1022  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [ESHOP launched] Trezor: Bitcoin hardware wallet on: March 24, 2015, 11:12:54 PM
119$ is seriously too much for me Cheesy
My whole wallet has around 2BTC, if I withdraw all my investments it would be around 10
Paying half a bitcoin to guard only 2 is a bit too much Cheesy

Maybe in the future, I'd like to start with something cheaper Smiley
For that amount of bitcoin I don't think a Trezor would be worth it. You might want to just keep the majority of your funds on a BIP38 paper wallet, and then keep a small portion in a hotwallet (something like Electrum would be perfect for that) for small spending whenever you feel the need. If you reach 5 BTC or so, I think a Trezor would be more justifiable.
1023  Other / Off-topic / Re: RPI and Cron Jobs ? on: March 23, 2015, 01:02:16 AM
how good are RPI's With Cron jobs ? (once every 5th minute)
My Pi is great with cronjobs. I run a few of them: one to check to make sure all machines on my local network are awake and pingable (coded in Python), another to generate a random number (coded in Python again), and finally, one to generate a random image (just a bash script). It's worth mentioning that I'm using a single model B for all these tasks, that is also running an Apache webserver.

I run the network ping test every two minutes and output the results to a text file. It works great, and is consistently updated every two minutes. I run the random number script once a day, and then the random image script once every 6 hours. Obviously none of these tasks are very resource demanding, and the Pi seems to handle it fine. If you're looking to run simple scripts like these every five minutes it should work out no problem.

What kind of script(s) are you looking at having the Pi run for you?

i'll need the RPI to run a Cron Job every 5 minute, to trigger a Gambling script on my web hosting server. at the moment i can only trigger the script once every 1 hour due to limitation with the hosting, so i thought a RPI might do the trick
If this script isn't too complicated I think it should work fine. If you want, you could send me the script and I could test it out for you, and make sure that it can run every five minutes on my Pi.

1025  Other / Meta / Re: Just remove signatures already. As in delete, disable, gone. on: March 22, 2015, 03:51:09 PM
If signatures cause so many problems why not just ban paid signatures? That allows personal sigs to remain and eliminates all the spammers?

I am thinking the same, if the staff want to resolve the problem of the insubstantial posts, once and for all (? subjective) they should ban all the signature campaign, and the possibility for rent the signature space. If they want they can try to 'enforce' some rules to all the sig. campaigns.

Just my personal opinion as your and the others.
One thing they could do instead of this would be to ban linking to websites other than Bitcointalk in your signature. That way, there would be no advertising of other websites. The worst that could happen would be advertising for a thread on the website. If they wanted to combat advertising threads on Bitcointalk, they could remove links from signatures completely.

Websites like overclock.net have rules like these - no images or links to other sites and their signatures aren't very intrusive at all. Nothing like some of the signature campaigns here, some of the signatures here really stick out like a sore thumb in a thread. If you guys want to see how overclock.net signatures differ from here, check out any thread there and you'll see that most of them just contain text with computer specs, links to other threads, opinions, etc. None of them contain any advertising, and to my memory I don't remember seeing an intrusive signature, and I've been on the site for a few years.

So is it okay if I join? I spend most my time in the gambling section and think this campaign would really suit me.
Sure, if you're interested in joining you're welcome to join. I've reviewed your posts and they look good, so when you're ready, change your signature and post here with your post count, and bitcoin address.

Im interested in joining im not sure I qualify or not. So would the banner be incorporated with the referral link and if so how would you apply it?
You wouldn't have to add your referral link to your signature, that's only optional. Although, there are no downsides to doing so - you make 30% of the house edge on all referred user's bets. To apply it, just change the URL's in the signature from "rollin.io" to "rollin.io/ref/REF_URL" and then the links will lead to your referral Rollin link rather than just to the normal link.

1029  Other / New forum software / Re: Question about accounts with invalid email addresses on: March 21, 2015, 03:15:47 PM
They don't have access to passwords, but what about the password hashes? Why not just transfer the hashes to the new system?
It could be that the new forum has a new method of hashing passwords (different algorithm maybe), so if the old hashes were transferred over, your old password wouldn't work because of the new algorithm.

Sorry, there isn't. There are only full member and hero slots open.
1031  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Which Offline Wallet on: March 20, 2015, 01:31:59 PM
i find it better for newbiew, the classic bitcoin core, i know it's a paint to download the whole blockchain, but it's more intuitive and secure than multibit, others client seeems too complicated
Electrum is a great wallet for newbies too, it's fairly easy to navigate around in, plus the one massive advantage is that one doesn't need to download the entire blockchain to use it. To me, Electrum seems much easier to use than Bitcoin Core. I run a node with Core, and once and awhile I take a look at the interface, and it seems like it can be really confusing for newbies. Addresses don't show up on any of the main pages, unless you create a payment request. To see addresses, one must go to File > Addresses (labelled something like that) to see their receiving addresses.
1032  Other / New forum software / Re: Screenshots from epochtalk on: March 20, 2015, 01:12:45 PM
Maybe something good to have is forum layout options for user to select what colour and theme they want to have that way everyone is happy then. And having a much more colour related to crypto and maybe icons and different style altogether. New forums new style new design new feel for a fresh start Smiley
I would really like this suggestion to be implemented as well. The white and orange isn't doing it for me, the colors just don't seem to fit together well. It does look like the software will bring a few improvements, such as the auto-preview when preparing a new post. I use the preview function all the time when making posts to make sure the formatting is correct, and if the new software will display it automatically that would be awesome. I think I have to agree with FattyMcButterpants though, I don't think that this new software looks like it's worth $1.5 million.
1033  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Which Offline Wallet on: March 20, 2015, 01:04:58 PM
i wolud not choose Bitcoin Core, Armory as a beginner. the rest is more user-friendly. just try and only use pocket money.
I think Bitcoin-Qt would be one of the worst option for offline wallets when there are alternatives like Electrum and Armory. Either of those alternatives seem to be much more user friendly compared to Bitcoin-Qt. Plus the seed-based wallet idea in Electrum is a great concept too, because if your hard drive ever failed without a backup, you should at least have your seed backed up somewhere.

1035  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Woke up today and lost all my Bitcoins ! on: March 19, 2015, 03:04:56 AM
I`m sorry guys for your lose but its very important to keep a good security.

If you plan to hold larger sums of bitcoins, dont use an online wallet, you might never know what scammers lie around there.

So the best method to use is, an offline cold storage with encrypted hard disk, you can never stay safer than that  Wink
Pretty much this. If you have large amounts to store (as in 5 or more BTC) then I'd look into a hardware wallet to save them on, like a Trezor. I haven't heard of a user's coins being stolen on a Trezor before.

I'm not super sure about Trezor yet. The website you need to use it appears to be something of a weak link, not necessarily for security but usability.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/2rz30w/trezor_why_its_absolutely_not_ready_for_mass/
A Trezor can be used with Electrum as well, so users aren't tied down to MyTrezor anymore. IIRC the latest Electrum update for all OSes includes Trezor functionality.

I wasnt talking about hardware wallets.

I was talking about cold storage on offline PC with encrypted hard-disk.No virus, malware, spyware, keylogger or other BS can access the bitcoin because its not connected to the internet ,and you will use a clean USB stick to transfer the already signed transaction file to the broadcasting PC, so that no virus can access it.

Even if the scam-enforcement breaks into your house without warrant and seizes your PC, they still can't access your bitcoins only if they know the encryption key, which you should hide under a marked tree in your nearest forest.

That should be the best protection i know of...  Smiley
Well, to be fair, I think a hardware wallet would be cheaper than purchasing a used, older, dedicated machine to just signing transactions offline. But then there's the argument that an offline machine can be re-purposed too so I'll leave that there.

As for the password bit, a more secure method would be to use KeePass with a strong master password, and then generate a very long, random password with KeePass to encrypt your wallet with. Just be sure not to lose either your KeePass database, or your master password.

Free bump, I pmed you.

You're still active at OCN? I lurked around there for a bit but never really posted. Debated joining their BOINC/FOLD@HOME team, but my client was already setup with Cure coin.. LMK!
PM received, and replied to.

And yes, I'm still on OCN. I don't post as much as I used to (Distributed Computing has slowed down a bunch in the last half year or so) but I'm still on the forum multiple times daily, mostly watching the Distributed Computing section and making sure everything is looking good on the forums.  Smiley

I haven't heard of a user's coins being stolen on a Trezor before.

i am new to following bitcoin is something like this part of the drop in price today. Or is todays drop normal?

there is nothing "normal' in terms of bitcoin volitity. usd and other currencies shift at most 1-2? in the short term bitcoin can do big jumps.

go to sites like coindesk and look at the price charts  eg in 2 days in january it went from $267 to $177 and a day later back to $210.

 Grin

Today's drop was more than normal, compared to daily prices changes in the past few months. Yesterday IIRC the peak was about $295 USD, and now a coin is selling for about $255 USD, which translates to a 15% drop in less than 24 hours.

Let me know if I am enrolled and can you also tell me when will be my first payment?
Thx
Accepted, spreadsheet has been updated. Your first payment will be at midnight on April 18th, GMT time.

Done. Thanks for accepting me.
You're welcome, spreadsheet has been updated.

Also, I'll take a look at the signature issue, thanks for bringing it to my attention. If just removing the https:// part fixes the problem that would be great, because it sounds like that doesn't make a difference to the signature at all. If that doesn't work, then I'll let Kiran from Rollin know, and figure something out.

EDIT: It looks like removing the https:// portion of the URL works just fine as you mentioned. I'll be updating signatures in the OP shortly to remove the https:// portion of the Rollin URL.
