Just read the draft whitepaper you guys are working on.  Im pretty stoked that you guys included material from my article 'whats nxt in the world of cryptocurrencies?'

acc 12344:
http://87.230.14.1/nxt/nxt.cgi?action=3000&acc=12344

btw one czech guy registered some accounts and he is registering aliases there only with 2-3 Nxt from faucets.. it would be much faster if he created one acc and buy there 100 nxts Smiley
HOW to generate so shorter acc?

That account's keys were never generated.  That is hiberNXT since 12344 doesnt have a public key on the blockchain.

This is a great idea, but then again who would get the multisig... elections? some sort of foundation? the whole community?

What if one multisig died?

All:  I have created a discussion area specifically for dealing with this matterr of how to handle these unclaimed coins.  Please see the forum board at https://forums.nxtcrypto.org/viewforum.php?f=54

I expect we should have different threads in there, discussion of the board, multisig, operations, different ideas of what to do with the coins, etc

http://qz.com/165273/the-existential-threat-to-bitcoin-its-boosters-said-was-impossible-is-now-at-hand/

It is nice to know NXT does not have to worry about 51% attack like bitcoin. Even 90% attack can be thwarted.

James

bitcoin is vulnerable for a very unfair advantage even if a pool only owns 33% of the hashing power.  A research paper from Cornell University explains more and this following article gives a laymans view of the risk as described by the Cornell researchers: http://hackingdistributed.com/2013/11/04/bitcoin-is-broken/

I read this article about the 33% attack in November, and it is what prompted me to start searching for what I thought had the possibility to replace bitcoin, which is how I found NXT.

The NXT Foundation will at not cost to you manage your VPS; this offer comes with a custom SCREENNAME.vps.nxtcrypto.org domain name visible in peer lists!  All you hae to do is pay for the VPS and we will do the rest.

1) Sign up https://www.budgetvm.com/account/cart.php?gid=64  They accept PayPal.  Or use Digital Ocean.  Or use any other provider.  You need at least 1024MB of RAM on the VPS though.

2) The 1024MB VPS for $4.99/month should be sufficient unless you have a hallmark balance with more than 1,000,000 NXT, in that case please choose the 2048MB VPS for $9.99/month

3) When signing up for a VPS, when they ask for a hostname for your VPS, enter in: SCREENNAME.vps.nxtcrypto.org

4) When selecting an OS, please choose Debian6 x64

5) Send a Private Message in the NXT Foundation Forums to user forkedchain.  The Forums are at http://forums.nxtcrypto.org and in the PM please include the VPS's IP address, root password, and your generated hallmark for hostname SCREENNAME.vps.nxtcrypto.org.  You can generate your hallmark at https://localhost:7875/admin.html but please do this in private browsing mode so that your passphrase isnt cached to your disk

6) The NXT Foundation will 100% manage the VPS for you; you will still have shell access and I will give you a script on your server you can run ant any time to check your server at any time, like user abctc has on the VPS we are managing for that user account.

Number of lost Nxt:

if DGEX says he lost 800k Nxt and he owns 80 Mega, it means 1% of Nxt is probably lost: 10 Millions

some days ago i calculated the possible hiberNXT amount.
while it is difficult to calculate this (you have to set additional filters)
the rough amount was: 16 - 21m nxt.

no public key, only one transaction.
of course they could be very cold storages too.  Grin

ps: if you remove the one transation filter but keep the no public key, the amount was 160m
but it is unlikly that an account with more than 1 transaction is a lost transaction, even if this
account has no pk.

Im okay with using 160 million figure as the amount of hiberNXT it appears all along that the plan was for any account with no public key to be a bonus for the future additional source of 'mining' when in the future those accounts can be cracked. if those accounts are really cold storage you really need to secure them by making one transaction
768  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: January 11, 2014, 07:25:08 PM
So, you premined 100% and still don't do a giveaway?

So, you decided you would come in, spout your opinion and ask for a giveaway?

Not asking for a giveaway. Just questioning your marketing strategies
If you'd done some research, you'd know that there have been giveaways and there still are loads of bounties for people who contribute.

You'd also know that the word "mine" doesn't apply here.

I did know that. I did my research. Still don't think that's sufficient

my opinion Marketing was never part of the plan it looks to me like the features offered are all the marketing the original developers thought they needed
769  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: NXT coin - A total scam? on: January 11, 2014, 02:37:53 AM
hold Smiley

 this

remember a 100 percent distribution at Genesis is the only way to secure a 100 percent proof of stake coin

Hold and wait for the features
770  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: January 11, 2014, 12:51:14 AM
This might be a stupid question but...is there a way to tell how much NXT there is running among the online nodes and how much NXT in transaction fees is actually circulating? I am trying to figure out how much my NXT will forge for me and although I don't have millions of it I was looking forward to SOME kind of return. I have been funded for a little over an hour I would say and I know I need to wait longer but I would like to at least get an idea to I know what kind of return to expect.

Thanks to anyone who can help edumacate me!

The network is currently generating some 700ish blocks per day, out of 1440 which it would, if all accounts forged. So the forging amount should be somewhere in the range of 50%, i.e. 500M NXT.
Meaning, approx., with 1M you would generate every 500th block, so a little more than 1 per day on average.

[edit]
New accounts can start forging 1440 blocks after the first transaction to that account.
About a third of the blocks have fees, and the fees are usually single-digit.

can you expound on this?  are you saying that in order to hit an average of 1 block every minute for a 24 hour period, that 100% of all NXT must be unlocked and forging?  that doesnt make sense to me.  so why is it sometimes we see multiple blocks being forged in under a minute?
771  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Nxt source code flaw reports on: January 11, 2014, 12:41:29 AM
I just posted a proposal to fix the account number typo-problem over at the official forums:
https://forums.nxtcrypto.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=524 <- making NXT account numbers awesome!

What do you think about that?

thanks for posting that there.  I went to the alt-client forum there and asked all the devs there who have done their own client to implement this.

lol think of the possibilities of vanity accounts with alphanumeric!  actually, probably not many.  the forward error correction would most likely prohibit most words from being used
772  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: January 10, 2014, 10:31:15 PM
0.5.3 is running great for me as well. With prior versions I had to restart my server a few times per day, so far it's been running a little over 24 hrs without a hitch.

0.5.3 didnt work well for me at all but 0.5.4e seems really good
773  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: January 10, 2014, 04:30:53 PM
Hey guys,

I'm currently generating me a 777****777 address. Is my calculation correct that it takes about 900,000 generated addresses to obtain one in my wanted format with 6 wanted digits characters (the 1st digit can't be a zero).

The script is running on my PC and on my university cluster which isn't much faster. It's unfortunately running with the NXT API and in python. So it's not the fastest. I would like to make a native C version.

For this I would have to work me into the algorithms. Is this something the community wants?
You can start from my vanity generator: https://bitbucket.org/JeanLucPicard/vanity/src and add a Filter class that matches addresses in the format you want, should be just a few lines of code. Slower than C, but it can go through 8000 accounts per second on my laptop, and I just generated two accounts that start with 777777 in 400 seconds.

hey JLP,  is your vanity generator able to generate accounts that begin with zeros?
774  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: January 10, 2014, 03:27:54 PM
hey cfb i had this idea. i wont claim that its a good idea. but i think its atleast interesting enough to be worth sharing.

What if, rather than being associated with a single public key, entries in the accounting ledger were associated with 2 public keys. One could be used to sign transactions and one could be used to sign blocks. This division would add a lot of protection from theft for node operators. That way only the block signing key would need to be left unlocked meaning that leaving your account unlocked would entail no extra risk of theft. It would help us move towards a point where there is no cost associated with forging so node operators would be more intentioned to forge all of the time even if their chances of forging a block were slim. As it stands right now, someone who is not likely to forge more than one block per year may decide its not worth the risk to leave his client unlocked, where as if this idea were implemented than there would be no risk of theft and so he would have no reason not to leave it unlocked.

perhaps you could also pass it on to jean luc and bcnext just for the sake of giving them something interesting to think about that may lead to similar but better ideas.

This is an interesting idea, let's discuss it and implement if it's really good, the whole community should take part in the discussion. No need to ask BCNext, Jean-Luc or me.

hes only like the 3rd person to suggest this!  good we really need to get this implemented

I post a few days ago in nexcoin.org that aws.amazon.com cloud gives 1 year free micro t1 VPS
I have a windows one free and now I added onepaid both with slightly more than 600mb ram. It seems that the nxt nodes run ok on them. I don't have them hallmarked but I thought we run as many like them as we could to support the stability.

It costs 0 for 1 year.
Go make accounts in aws.amazon.com and set up a VPS with nxt node.
You need to modify the web.xml
         <param-name>myAddress</param-name>
         <param-value>PUT THE VPS IP HERE</param-value>

Don't put money to fogrge just run nxt client.

Just running nxt node (client) with 0 nxt in it will help the stability right?? or am I confused again!!!!

Would be great if you could write up a guide on getting people up and running on AWS. Windows and Linux.
Bai,

I signed up and I'm at my console home page. How do I set up a VPS? Do I launch an EC2 instance? Which flavor (linux, windows) of Amazon Machine Image should I choose?

Also, has anyone confirmed that this will help nxt network stability?

Why am I doing this when I can't even get my client to run properly? Tongue

I will do Windows set instructions later on tonight. I am with a customer at the moment and cannt do any work on NXT!!

Would be nice if some of the leaders/genii can confirm that this will help the stability of the newtork else its waste of time.

Step by step with images how to install a VPS in amazon:

AWS (aws.amazon.com) consol set up of a windows server to allow NXT running on it. Should be free for 1 year if you run 1 instance only and its t1 micro (at least it is free for me).
Step are the links (images/screenshots) below in chronological order:
They are really every click so its not as bad as it looks!! less than 20 clicks (simpleS)

After you create and connect to the VPS using the remote desktop shortcut you need to set up Firewall Rule on the Server to allow everything for NXT.
Here are the steps:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ofkaxb7nlxodmre/AWS_VPS7.jpg
https://www.dropbox.com/s/0jmc9l305tragar/AWS_VPS8.jpg

DO NOT USE THIS VPS FOR REAL MONEY ACCOUNTS!!
Use them only to put more nodes on the network.

After you set up NXT you need to go in the web.xml file in ....webapps\root\WEB-INF
Open the web.xml and edit the section
         <param-name>myAddress</param-name>
         <param-value>PUT THE VPS IP HERE</param-value>
You can see the IP address in the Remote Desktop Connection Title.

The example VPS that I created is deleted now so there is no point trying to connect to it Smiley

Sorry for the big qoute above but it is free for a year. Have set one up today oh boy having a headache now, but its running alright.

so people set one up its free for one year.

Pin

EVERYONE.  Please sign up for this, even if you cannot manage it yourself. I CAN DO IT FOR YOU!!! FOR FREE!!  as long as you sign up for the service (be sure to select the t1 micro tier) under your amazon account you can  PM me the IP address and SSH key they give you and I will do it all.

No I dont need nor do I want your amazon credentials.  Just the IP and SSH key.

Be sure to tell it to use a debianOS so use this link: https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp/B00AA27RK4  be sure to select x64 OS.
WHATEVER YOU DO DONT PICK THE WINDOWS OS.  i cannot manage those efficiently like i can these debian ones

As a bonus I will run these nodes under the vps.nxtcrypto.org domain so you will be able to see YOURSCREENNAME.vps.nxtcrypto.org out there in peer lists!

If there are some accounts with substancial amounts of NXT which are nobody's property and have weaker passwords than maybe we could create special thread to organise group cracking.

I'm sure a lot of people would like to use script/program to make such group brute force treasure hunting Smiley
It could be constructed in similar way as altcoins pool mining with system of distribution f.e. lucky one would get half of found NXTs and the rest of could get proportional part of other half. Also it could be a simple solo treasure hunting.

This would be great for increasing NXT community and would be simply fun. In future because of growing amounts of NXT's lost in void it would become even more successful. What do you think about it?

I would love to have a group like this exist. It would really show how difficult (or easy Smiley) it is to crack a NXT account.

I would gladly raise a funding for a project like this even just for research purpose.

I would consider that to be morally wrong, at least trying to crack private keys for weak passphrases.  However, the hiberNXT on the other hard where there are no published public keys are another story.

You made a good point. Someone's acount can also have weak password.
But isn't there any difference between passwords locking common users accounts and these unused with NXTs sent there by mistake? Isn't it different format of password like random string + ending with string of zeros?
If there is a difference we can simply create a standard for treasure hunting of only these lost NXTs.

As CfB said, its to allow future recovery of "lost" NXT in the future. "Lost" as in someone mistakenly sent NXT to the wrong address that doesnt yet exist.

So basically, CfB and BCNext are here to tell you that that was the plan all along, and that EVERYONE is advised to secure all accounts by paying for at least 1 transaction/alias.
