14201  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor or Paper Wallet? on: September 01, 2017, 06:26:23 PM
Thanks, that really makes sense. I am avoiding Bitcoin core as I have issues with over 145 GB bandwidth and I am not sure if electrum is going to take that much of space or not. I was planning to use Trezor with the chrome extension and above-mentioned plan sounds perfect as 5% holding on the web wallets is not an issue at all.
Just FYI, Electrum is a SPV wallet, which means that you don't need to download the whole Blockchain before using it. You will probably be able to manage your coins instantly after downloading the wallet.

What is a SPV wallet:

A Bitcoin implementation that does not verify everything, but instead relies on either connecting to a trusted node, or puts its faith in high difficulty as a proxy for proof of validity. BitCoinJ is an implementation of this mode.

I would still recommend you to just store your coins in Trezor. It is meant to be a hardware wallet that allows you to spend your coins in the day-by-day if you need to. And not necessarily to be a locked cold storage.
14202  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Coinbase sees complaints grow on: September 01, 2017, 06:05:34 PM
Probably an impact of the current high fees and transaction times.

Man imagine all the legal expenses for these.
I would say that the main issues are: lack of support, freezing accounts without good reasons and withdraw/deposits delays. Not really Bitcoin's fault, only a bad management from Coinbase.

Taken from the same article:

Quote
"The funds were supposed to be transferred to my checking account within three-to-five business days," one customer complained to the CFPB in May. "I need the money."

"Over the past few months, we’ve seen an unprecedented increase in the number of customers signing up to use Coinbase," wrote the company’s co-founder and CEO, Brian Armstrong, in a June 6 blog post. "As a result, our systems have been pushed to the limit. This has caused many customers to have a negative experience."
14203  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Does Exodus take fees? on: September 01, 2017, 04:57:47 PM
No. Just like shaggy404 said above, this is your change. The second amount is still on your control.
I don't think there is any wallet that charges fees for transactions. And If any of them do, you shouldn't be using them in the first place.

Quote
When the output of a transaction is used as the input of another transaction, it must be spent in its entirety. Sometimes the coin value of the output is higher than what the user wishes to pay. In this case, the client generates a new Bitcoin address, and sends the difference back to this address. This is known as change.

14204  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Why I can't withdraw from BITTREX on: September 01, 2017, 01:11:21 AM
Just wait for a reply - there is nothing else you can do. If you want to hurry things, you could try to ask for support on their Slack channel.

This is a quote from an older "Bittrex disabled my account" post.

[...] They said it would take 24 hours or longer to get unlocked, but I asked nicely on the slack channel and they undisabled my account [...]

Get an invite from http://slack.bittrex.com/ and then you log on to https://bittrex.slack.com if you want to try it.
14205  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What do you think are the biggest threats to Bitcoin prices in next 12 months on: September 01, 2017, 01:04:50 AM
The biggest threat BY FAR is the scalability issue... In order to grow further and further, bitcoin cant be capped at 3tx/s... VISA is doing 50k/s... we need a solution QUICK!
Aren't we getting one right now? It's called Segwit and Lightning Network.

or if you are into the bigger blocks yada yada, maybe you should be using Bitcoin Cash, since Core doesn't seems to be looking for a block size upgrade anytime soon.
14206  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Questions here (helping questions ) on: August 31, 2017, 09:48:14 PM
Can't you ask those questions to your campaign manager? It really depends from campaign to campaign.

1. How to know the number of participants who joined the campaign?
a. Check the campaign spreadsheets (most of them have one).
b. Ask in the thread?

2. How will I know if the post I made is counted for the valid post? How do campaign manegers evaluate the post you made? I really love to know how do they evaluate it to make it an valid post.
Read the campaign rules. It's not hard! You should try.

Your campaign for example:

Quote
  • Posts made in the following sections will not be counted as valid posts: Local Boards, Marketplace; Off-topic; Archival; Marketplace (Altcoins).
  • Posts with less than 80 characters will not be counted as valid posts.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2101398

You should know that before applying.
14207  Other / Meta / Re: mobile apps for bitcointalk? on: August 31, 2017, 05:14:03 PM
No. The only one that somehow "worked" was this one for Android[1]. But It was hella buggy and I couldn't even read posts with multiple pages. Now, it seems that it stopped working because of the new BitcoinTalk login captcha addition.

If I was you, I would wait for the new Beta forum software to get released.

14208  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Transaction Fee is Expensive !!! on: August 31, 2017, 01:54:48 AM
Of course is gonna be expensive if your coins are going through 2 services that charges fees.

How is that Bitcoin's fault? If you want to send 5BTC P2P to a friend, you are only going to pay one transaction fee that can be worth less than $1, and not 22% of your transaction.

Yesterday, for example, I sent a transaction with a $0.3 fee and It got confirmed in the same day.
How the hell can you get transaction fees less than $1? That would mean that LocalBitcoins is a total ripoff scam. Have a read of my thread question about my massive fees charged by them: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2134185.msg21331269#msg21331269

Their site says "Current outgoing bitcoin network fee: 0.00029576 BTC (Withdrawals)" then how does my fee charged end up being 0.00435292 BTC? That's an absolutely huge difference between and $1.40 quoted on their site and the $20 actually charged!!
Because they are overpricing their fees just like almost every wallet in the market.
e.g: I use Electrum to send my fees, but I also have Mycelium on my android and they want me to pay a fee of 466 sat/byte, while sometimes all I need is to send a tx with a 60 sat/byte fee.

They suggest you to pay high fees because other people are doing the same. And why people are paying high fees? Because their wallets are suggesting them to do so. So, is all their fault at the end.

P.s: I'm not saying it's all their fault. I know that blocks being full will also increase the price of the fees.
14209  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: [Unofficial] Exodus Wallet | Multi-Currency | Built-in Exchange on: August 30, 2017, 11:43:59 PM
I have read that fees of Exodus are very high, I  understand why as well.

I am just curious if anyone has 1 BTC what the current rate to transfer it out of an exodus wallet to a ledger nano s wallet would cost?
I also understand the fee will not always be the same I just want a general idea as I do not want to transfer BTC to exodus if the fee is too high
and have it stuck there.

Can someone with 1 BTC or even 5 BTC  see what the transfer out fee currently is at the time you read this.

Thanks.
It doesn't matter how much you are sending. The size of your transaction is the one making your transaction more expensive.

More inputs and outputs = higher fees. Most wallets will give you the size of your transaction and

14210  Other / Meta / Re: Report a thread. on: August 30, 2017, 09:38:29 PM
I have seen this all the time in the Digital Good board. One guy creating several threads, locking them, and selling fake stuff on Rocketr. Of course he had negative trust on both websites, but people don't care...

14212  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Address Reuse? How can I hide activity or at least put many layers? on: August 30, 2017, 06:07:33 PM
Yeah i know tumblers are good at what they do but you've got to take the risk that the site your using isnt going to run off with your bitcoins. Shapeshifting is an easier option imo but if your that paranoid that the exchange you sent them from, the jaxx shapeshift and the goverment are all chasing after your bitcoins then yeah go with the tumbler.

Better than that then use a more anonymous coin such as monero or dash which again you can shapeshift to easily.

It's not really paranoia. OP is asking for a way of hiding his transactions so no one can track them back to him.

about ShapeShift:

Quote
Since ShapeShift does not obscure information, it would be a horrible idea to use it as a mixer or similar. We state this in our Terms of Service. Further, we will always cooperate with reasonable requests for this information (from law enforcement or private investigation, we make no distinction).
Taken from this reddit comment from the ShapeShift team.

A post where someone is easily making progress on tracking a hacker from his transactions made with ShapeShift.
https://www.reddit.com/r/ethereum/comments/544y1p/some_blockchain_analysis_of_the_current_dos/
https://np.reddit.com/r/ethereum/comments/59adpy/ethereum_network_attackers_ip_address_is_traceable/d96z9sa/

about the risk of using mixers, you don't need to send 50BTC at once and hope that you don't get scammed. You can easily split your transactions in small amounts and do one at a time. If OP really wants privacy, he will probably use a method that really WORKS, regardless of its difficulty.
14213  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Address Reuse? How can I hide activity or at least put many layers? on: August 30, 2017, 05:15:07 PM
Instead of using a tumbler which could in theory be compromised wouldnt you be easier just installing something like jaxx and then shapeshifting to something else and then back again? The you can either keep it on your jaxx wallet or send it somewhere else.
How is using ShapeShift better than using a tumbler/mixer?

1. Mixers are made to anonymize your coins and keep your info private.

2. ShapeShift was made as a way of exchanging coins. They have your IP, and they can easily track your transactions and cooperate with the government by sharing with them all your history of transactions. Besides, they can also be easily compromised.

Either way i think you might be a bit paranoid though. The chances of an exchange getting hacked , your details leaked and then someone come after you are pretty slim. Theres no way they can be sure you own the bitcoin after a few transactions.
Which can't happen with a mixer, since most of them don't keep any data about your transactions and users.
14214  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: I can't find my wallet.dat on: August 30, 2017, 04:53:22 PM
http://docs.electrum.org/en/latest/faq.html

The default wallet file is called default_wallet which is created when you first run the application and located under the /wallets folder.

On Windows:
  • Show hidden files
  • Go to \Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Electrum\wallets (or %APPDATA%\Electrum\wallets)

On Mac:
  • Open Finder
  • Go to folder (shift+cmd+G) and type ~/.electrum

On Linux:
  • Home Folder
  • Go -> Location and type ~/.electrum
14215  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum Wallet segwit supported? on: August 29, 2017, 11:46:37 PM
They don't support Segwit for now.

But I would say that they are pretty close on doing so.
One of their last commits is related to Segwit: https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/commit/5bf3b26476fc41a1a41e0d2d684779f873c2f2ad
14216  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: New to mining... advice please... on: August 29, 2017, 09:49:42 PM
Your post will receive more attention and replies if you move it to the Mining > Mining Support board[1].
You can do that by looking for "move topic" at the bottom left part of the page. Good luck!

14217  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor and SegWit on: August 29, 2017, 07:03:26 PM
Can't you just send your coins to a new SW address with a super low fee? It may take some time but the address is yours anyway.

I don't see how doing one transaction may lead you to bankruptcy. It's not like you won't ever spend your Bitcoins, right?

Edit: Transactions of 20 sat/byte getting confimed right now.
14218  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Your first betting? on: August 29, 2017, 06:20:08 PM
I first started betting in Counter-Strike professional matches and skins-based roulette websites. In two weeks I went from $50 to $1000. Yes, I was pretty lucky, but I am actually thankful for that, because I needed to cashout my skins and the solution was pretty simple: Bitcoin. I didn't knew Bitcoin very well until this point.
14219  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: A real Question about Wallets on: August 29, 2017, 03:59:48 PM
Thank you.

But then, what you suggest is having a balance between what you control (an actual wallet) and what you can invest due to your money on exchanges?

> May i ask you what wallet do you use and how do you exchange?
Only keep on exchanges the amount you want to trade daily and that you may afford to lose if anything happens.

The rest of your coins (and the biggest part of them) should be kept in a safe wallet which you crontrol the private keys. The one I recommend you to use is Electrum. Never store all your coins in any exchange or third party service!
14220  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Wallet.dat file - where is it in Copay, Exodus, Electrum & Jaxx in Windows? on: August 29, 2017, 01:46:05 AM
Wallet.dat file - where is it in Copay, Exodus, Electrum & Jaxx in Windows? I would like to make sure thata I securely encrypt it for protection & to copy it somewhere else for a backup.
You should just follow the step-by-step from each wallet to backup them. Usually they will give you a seed phrase that can be used to restore your wallet in case of any problem.

Electrum: save your backup seed if you are using a HD wallet or backup the wallet file inside the Electrum folder at %APPDATA%\Electrum\wallets

Copay, Jaxx and Exodus: save your backup seed.
I've already backed up the wallets and saved the back up seed but I would also like to encrypt the wallet again my own way just to be safer from someone trying to steal and hack my wallet.

Electrum - ok, that one is easy to find the wallet file but not sure where to find it for Copay, Jaxx & Exodus.
As I said, for most wallets, you should backup your seed as it's explained in every software and not necessarily copy a file.

Copay: Go to Settings -> Wallets -> Choose your wallet -> More Options -> Export Wallet -> File/Text -> Set up a password -> Download.
Jaxx: Click the Menu icon at the top right -> Tools -> Backup Wallet.
Exodus: Go to the "Backup" screen and just follow the wizard.
