8981  Economy / Speculation / Re: How much of a loss are you guys in? on: August 09, 2011, 05:04:24 PM
Loss? I long ago pulled out my initial "investment" and now make money with the casino's chips. I can't loose.
It's easy to be profitable here. Just wait for some unqualified rant about the sky falling, buy during the ensuing panic, then sell a week later when the price comes back.
It works again and again. Wink

Is the glass half empty or half full?

The glass has the same volume of liquid in it.
It is completely full. Bottom half with water, top half with air.

I welcome your opinions. If bitcoin needs kind and loving words to succeed it is not going to.
I believe it will keep growing because it is a fundamentally good idea who's time has come. No matter what you or I say.

Quote
Bower and Chorley

In 1991, self-professed pranksters Doug Bower and Dave Chorley made headlines claiming it was they who started the phenomenon in 1978 by making actual circles on crops with the use of simple tools.[4] After their announcement, in a demonstration the two men made a crop circle in one hour.
It's fun to daydream. Grin

I am more of a skeptic than most. But SETI is a very worthwhile project.  This is real science and not some kind of fringe pseudoscience. They are not looking for spaceships or secret conspiracies. They are looking for a patterned EM signal.  If someone tried looking at Earth with a radio telescope, they would find us.  So why not look?

It's been stated numerous times by many intelligent people that intelligent life would not be using radio waves to communicate. We're almost past that now as humans. If you want to see intelligent communication, watch this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pO3bo-T1qhA

Embarrassed  So, what do the crop circles say? And how is flying through the universe to leave a circle in a field better than radio waves?

P.S. The UK based prankster group that made the first crop circles have long ago admitted it was a hoax.

Two can play at this game,

If you believe they are so valuable, why don't you buy mine at $15 a piece.

lol touché   Cheesy
Lol, you really didn't see the flip-side to your argument before you made it? SMH. These are the Bitcoin optimists? People that can't notice a biased argument?
I never thought he would sell cheap and of course I don't overpay.  So we are back to market price.
Maybe I will start a provocative thread titled "MARKET PRICES ARE A FUNCTION OF SUPPLY AND DEMAND!!! THIS IS B.S.!!!"

hey GeniuSxBoY, can I have your bitcoins. I mean they are worthless and soon you will be paying me to take them, so...
Just use the address in my sig. But I warn you this offer is only for 24hrs. By tomorrow I may have to charge you 5% to take them off your hands.
Money always speaks louder than words. Willing to put some up in support of your argument?

So if he is claiming they were lost to a hardware failure, where is the HD? Would he/they allow a forensic analysis?

Where abouts does it say that?

It may not.  Smiley
Excuse my ignorance if i'm wrong, but i thought people were saying mybitcoin "lost" their wallet. I assumed that meant a hard disc crash.
8990  Economy / Economics / Re: Recession Imminent on: August 05, 2011, 04:41:27 PM
I love how the press talks about "the recovery" as though it is destine to happen.  I will believe in a recovery when I see a reason for demand to increase.

Bitcoin will skyrocket again, and it's disingenuous to say otherwise. You are an enemy of BTC
Fellow peer, I hope your right. That is what i think will happen also.
I'm no enemy of bitcoin. Embarrassed  I have been spending my own money to promote bitcoin. I spoke to a university business school just Tue. about it, and arranged another lecture at an upcoming BarCamp.

However, I also know that the Oracle of Delphi was just a drugged up teenage girl. Despite that fact one of the greatest civilizations of all time often based their future on her rantings.
8993  Economy / Speculation / A note on predicting the future on: August 05, 2011, 04:08:09 PM
 It cant be done.
Nothing wrong with guessing, but make no mistake guessing where bitcoin prices will go is all one can do. This is no different than "predictions" about the DJIA. Expert market analysts do only slightly better than a coin toss at best.

Each day a new batch of threads claiming to know what will happen next appears and then falls apart. If you are determined to "invest" in bitcoin you should never put in more than you can afford to completely loose. BTC is an extremely risky investment. It was never meant to be used that way and no one is going to bail you out if the price drops. There is market manipulation and all sorts of shenanigans in this completely unregulated environment. We have all seen people panic sell then come here trying to sue Satoshi. Do your homework and don't think that someone has the answer for you.

8994  Economy / Speculation / Re: We'll be back to $13-14 by end of week. Know how I know? on: August 05, 2011, 03:42:18 PM
P.S. If you have a 401k or something like that, you are not an investor, you are a follower.

Foolish comment of the day.  What investor doesn't have a 401k?  One without a job would be my only guess...  The investors I know all have 401k or 403b, IRA, Roth IRA, brokerage & money market accounts...
Most people have no idea what they are investing in with their 401k. A guy in suit at work handed them a form and they picked a few menu items.  I'm not saying that a 401k has no merit as an investment vehicle, but if you don't know what specific companies your managers are investing your money in then don't fool yourself into thinking your Gordon Gecko.

You have got to stop getting your geopolitical information from Gaddafi's fax machine.
The events in Libya show how irrelevant the base is not an example of it's growing power.
Gaddafi is a corrupt dictator who's crimes have caught up with him. Nothing more.

For those interested in securing your privacy on the Internet... The time to act was in the early 1990's.

My Kung-Fu is insufficient for the task. But I like your idea. If there were a BTC vending machine in my city, it would be the only way I would buy them. Please keep us posted on your project!
8998  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: New and need help please... on: August 04, 2011, 08:19:02 PM
Look around these forums and the wiki. It's not always well organized but there is a lot of info. For listing a service you would like to provide, you want to post in the "marketplace" section of these forums.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=5.0
You need have a post count of 50 to post there or you can request to be "whitelisted" by a moderator.  If you want to be whitelisted don't post anything crazy or hurtful.
As with any sale a low price will get more responses.

Oh, and welcome fellow peer!
8999  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: New and need help please... on: August 04, 2011, 06:19:48 PM
Sure. I should say that I'm not a miner.
But for example I visited a solo mine operation last week. It was profitable but required a large investment. This operation used 20 PCs with four video cards each. It required upgraded wiring for the house and 50k BTU cooling system for the mine room. The cost of electricity was over $1000/month.
So, your either all in or not in at all.

There are many pools you could join (deepbit is the largest). Just look rround these forums and you will find info on your options. You may not be able to post in the mining section but you can message people ( i think) or go to the pool's website. Upon accepting you they should help you get started with their rules. Do your homework, some pools are better than others.

Your idea about selling a service or goods is also a way to get bitcoins. Price something cheep enough and your in business.

I hate to pee in your shoe but mining is not an easy way to obtain bitcoins. Unless you are setting up multiple computers with multiple video cards it is going to take a loooong time and cost a bunch of money in electricity.
For the computer you described, your best bet may be pool mining. In that arrangement your computer will work with others. When one of the computers discovers a block, all members of the pool get a cut of the reward.
If your lucky a steady trickle of bitcoins will come in each week. By yourself,  it likely will take years of mining 24/7 to find a block.
