7321  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BOUNTY 1 BTC so far] BitLive CD on: June 25, 2011, 04:03:14 PM

I would pledge up to 5 BTC for successful project.

but ...

Needs to have a terminal available/prominent.
Needs to be compatible with IronKey USB secured sticks.

... also not too sure about locking into a query/response dialog. Maybe a selectable "advanced/expert" mode that drops into terminal or some such?
7322  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BitVault LiveCD - Bitcoin Secure Transactions Environment on: June 25, 2011, 03:53:36 PM

Liking these "Vault Environment" projects ... just watching.

So how sure are you that traces of the decrypted private keys are never left anywhere on the machine when you are all done? RAM, cache, buffers, etc? Isn't that somewhat hardware dependent? Be good if an embedded guy could have a look through it also.
7323  Economy / Economics / Re: Namecoin prices plummeting - opinions? on: June 24, 2011, 09:45:44 PM

My opinion?

buy with both fists NMC will never be cheaper (well maybe a little) .... they began at around 0.001 btc or less so are up 3000% ... a correction was warranted to gather the thoughts.

They have all the potential of BTC, 'people don't understand them', so what? ... which average joe actually understands money? how else has fed. res. been able to screw yous over for soooo long?

People who matter understand them. Buy and hold is my free advice. DYODD.
7324  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [announce] Namecoin - a distributed naming system based on Bitcoin on: June 24, 2011, 08:36:04 PM
While were in development stage lets solve some more problems, like the removal of ssl certificate authority! How about when you register a domain you get a private and a public key for it, then when you go to a website you browser asks namecoin for the public key for that domain, and then a secure connection is established. This system can be implemented into the existing ssl standard. What do you guys think?

Very interesting idea ... I'm listening. Sounds almost too simple (i.e.too good to be true) could be brilliant. Flesh it out some more.

Would greatly increase potential benefits of namecoins if we could do away with those lecherous certificate "authorities
7325  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Letter to the EFF on: June 24, 2011, 06:33:09 PM
The EFF is a defender of your digital rights.

They are preserving their ability to remain neutral, thus the ability to provide a unbiased defense if and when bitcoin litigation hits the courts.

The last thing they need is to be disqualified because of a conflict of interest in an important bitcoin case.

They are already conflicted because they are accepting dirty, bloodied Federal Reserve Dollars.

Although it is good to know what side of the fence they are sitting on, for now.
7326  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: NodeBank - Concept for a p2p banking network on: June 24, 2011, 11:29:09 AM

Meni:

your ideas have merit ... Ripple, Loom, Open Transactions are also pieces with similar lines and shapes ... it is like a jigsaw.
7327  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: My new projet: an almost anonymous exchange market place on: June 24, 2011, 11:13:53 AM

This project is turning me crazy.

First I realised there is no reason to limit the currencies to bitcoin and
euros.  Then I realized there is no reason to limit it to currencies.  So I
changed it and started to developp a project that kind of looks like the loom
project.

But then I had an even crazier idea:  what about decentralizing adjudication?
The idea would be to use bitcoin-like concepts to distribute the adjudication
process amongst the clients.  Each of them would compute a proof-of-work on the
book of the orders they know about.  The winner publishes its results and gets
rewarded by the arbitrage opportunities he could exploit in his order book.

7329  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I just got hacked - any help is welcome! (25,000 BTC stolen) on: June 24, 2011, 10:40:17 AM

So what's the tax implications of mining 25,000 btc that go missing through nefarious means ... or otherwise i suppose, e.g. into the btc black hole?

Hmm, good question. I wish I could answer it. This is a legal grey area here. Should we treat BTC as a stock or some other asset that gets taxed only when converted into USD. Or is me mining 25K back then an income stream even though I never converted it into so called "real money" (ie money recognized by the government or belonging to the government).

The way I intended to treat it (had I still controlled that 25K BTC) is as a capital gain. If I sold some of those bitcoins I would've reported my profits as income. Granted where I live I would've been taxed like hell.

Any tax experts here? How should I treat this 25K BTC loss; tax write-off? Doubt that would fly with the tax man.

What is your insurance situation? If your $500,000 gold/cash stash went missing ... you might be covered by householder's insurance!

... just saying, it ain't real until you make it so ... an then do you want an insurance lawyer crawling back up your blockchain making sure you haven't just sent them to yourself to avoid prying eyes, taxes or some such ...
7330  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should we learn hacking too? on: June 24, 2011, 10:04:37 AM

yes, we need a btc foreign legion security hax force ... vigilantes welcomed.

forewarned is fore-armed ... "they" be coming first for the bitcoins

7332  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: New, simple online wallet: www.instawallet.org - no signup required on: June 24, 2011, 06:56:08 AM
PSA guys, technically this isn't any more secure than encrypting your own wallet. If a hacker/malware were on your system and found the "secret" link in your browser bookmarks or saved somewhere on your system, the hacker could just use that URL to transfer the funds to their own wallet.

Yeah, it's one more thing for the writers of malware to have to search for the secret link, but it's not out of question. Look at all the hacks and stuff that have come up. WHere there are security holes these hackers will find a way to get in and steal stuff. It didn't take them long at all to make the malware to steal wallet.dat. The level of effort it would take to adapt that malware to also search for this secret URL is trivial.

Or am I missing something?

You could encrypt the bookmark link to your instawallet ... or continually create new ones and move the money around ... get creative.

And I don't think anyone ever said it was for large holdings just your spending money when you are out and about on the net .... so you don't have to fire up the big kahuna with your savings wallet in it just to buy some socks and blow ....
7333  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: GBSE back up after security audit on: June 23, 2011, 08:29:24 PM

took a look around GLBSE ... interesting project you are developing there... when will GLBSE be listed on the GLBSE, I could buy some shares of that? Smiley
7334  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MtGox claim site is up! Everyone who claimed say haaaay ... on: June 23, 2011, 07:47:01 PM

Wtf is up with these impossibly long passwords, it wasn't the users that got hacked it was MtGov's woeful internal security practices and now they penalise the users ...?

They may as well just go to keys of some sort, have they even got an inkling ... hint 16 inklings in a clue ... maybe they don't like being in business?
7335  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: About Mt. Gox flaw from a security expert on: June 23, 2011, 06:57:45 PM
Hey guys -- just checking in. Has the undisputed winner of this thread been declared yet?

No, i think someone walked off with the dick measuring ruler and now its just a bunch of guys standing around with their dicks hanging out ....
7336  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: To Magical Tux on: June 23, 2011, 11:14:30 AM
JPMorgue Chase and Goldman Sachs would like politely disagree with you here
They don't act like they are immune. They act like they have the money to settle any cases. And they do.

what they have .... some might call it "money" ... others might disagree ... they are insolvent on many levels.
7337  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: About Mt. Gox flaw from a security expert on: June 23, 2011, 11:06:49 AM
Quote
1) Most of the people here want Bitcoin to have a broader adoption.

2) If Bitcoin scams starts to spread out, then both its adoption by people and businesses will slow down

3) Recently a huge sum of money, whose amount can be only speculated about, but which is very consistent, has been stolen by Mt. Gox

4) Mt. Gox and other exchanges share a VERY WEAK authorization model

5) Most people use the same weak password multiple times

1) not necessarily, bitcoin could do just fine as a niche currency for people who actually know how their computers work ... (handing matches to children can be dangerous)

2) monetary scams are all over the globe, crime is rampant on Wall St., is it affecting "dollar adoption"?

3) 3 months ago 400k btc wasn't worth squat and nobody would have cared ... in bigger scheme it is still peanuts .... GS got clean away with more than $100 bill and all they got was some schmuck dancing in front of the senators for few hours

4) MtGov is not equal to bitcoin, they are a curious sideshow

5) Most people are idiots and probably are not qualified to handle bitcoin technology at this stage in their evolution .... it is like when TCP-IP was released ... do you think it would have been a good thing if every tom dick and harry was trying to hook-up their own routing ....??

All in all it makes for some great laughs but you maybe taking it a little too seriously ... people quickly become irrational when money is involved ... you won't taking your bitcoins with you when you pass on ...
7338  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: All this rage and BTC valuation is almost back where it was before the event. on: June 23, 2011, 10:35:33 AM

7339  Bitcoin / Press / Re: Bitcoin press hits, notable sources on: June 23, 2011, 10:21:20 AM

Reporters all just hoping to buy bitcoins on the cheap after their trash stories, been sitting on sidelines since April watching it skyrocket .... once they've bought in they'll be hyping it up like little squealing fat pigs ....
7340  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: About Mt. Gox flaw from a security expert on: June 23, 2011, 09:48:12 AM

So have you built bitcoind on BSD yet ... be interested to know your thoughts on the statistical probability of it getting hacked ...

send through the makefile when you have done it so we know you are not just bullshitting everyone.

1) People need to read more carefully my posts and hate less

2) I never said you need BSD for bitcoind. You need BSD to expose your services.

3) I never said I have any software ready yet.

4) I am here just to point two facts:

a) Recently someone entered MtGox, and MtGox thinks he is not responsabile for password leakage

b) MtGox use very weak measures to prevent password leakage

I'm not trying to hate but you're making it pretty easy .... before claiming expertise maybe you should try building bitcoind on a system, any system will do, run some tests, get some data .....
i mean really how are we meant to take your expert opinion on anything bitcoin related if you don't know jack about bitcoind??

that would be just wrong. Roll your sleeves up, do a little learning and doing and then come and spout off as much as you please ...
