The fact that PMs from Newbies come with warnings, and you have to be at least full member before you can have an avatar mitigate the problem of impersonation to some extent. We had a lot more impersonation scams before that newbie message was implemented.
That is true, but I've seen a couple of impersonation attempts where the impostor is bold enough to post in the original seller's thread trying to lure a user into sending them funds, so the Newbie warning message isn't shown. I think Operatr's idea of having a confirmed/verified account sounds like a good idea (much better than the idea I proposed earlier in this thread).

hello,
Do you have any more slots available? thanks
Bitcoin Address: 15821Hvhg9DJhMd5MCAoYjLfoDSk59ExXM Current Post Count: 175 Current Rank: Full Member Wearing Rollin Avatar: No
I'm very interested in joining rollin.io's signature campaign but I understand if it's full at the moment. I'm a native English speaker from Canada and if you have a look through my post history you can see I don't post just for the sake of posting. I would like the opportunity to join your team.
Unfortunately the campaign is currently full. Please apply again when you see open slots.

I understand and I'm trying to appeal to common sense from everyone on this board. This affects all of us and the crypto we're trying to promote. My argument is not legal vs illegal, I'm talking about how we are being perceived when we allow these kind of statements (terror support). No matter how you slice it, someone who displays that symbol is a supporter and whoever allows that display is a sympathizer. No way around it. All I'm asking is that we consider what we allow ourselves to be associated with. That's all.
I agree with the fact that it probably isn't beneficial when trying to appeal to newcomers to the site. However, Bitcointalk (seems to) really push for freedom of speech, and I suppose this avatar would fall under that.
|
|
|
I suspect if CBC is allowing anyone worldwide to see the ISIS flag, Bitcointalk won't get in any trouble for doing the same. Do you really want this board to be known as terrorist sympathizers? I never mentioned that at all in my post. I was discussing coins101's idea that since the ISIS flag is illegal in a few countries, then it should be blocked when accessing Bitcointalk from these few countries as well. I was trying to explain to him that that's not how things work on the internet.

... The site is being hosted in the US, so I'm assuming they're abiding by American laws.
...
America doesn't give a shit about country borders. If this ISIS avatar is illegal in several countries around the world, then either block those countries IP addresses from accessing this site so this guy can keep his avatar, or ban his avatar. It seems you completed ignored my post except for the first line, so I'll pose my question to you once again: The site is being hosted in the US, so I'm assuming they're abiding by American laws. I have a question for you though; is CBC.ca blocked in the Netherlands? They're often running stories with images or videos that include the ISIS flag. According to your logic, CBC.ca, or at least the CBC.ca stories on ISIS should be blocked when they're trying to be accessed on a Netherlands IP. Hint: Neither CBC.ca, or the ISIS articles on CBC are blocked on Netherlands IPs. I see no problems with this forum allowing images of ISIS flags, because I suspect if CBC is allowing anyone worldwide to see the ISIS flag, Bitcointalk won't get in any trouble for doing the same. I don't agree with having an ISIS flag as an avatar, but there's a great ignore feature on this forum so that you don't need to see that avatar, or any posts from that user anymore.

It is illegal to display the flag in a few countries. Fact.
Don't ask me for an opinion. I want to know the official view on allowing this illegal content in the countries where it is illegal to display the ISIS flag.
I accept that where it is not illegal to display the flag I just have to take the butt hurt, if the mods have taken the view to allow it on the basis of free speech.
In addition, would you allow it if it was illegal to display the flag in America?
The site is being hosted in the US, so I'm assuming they're abiding by American laws. I have a question for you though; is CBC.ca blocked in the Netherlands? Type of Collateral:PSN/3 Account (Worth the loan amount)
they're not valid collaterals because they can be retrieved easily even without email. Yes they can, just when u get the account, simply go to settings and change the email to yours and That's IT! That's not true. If the original owner contacts Sony and tells them their account was hacked, Sony will reset the account email/password for them, so a PSN account isn't valid collateral.

Although your bot would have a ton of options like you listed a few posts ago, there are a couple big problems that I would see using a bot like this: - A user may make a post that meets the requirements of a post to be counted, but the post might be completely off-topic - there would be no way to police this
- The user makes a copy/paste post with content from an external website - this is a bannable offence on Bitcointalk, and I suspect it would be tough to implement a feature that checks for this
if somebody posts such things on the forum, it will be reported and a mod will remove the post and if it continues the user will get banned. other than that even if a human is checking the posts not a bot, he has to go through the topic and after reading it decide if the post is relevant, duplicate, useful,... which nobody will ever do that since it requires massive amount of free time spent on just going through each user's posts.Wrong, I manage the Rollin.io signature campaign and manually review each post made by each user. When a human is checking out posts it isn't tough to find a copy/paste post, or a completely off-topic post. For most of them I just need to take a peek at the thread's title, and if the post doesn't relate to it at all I can double check the context of it, and confirm that it's off topic. It doesn't take a huge amount of time to check posts either, probably 20 minutes a day or so.

Epochtalk will allow only a restricted set of characters in usernames (the same set as hostnames, IIRC). Alongside every post will be the person's username as well as their far-less-restrictive display name. This should help in a lot of cases.
Trying to detect similar names in general seems pretty difficult. I'm not sure how it'd be done.
It would be difficult to detect different names, but an idea that came to mind would be generating a small image, or a certain color from the hash of someone's username. That way, each color or image should be (at least slightly) different, even when a username is extremely similar. The one problem I could foresee with that approach would be having an ugly color, or small image beside every user's name on all posts and PM's.

Seems like a non issue to me We used to call it imping, but it's not fooling anyone on a forum like this that displays rank and activity
It happens more often than you'd expect.. Especially when the legit user doesn't have an avatar. I've seen a few people get fooled and scammed by these impostors in the few years I've been on the site.

can I take a slot? I think my post quality is good enough but I can work to increase it if required.
Sure, I'd be willing to accept you. Change your signature, and make a post with your details and I'll slot you in.

Bump, two slots have opened up. I would like to apply for a spot please (if there are any available). I've posted almost exclusively in the off-topic section during the month of February, I'd taken a month off and decided to stay away from Bitcoin for a while. If you check my history you'll find that I very rarely post in off topic Bitcoin Address: 1Na267NqjamXAxyYE4g5wMKqLwmmtaMoi2 Current Post Count: 2069 Current Rank: Hero Wearing Rollin Avatar: Yes Let me know if I'm in, thanks. Accepted, you'll be slotted in shortly. However, remember that we don't count posts in the Off-Topic or Investor-based Games sections. I noticed that quite a few of your recent posts have been in those sections. may i join at this campaign ?
please let me know if still available
you can see all my post at my profile,..thanks
I'd have to deny you due to low quality posts.

I think dev should reply here and let us know what all this is going on. I think there is some misunderstanding between dev and original owner of site.
devthedev has replied here already... devthedev still owns the source code of the website, but unchi purchased the passphrase.io domain after it expired. devthedev originally owned the domain, but let it expire and didn't bother renewing it.

I've had to boot a few users out of the campaign today due to copy and pasting posts.
The thread says 'full' but I see you've crossed out a few names from the spreadsheet, does that mean you've currently got open slots? Well, I send messages out to the users that will be removed letting them know why they're being removed. I give them some time to read the message, and tell them to contact me if they feel they were removed accidentally. So the crossed out state is a sort of "limbo" state. If the users have a reasonable explanation to counter their removal, then I'm sometimes willing to give them second chances in the campaign. A slot is open when there's a white slot in the spreadsheet, but a crossed out slot usually means there will be an opening in the next 24 hours or so. can i enroll as there are some users crossed out in the spreadsheet?

My posting has not been massive the last week or so as I was taking a bit of a break but I'm back in the game now, let me know if I am accepted. Thanks
Accepted, but keep in mind that we don't count posts in the "Investor-based Games" section - I see that quite a few of your recent posts are in that section.
