://arxiv.org
People who will help me will not stand aside! I promise!!!
Write me my contact details:
EMAIL:  pokgoip@gmail.com
VK:       https://vk.com/mistercooper
FB:      https://www.facebook.com/dmitry.bazhenovsky
 I uploaded these 10,000,000 Bitcoin Addresses to the Google Drive cloud service.
So, you're looking for the help of others to find a couple of keys out of 10m supposedely randomly selected BTC addresses... And yet, you claim to have a solution to the issue yourself? How would the first help you in any way?
1736  Economy / Exchanges / Re: List of bitcoin debit cards on: November 06, 2018, 09:59:13 PM
I want to be able to withdraw cash from atms outside the US.
Or Wirex, they're coming to the US:
Wirex has extra fees (on top of ATM/bank fee) and low daily limits for ATM withdrawals and may not be too attractive for that purpose (Wirex is more fit for paying with the card in store).
Although if they get more (and more, and more) customers maybe they'll reduce those fees, but .. that's just a hope.
The other issue with Wirex is that they're using ridiculus spreads from live market rates. They claim to have no exchange fees, but there's a very big difference on how they convert BTC. Everyone using them should know that. I'm afrain many are unaware...
1737  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: NELUNS: "$136MILLION" OF NOTHING: yet another ICO scam... on: November 06, 2018, 08:09:26 PM
Please post about such threads in the meta board. There are specific threads under which users and their behaviors can be reported also.
Honestly, the forum should be doing better at addressing flooding and/or automated posting. Banning the account is only a temp solution, but if new accounts can bump threads all over again then the geniuses marketing those coins will just continue.
Mods need to ban their threads with firm warnings.
