I don't really understand why you are short-term worried of the share of one pool. I heard that in 24 hours, it had shrunk from 51% to 34%, which means that the community was able to redirect 1/3 of the hashing previously sent to Ghash to other pools. IN 24 HOURS! In decentralized way! Wow.

It remains somewhat of a concern that a malicious entity can own 76% of the hashing power, but a pool where people voluntarily send 51% is not a realistic threat to the Bitcoin ecosystem. Calm down. The problem was solved already, proving that it was not much of a problem.

It's not like that... When certain people hear they can harm Bitcoin this way, then we have to start worrying. It's not that simple. CEX.IO, actually, BitFury moved their ASICs from GHash to Discus Fish for a temporary solution. But that doesn't resolve the double-spending vulnerability which IS a SERIOUS threat to the Bitcoin infrastructure and the general Bitcoin idea.

Mining pools were never intended to exist when Bitcoin was first introduced. I don't know if you know a lot about the tech side of Bitcoin so I don't want to bore you to death further. But decentralization is key and no pool should ever have more than 30% of the network hashing power to keep it decentralized.

"Bidder registration opens on June 16 and closes June 23, according to a notice posted on the U.S. Marshals website. Only registered bidders can participate in
the auction, which will take place over a 12-hour period on June 27."

"The auction takes place in the coming weeks and will allow participants (who must register and place a $200,000 deposit) to bid on nine blocks of 3,000 bitcoins
and one block of ~2,656 bitcoins."

^^ That should be redone with Casascius coins Grin

I've been all in since March, then sold at 660 and bought at 620. Now I'm all in again, until 1k or something. Hoping to snag a few more at 1k.

Hashtags in the title Grin
Let's just hope we rebound well, and don't get stuck on 660 again.

The auction should go well, and I believe the coins will be sold for a high price. After all, it's a piece of Bitcoin history. Since the early beginnings.

Site is still offline for me.

Im a customer, openup.

Ghash.io front end here is back. Seems they are moving some hashpower out of ghash.io

CEX is still offline for me.
Are they doing a gox'?

They pi**ed some...
The 51% story isn't  very well managed from Cex.io...

They promised a statement, and we've been waiting for it for 3+ days.

There are millions of better ways the government can speculate or invest into BTC.
And they have no reason to do so.  Just as they have no reason to speculate or invest in Apple stock or rare stamps.

It's easier to print money Tongue
I still don't get it how they can be one of the most powerful countries with such government.
Really makes no sense to me. Maybe it's because I haven't seen how they actuay function, but you can't be in such debt and doing nothing to actually get out of it.

1337  Economy / Speculation / Re: rpietila Wall Observer - the Quality TA Thread ;) on: June 15, 2014, 10:27:18 AM
rpietila, what do you think will now happen when Wall Street started trading Bitcoin. Do you think it's good or bad?

Good initially. Bad over the long run. Good initially because they'll pump the price getting in. After that, they have a million tricks to play.

They certainly have a million tricks - manipulating news, huge liquidity to move the price, etc. But, there is the rest of the world involved
here, and no derivatives, naked short selling, etc. which they no longer have at there disposal - I get the feeling once BTC gets going, there bag of
tricks will be much smaller.

But, ass long as they have "the" or "a" reserve currency at their disposal, they can certainly make things extremely
ugly. Buying and selling huge amounts to make BTC very volatile (like we have not yet seen) is a worry. They might be able to effectively neuter it.
Could you imagine them buying the complete order book up, then dumping everything? When you can print money, why not? When you can hide
behind countries, people, etc. why not?
But I think rather than that they will try to utilize it...

IAS

That's exactly what I'm afraid of. They could crush Bitcoin if they wanted to. Let's just hope Bitcoin goes mainstream before that happens.
1338  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: June 15, 2014, 09:06:42 AM
Double bottom confirmed, huge enormous and juicy glorious pumps incoming, be prepared

What's exactly a double bottom? I've seen people having different explanations for it.
1339  Economy / Economics / Re: Worst bitcoin decision you've ever made? on: June 15, 2014, 09:01:14 AM
My worst decision was to buy on the top in January 2014.

Ouch!

Well, keep your head up, we'll be back there soon Wink
1340  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: *** GHash.IO mining pool official page *** on: June 15, 2014, 08:59:11 AM
Just a sec, has any other pool raised in hashrate quantity since GHash went down in percentage?
I mean, did miners go away or are they turning off their own units?

I noticed when MY miners changed pool automatically when GHash could not either sent or receive
they turned to BTC guild and I saw that Guild went about one petahash more at that time from 12.4 to 13.5 at least.

Are you back on Ghash.io now though? They had some server issues as far as I know.
