1421  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NEM] NEM -New Economy Movement - No Envy Movement - Updates+Discussion thread on: March 02, 2014, 08:03:19 PM
I think POS better than POW.

PoW is bad for the environment and as soon as you launch even if its asic resistant the botnets move in and rape mine until the difficulty rises so mere mortals with home computers and laptops lose out.

If you want to do something good for the world - copy what ripple has done which I think it quite smart - put part of NEM 10,20,25% I don't know up for World Computer Grid stuff over a period of time e.g. 6-12 months.

People download the computer grid stuff, join team NEM and let the research projects around the world use their PCs for research computations that benefit us all. We read the team stats (which they can't fake) off the computing grid team stats page and award NEM every 24hrs as a result.

Its much more in line with the sense I have of the 'New Economic Movement'. My desktop at home is earning ripple when I'm not using it, has been since december, probably makes 60 xrp a day - I'm not covering the electric costs probably or making huge money and for the Ripple alone I wouldn't do it but I like the idea of helping the research projects too i.e. doing something good with the spare PC capacity.

You could market it as well ....

And because there isn't a 'pure' profit you don't get the botnets and the other professional miners moving in with their high end kit.

It has been discussed elsewhere but it is important t to mention here again. PoW has a big problem when mining power is concentrated.

We are not talking about bitcoin like mining that is used to secure network for ever. We are talking about 2 month mining period that  is used to distribute coins to mining community outside of stakeholders and people who read this forum. Mining period will end and Nem will be 100% POS like Nxt.

1422  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NEM] NEM -New Economy Movement - No Envy Movement - Updates+Discussion thread on: March 02, 2014, 08:00:31 PM
One think "eXocoin" (scam or not) is correct is that mining is essential for fair and wider distribution.

I know Nem like Nxt is designed to have have no miners, but short term one to four month mining (that has nothing to do with Nem protocol itself) could have been used for wider and more fair distribution.

Basically, lets say 50% are distributed to stakeholders and the rest are mined (like short 2 month mining period).

That would result in much wider and fairer distribution.

You should understand that "fairness" belonging to moralistic category and in all likelihood the statement "what is fair to one person" is entirely subjective and depends on how much can he gain from that particular "what" compared to other people. Wide distribution is easy to understand and can be objective but "fair distribution" is not.

If you don't like the word "fair" replace it with "success". Wider distribution means more successful coin.

50% coins for stakeholders and 50% earned by miners will result in much wider distribution
1423  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NEM] NEM -New Economy Movement - No Envy Movement - Updates+Discussion thread on: March 02, 2014, 07:58:24 PM
I think POS better than POW.

It's not about POS vs POW. Nem can still be 100% POW. The mining mechanism can  be used to distribute 50% of Nem. Mining mechanism can be anything and could have no relation to Nem internal POS protocol. The purpose would be to distribution Nem --  much wider distribution and attract new audience (the mining community).

Everyone will benefit for wider distribution. 100% of coins controlled by 3000 accounts (80% of the sockets) will do more damage than good.

Make it 50% to stakeholders
and distribute 50% by some kind of mining competition

I don't think so.
In my case ( just as an example) mining would be impossible. My notebook is as old as a granny and I like the idea of forging without having big high-end hardware.
Furthermore NEM is purely POS/POI not POW.  Wink

That's fine for you, as you already bought shares, but mining is essential for wider distribution.

I think it's time now to seriously consider 2 month mining period for 50% of coins distribution.  That will attract much different audience and result in much wider distribution.

1425  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][AUR][MANDATORY UPDATE] Auroracoin - a cryptocurrency for Iceland on: March 02, 2014, 07:33:28 PM
Why the fuck this coin is so popular? Can anybody tell me?!!!! The fuuck?! I cant understand! It is 50% premined, and every fuckin guy is angry when some coin is over 1%,.... Just tell me please.. Is this some kind of MAFIA work?  ZEDCOIN ZEDCOIN ZEDCOIN

It's popular because the developer "promises" the primine coins will be distributed fairly to the entire population of a country, and not used for selfish reason by himself.

There is a (small chance) the coin will become very popular in a country and might attract mainstream media attention.

  * Currently a static list of public nodes that allow API calls from anyone from the text file public_nodes.txt is used.
  * NRS and Java are now longer distributed with NRS Solaris.
  * You will get a warning in the secret input dialog if the secret is transmitted over http to the remote NRS node (only with start/stop forging).

"Forging" buttons should be disabled by default if the user is not connected to localhost (or 192.68.*.*)  IP

That will eliminate the risk of new users sending their passwords to public nodes

Any plans to reduce the fee?Currently it seems awful for everyone at first sight, that the minimum fee charged is 5$ cents!!

I know it was discussed not much ago,but we should be ready,in case the value of Nxt increased significantly in the next weeks,as there are real chances it could happen.Or people could lose 2$ just trying a demo transfer to a trial account to try Nxt.

Yes, this should be a priority. Nxt can't be used as encrypted messaging app (for example Android app) with that high fee.

Consensus was 0.1 but I think 0.01 is even better.
1430  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: March 01, 2014, 08:10:44 PM
Here is version 2.1 of my Windows NXT client "NXT Solaris".

Changelog
-Compatibilty fixes for NRS 0.8.x
-Implemented Curve25519 algorithm:
  * NXT Solaris is now a bit like "Electrum for NXT" (a thin client that does not download the complete blockchain, connecting to untrusted NRS nodes)
  * It is now safe to connect to public NRS nodes (except for forging).
  * As default, NXT Solaris no connects to a random public node.
  * If you want to forge, run your own NRS instance locally and set up NXT Solaris to connect to your instance.
-Since there is no batch mode in the NRS API:
  * Details for peers are no longer retrieved as default
  * A maximum of 50 (yet unkown) transactions per account are fetched from the NRS node whenever there is a new block
-Fixed null exchange rates when www.cryptocoincharts.info is down

NXT: 1758531264253431177

This is very nice and was really needed.  All clients should implement this.  Ordinary users with small amount of Nxt would not need  to install java or run NRS server. This can  mean that non-techie ordinary users can use it much easier but still stay safe.

Don't let the users create their own master passwords for new accounts and make sure you give them enough warning to backup  their "wallet" (i.e master password) or they will lose their accounts.

Also, the master password should NOT be saved to hard drive without encryption . The user would need an encryption password (local password, could be much smaller/weaker)

Hi Guys,

Just an update on the NXT market at MintPal. We really regret to say that we won't be able to add it. While our scripts were largely working, we simply didn't have the confidence or understanding required for it, in comparison to Bitcoin and other altcoins, especially when it comes to handling trading.

We will be refunding all voting payments in 48 hours automatically, though you can contact us if you require an alternative arrangement.

Full announcement here - https://support.mintpal.com/index.php?module=announce&sec=view&id=7

That is very disappointing (understatement). What did you not understand exactly? What were you not confident in?

Let them refund the money first and then talk about it later.

How nice.

That's what I am going to do with all pool spams

Cool story bro. Without those pools you wouldn't be mining. Believe it or not people actually come into these threads looking for pools Smiley

I don't mine nor am I interested in it.

I started with ghettopools because his fucking pool photo showed up several times in the thread.

I am assuming all these pools are constant spammers and just repeatedly post the same thing over and over again.

From now on I am putting any mention of pool on ignore

I was thinking of mining and buying this coin
BUT
As I live in Ottawa which has an Icelandic Embassy 1 block from my GF work I walked over and asked the nice lady if she knew anything about the give away.

She had me sit a minute made a call and a fellow came promptly out and told me clear they have NO knowing or contact from Dev's
AND it would not be usable as legal tender without gov approval and would need meet same regs as bitcoin exchanges do.
He was confused at first because Iceland gov WAS giving serious consideration to adopting the Canadian dollar and it was well publicized.
He thought I was asking about something related to THAT issue and laughed a firm NO to the  crypto being under consideration and  did not wish to hear details of the "AIRDROP".
There would be also at least some form of local news or info and contact group needed which should have a very transparent and open public presence.
He was un-aware of any such group  and yet Iceland has a mining community and bitcoin savy populace.
There are no Icelandic miners or natives in this forum involved or even announcing their eagerness or intent to receive coins or help or participate in any way
Oh and even public give aways from promo products usually must meet Postal regs and anti gambling/lotto laws..
So he was not sure if it would even be legal to give the promotional "Tokens" away.
See how easy that was to get some REAL info.

You are not bringing any new information. This is all known

http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-26083733

"Stories about Auroracoin in Iceland point out that Baldur Odinsson is a pseudonym and the company behind the project is based in Panama."

Look at the date on BBC article Feb 7

I'm considering locking this thread on page 2100.  What are everyones' thoughts?

I think this thread is historic and all, but I do think it's time we get A LOT more organized. Take 1 day off and you'll come back to 40+ pages of all kinds of topics. It's a mess.
It's very easy to miss out on "official decisions" and lose track of development of NXT in general.

I don't see why anyone would want to rather use this thread than a forum.

No one is forcing anyone to use  this thread.

Don't LOCK THIS THREAD

That will be dumbest thing. People will not magically move to other forums just because this thread is locked. They will just spend times in other coins threads

How many coins are really in circulation? It can't be really 10 million or prices would have crashed

Does this 10 million include the premined coined?

Looks like there are less than 100,000 coins in circulation or something?

95,000 right.

How many coins will there be be on on March 24, a day before giveaway (not including giveaway coins)

so im going to go ahead and put this out there so that as many people know about it as possible before round 2.

escrow for round 2 will work differently from round 1

Instead of using a spreadsheet to keep up with everything, im actually just going to use the built in functionality of the accounting ledger that is already provided for us by the bitcoin blockchain. There are many advantages. I will not have to do the same work twice for no reason. Also it elimiates the possibility for human error. what this will mean is that if you participate in round 2 you MUST BE ABLE TO SIGN a message with one of the addresses that you send from.

now don't freak out. Its very simple and for anyone who doesn't know how to do this I will personally walk you through every step and teach you how.

im going to be posting this several times to make sure that everyone sees it because the one big drawback to this is that if you send from an exchange or an address that you dont control than you will be donating your coins to me. granted this is a significant drawback but weighed against the advantages I think its worth it.

I suppose that means that is not possibile to send coins
from an exchange directly as it was in the 1st stage?
 Huh

that's correct

Can people send you btc from Coinbase .com? I think people are able to send btc with a message at Coinbase.com.

i really dont know if you can sign a message from a coinbase account.

does anyone know for sure one way or the other?

Yes, http://support.coinbase.com/customer/portal/articles/1392200-where-is-my-wallet-address-
