1141  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][LISK] Lisk | ICO | Decentralized Application & Sidechain Platform on: February 15, 2016, 08:02:18 PM
As I understand it, the fact that a) Lisk uses Javascript for DAPP development and b) Lisk DAPPS will each run on their own sidechain, are 2 great advantages of Lisk over Ethereum.  Are there other advantages?  And to be fair and balanced, what about disadvantages of Lisk vs. Ethereum?

Also, are DAPP sidechains secured by the Lisk network, or do the sidechains need to have their own block signers?

Thanks in advance.  Very exciting project!

Advantages:

- Lisk offers a whole package for dapps, i.e. frontend and backend. That means you also have a decentralized hosted frontend of the dapp instead of accessing it through a centralized server which is often the case at Ethereum. (see: Gnosis & Augur)

- Not so sure about Ethereum here, but Lisk runs on all devices. On a 9$ C.H.I.P. or a Raspberry Pi. And this is enough to secure Lisk AND several sidechains! I also had it running on a 64MB VPS once.

- Our client, I hope you saw it. In comparison to Ethereum we have a GUI developed and maintained by the core team. It will always have the latest features and is really simple to use.

- Inbuilt Dapp Store which lists all available dapps on the network and will be enhanced greatly in the future.

Differences:

- While Ethereum is a smart contract platform, Lisk is a dapp platform. That means at Ethereum you can only develop single smart contracts which costs real ETH for every step, and you need to combine several contracts to form one dapp.

- You can only develop the dapp backend on Ethereum, on Lisk you can develop the whole package (see above) of frontend and backend.

Disadvantages:

- At Lisk you can't develop smart contracts which are always being performed by all miners on the network.

- Headstart of Ethereum and we don't have a Vitalik. Smiley

One other question.  Have you secured any exchanges for Lisk to trade on after launch?  Thanks.

We are public since two weeks and have generated quite a buzz already. I'm sure we will be listed on several ones soon after the launch. We will actively pursue this 1-2 weeks into the ICO. Smiley

To name a few we definitely will contact:

- Poloniex
- Bittrex
- BTC38

LiskHQ,
is web wallet fully functional?
Or its just for testnet?

It's just a testnet. The production blockchain will be launched after the ICO.

Was meint ihr?

Hallo thandie,

Smiley

I like the fact that Lisk focusses on usability (javascript dapps) which can trigger mass addoption.

But since bitcoin is having serious scaling problems already, and ethereum will too, how is Lisk going to address this?

Hello LitcoinCollector,

Thank you for asking this question. It's a very important one. After all, scaling is a huge issue for all blockchain related applications and the more functionalities a crypto-currency/platform/dapp has, the bigger the problem becomes.

If we are talking about decentralized applications and custom blockchains, then Lisk scales very well in comparison to Ethereum. Every decentralized application at Lisk is running on a new sidechain (i.e. a custom blockchain). That means a sidechain which is hundreds of MB big, is only a few kilo bytes on the Lisk blockchain.

I imagine that we will see an "internet of blockchains" at Lisk, which will emerge into a whole autonomous ecosystem. Thousands of decentralized applications and custom blockchains can work in parallel on the Lisk network, because they are all independent from each other. On the Lisk blockchain these thousands of dapps and custom blockchains are only a few MB big, but all data together on the sidechains can go into the terabytes. Adding some sort of marketplace for securing/forging sidechains will create a whole new earning potential and will make Lisk fly more than ever (in my opinion).

You see, scaling of Lisk sidechains is no problem at all. This results from the Lisk architecture, using sidechains instead of one big blockchain and miners.

To give a number or a specific statement regarding transaction scaling on the Lisk blockchain will need more testing. We are enhancing the current testbed greatly. Having a good test coverage is critical for a successful crypto-currency and platform. We mentioned these kind of "optimisations" and "enhancements" in our roadmap. Once we have specific numbers we will obvioiusly share them with the community. Smiley

Just read the whitepaper. Am a little disappointed, to be honest. It's basically a copy of the Crypti paper, and it's very light on details. If you're going to have an ICO, I want something more in-depth and technical than that. I recognize that I can read your code, as it's on Github, but that's not usually my preferred method for coming to an understanding of a complex system. My time is short these days, and digesting code tends to take much longer than understanding a higher-level description.

I bought into the Ethereum presale because every detail had been clearly exposed in its white and yellow papers. With Lisk, there are too many undisclosed details at present for me to feel very comfortable about its future right now. Maybe if I read the code and compare it to Crypti's... but that's a time-consuming proposition.

This is a great post which could benefit Lisk moving forward. Here we have common concerns about the technical details of Lisk and the technology.

Could you go into more detail on what kind of technical and in-depth details Lisk is lacking? (This is a genuine question, not sarcastic nor criticizing you or defending Lisk.)

As part of the community, I believe the approach from ryepdx should be taken seriously, and any other future technical questions should be addressed and added to the documentation.

I strongly agree. It would be great if you can contact us ryepdx so we may can work on this together. I will write you a PM as well.

I have updated my profile, how much reward is for each participant? 200,000 is total amount or every participant will get this amount to wear signature?

200,000 LISK will be distributed between all participants.

hope you will not "moderate" my post.

Any news on who is going to be handling the escrow? Any plans to release the terms of escrow ahead of the ICO?

Don't jump into this half-cocked.

We will publish more information about our escrow partner this week. We will 100% release the escrow terms before the ICO starts.

Interesting!

Is LISK's headquarter in Aachen?

I'm sitting in Aachen, Olivier in the UK. If you want to meet up, just write me in private. Smiley

Where we will sit later with Lisk depends on how much we can collect in the ICO.

3. Week:

4. Week:
XCR: 1300 satoshis
BTC & every ShapeShift coin: 0% bonus (1 BTC count as 1 BTC)

The ICO information is not clear enough.

Can everyone just buy 1 share of a fixed size? Or 1 share which size depends on the amount of sold shares?

Or can you invest as much as you like? If so: is it fixed how much share you get for your money beforehand or does this depend on the total amount raised by the ico?

Thanks

You can participate with as much BTC/XCR/ETH.. as you want. At the end we calculate the total amount which came together and split the LISK though all participants, dependent on the amount they exchanged. Someone who exchanged 2 BTC will get twice as much than someone who exchanged 1 BTC only.

can someone please ELI5 "Turing-Completeness"

thanks

Turing Completeness = It's possible to write any dapp you want. Theoretically there are no limits.

do XCR contributors also get the bonuses during the ICO?

No. XCR contributors will get a fixed (but very good) exchange rate of 1300 satoshi per XCR.

Do you have any specific use cases you want to target with LISK?

Yes! We specifically target custom blockchains for any use-case, dapps for the Internet of Things and decentralized games. These are huge areas worth billions. However, we will also take a look at the market and see what people are developing. If there are further use-cases for which Lisk is suitable (and there are unlimited of those!), we will adapt.

So for the people who want to convert their XCR into LISK it would make most sense to do so in the last week of the ICO, right?
Because this would give them exchange rate of 1300 satoshis per XCR which would not be available in the first 3 weeks because of bonus offerred at that time?

During the whole time you get the same offer for your XCR. It doesn't really matter when you exchange. Because of our 4 weeks return policy (XCR only!) you can participate at a any time.

Just read the whitepaper. Am a little disappointed, to be honest. It's basically a copy of the Crypti paper, and it's very light on details. We know of that problem. We planned to re-do the white paper this week. This evening I will post the new weekly plan to Trello, so there you will get more information. I think by Saturday we will have the white paper enhanced greatly. We will also write down our vision, like a decentralized "marketplace" for node owners. At which they can add themselves as forgers for sidechains and earn a living by securing blockchains. I mentioned this in an interview earlier.

Today I'm on a management training program! Therefore I will only be available in 10 hours again. Olivier is online and can answer questions from time to time. The week plan will come online this evening!

How much LISK can one receive when helping to spread awareness of LISK by dedicating a page on their Computer/Technology Website?
For example the business has been in existence for over 3 years now in the South Florida area. Miami, Fort Lauderdale & West Palm Beach.

What do you mean with "spread aweareness"? A news article, advertisment banners, mention it in a sentence? Smiley

Is it a website with many crypto-currency users?

What I mean by spreading awareness are a few things.

1: Do you care to have businesses tell their clients in that are very familiar with technology about LISK?

2: Would you and your team give dedicated LISK to a business that is 3 years old for setting up a LISK PR page on their website?

3: The business I am referencing is a LLC based in Florida that provides IT support to business and residential clients.  These clients range from Lawyers , Medical Doctors, Realtors, CPAs , Pharmacist, etc... in the South Florida area.

4: Advertisement banners are a viable option, Dedicating a whole page on the website is an option since I am the owner of the LLC.  Advising my clients to take a look at a potential new investment is also an option.

5: No this website does not specialize in cryptocurrency just like Microsoft , Apple, Google, Amazon, Dell, Yahoo, Comcast, Netflix, doesn't specialize in Cryptocurrency and their users but are willing to invest in new opportunities as they present themselves.
I hope this helps clarify my point.

I will contact you in private. Thanks.

I really liked LISK and ready to invest some btc in the ICO untill i get so annoyed by MalReynolds , This dude make Lisk look like a joke by spamming all Bitcointalk Threads with hes Red Big Letters, so annoying and
really works counter effective if you ask me !

Good luck devs but im out !

Please note, that MalReynolds is not a team member and we didn't ask him to do this. He may just be a little over enthusiastic. Smiley

I hope you think about your decision once again. You shouldn't make a decision because of a single community member. You should make a decision because of the team and their technology.

Thank you for the summary Mal. All is looking correct. Smiley

Will shapeshift offer a reasonable exchange?

Probably not the best exchange possible but as an example:

On ShapeShift: 530.08863254 DASH -> 5.02515542 BTC. That means 0,009479839996 satoshi per dash.
On Poloniex: Last price: 0.00955763, 24hr High: 0.00998997, 24hr Low: 0.00897373. So the fluctuations are so big that in the end it doesn't really matter and ShapeShift is a great deal.

Forging rewards mean inflation in Lisk will be 15% in year one (going from 100M to 115M Lisk), while Crypti is a zero inflation coin that will be at 100M coins forever.

Nice summary. Very helpful for someone such as me.

Can you also tell us if the forging rewards will continue to be 15% or is it going to decrease with time?

First year: 5 LISK per block
Second year: 4 LISK per block
Third year: 3 LISK per block
Fourth year: 2 LISK per block
Fifth year: 1 LISK per block

Here is the distribution and inflation after the years. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/102y7i8_79Zfuzgo4oy99EDZwbQc8lR8W-LAC0vj8RlE/edit#gid=0

I hope everyone is having a good weekend so far!

I have a question the fellow members of the LISK community.

Will there be a bonus for holders of Ethereum to exchanges for the ICO ten days from now?

ICO participants who will exchange Ethereum will receive the same bonus as Bitcoin participants. Take a look here: https://blog.lisk.io/lisk-ico-terms-part-i-2e7d01955e4d

Later today we will release more ICO information.

We found out about Ricarda Lisk after we thought of the name - Lisk. Wink

Anyway, I believe in the OP it said that Lisk means
"Chain of Dapps" in Chinese

In Chinese there is no translation for Lisk and it's very advisable to have a Chinese name for a crypto-currency. Therefore our Chinese community came up with a new Chinese name, because there is nothing what sounds similar to "Lisk" and has a meaning. This is how the Chinese name for Lisk 应用链 was born, it has the meaning "Chain of Dapps" or "Dappchain". Smiley

Bter withdrawals should work. Poloniex is being DDOS'ed right now, as far as I know.

This is probably the case. I'm just cautious here. Smiley

Quick ICO question for the devs here. For those with XCR on Polo or Bter, will you be in contact with those exchanges to make sure their wallets are updated and transfers work properly? I know some folks have had issues with coins lost in transit from bter, for instance.

I find myself with some extra XCR in bter right now... not a ton, but extra dumped to my buys that I didn't expect ... unsure if I should sell while their flaky exchange is still working, or just hold them for the swap. I'd feel better if I knew coins could be moved from there instead of just 'vanishing'.

Hey, valid question. Thank you. Smiley

1.) The ICO is still 10 days away and will go on for 4 weeks. That means you will have 40 days to withdraw the funds from the exchanges and send them to the ICO address.

2.) We advise everyone to immediately withdraw the XCR funds from the exchanges. We can't promise that they will work in the last weeks of the ICO.

3.) Next week we will contact the exchanges and talk with them, in order to re-activate the XCR withdrawals. Unfortunately, Cryptsy is dead forever. About Bter and Poloniex I'm optimistic that we can get them working again at least for a few days before the ICO ends.

BUT! I don't promise anything, I don't want to be responsible if the withdrawal isn't working. So please keep an eye on it and check the withdrawal from time to time. You can assume that we try our best to fix the XCR withdrawals at the exchanges. Smiley

Bter withdrawals should work. Poloniex is being DDOS'ed right now, as far as I know.
