Okay guys, the transaction went perfectly smooth and I bought my bitcoins! Thanks for the help.

Butterzone and dothebeats have some active imaginations.

You're right, any crime in crowded surveilled public spaces is just a figment of our imaginations.  Roll Eyes
1844  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: First Localbitcoins trade on: August 16, 2015, 05:13:22 PM
Almost all CCTV cameras don't have sufficient resolution, focus, and zoom for facial recognition, and even if they did, would not guarantee a cop appears instantly to stop the crime, so criminals can safely give no fucks.
Crowds? Ha. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bystander_effect

Meet past armed guards manning metal detector & x-ray in public controlled access buildings, if you can't arm yourself, because no one else will save you.

You got me even more panicked. we'll meet in a public place, it's a very large building and I assume there are armed guards there.

Assurance is better than assumption. Even if there are armed guards there, you still should be alert as always because there is no guarantee for everyone's safety nowadays (unless you hire a bodyguard for yourself). No one could ever know if those guards are with him, so yeah just be alert and stay safe. Wink

You think the first time a criminal is told the meeting location by the OP, they will already have bribed all the guards OP will know are armed there?

If you're dealing with organized crime who've bribed or "own" everyone in public/private armed service, you're f-ed.
1845  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: First Localbitcoins trade on: August 16, 2015, 05:06:22 PM
Unless you see them there every day posted where you can plan to meet (and for them to deter criminals), don't assume. Regulations for armed guards may make it economically infeasible for them to be employed at that location full-time.

1849  Economy / Auctions / BTC & physical goods lot auction on: August 14, 2015, 06:39:49 AM
Description: Lot of cross-linked inventory listed on http://tbz1.com and http://fs.tbz1.com (no other subdomains) AND an amount of BTC equal to the difference between the starting and winning bid. This amount of BTC will be funded to a (PRNG generated) BIP38 encrypted private key, split amongst puzzle pieces which will be safely tucked into the lot immediately prior to pickup.

Starting bid: (BitcoinAverage's 24h sliding average for the $7100 USD the inventory is worth according to my hundreds of hours over more than a decade of research)

Reserve bid: BTCSecret, SHA256 (salted) hash e059499d8c720470292d44d6d61cdb5eb4d4008287e46892704d7522fd1f3157

Lot & BTC will be locked when the reserve is met, so nobody will be able to buy any of it out from under the bidders.

Maximum bid: BTCSecret, SHA256 (salted) hash 0b3854a319b73e69c4837a41a0ab8f8bc5e5af8d345e3223c071446a6455f3f0

End date and time: Whichever comes first, either 1) 12 hours after the time of a bid meeting or being the first to exceed the secret reserve bid amount OR 2) someone meeting or being the first to exceed the secret maximum bid amount

I will do my best to post STOP BIDDING, AUCTION WON BY [winner] immediately when the 12 hour countdown hits zero, or I see a topic reply notification email meeting or exceeding the maximum before the countdown hits zero.

Delivery: Pickup only in San Diego, CA, USA within 45 calendar days after payment.

I'm dead serious about liquidating this lot, but I'm not going to be liable for shipping cost, shipping packing, shipping damage, shipping theft, or anything else involved in shipping this lot en masse (that's probably hundreds of pounds & a U-Haul Cargo Van worth) myself. Nor will I be liable for storing it past 45 calendar days after payment, so multiple pickup reminders will be posted in this topic over the 45 calendar day pickup window.

Pickup information: The winner will be provided upon payment, via a PGP-encrypted (to the public key you PGP clearsigned your bid with) PM on this forum 1) the BIP38 passphrase for the encrypted private key on the puzzle pieces 2) a randomly generated code to give to their trusted agent if they need to use one (who will then give it to me so I can verify I'm not giving the lot to a fake agent), or to me directly. Regardless of whether their trusted agent runs off with the winner's lot after giving me the randomly generated code, the BIP38 passphrase will prevent the thief agent from also stealing the winner's BTC if they correctly assemble the puzzle pieces.

Local rules:
1) All replies (other than mine) until further notice must be bids PGP-clearsigned by each bidder using the text in the Code box below, without modification except between each set of {} marks:
Code:
I, {insert Bitcointalk username here}, bid {insert bid amount here} for the lot of cross-linked inventory listed on http://tbz1.com and http://fs.tbz1.com (no other subdomains) AND an amount of [btc] equal to the difference between the starting and my winning bid.

Furthermore, I swear or affirm the following:
My bid above is legally binding and cannot be retracted if it meets or exceeds the secret reserve bid amount (hashed above).
If my bid exceeded the secret maximum bid amount (hashed above), I will only be bound to pay the secret maximum amount out of my excess bid.
As of now, my Bitcointalk member rank is Jr. Member or above.
I did not have clear & convincing negative feedback of stealing BTC or owing BTC from broken contracts BEFORE the start of this auction.
I will pay the full amount of BTC no later than 7 calendar days after being provided a PGP-clearsigned unique payment address by TheButterZone, and if I fail to do so, I will accept all lawful consequences, including, but not limited to, a negative feedback with risked BTC.
If I was not the highest bidder, but all higher bidders than me failed to pay within each of their 7 calendar day windows, my bid remains legally binding in case I end up being the next highest bidder after them.
I will personally, or have a trusted agent, pick up the lot in San Diego, CA, USA within 45 calendar days after my payment.
I can decrypt 1) PGP-encrypted messages to the public key that I'm PGP clearsigning this bid with AND 2) the BIP38-encrypted private key with the passphrase (after I decrypt the PGP-encrypted message containing the passphrase & correctly assemble the puzzle pieces).
If I or my trusted agent won't pick up the lot in San Diego, CA, USA within 45 calendar days after my payment, I will PGP clearsign another message instructing TheButterZone which San Diego, CA thrift store to donate the lot to in my name*, and also a decent charity to donate the BIP38'd BTC to in my name*. Otherwise TheButterZone will chose recipients for me and put the donations in my name*. *and get receipt(s) for my tax purposes.
If I find it too difficult to correctly assemble the puzzle pieces once the lot is in my possession and I can take pictures of key items OR my trusted agent turns thief, I will ask TheButterZone to PGP encrypt his backup of my BIP38 private key, to the public key that I'm PGP clearsigning this bid with.

2) No more questions. The time for questions was during the previous Marketplace & Auctions topics that had over a week of combined discussion time, let alone the >10 years of advertising. If your questions haven't already been answered satisfactorily enough for you to bid, then don't.
3) Thinly-veiled posting to boost ad campaign numbers is prohibited.
1850  Economy / Exchanges / Coinbase hired Roman Shytlman - prepare for "hack" & >24K BTC loss! on: August 13, 2015, 10:36:18 PM
Good to know @coinbase has the man responsible for the loss of 24,000 BTC (https://bitcoinmagazine.com/2139/bitfloor-hacked-250000-missing/) on their team (coinbase.com/about)

"Roman is a software engineer who has worked at all levels of the software stack from robotics and embedded systems to web frontends and mobile apps. Prior to Coinbase, he founded CourseOff and worked in high frequency trading. When not making, he enjoys ultimate frisbee, snowboarding, and short walks on the beach."

Is Coinbase going to be paying the remainder due to all of us Roman Shytlman/Bitfloor victims? Reminded of how Kraken is handling the Mark Karpeles/MtGox victims.

Even if Roman set himself up so he could escape legal liability for the "hack" (allegedly unencrypted wallet backup; negligent at best, criminal at worst), it's still morally wrong to reward him if he has no intention of ever paying back more than the single-digit percentage of the total stolen BTC.

ETA: Coinbase scrubbed their /about of staff, but archive.org FTW:

1853  Economy / Services / Re: LOOKING TO HIRE: salesman on: August 13, 2015, 07:20:23 PM
Probably your salesman would have to be trusted enough as the escrow. Buyer pays salesman/escrow, salesman/escrow tells you to push domain over to buyer, buyer authorizes salesman/escrow to release funds to you, salesman/escrow sends you the amount -10%.

SE/Social Engineering is a euphemism for getting people to do things illegally, unethically, and/or against their company's policy if they were told the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

Description: Lot of cross-linked inventory listed on http://tbz1.com and http://fs.tbz1.com (no other subdomains) AND an amount* of BTC equal to the difference between the starting and winning bid. Lot & BTC will be locked when the reserve is met, so nobody will be able to buy any of it out from under the bidders - screw the money; I have rules!

Payment methods accepted: BTC ONLY.

Starting bid:

Reserve bid: BTCSecret, hash e059499d8c720470292d44d6d61cdb5eb4d4008287e46892704d7522fd1f3157

Maximum bid: BTCSecret, hash 0b3854a319b73e69c4837a41a0ab8f8bc5e5af8d345e3223c071446a6455f3f0

End date and time: Whichever comes first, either 1) 12 hours after the time of a bid meeting or being the first to exceed the secret reserve bid amount OR 2) someone meeting or being the first to exceed the secret maximum bid amount (winning bidder will be required to be reduce their payment to the maximum, if they exceeded it)

I will do my best to post STOP BIDDING, AUCTION WON BY [winner] immediately when the 12 hour countdown hits zero, or I see a topic reply notification email meeting or exceeding the maximum before the countdown hits zero.

Bidder requirements: Must PGP clearsign each bid when replying to this topic. Must be Junior Member or above. Must not have clear and convincing negative feedback of stealing BTC or owing BTC from broken contracts BEFORE the start of the auction. Any bids from users not meeting these 3 requirements should be deleted. If you won't personally, or have a trusted agent, pick up the lot within 45 calendar days of payment***, do not bid, as bids over the reserve are legally binding if you met those 3 requirements.

If you bid anyway, win and pay, you're bound to pick up the lot or have it all picked up by your trusted agent no matter what within 45 calendar days of payment. I'm dead serious about liquidating my inventory, but I'm not going to be liable for shipping cost, shipping packing, shipping damage, shipping theft, or anything else involved in shipping stuff en masse myself. Nor will I be liable storing it past 45 calendar days for you. Multiple pickup reminders will be posted in this topic over the 45 calendar day pickup window. If the lot isn't picked up in that window, then you'd better tell me which San Diego, CA thrift store to donate the lot to in your name, and which decent charity to send your BIP38'd BTC to in your name, otherwise I'll chose recipients for you and send their receipts.

Delivery: PICKUP IN SAN DIEGO, CA, USA ONLY.

Pickup information: The winner will be provided upon payment, via a PGP-encrypted (to the public key you clearsigned your bid with) PM on this forum 1) the BIP38 passphrase 2) a randomly generated code to give to their trusted agent if they need to use one (who will then give it to me so I can verify I'm not giving the lot to a fake agent), or to me directly. Regardless of whether their trusted agent runs off with the winner's lot after giving me the randomly generated code, the BIP38 passphrase will prevent the thief agent from also stealing the winner's BTC after arranging the post-it notes properly**.

Non-paying bidder consequences: If the winning bidder reneges on their binding bid (7 days of non-payment ***to an unfunded BTC address I PGP clearsign and PM to the winning bidder***, reviewable by staff, at which point a negative feedback will be left for the winning amount), the next highest qualified bidder will be required to pay to another unfunded BTC address I PGP clearsign and PM to them, rinse and repeat as the 7 days of non-payment for each next highest bidder run out and negative feedback is left on each.

*this amount of BTC will be funded to a (PRNG generated) BIP38 encrypted private key, split up into a series of post-its, like a puzzle** you just have to arrange in the right order, and those post-its will be safely tucked into the lot immediately prior to pickup.

**If the winner can't solve the puzzle once the lot is in their possession and can take pictures of key items, or their trusted agent turns thief, I'll have a backup of the BIP38 private key and passphrase I can encrypt in PM to the winner, using their same PGP public key.

Quickseller suggested that I "provide the SHA256 (salted) hash of both the reserve and the maximum in order to avoid potential claims that this changed after the auction started". So while I'm not sure if I'm doing that correctly even after Googling around, I have duplicated the results in Terminal of
Code:
echo -n (number of BTC) (64 random hexadecimal characters)  | shasum -a 256
resulting in each hash above, and saved the actual commands to disk for copying and pasting if anyone claims I changed them.
1857  Economy / Goods / Re: Any Canadians or Travelers? $96 in spendable Canadian Paper currency-$40 on: August 12, 2015, 07:28:53 PM
Do you have a bank or credit union account? If they exchange foreign currency upon deposit (especially our neighboring country), their customers'/members' conversion fee should be much less than the $56 you'd be losing here. Mine used to be $10 or less before they discontinued the service. Even a currency exchange should incur less of a fee than $56.

If nowhere else, ask around at Harriman-West Airport (~3 miles away), someone might exchange for you there.

Unfortunately even if I could easily go somewhere with them and say "can you counterfeit check these and if they're real, convert them?", I only have 1 ozt silver bar left and IDK how much silver weight in my silverware.

I use Tdbank which won't accept foreign currency the only  Bank around here that does Foreign Exchange is Bank of America....One located in Albany N.Y. the other Greenfield and you have to be a customer.

Harriman airport is just down the road from me but it's not what you think....It's a tiny airport more for small prop planes,Helicopters etc.

I thought charter flights (or drug traffickers flying under radar LOL) might go from there to Canada. Combined with this, sounds like you need to move, or take a road trip to meet a BofA customer to do it for you.
1858  Economy / Goods / Re: FS/FT 26 Grams gold 139 Grams of silver Scrap Jewelry on: August 12, 2015, 06:43:14 PM
No precious metal dealers or jewelers in your area that advertise they buy and trade?

Oh yes there are some dealers around here that love to take advantage of people. Sent for a prepaid envelope from cashforgoldusa if no buyers when the envelope comes off it goes to them.

CFG is any better? Have people been leaving Yelp reviews on the dealers saying stuff like "they refused to pay within a few dollars per ozt of spot"? Since you know the weight and purity, you can calculate your spot price.
