What if we silently stole all of Bill Gates' money and used it for welfare? Would that make many people happy?

My main point is that if socialism is the best way to make Bulgarians happy, then they should be socialist. It wouldn't make me happy, though. So I live in 'MURICA!!111

As long as it's voluntary, I don't care how they organize their society. Like you said, whatever makes them happy.
Uh-oh. What if involuntary organization makes them the happiest?
1563  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Guns on: August 07, 2012, 02:11:58 AM
I believe that the statistics would be screwed because people drive a lot, so there's bound to be more deaths. Go ahead with the first set of statistics though.

The main problem is this:
Quote
Firearm accidents happen completely outside of the normal operation of the device, unless there is a mechanical failure.
And automotive accidents almost always happen when the car is on. Don't you think there are more automotive accidents because people drive them so much? Not due to regulation or any of that crap.

Go ahead with the first set of statistics though.

Please also provide statistics for chainsaw accidents per 100,000. And if possible, please provide each of the three statistics out of 100,000 operation hours, as well. My commute isn't short, but the amount of time I spend each day near a chainsaw is, so I assume I'm more likely to be killed in a traffic accident than by a chainsaw. However, if I commuted to a forest where I chopped down trees with a chainsaw for 8 hours straight... Wink

Aha!
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=98916.0#new

If forcibly taxing a few rich people to make many poor people happy works, and it results in more total happiness than a charity would, then that taxation should be done. That's a big if-and, but I stand by the if-and-then. (Logically, taking the ((a AND b) --> c) as a whole, the whole is only false if (a is true, and b is true, and c is false)).
1567  Other / Politics & Society / The purpose of life and the goal of a perfect society on: August 07, 2012, 12:47:29 AM
1. As a human, my purpose in life is the pursuit of happiness. I attempt to make the decisions which will result in the most happiness for myself.
2. Empathy means that when others are happy, I am happy. This drives donations to charities, consoling people, and not knifing people for their pocket change which I can spend on donuts.
3. The goal of any society, whether communist, capitalist, anarchist, statist, or surrealist, should be to promote the best total happiness.
4. If it is possible to torture one man or woman in such a way that everyone else in the society is very happy, this should be done. However, it is not possible due to empathy. The members of the society would empathize with, or "feel bad for" the person being tortured; "feeling bad for" is not happiness.
5. If it is possible to torture me in such a way that everyone else in the society is very happy, then I volunteer. Ironically, however, I would be happy with myself for doing such a noble deed and making so many other people happy. Thus, I would feel physical pain, but I might still be happy. The torture would "fail" due to empathy.
6. So there. The meaning of life, and the reason that there is no "one true method" of society, be it AnCap or StatSoc -- the one which makes people the most happy should be used. Here in 'murica, maybe AnCap would make people happiest; maybe not.
7. Please pass another joint Grin
1568  Other / Off-topic / Re: Have you ever gotten any donations to your signature address? on: August 07, 2012, 12:34:59 AM
I have received multiple unsolicited donations to my sig address; it's also handy to say "just send it to my sig" when dealing with small-value transactions that don't need to be anonymous.

And maybe there is no magnet in a box; God just attracts iron filings to the box in the exact manner that a magnet would. For practical purposes, it's better to "believe" that there's a magnet there though, especially when it behaves like a magnet in every way that you test it.

I'll bite.
Sure, the government does provide some services which are useful; I might even go so far as to say that a subset of those are "necessary."

If chainsaws become a large factor in preventable American deaths, then I will support any bill which can reduce accidental chainsaw deaths. This includes certification for chopping wood, juggling, or any other chainsaw-related activity which kills a substantial number of people not operating chainsaws.

Fortunately for the residents of the USA, accidental non-operator chainsaw deaths aren't very common here.

Given that a relatively large number of people who don't own guns are injured or killed each year in gun accidents, I believe it worthwhile to attempt to reduce that number. If requiring free certification for legal gun ownership translates into every legal gun owner being educated on proper storage and handling of guns, then I support that, because I believe that the latter translates into fewer accidents and therefore fewer deaths.

Cars are heavily regulated, licensed, and require mandatory training. Yet they kill more people every year than do firearms. If you restrict it to accidents, they probably kill more people every day than firearms do in a year (Just a guess, but I'd wager the numbers would back me up)
That's a perfectly fine fact. However, it doesn't make an argument. How many cars are there? How many hours per day are they used? How many people per day drive them while intoxicated? I'd be willing to bet that there are more car-hours than firearm-hours every day, and more intoxicated-car-hours than firearm-hours.

Cars ARE heavily regulated, licensed, and require mandatory training. And almost everyone uses them. If they weren't heavily regulated, licensed, etc, then I bet that there would be even more car deaths.

I did play online quite a bit until I lost a few thousand when the government came in and "helped us all out" by shutting the site down and taking all of my money.

I heard recently that PokerStars had bought Full Tilt and were going to make all the Full Tilt players whole.

Hey does that Micon character play online poker for BTC at any of the online BTC poker sites?

I believe he's in some way invested in Seals With Clubs.  He's a "pro" on Seals, and some claim he's a part owner of the site.  This thread for instance starts by claiming Micon owns part of Seals, and quickly degenerates into a "bitcoin sucks" thread.
OH GOD WHY DID YOU LINK TO THAT THREAD Cry Cry Shocked
THE STUPIDITY... IT HURTS MY FACE

Faith is belief without evidence or proof. Belief is the acceptance of what you understand. Belief is not necessarily truth.
Scientists have faith that dark matter exists. Galaxies are held in place by mass they can't see. The so called mass holding galaxies in place is not necessarily dark matter.
Interestingly, however, we have a large amount of evidence suggesting the existence of dark matter. We can't see it, but it fits in with the theories and has perceivable effects on the universe. Think "magnet in a box:" you can't see the magnet inside, but you can certainly see that iron filings are attracted to the box. The magnetic field it creates leads you to assume that there is a magnet inside the box. This is wildly different than most religious beliefs.
1575  Other / Off-topic / Re: Christians - is it fake ? on: August 06, 2012, 07:14:45 PM
My conclusion is believing in only what you see is just as bad as believing in things you don't see or can't prove, There should be a balance.
We already disagree by the first sentence. You can't prove that God doesn't want me to kill your family. I can't prove that Jesus never came back to life. Take a logic class and learn about "burden of proof"

There is absolutely no information on that site whatsoever; it doesn't even tell you how much you will be paid. It also tries to mimick BitVisitor, a trusted website. I call scam.
1577  Other / Off-topic / Re: Christians - is it fake ? on: August 06, 2012, 03:55:19 AM
Our perception is 100% consistent with reality because reality is all there is. The idea of an "inconsistency" with reality is meaningless.

Is it? what if we are assuming we are walking forward yet we are walking left.
That would not matter in the slightest. At all. In any way. Since everyone perceives the same direction, and there is no evidence to the contrary, it simply would not matter if it was "wrong" in the eyes of an undetectable deity. Again with the FSM.

What if you are assuming that there is no flying spaghetti monster, but there is? What if your senses telling you that there is no FSM are wrong? What if he changes the results of science with his invisible noodly appendage?

Answer: nothing. What if...? nothing. It doesn't change how we live.

What if there is a deity urging me to become a suicide bomber? I'm assuming there isn't, but what if there is?

I really question why you guys are donating anything to Payb.tc, given that he's currently making over $9000 per week off of this. That's about $470k per year, for those of you who are bad at math.
Maged knows something we don't...

Everyone pull your coins!  Wink

Though, lots of love for Maged. Don't quite agree with his stance on BS&T, but that's it.
Don't agree with his math either, but he's a good mod

How many of the victims had guns? Was this the third shooting this year in a "defenseless victim zone?"
