3181  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Miners: Time to deprioritise/filter address reuse! on: November 19, 2013, 06:12:14 PM
Miners have ALWAYS had the freedom to pick which txs they want to include in blocks.  If you feel miners shouldn't have that freedom then you probably should have done more research before getting involved in Bitcoin.

Well the solution to this problem for now is clearly for the 50% of us who aren't blinded by ideology to keep our hashing power as far away from Eligius as possible.

What does 50% have to do with anything?   This isn't a hard fork or change in core protocol, it doesn't need your or anyone's approval.  Each INDIVIDUAL miner (or indirectly through the pool they choose) have the freedom to prioritize tx as they see fit.  They always have and they always will.  That isn't going to change with or without 50% support.

However I agree as a miner you should select a pool who's views are aligned with your own.  Either you construct your own header and are in direct control of transaction selection, or you "vote" with your hashing power however this patch can be used by anyone at anytime and requires no consensus.

3182  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Transactions coming from Blockchain.info taking forever to confirm lately? on: November 19, 2013, 06:10:23 PM
All blockchain.info apps and the web wallet will not include a transaction fee automatically if the priority of the transaction is less than 57 million (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Transaction_fees).

Typo?  I think you mean >57 million.

Quote
This has worked fine in the past however the recent transaction spike (https://blockchain.info/charts/n-transactions) means there is no block space left for free transactions, causing them to be significantly delayed.

Agreed that is a large part of the problem.

Quote
An update to the web interface will be deployed shortly so a fee will always be include if there is more than 1000 unconfirmed transactions in blockchain.info's memory pool. Therefore at none "peak times", such as weekends, there is possibility that some transactions can still be made for free.

That sounds like a partial solution however why not also have a check box that says "include 0.1 mBTC fee per KB for faster processing"?
This provides a black and white simple to understand choice for users.
3183  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Miners: Time to deprioritise/filter address reuse! on: November 19, 2013, 06:02:23 PM
Miners have ALWAYS had the freedom to pick which txs they want to include in blocks.  If you feel miners shouldn't have that freedom then you probably should have done more research before getting involved in Bitcoin.

Tx selection will only grow more complex in the future.  Some miners may simply sign deals with large merchants to provide a quality of service for their tx.  VIP clients will have all tx to their addresses jump to the front of the line.    I think that type of arrangement is only a matter of time.

Miners have the freedom to choose tx selection.   Miners aren't obligated to give your tx priority.  That has been the "rules of the game" since the genesis block.  If you have done so little research that this didn't occur to you, well I would recommend some critical thinking.
3184  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: RawDawg is back with a NEW Bitcoin video - Bitcoins are for morons! on: November 19, 2013, 05:54:06 PM
It is sad.   RawDawg has always been a moron but at least in the past he was a funny moron.  I mean he spouted nonsense and looked like an idiot by getting basic facts wrong but he was animated and loud and funny. Now he just comes across as boring, slow and angry.  I didn't even watch more than half (maybe it gets better) simply because it was dull, plodding, and circular.

I have a feeling on what sparked the change.  He was so sure Bitcoin was doomed and short lived fad where only the most idiotic of people would lose money and the reality is since his last video Bitcoin even with bubbles and crashes has vastly outperformed all precious metals, stocks indexes, currencies, and commodities.  There is no asset class which has performed better.   Unlike most people he can't say he didn't know about Bitcoin.  He certainly didn't understand it but he was interested enough to make 3 or 4 videos.  He could have bought some as a speculative investment but he didn't.  He was SOOOO SUUUUREE that Bitcoin would crash and burn and was just waiting to post that final last laugh video.

Fast forward 14 months and if he bought $10,000 then and sold today he wold have $1,000,000.  Hell even if his long term goal was to acquire silver if he had sold 500 oz of silver to buy Bitcoins back then and sold the Bitcoins to buy silver today he would have 50,000 oz of silver.    The day Amazon starts accepting Bitcoins, someone should put RawDawg on suicide watch because I am pretty sure Amazon won't be accepting silver.

Nothing wrong with Silver or Gold (I own both as a hedge against inflation) but they will never be currencies again.
3185  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Miners: Time to deprioritise/filter address reuse! on: November 19, 2013, 05:46:04 PM
It stinks of social engineering. If not reusing addresses is the only way bitcoin will survive there will be no need to pressure people into doing that.

That is short sighted thinking:

3186  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Miners: Time to deprioritise/filter address reuse! on: November 19, 2013, 05:40:25 PM
Why are you so afraid of freedom?
Why are you (those proposing this) so afraid of my freedom to reuse an address?
They aren't. You are free to continue to reuse addresses.   Freedom of choice means a CHOICE.   It doesn't mean other people have to support your choice if they disagree with it.   Nobody is forcing you to change how you operate.  Miners have always had the right to prioritize tx.  After every block SOME tx are not included.  The patch simply changes which tx have priority, nothing more.

The clear purpose of this is to dissuade people from reusing addresses, you wouldn't disagree with that?
While I still have the option, you are making it a poorer option than it was before, for political reasons.

That is called freedom.  Freedom doesn't mean people always doing what you WANT them to do, thats easy. In fact it often means people doing something you disagree with, freedom of speech means someone having the freedom to say things you might find hurtful or offensive.

Yes freedom can be scary.  Freedom can mean you are inconvenienced.  Freedom can make you question if your choice is worth it.

So once again why are you so afraid of freedom?

Also "I" am not doing anything. At the time of the writing I am not mining (although may in the future) and I didn't right the patch.  I just happen to agree with it.
3187  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Transactions coming from Blockchain.info taking forever to confirm lately? on: November 19, 2013, 05:35:33 PM
Correction there is no cost to the miner.

Miners ALREADY prioritize txs for selection into the next block.  The patch simply changes the rules on how they will be prioritized.

Won't it delay some TX that would have payed a fee?

Possibly but many miners are curently capping block size anyways as current fees don't justify the increased risk of orphans on larger block.  So right now there are paying tx NOT being included in the next block.  In many cases picking paying tx A over paying tx B isn't going to cause a net change in revenue.

That may change in the future, it remains to be seen.

Why should I as a miner do this? This costs extra computing time = less blocks = less profit.

It is a way to encourage better practice in the whole network, at a small loss for the miner.

Correction there is no cost to the miner.

Miners ALREADY prioritize txs for selection into the next block.  The patch simply changes the rules on how they will be prioritized.
3190  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Transactions coming from Blockchain.info taking forever to confirm lately? on: November 19, 2013, 05:27:44 PM
Blocks only allow 27KB (~60 avg sized txs) of free txs.   I would strongly recommend paying the min fee (0.1mBTC) even on tx which can be "free" (high priority).

Thanks D&T for those precise numbers.  The problem for a lot of us is that we use the Blockchain.info app for iOS (does Android have the same problem?) and we can't force the app to include a 0.0001 BTC fee.

I think piuk would have to address this problem.

Well if you have a broken wallet your only options are
a) stop using it
b) advocate the author fix it (although since piuk STILL uses GPU numbers for one of his miner profit charts I wouldn't hold your breath)
c) do both
3191  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Transactions coming from Blockchain.info taking forever to confirm lately? on: November 19, 2013, 05:16:05 PM
The default block rules only allow 27KB (~60 avg sized txs) of free txs.   I would strongly recommend paying the min fee (0.1mBTC) even on tx which can be "free" (high priority) or accept that it can be hours or days before your free tx is confirmed a charity.

Pools prioritize tx by fee per KB and 99.9% of tx paying a fee pay the min (0.1 mBTC) so you may want to consider making your default fee slightly higher (like 0.1001 mBTC). Smiley  My tx are almost (~95% of time) included in the next block.

3192  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why bitcoin will hit 100000$/BTC in 2014. My conspiracy theory on: November 19, 2013, 04:55:32 PM
maybe China will use their trillions of USD toilet paper reserves to buy bitcoins Smiley

Over the next 30 years or so.  Most of China's USD holdings are in US treasury bonds not "cash".
3193  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Miners: Time to deprioritise/filter address reuse! on: November 19, 2013, 04:53:47 PM
There is no "personal gain".  A tx with 10 inputs from the same address is no larger or smaller than a tx with 10 inputs from 10 unique addresses.  So please (I honestly mean it) spend some time learning about how Bitcoin works before you start throwing around FUD.

Miners have ALWAYS had the power to prioritize tx as they see fit.  Always, back to the genesis block.  If you are realizing this for the first time well that is kinda sad.  If Luke never published the patch his pool would still be able to internally prioritize tx as they see fit.  Why are you so afraid of freedom?

I'm too lazy to scan it, what does it say?

It says stop being a lazy ass and scan me, or learn how to read QR code.
3195  Economy / Economics / Re: The end is near! My mum is thinking of buying Bitcoins. on: November 19, 2013, 04:41:54 PM
The end is finally near guys, this morning I got a lift from my mum. She knows I've got some bitcoins and laughed at it as a silly investment. But this morning she was asking me more about it and said she is thinking of cashing in some investments that are doing nothing to buy some bitcoins.

She said she was reassured after reading about what occurred with the US senate yesterday and the amount of coverage in the news including the BBC.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-24986264

Good times ahead I think Smiley

Well historically in other markets when the uninformed investor jumps in with both feet the market peaks and they suffer.  It is generally seen as a sign of the end of a bull run.  Gold, dotcom, bonds.  The clueless investor first laughs it off, they starts to wonder if the should be invested, then works up the courage and by the time they commit they are at the tail end of the bubble.

If you like your Mom and she is absolutely convinced she needs to do this I would tell her to decide on how much she wants to invest, then divide that by five and buy 1/5th each month for the next five months.
3196  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Still waiting on unconfirmed transaction - Blockchain very slow? on: November 19, 2013, 11:02:47 AM
I am pretty sure you didn't get 20 confirmations in 40 minutes. Just going to go out on a limb on that one.
3197  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 19, 2013, 10:58:15 AM
Bitcoin is not accepted for domains.   I am sure it is something legal.   They do still accept it for certain upgrades.

Domains require a valid billing contact on file and verification (credit card or other payment that confirms ownership of payment method)

Hmm... don't think that is correct.  namecheap allowing registering domains with BTC payment.
3198  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How original Bitcoin client fee scales? on: November 19, 2013, 09:43:09 AM

Interesting.  It is a concern in the short term but longer term it should be solvable.

1) The current block broadcast system is relatively inefficient.  Miners broadcast all transactions although it is highly likely peers already have the tx. Instead block could consist of just header and tx hashes.  If one wanted to reduce latency further it would be possible to use a smaller hash in block broadcast. Since collision would only occur against tx in memory pool a 128 bit or even 64 bit hash would be sufficient.

2) The block subsidy will drop to 12.5 BTC in <3 years.  The orphan rate vs tx fee is altered by the large block subsidy.  As the block subsidy is reduced it becomes less of an issue.

Still thanks for the link it appears the orphan rate is higher than expected and that is going to constrain fees in the short term.
3199  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bad news for BTC-devs!? on: November 19, 2013, 09:06:14 AM
I have always thought using webcam and qr codes an ultra-paranoid way of airgapping.

QR codes have a pretty limited capacity but I have been experimenting with animated QR codes (like a flipbook of codes) for passing larger amounts of data.

You mean for offline transactions (e.g. Armory)? While it would be a nice feature, it feels more like security by obscurity. Nothing prevents an adversary to manipulate the sent QR codes, if the online computer is compromised.

The offline computer wouldn't trust the online computer.   The online computer is simply used for blockchain data and to broadcast the offline signed transaction.
