8801  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: If i wanted to find somone who was reciving bitcoins, how hard would it be? on: October 25, 2011, 03:26:19 PM
If you knew their receiving address you could search for it in blockexplorer. It would tell you how much has been sent to that address.

Here are some raw notes I used for a presentation at the Booth school of business in Chicago. Anyone who wants can use it for your own projects.

I have nothing against speculation, but wider adoption is surely linked to bitcoin's utility as money. There is only so much growth in speculation.

So, his credentials are that he is a precious metal expert? Ok, well then I should use my expertise in bitcoin to write an article about how gold is a ponzi scheme.  Roll Eyes

Are the chances of this becoming available on Apple's app store still about 0%?
8806  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How long does it take for deposits to bitcoin client? on: October 22, 2011, 03:04:08 PM
...

Do i have to keep my bitcoin client running for it to be downloading block chains?

still in the 140k when the block chain is currently in the 150k numbers

Yes, and it does take a long time.  Note that the downloaded blocks are tied to your wallet.dat file and not the client. If you remove your wallet file and restart the client, a new wallet.dat file is created and it starts from 0 blocks.

False

Luckily.
Oh wow. I'm wrong. (again)  I must be thinking of an earlier version of the client.

Your coin is likely safe. You just need to download the blockchain. Once your caught up you will see your bitcoin transaction appear and start confirming. Next time you use the client you will only have to download new blocks created since the last time.

If you want to see your money now, go to http://blockexplorer.com and search for the address it was sent to.

8811  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Diaspora accepting Bitcoin donations! on: October 21, 2011, 05:37:32 PM
When we have an organization like diaspora adopting BTC,  can we make a point of encouraging them to spend their bitcoins instead of cashing them out?  It is better for the bitcoin economy and easier for them to use.
8812  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I have an idea for a Bitcoin service... on: October 21, 2011, 03:19:34 PM
Is it a secret idea or can you tell us something about it?
Sorry, I don't know coffee beans about java.
8813  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Use Case - Bitcoin intl money transfers on: October 20, 2011, 08:01:23 PM
China is a good example. It is silly hard to pay someone in China from abroad.
Imagine what would happen if bicoin captured the remittance market. Huge amounts of money are moved by foreign workers who support families in their home country.

I may be able to make this.  Smiley
8815  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Am I the only one here... on: October 20, 2011, 07:38:13 PM
It looks to me like something is up. About a week ago we started getting lots of new accounts that bash bitcoin. We have seen this before. I don't understand someones motivation to hear about bitcoin then set up an account to repeatedly say how much they hate it. Unless their greedy motivation is to drive down price while they still can. Greed is easy to understand.
8816  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Are there alot of rich people with bitcoins? on: October 20, 2011, 07:15:42 PM
Why anyone hasn't gotten out of Bitcoins at this point is beyond me.

Dude, you registered 6 days ago. Why then did you just come in to bitcoin?
8817  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Silk Road was the best thing that has ever happened to Bitcoins. on: October 20, 2011, 07:08:05 PM
I don't doubt the former, but I do doubt the latter.  Certainly users and vendors will occasionally screw up and break their autonomy, but users have to be fairly tech and privacy savvy just to get onto Silk Road.  These guys are certainly not the "low hanging fruit" of the illicit drug trade.  Most of them would be as hard to prosecute as to locate.  How often do you hear of some rich, educated kid getting busted with drugs?  It's not like they don't buy it, they just deal with a smarter class of criminal.

Your probably right. It would be a complex case, and they would likely go after the sellers if anyone.
I'm not even sure what SR could be charged with? since they do not sell the drugs themselves.
8818  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Beginner needs help! on: October 20, 2011, 06:57:55 PM
This confuses a lot of new users.
Basically, when someone sends you BTC the record of the transfer becomes part of the blockchain. You will receive your coins when you have downloaded the block containing your transaction. As additional blocks are created and downloaded, additional confirmations will appear.  If you do not download the blockchain, your bitcoin is safe and only you can spend them. They will wait forever until your wallet is caught up with the blockchain.

Bitcoins are only useful for illegal activities...

...
Why would it be useless for legal stuff?

Yes, why? I use it for legal purchases and find it far superior to credit cards, paypal, etc.
And for those who think it is perfect for illegal purchases, I hope you have done your homework. Bitcoin is NOT anonymous. It can be, if carefully done in conjunction with TOR and other methods.  I would guess that SR is constantly monitored by law enforcement. One day they are going to put all the data together and start rounding up customers.
